How to Spot Black Market Pain Pills - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
Our country is in the grips of a deadly opioid epidemic.
[4]
Our investigative producer Leslie Marcus uncovered
[7]
the deadliest part of this tragedy,
[10]
the black market pill industry.
[13]
In Los Angeles, I'm heading to San Diego
[15]
where the San Ysidro port of entry lives.
[18]
It's the largest port in the nation and the DEA says
[20]
this is where the fentanyl and counterfeit pain pills
[23]
are coming across our borders from Mexico.
[25]
(dramatic music)
[30]
We're at the undisclosed location right now,
[32]
about to meet special agent Amy Roderick.
[34]
Agent Amy asked us not to have our cameras rolling
[36]
while following her to the location,
[38]
so we're going to go dark right now.
[41]
Put in perspective to me this new trend you're seeing
[44]
which is fentanyl and why it's so much more dangerous.
[47]
Fentanyl is so dangerous because it's 30
[49]
to 50 times stronger than heroin.
[52]
A kilogram of fentanyl here in San Diego,
[55]
which is the cheapest in the United States,
[56]
would go anywhere from $31,000 to $35,000.
[60]
Once you take that same kilo and you sell it in somewhere
[62]
like Boston, Massachusetts, the price jacks up
[65]
to double that.
[66]
Tell me how the fentanyl is being dispersed
[68]
throughout this entire country.
[71]
The Mexican cartels are sending the fentanyl up
[72]
through the traditional smuggling routes right
[74]
here in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa.
[76]
They can send it up in vehicles, they can send it across
[79]
with people, they could put it in people's luggage,
[81]
so there's no real limit to the ways they can get
[83]
their drugs across here in San Diego
[85]
and then from there they go everywhere in the United States.
[92]
If you were a cartel down in Mexico and you had
[94]
an industrial pill press, the pill press will create
[96]
thousands of pills per hour.
[98]
You can illegally buy these on the Internet
[100]
to make these look as real as possible, to trick people
[103]
into taking these fraudulent prescription pills
[105]
containing fentanyl.
[106]
Can you explain to me how much harder it is
[109]
to manufacture heroin versus make fentanyl
[113]
and why that's also fueling this crisis.
[115]
If you were a Mexican drug cartel interested
[118]
in profit only, you're harvesting poppies from seed
[120]
to harvest, that's obviously a very long wait.
[123]
Not only that, you need to man power to go
[125]
and harvest the paste from the poppy, bring it to a lab
[128]
and manufacture that into heroin.
[130]
If you are buying precursor chemicals from China,
[132]
you can basically have a couple of buckets, mix,
[134]
and you have fentanyl and you ship that right across.
[137]
There's no harvest, there's no man power.
[138]
Obviously, a lot better financially.
[141]
There are small time labs that can purchase chemicals
[145]
directly from China over the Internet or the dark net
[147]
and then they can manufacture the fentanyl
[149]
or make fraudulent prescription pills containing fentanyl
[152]
and there's no way to regulate them, it's just someone
[154]
who has no chemical background with some blenders.
[157]
What kind of counterfeit pain pills are you finding
[160]
the fentanyl in?
[160]
Oxycodone, Norco's, but we've also seen it in drugs
[164]
such as Xanax, which is not an opioid.
[167]
Pill shopping for any kind of drug on the street is
[169]
like playing Russian roulette.
[171]
What I want to do right now Leslie is take you
[172]
into our DEA lab to show you how powerful
[174]
and deadly this fentanyl really is.
[180]
Before we get started, I want you to get suited up.
[184]
Two milligrams is considered a lethal dosage of fentanyl.
[187]
It's really hard to actually see.
[189]
Just this amount can kill a human being?
[191]
Just this amount is enough to kill a human being.
[192]
To put it in context, a packet of sweetener contains
[195]
about one gram of material.
[197]
If you had fentanyl of one gram amount, that would be
[200]
500 lethal dosages.
[202]
When I'm actually handling fentanyl, I have
[204]
to protect myself, so I have NarCan just in case
[206]
I might have cross exposure.
[209]
What he's going to show us is 20 kilograms
[211]
of what was thought to be cocaine,
[213]
it actually is laced with fentanyl.
[215]
Wow.
[216]
How many counterfeit pain pills could this create?
[233]
The amount could take out 2,000,000 people.
[235]
2,000,000 people.
[238]
Everything you see right here, they look just
[240]
like the real thing, more than 20,000 Oxycodone
[244]
which are the most popular pain pills on the streets.
[247]
The one on the left is a real Oxycodone and the one
[250]
on the right is a fake one.
[252]
These tablets have really good quality and even
[254]
to a trained analyst, I can't tell the difference.
[256]
If each one contains some fentanyl, then potentially
[259]
10,000 tablets could be thousands of lethal dosages.
