[0]
president biden is extending the pause
[2]
on student loan repayments through may
[4]
1st the so-called administrative
[6]
forbearance was set to expire on january
[8]
31st the program started back in march
[11]
2020 as part of the cares act passed
[14]
under former president trump the pause
[16]
on payments affects as many as 41
[18]
million federal student loan holders
[20]
despite the extension the president is
[23]
still feeling pressured to do more about
[25]
the immense amount of student debt in
[27]
the u.s for more we're joined by cbs
[29]
news chief washington correspondent
[31]
major garrett major great to see you the
[34]
white house has let many of its pandemic
[36]
relief programs run out such as the
[39]
eviction moratorium and increased
[40]
unemployment benefits so why did the
[42]
biden administration decide to extend
[45]
the pause of student loan repayments
[47]
it's a really good question and the
[49]
white house said today through
[50]
spokeswoman jen saki that because of the
[52]
omicron variant and other complicating
[54]
factors those are her words precisely
[57]
the administration decided to take this
[58]
step and it's worth remembering that
[60]
even a couple of weeks ago
[62]
this white house publicly was very
[64]
lukewarm about another extension for
[67]
student loan payment pausing and it was
[70]
kind of felt here at the white house it
[71]
would not be extended but with omar
[73]
cronin and other factors plus it's worth
[75]
pointing out intense public pressure
[78]
from progressive democrats to do
[80]
something about this issue the white
[81]
house moved and put together this
[83]
three-month extension and certainly
[85]
those progressives who called for it
[87]
applauded that but said they want the
[88]
administration to take much more
[90]
aggressive actions in the future
[92]
well that being said major president
[94]
biden campaigned on wiping out a portion
[96]
of the debt held by federal student loan
[99]
borrowers he has yet to follow through
[101]
on that so despite a lot of pressure and
[103]
criticism from members of his own party
[106]
is pressure mounting on the president to
[108]
do something about student loan debt
[111]
yes and this is a long simmering issue
[113]
and as you said during the campaign
[115]
then candidate biden said he wanted to
[117]
do something about the intense burden of
[120]
student loan debt he wasn't that
[121]
specific since he's become president he
[123]
said he's willing to go up to ten
[124]
thousand dollars in loan forgiveness but
[127]
there are plenty of democrats in the
[128]
house and senate who want him to be much
[130]
more aggressive 50 000
[132]
in student loan forgiveness the white
[133]
house is not prepared to go that far and
[136]
the president has also said he wants
[138]
congress to do this not use executive
[140]
authority there are some in congress on
[142]
the democratic side who believe the
[143]
president has
[145]
with the power of an executive order
[146]
exactly that authority to
[149]
remove upwards of fifty thousand dollars
[152]
in student loan debt the white house
[153]
disagrees this issue will continue but
[155]
for time with this pause until may 1st
[159]
the administration hopes it's bought
[160]
some time to have deeper discussions
[162]
about the future student loan repayment
[165]
and student loan debt
[166]
major i want to circle back on something
[168]
you briefly touched on during his
[170]
tuesday address on the omicron variant
[172]
president biden continued to urge people
[174]
to get vaccinated but he did not
[176]
implement any additional measures such
[178]
as travel restrictions or urging public
[181]
events to be canceled are measures like
[183]
that something the white house might
[184]
consider if we continue to see a surge
[186]
in cases
[188]
consider yes implement probably not and
[190]
at the briefing today jensachi was asked
[192]
about a neighboring school district here
[194]
in the nation's capital prince george's
[196]
county which has
[198]
basically gone to online learning for
[199]
the first full month of next year 2022.
[202]
jan saki said the administration doesn't
[204]
support that things that might be an
[205]
overreaction certainly deferred to local
[207]
jurisdictions to make its own decisions
[210]
but it believes that because of the
[212]
availability of vaccines and boosters
[214]
and other measures
[215]
such as social distancing and masking
[218]
things can go on more or less as normal
[220]
and is taking a somewhat dim view of
[223]
either things that look like or sound
[225]
like a lockdown or much more intense
[227]
travel restrictions but i can tell you
[228]
here in the district of columbia new
[230]
measures are being taken mask mandates
[232]
have been reestablished for indoor
[234]
dining or any kind of indoor activity
[236]
and very soon in the next couple of
[238]
weeks you'll have to have proof of
[240]
vaccination to get into a gym a
[242]
restaurant a club or anything like that
[243]
so here in the nation's capital at the
[245]
local level new restrictions are being
[248]
put in place
[249]
at that same news conference president
[251]
biden was asked about senator joe
[253]
manchin's no vote on his build back
[255]
better plan and the president says he
[257]
and manchin will quote get something
[260]
done what could senator manchin be
[262]
looking for from the white house and
[264]
what might the president be willing to
[266]
give in order to get this bill passed
[269]
uh that would be the two trillion dollar
[271]
question or set of two trillion dollar
[273]
questions because that's basically the
[274]
rough price tag 1.75 to 2 trillion and
[277]
nobody knows the answers to either of
[278]
those very good and persistent questions
[280]
they were brought up again at today's
[281]
white house briefing the white house is
[283]
basically on its heels a little bit
[285]
there has been no vote on buildback
[287]
better but joe manchin made it very
[289]
clear the democratic senator from west
[290]
virginia he will not support it in its
[292]
current form
[293]
and the white house will not say that it
[295]
has to go entirely back to the drawing
[297]
board that there can be constructive
[298]
conversations and negotiations going
[300]
forward they put basically a two to
[303]
three week timeline on that and
[304]
supported senate majority leader charles
[306]
schumer's announcement that he intends
[308]
to have votes on
[310]
this build back better legislation
[313]
early in january 2022 so if things
[315]
aren't resolved by then there may be
[317]
what you call show votes to see where
[319]
everyone stands and how far or close the
[320]
white house is which may prompt more
[322]
negotiations the bottom line on
[324]
buildback better it is weeks if not
[326]
months away
[328]
major before we let you go with
[330]
christmas just a few days away do we
[332]
know how president biden and the first
[334]
family plan to spend their holidays
[336]
here at the white house uh the white
[338]
house said today the president and the
[339]
first lady will be here at the white
[341]
house this weekend there'll be some
[342]
public events for the president tomorrow
[344]
no commitment on whether there'll be
[345]
anything on christmas eve and then
[347]
according to the general uh impression
[350]
left by jen saki the spokesperson the
[351]
president may take some vacation time
[353]
next week but christmas day christmas
[355]
eve here at the white house
[357]
major garrett thank you
[359]
sure
