I Shouldn't Have Bought Tesla Powerwall! - YouTube

Channel: WHAT'S INSIDE? FAMILY

[2]
so the power went out yesterday
[4]
lightning struck thank you powerwall
[6]
this was such a good decision and for me
[8]
it was a waste of money and i regret it
[16]
the power doesn't work on this one it
[17]
works on all the other ones not that one
[19]
i gotta get that fixed what you're
[21]
seeing right here is actually the
[22]
stormiest that it gets in our little
[24]
town in southern utah
[26]
so much for a good time lapse the camera
[29]
literally almost slid off of the car we
[31]
get rain we get lightning in the
[34]
summertime they're called summer monsoon
[36]
storms they have them here in the
[37]
southwest and it is really fun in fact
[39]
yesterday our power went out for five
[42]
minutes and these power walls turned on
[45]
and ran the house for five minutes all
[47]
by themselves we have had tesla solar
[49]
and tesla power walls for six months now
[52]
and i'm not gonna wait until the year
[54]
review to tell you my thoughts on having
[56]
the power wall before i go into all the
[59]
reasons why i need to first tell you
[60]
that i definitely regret buying the
[63]
tesla power wall and for me it was a
[65]
waste of money and i regret it and i'm
[67]
going to tell you the reasons why from
[68]
my perspective and maybe that'll help
[70]
some of you in your decision to buy
[71]
tesla power walls
[74]
i am not a power wall hater i do like
[76]
the power walls
[77]
but i shouldn't have bought it let me
[79]
explain
[80]
got my tesla surfboard that we cut in
[82]
half for a video a while back
[84]
still have half of it i wonder if it
[86]
still floats
[90]
it still floats tesla surfboard first
[92]
time i've seen the water since the ocean
[96]
yes i am grateful to have the solar up
[99]
here and i am grateful to have the power
[101]
walls and i think it is a great thing to
[103]
have in the future and i see a lot of
[105]
people in the future having battery
[106]
packs to help them when the grid goes
[108]
down but from a straight financial side
[110]
of things there are considerations to
[111]
have when you're deciding whether to
[113]
spend ten thousand dollars on a battery
[115]
pack or ten thousand dollars on more
[116]
solar panels and i'll share all the
[118]
reasons why and what my considerations
[120]
are but first i want to talk about
[121]
today's sponsor of the video which is
[123]

[165]
the background it's a nice insight into
[167]
youtube success from one of the top
[169]
creators or the top tech creator ever on
[172]
youtube go take marquez brownlee's class
[174]
it is really good so for those of you
[175]

[190]
description and explore your creativity
[192]
with skillshare thank you to skillshare
[194]
for sponsoring this video and now we're
[195]
going to go back to looking at the data
[197]
behind
[198]
a power wall is it a good decision or
[200]
not
[201]
i don't think it is but let's find out
[202]
why
[203]
we have solar panels on three places on
[205]
our route we bought tesla solar so
[207]
they're not the tesla solar tiles that
[209]
you see where you actually get the full
[211]
roof roofed but they are solar panels
[213]
that are bought through tesla we were
[215]
lucky enough to get one tesla power wall
[218]
for free thank you to all of you guys
[219]
that used our tesla referral code to buy
[221]
your teslas tesla just gave us one for
[223]
free which is really cool because those
[225]
cost around 8 500
[226]
one of them is not going to do much
[228]
especially for the house that's as large
[229]
as ours is with our entire office built
[231]
onto it so we bought a second power wall
[233]
at full price which was about 8 500 and
[235]
then with installation it's around 10 to
[237]
11 000
[238]
our solar is covering about 35
[241]
of the energy usage for our house which
[244]
is pretty good considering we have one
[246]
two three four electric cars we only
[248]
drive electric we only charge at home
[251]
really unless we're on a road trip and
[252]
then we've got all the air conditioning
[254]
units we have the studio where we work
[256]
inside of there there's a lot of things
[258]
going on in the house so right now it's
[259]
the middle of the afternoon but as you
[261]
can tell it is pouring rain so my solar
[264]
is currently generating uh zero and i'm
[266]
using around 6.5 kilowatts we have our
[269]
pool cleaner going on right now we have
[271]
some lights on in the house but i'm
[273]
going to show you i'm kind of curious by
[275]
this
[276]
how much energy does our house use when
[278]
we're charging all of our cars and
[280]
running our air conditioning units
[282]
one way to test it out let's just plug
[284]
all these things in and test it out all
[285]
right are we ready i am screen recording
[287]
you will see it live i'm gonna put it on
[289]
the screen right now so you can see my
[291]
screen recording of what it looks like
[293]
this is for the roadster let's plug in
[296]
the red one over here
[300]
beeping at me
[303]
we are at 5.3 currently
[307]
and
[310]
oh i hear some fans going
[312]
it turned yellow that should mean that
[314]
the charge is about to happen and there
[316]
we go 13.5 kilowatts right now let's
[320]
plug in the next car tesla model x we
[324]
have plugged that in
[325]
[Music]
[327]
and
[331]
it is humid in here we're gonna let it
[332]
go up okay 16.1
[334]
it's gonna go higher than that 19.1
[338]
tesla model s
[342]
34.7 okay let's go inside where the air
[344]
conditioning is
[345]
oh
[346]
that's so hot
[350]
alexa turn the house on
[353]
what this will do is open up every shade
[355]
and it will also turn on every light in
[357]
the house there we go all the lights are
[359]
on let's see what that bumps it up to
[361]
all right so that's what the lights on
[363]
we got a couple more kilowatts now we
[366]
are going to turn on all of the air
[368]
conditioning units because right now
[369]
they are all turned off i turned them
[371]
off just before this let's set the house
[373]
to a nice
[374]
71 degrees how about that
[377]
that should be all of them now we're at
[380]
38.2 oh there we go 50.
[384]
that's so much energy 51.6
[388]
oh my gosh
[390]
you can see the spike this is where we
[391]
were all day long we were around like
[393]
8.8 and we went up to 17. had a little
[396]
outage for a little bit there not a
[397]
power outage just sometimes the data
[398]
doesn't report properly the highest we
[400]
got was around 25 and now
[403]
we are all the way up to 51.4
[406]
kilowatts for the first few months i
[408]
would have the tesla power wall charge
[411]
up during the day so whenever there's
[412]
excess power coming from the solar
[415]
instead of pushing it back to the grid
[417]
it would push directly into our power
[418]
wall so it would take it from 20 full
[421]
all the way to 100
[423]
and then what was cool is that for the
[424]
first few hours of the evening instead
[426]
of pulling power from the grid we would
[428]
drain the power walls from 100 down to
[431]
20 percent and then redo that every
[433]
single day we didn't use any energy from
[436]
the power supply for like eight hours
[438]
and it was fantastic thank you powerwall
[439]
this was such a good decision then i
[441]
called my local power company and asked
[443]
them how much is the energy company
[446]
paying for the power that i'm pushing
[448]
back to the grid and it turns out
[451]
that any energy that i push back to the
[453]
grid
[454]
they buy it for 100 of the cost so
[457]
basically give me a one for one credit
[459]
for when i use it later in the day
[461]
so the grid
[463]
is my power wall it's really nice to be
[465]
able to have a power company that buys
[467]
back my energy for 100
[469]
but to be fair they did tell me that
[472]
next year they're only going to buy it
[473]
back for 80
[475]
the year after that they're gonna buy it
[476]
back for 60 and the year after that
[478]
they're going to go down to 40 percent
[480]
so at that point
[482]
give me a few years three or four years
[484]
i think my tesla power wall will finally
[486]
be worth its money because i can use it
[489]
to store energy and feed energy back to
[491]
my house because the energy that i'm
[493]
selling back is only 40 so by me cycling
[496]
through my battery power wall every
[497]
single day i'm actually degrading the
[499]
battery and the sooner that it's going
[501]
to basically be dead and unusable and
[503]
you need to go buy another one my
[504]
battery pack is only there
[507]
for an emergency like if something crazy
[509]
happens like the power goes out which
[512]
this is the stormiest weather that
[514]
you're going to see in our little town
[516]
honestly like this is it right now
[519]
this is actually kind of crazy this wind
[522]
but like the power went out yesterday it
[524]
went out for five minutes because
[525]
lightning struck i think i can survive
[527]
for five minutes gosh that storm is
[529]
looking pretty big i'm gonna go in the
[530]
garage
[532]
so yes it is good to have a power wall
[534]
or a backup whenever the power does fail
[536]
and when i say it's not worth the money
[538]
what i mean is that i could have taken
[539]
that twenty thousand dollars but it cost
[541]
to put these on the wall and i could
[543]
have put a bunch more maybe 20 maybe 30
[546]
more solar panels
[548]
on the house every single day that would
[550]
be generating money for me and money for
[552]
our house decreasing the cost now the
[554]
thing that you have to understand is
[555]
that the two power walls that we have
[557]
they are only 13.5 kilowatts of energy
[560]
inside of it so we have two of them so
[562]
that's what 27 and the max output is 5
[565]
kilowatt hours at one time so we can get
[567]
10 kilowatt hours coming out in fact
[569]
i'll show you what that looks like like
[570]
if we wanted to use the power wall right
[573]
now
[574]
i can change it to self-powered
[577]
and watch this
[579]
we're going to take all the energy from
[581]
the power walls right now and push it to
[584]
the house so even with two power walls
[586]
that are fully charged right now with
[589]
all of our cars charging with all of the
[591]
lights and the ac on which is not
[592]
recommended we don't do this all the
[593]
time we can only get 10 kilowatts out
[595]
max out of the two different power walls
[597]
five per power wall this is going to
[599]
drain incredibly fast like maybe in an
[601]
hour or two it's going to be gone and
[603]
you can see we're still pulling 42
[605]
kilowatts from the grid so yes i know a
[608]
lot of you in the comments are like wow
[610]
your house is like a commercial building
[612]
yeah it kind of is luckily unfortunately
[614]
for us the power cost in our city is the
[618]
same day and night there's no like more
[620]
expensive in the day cheaper at night
[622]
time it is six cents per kilowatt so if
[625]
we look at yesterday for example 256
[628]
kilowatt
[630]
hours 256 times .06 so yesterday it cost
[636]
us 15.36
[638]
for all of our energy usage that we had
[640]
yesterday so basically um our solar
[643]
panels saved us four dollars yesterday
[645]
if we had more solar panels instead of
[648]
the power walls we would have made more
[650]
money right here because we're really
[652]
not using our power walls every day so
[654]
that's a decision if you are thinking
[656]
about getting tesla solar at tesla power
[658]
walls you really need to look at what is
[660]
the cost of the energy of electricity
[662]
in the city that you live in how much
[665]
will they buy it back for when you push
[666]
energy back to the grid and then also
[669]
like how often do you have power outages
[671]
if you have them a lot then the benefit
[673]
of that is going to weigh heavier than
[675]
just the cost of how much energy you're
[677]
saving from that side of it for us
[679]
probably not the most useful thing so i
[681]
am thinking about getting more solar and
[684]
i was thinking about getting one or two
[685]
more battery power wall so that we could
[687]
store more energy and use it but after
[689]
watching this for six months and looking
[691]
at the actual raw data i've learned i
[693]
really need more solar i do not need
[695]
more power walls i can survive with my
[697]
two because if the power goes out and we
[699]
just pull off of the power walls all
[701]
that it will do is have the lights run
[703]
for our entire house and then the ac
[705]
unit for our studio because it's just
[707]
one unit it's a contained place and if
[709]
really it really got hot at night time
[710]
we could run it in there so there is a
[713]
video that i did not plan on making but
[715]
uh i wish i didn't buy tesla power walls
[717]
but i kind of wish we didn't buy it it
[719]
was not the best use of money i'm
[721]
willing to admit when i made a mistake
[723]
with money and we did with that one i
[724]
should not have bought the power walls
[726]
now if we end up selling the house which
[728]
we might with in a few years this is our
[730]
dream home but the kids grow up they
[732]
move out
[733]
maybe there will be some benefit to the
[734]
next owner and some value and we'll get
[736]
our money back and selling the house and
[738]
that it's already here but um as of
[740]
right now i wish i had more solar units
[743]
so anyway thank you guys for watching
[745]
let me know your thoughts i hope this
[746]
was helpful to some of you i know a lot
[748]
of you in the comments are going to be
[749]
like you don't know anything about what
[750]
you're talking about
[751]
blah blah blah that's fine let me know
[753]
in the comments i love learning from you
[754]
in the comments even when i'm wrong
[763]
this is a rainstorm and this is about as
[765]
bad as it gets where we live
[767]
i love it i love the lightning i love
[769]
the thunder
[770]
i love the rain
[772]
those storm clouds are pretty ominous
[774]
and they look kind of reddish like they
[776]
have a red hue to them
[778]
compared to that one over there that's
[780]
just dark and rainy
[782]
look at those clouds
[784]
[Music]
[824]
[Music]
[830]
[Music]
[845]
[Music]
[847]
so
[852]
[Music]
[860]
it is so wet out there i love this this
[863]
never happens
[866]
