What was once a largest electric company
[2]
in the United States, and is it still a
[5]
good bet for future returns and
[7]
stability? Stick around to find out. Hey
[16]
everyone Stock Ninja here. Welcome back!
[19]
Before we get started today I wanted to
[20]
give a huge shout out to Rich over at
[23]
the Richuation room. Last week I had the
[25]
privilege to be on his podcast and it
[27]
was a blast.
[28]
Rich runs an excellent podcast where he
[30]
interviews fellow investors on their
[32]
financial journeys. We had a great
[34]
conversation about stocks, investing
[36]
strategies, YouTube and all aspects in
[39]
between. I have linked his channel in the
[41]
description below and if you would like
[43]
to learn more about my personal
[44]
investing journey I have also linked to
[47]
that episode in the podcast as well. So
[49]
once again thank you Rich. Now on to
[52]
today's episode of Who Beat the S&P 500?
[54]
Today we will be looking into the
[57]
Utility Sector. Definitely one of the
[59]
more defensive industries the utility
[61]
sector is in charge of providing energy,
[63]
water, and essentials to the general
[65]
public.
[66]
Founded in 1983 today's company Dominion
[70]
Energy was once at the top of the
[72]
utility sectors list of companies in
[74]
terms of market cap. Let's see what kind
[76]
of returns a huge utility company like
[78]
Dominion would have given you over the
[80]
last twenty years. Had you invested
[83]
$10,000 into Dominion exactly 20 years
[86]
ago with dividends reinvested, you would
[89]
be sitting on a grand total of eighty
[91]
one thousand four hundred twenty two
[93]
dollars and sixty eight cents versus a
[95]
twenty nine thousand five hundred twenty
[97]
four dollars and thirty eight cents of
[99]
the S&P in the same time frame that is
[102]
an excellent seven hundred fourteen
[104]
point zero nine percent total return
[106]
over three and a half times that of the
[109]
SPS one hundred ninety five point four
[111]
two percent at a solid average annual
[114]
return of eleven point zero five percent
[116]
versus the five point five six percent
[119]
of the S&P in the same
[120]
time frame just a quick reminder don't
[123]

[126]

[128]
market cap of around 69 billion dollars
[131]
Dominion energy trades with the ticker
[133]
symbol of D listed in the utility sector
[136]
Dominion is currently a member of the
[138]
S&P 500 index on the new york stock
[140]
exchange with the quarterly dividend
[142]
distribution Dominion just recently
[145]
announced a 360 ninth consecutive
[147]
dividend or over 92 year straight of
[150]
dividend payments but wait a sec 92
[153]
years didn't I say that Dominion was
[155]
founded in 1983 so turns out these
[159]
consecutive dividends includes both the
[161]
current Dominion and their previous
[163]
parent company Virginia Electric Power
[165]
Company otherwise known as vep Co which
[169]
was founded in 1909 but rebranded in
[172]
1925 Dominion currently has a dividend
[175]
yield of 4.5 5% which equates to a three
[178]
dollar seventy six annual payout with a
[180]
current payout ratio of eighty six point
[182]
three six percent the payout ratio at
[185]
first glance is very high but this is
[187]
the case across the utility sector as a
[188]
whole with the majority of the payout
[190]
ratios being higher than seventy percent
[192]
with 16 years of consecutive dividend
[195]
growth Dominion has grown their dividend
[197]
at a seven point six nine percent
[199]
ten-year kegger or compound annual
[201]
growth rate and show signs of increasing
[203]
with an eight point eight seven percent
[205]
five-year kegger and a nine point four
[207]
fourth percent three-year kegger with
[209]
the relatively high dividend yield and
[211]
predictability in the utility sector
[213]
Dominion is an excellent stock to own in
[215]
any dividend portfolio purely from a
[217]
dividend perspective with over ninety
[219]
two years of dividend payment across
[221]
both its parent company and the current
[223]
Dominion Dominion will provide
[225]
consistency and reliable payments
[227]
recorded utility companies are highly
[229]
regulated at both the national level and
[232]
the state level there are some cases
[234]
where even local municipalities impose
[236]
some sort of regulation also something
[238]
that a lot of people might not be
[240]
familiar with is that utility companies
[242]
actually don't generate any revenue on
[245]
the products they sell all the products
[247]
they sell are sold at cost to the
[249]
customer so if you use a hundred dollars
[252]
in electricity this month that's
[253]
exactly how much the utility company
[255]
will charge you so how does Dominion
[257]
actually make money
[259]
utility companies generate income
[261]
through their investments in assets that
[263]
are used to provide their services the
[265]
more infrastructure that a utility
[266]
builds the higher the profits it can
[268]
generate with that being said let's take
[271]
a closer look and check out the minions
[272]
revenue segments with the fiscal year
[274]
running from January to December each
[276]
year Dominion generated sixteen point
[279]
four three billion dollars in fiscal
[281]
year 2019 up over 22 percent
[284]
year-over-year and growing around nine
[286]
point five percent annually the last
[288]
four years a recent change in dominions
[291]
operating and reporting structure has
[293]
their revenues separated into five
[294]
reportable segments Dominion energy
[297]
Virginia gas transmission and storage
[299]
gas distribution Dominion energy South
[302]
Carolina and contracted generations
[304]
starting with a smallest segment by
[307]
overall revenue at 7 percent the
[309]
contracted generation segment operates
[311]
more than 50 solar arrays under
[313]
long-term contracts with utilities large
[315]
customers and Millstone power stations
[318]
in Waterford Connecticut generating 11
[320]
percent of overall revenue the Dominion
[323]
energy South Carolina segment serves
[325]
seven hundred forty four thousand
[327]
electric customer accounts and 392,000
[330]
natural gas customer accounts the gas
[333]
distribution segment which accounts for
[335]
12% of overall revenue operates for
[337]
local natural gas distribution companies
[340]
serving Ohio Utah North Carolina West
[343]
Virginia Wyoming and Idaho with over
[346]
eighty eight thousand seven hundred
[347]
miles of pipelines and serving three
[350]
million customer accounts the gas
[352]
transmissions and storage segment is a
[354]
second largest segment generating twenty
[356]
four percent of overall revenue this
[358]
segment operates one of the nation's
[359]
largest natural gas storage systems
[361]
about ten thousand four hundred miles of
[364]
natural gas transmission gathering and
[366]
storage pipelines and a liquefied
[368]
natural gas terminal finally generating
[371]
46 percent of overall revenue the
[373]
Dominion energy Virginia segment is by
[375]
far the largest out of the five this
[378]
segment operates a vertically integrated
[379]
electric utility in Virginia and
[382]
Northeast North Carolina it currently
[384]
serves 2.6 million customer
[386]
Dominion is fairly diverse in terms of
[388]
revenue and relatively spread out this
[390]
gives potential investors some peace of
[392]
mind in terms of revenue stability over
[394]
the long run now let's see how the
[397]
company fare in the dot-com bubble crash
[398]
great financial recession and House
[400]
currently training in the downturn in
[402]
2020 Dominion fell forty nine point four
[405]
seven percent during the dot-com bubble
[406]
crash just under 1% less than the S&P is
[409]
fifty point four one percent decline
[411]
with Dominion barely performing better
[413]
than the S&P here when looking at the
[415]
great financial crisis Dominion fell
[417]
forty five point zero seven percent
[419]
about twelve percent less than the 57.61
[422]
percent declined by the S&P Dominion
[425]
with a much stronger performance during
[427]
this recession check marks for Dominion
[429]
again during the downturn in twenty
[431]
twenty Dominion fell thirty six point
[433]
four three percent compared to the S&P
[434]
is thirty five point five nine percent
[436]
decline Dominion underperforming by just
[439]
a hair in this downturn that being said
[441]
from these three instances we can infer
[444]
that utility companies like Dominion
[446]
will more than likely perform slightly
[448]
better or a bit worse in the overall
[450]
market the losses though will be heavily
[452]
mitigated when taking into account the
[454]
dividends that come with Dominion the
[456]
defensive nature of the utility sector
[458]
shining brightly during recessions
[459]
headquartered in Richmond Virginia with
[462]
around twenty one thousand full-time
[463]
employees Dominion energy is currently
[466]
led by longtime CEO of Thomas F Farrell
[469]
the second having been at the helm since
[471]
January of 2006 Farrell currently leads
[474]
an upper management team of twenty two
[476]
people the majority of the 22 member
[478]
team have been with Dominion for a large
[480]
part of their careers as well as some
[482]
newer additions within the last few
[484]
years when looking at the performance of
[486]
the stock since Farrell took over on
[488]
January 1st 2006 we can see a
[490]
respectable 121 point eight three
[493]
percent increase in that timeframe once
[495]
again it is worth mentioning that this
[498]
does not include dividends with
[500]
dividends added the actual rate of
[502]
return will be much higher taking a
[504]
quick look at the institution's
[505]
currently holding Dominion we can see
[507]
capital research at fifth place with a
[509]
3.5 5% stake barely edging them out for
[513]
fourth is Wellington management with a
[514]
three point six 5% stake with almost a
[517]
two percent higher state
[519]
eight Street which is quickly becoming a
[521]
staple among the top five is a third
[523]
with a 5.4 percent stake in the company
[525]
the institution and second place is as
[528]
expected
[528]
Blackrock with a 7.2 percent stake and
[531]
last but not least Vanguard with a
[533]
whopping 8.4 one percent stake in
[536]
dominions their assets in the company
[538]
equalling nearly five billion dollars
[540]
due to the high regulatory nature of
[543]
utilities it is important for Dominion
[545]
to maintain good relationships with
[547]
regulatory bodies and policies if
[549]
anything goes wrong here it will more
[550]
than likely impact the stock price the
[552]
type of commodities that are used to
[554]
generate the electricity could also hurt
[556]
the company if prices were to suddenly
[558]
surge upwards another major risk is
[560]
drastic underperformance against the
[562]
overall market in the case of an
[564]
extended bull market as utilities are
[567]
more defensive in nature
[568]
people might shift their focus to more
[570]
growth heavy stocks during such times
[572]
lastly high interest rates with Dominion
[575]
and other utilities having a high dead
[577]
load as is their nature high interest
[579]
rates will likely hurt the company in
[581]
financing new debt in my opinion
[585]
Dominion energy is a company in which
[587]
you can invest confidently they have an
[589]
excellent track record over the years of
[591]
stock performance dividend payments and
[593]
solid dividend growth even with the more
[596]
defensive nature of investing in a
[598]
utility company it should be noted that
[599]
Dominion did in fact beat the S&P 500
[602]
over the last 20 years and has continued
[604]
to pay out a strong above average
[606]
dividend throughout the same time period
[608]
though there are some risks involved
[610]
with investing utilities it is no doubt
[612]
a more risk-averse investment overall
