Hey what's up guys, my name is John聽 and I'm an emergency medicine PA
[3]
And in today's video I want to聽 talk to you about your 401k or 403b
[8]
employer-sponsored retirement plan聽 and explain the 401k matching.
[14]
I will run you guys through my 401k.
[16]
I'll also talk to you guys about why聽 you should consider investing in a 401k
[20]
when you start your new job.
[22]
What is a 401k?
[23]
A 401k or a 403b if you work for a聽 nonprofit like myself is an employer聽聽
[29]
sponsored retirement plan which allows聽 for tax deferred contributions and at the聽聽
[34]
time of this video the maximum amount you could聽 contribute to a 401k or a 403b is $19,500 a year
[41]
with those over the age of 50 being聽 able to contribute a max of $26,000.
[46]
I have three simple reasons why you guys should聽 contribute to your employers 401k or 403b
[52]
The first reason is that the聽 money in a normal 401k is untaxed
[56]
until you pull it at retirement age.
[58]
So you are contributing money tax free.
[61]
Secondly is the money lowers聽 your yearly tax burden.
[64]
If two people who earn the same income聽 contributed maximum amount of $19,500
[70]
but the difference being one of them invested聽 in a 401k and the other one didn't...
[75]
The 401k individual would immediately save聽聽
[78]
four thousand dollars and that is the advantage聽 of having your contributions being tax-deferred...
[84]
You are contributing more money and聽 you're saving money on your taxes.
[88]
The last big reason to invest聽 in your employer sponsored 401k聽聽
[92]
or 403b is because many employers聽 will match your contributions
[96]
and guys that is free money
[98]
talking about to the tunes聽 of thousands of dollars.
[101]
The typical financial advice is to save into聽 your 401k up until you hit your employer's match
[106]
I will run you guys through an example because聽聽
[109]
getting to the match sometimes is very聽 confusing and they don't give you examples
[113]
If you guys have any questions聽 or comments leave them down below
[116]
share what your 401k is
[118]
what the match is
[119]
I would like to see what other people are聽 earning or making with their 401k matching
[123]
My current plan states that my employer will match聽 3.5% of the first 6% percent of salary contributed
[129]
there is a two year vesting period
[131]
and more specifically they聽 say that they will match 100%聽聽
[134]
of the first 1% saved and 50%聽 match on the next 5% saved
[139]
So what does that even mean?
[141]
Say hypothetically you made聽聽
[142]
a hundred thousand dollars just so聽 that we use easy round simple numbers
[146]
They want you to contribute聽 six percent of your salary aka聽聽
[150]
$6,000 a year and they will give you聽 a free $3,500 when you do that so聽聽
[156]
$6,000 of your $100,000 is the amount you need聽 to contribute to maximize your employer's 401k
[164]
after you hit that point you could go聽 invest your money in other assets but聽聽
[167]
this is what you need to do to get the full聽 employer match to maximize that free money
[172]
More specifically they will聽 match dollar for dollar your聽聽
[175]
1% of total salary followed by 50%聽 of the next 5% of your total salary
[181]
so for the first one thousand聽 dollars that you contribute
[184]
your employer will match you聽 a free one thousand dollars
[188]
and then for every one thousand dollars after that
[190]
they will put up five hundred dollars,聽 that is the fifty percent component.
[194]
And even though for this example聽 they will match up to six percent
[197]
You could contribute 10%, 15%.
[199]
You can maximize the 401k.
[202]
All the money that you put in is聽 your money and that money will grow聽聽
[205]
in the stock market or whatever plan聽 that they have set up for you so聽聽
[209]
you don't have to stop at six percent but that's聽 what you need to do to get the full match.
[214]
Another factor in the 401k聽 plan is the vesting period.
[217]
There is a two year vesting聽 period so if you leave the company聽聽
[220]
before two years you will actually聽 lose out on their employer match.
[224]
You will not lose out on your聽 contributions that is your money.
[228]
Some 401k plans do an all-or-none sort of vesting.
[232]
Right at the two-year mark...
[234]
Right at the three-year mark...
[235]
100% of the employers聽 contributions will be your's.
[238]
And others will do a more gradual,聽 gradient sort of contribution
[243]
So say, every year 20% of their聽 contributions will be your's.
[248]
This is sort of a mechanic to聽 make sure that you stick around.
[252]
The best thing for you as an employee is聽 to have a short vesting period because
[256]
Who knows what the future holds?
[257]
And the last thing you want is to think聽 that you're getting all of this free money
[261]
And then they snatch it away from you聽 because you didn't hit the vesting period.
[265]
A reason why you shouldn't聽 invest in a 401k or 403b is
[269]
If you think that you will be taxed聽 at a higher rate in your retirement
[273]
Then it actually will make sense to pay taxes now聽聽
[276]
and withdraw that money tax-free聽 using something like a Roth IRA.
[281]
Another thing is that not all聽 employers 401k or 43b plans...
[285]
They're not with great investment聽 companies or they are poor plans.
[290]
I mean, sometimes these 401k聽 plans have really high fees.
[293]
You want to vet whatever plan聽 your employer is choosing.
[297]
Or if they let you choose something?
[298]
Great!
[299]
Because you could be losing a lot of money聽 based on the employer's plan that they choose.
