Buying Gold Coins - Everything You Need To Know - YouTube

Channel: 2 is 1

[1]
Maybe you've been thinking that you'd like to聽 buy some gold and I know I've been thinking聽聽
[7]
that I'd like to fix some videos where I talked聽 about buying gold. So I came up with a plan.
[22]
I've posted quite a few videos covering the聽 different aspects of buying gold, but I've聽聽
[26]
never done a full buyer guide for newcomers聽 to gold. I'm going to fix that right now.聽
[31]
this video is meant to tell you everything you聽 need to know to buy gold or silver without making聽聽
[36]
expensive mistakes. Each part of this guide聽 will be marked as a chapter in the description聽聽
[42]
so you'll be able to skip directly to that聽 section if you need to come back over time聽聽
[47]
by the time we're done here you should be聽 able to confidently purchase gold and maybe even聽聽
[51]
have a little fun with it. So let's get started.聽 The first thing you need to know is what to buy.
[58]
if you're new to gold you should聽 focus on the most popular type of gold聽聽
[62]
and here in the United States it's聽 government-backed bullion coins. Bullion coins are聽聽
[68]
investment-grade coins that don't carry additional聽 numismatic or collector value, so this means you're聽聽
[74]
paying for the gold content plus a reasonable聽 premium above the spot price of gold聽聽
[80]
the US Mint produces two gold bullion coins each year聽- the American Gold Eagle and the American Buffalo聽聽
[87]
the American Gold Eagle is the most popular gold聽 coin in the United States and it's second only to聽聽
[92]
the South African Krugerrand worldwide. This coin聽 was introduced in 1986 and it comes in four sizes聽聽
[101]
but for now we're going to focus on the one ounce聽 size. This coin contains one full ounce of gold聽聽
[108]
if you notice the color is a little different聽 than the others here, that's because it's a 22聽聽
[112]
karat gold coin. That means that it's 91.67% gold and the remaining 8% is聽聽
[120]
copper and silver alloy that's meant to harden聽 the coin and make it more resistant to wear聽聽
[126]
but you'll see on the coin that the amount of聽 gold is printed directly on it, and it is one full ounce of gold聽聽
[131]
you'll also see that it has a face聽 value of $50, so you could go into聽聽
[136]
a store and buy $50 worth of goods聽 with it, but before you try that let me know聽聽
[144]
because I'll buy it from you for 60. and the聽 next coin the U.S. Mint produces is the聽聽
[150]
American Buffalo - this is a 24 karat gold coin that's聽 refined to 9999 fine gold聽聽
[159]
so you'll see it has a lot more yellow color聽 like you'd expect from pure gold, but in most聽聽
[164]
ways it's very similar to the American Gold Eagle.聽 It has the same face value of $50聽聽
[170]
it has the same outer dimensions... very similar coin.聽 Because it's pure gold, though, you will need to聽聽
[176]
keep these coins in capsules, and you'll have to be聽 careful with how you handle them because gold will聽聽
[181]
scratch and dent very easily. You do not want to聽 let your four-year-old nephew play with this coin聽聽
[189]
so if you live in the United States聽 and you're going to buy one gold聽coin
[192]
one of these two coins would be your best聽 choice. My recommendation for the new gold buyer聽聽
[198]
would be the American Gold Eagle, but if you聽 feel you'd prefer the aesthetics of pure gold聽聽
[204]
the Buffalo is a fantastic choice. And it's聽 probably my personal favorite聽聽
[210]
the Buffalo was introduced in 2006 and both of these coins have聽been mostly unchanged since their introduction聽聽
[217]
but the American Gold Eagle will actually聽 be going through a redesign later in 2021聽聽
[224]
now if you don't live in the United States or if聽 you wanted a non-U.S. gold coin for whatever reason聽聽
[230]
there are plenty of other聽 popular government-backed options聽聽
[235]
this Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was the first聽 pure gold bullion coin, and it's one of the聽聽
[240]
most popular gold coins in the world. It was聽 introduced in 1979, and you'll only see slight聽聽
[246]
changes to the coin over time. That includes the聽 purity changing from three nines fine to four聽nines fine
[252]
but again, regardless of purity each聽 of these coins has one full ounce of gold content聽聽
[260]
other popular coin choices would be the South聽 African Krugerrand and the Austrian Philharmonic聽聽
[266]
and if you live in another country of course you'd聽 want to go with the local favorite, and these would聽聽
[271]
include coins like the British Britannia, the聽 Australian Kangaroo, and the Chinese Gold Panda聽聽
[277]
now gold bars are options as well but they聽 just aren't as popular in the United States聽聽
[282]
but you can find popular bars produced by PAMP聽 Suisse, Valcambi, Perth Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint聽聽
[291]
personally I'd recommend sticking to coins聽 for initial purchases just to keep us focused聽聽
[297]
now the next thing you're going to need to know聽 is how much a gold coin should cost, and the price聽聽
[303]
of gold is going to fluctuate, and it's going to聽 be different for three primary reasons聽聽
[309]
first, the spot price of gold which is the value of gold 聽 at the moment and the next is the premium聽聽
[314]
which would be like the markup cost above that spot聽 price, and then finally you'll have sales tax which聽聽
[321]
rarely applies to one ounce gold bullion coins, but聽 it might be a factor聽聽
[328]
spot price at any given time can be found with a quick google search.聽 This is a Kitco chart, and it will show you the current聽聽
[334]
standard price of gold as well as its performance聽 over time. The premium depends on what you're聽buying,
[341]
where you're buying, and when you're buying, but聽 you'll find that premium is typically about 5%聽聽
[346]
give or take on one ounce gold coins, so if聽 the spot price of gold is about $1,900聽聽
[353]
like it is in this chart ,then the price聽 of that coin might be around $2,000聽聽
[360]
but you'll see lots of coins with much higher聽 premiums, and if you're new to gold you should聽聽
[365]
avoid them regardless of how pretty they are聽 or how collectible somebody tells you they聽might become
[370]
here in the United States you聽 might find that a Gold Buffalo coin will cost聽聽
[375]
$2,010 and a Gold Canadian Maple Leaf here might cost $1,980
[384]
now both of these coins have the exact same amount聽 of gold but the difference in premium聽聽
[390]
is going to be based on popularity and in the event that聽 you were selling those very same coins you would聽聽
[396]
get more back from the Gold Buffalo here in the聽 United States than you would for the Maple Leaf聽聽
[400]
now I won't go into this in depth because this is聽 a buyer's guide rather than a seller's guide聽聽
[406]
but in the event that you wanted to sell your gold聽 coins you could expect to get about spot price聽聽
[412]
back and not much more, so you'll get a little聽 bit more for a Gold Buffalo than you will for a聽聽
[417]
Canadian Maple Leaf, but again not a whole lot over聽 spot, so just keep that in mind 聽聽
[424]
if that seems a little bit scary, the other thing to keep in mind聽 is that the spot price of gold does fluctuate聽聽
[429]
up and down, but over time it increases, and that聽 brings us to the next part which is where to buy the coins聽聽
[436]
the two primary places you can聽 safely buy gold coins are your local coin shops聽(LCS)聽
[443]
and online bullion dealers. And to find out if聽 you have a local coin shop in your area聽聽
[449]
you can do a quick google search for "gold coin shops聽 in dallas texas" or wherever it is that you live聽聽
[455]
you'll want to weed out the jewelers that come up聽 in that search and then whatever's left, give them聽a call聽
[460]
a really easy qualifying question is聽 to ask them if they have any American Gold Eagles聽聽
[467]
in stock and if they say yes, you've probably聽 found someone who deals with a lot of gold coins聽聽
[474]
and once you've found a shop, you want to do a聽 little bit of research before you go into buy聽聽
[479]
coin shops are not like car dealerships where聽 they walk you through the process, and the people聽聽
[485]
who run them are a little bit of a mixed bag - they聽 aren't all going to be sweethearts 聽聽
[491]
what I do when I'm traveling is call the shop and I'll聽 ask them if I have a specific coin and then聽聽
[497]
I'll ask them for the price so that might be like, 聽 "hey do you have any one ounce American Gold Eagles in stock?"
[503]
and if they say yes, fantastic well then聽 I'll ask, "how much do you get for them right now?"聽
[509]
and that tells me what they have, but it聽 also tells me what they charge for premium聽聽
[514]
your local coin shops will typically聽 have the best prices on gold coins and聽聽
[518]
it's good to be familiar with them聽 just in case you ever want to sell聽聽
[523]
but you should know that most of their coins will聽 be from the secondary market - what that means is聽聽
[527]
they won't all be in perfect condition, and the聽 selection will be limited - that shouldn't turn聽聽
[533]
you off from the local coin shop, it just means聽 that you're going to have to shop a little bit聽聽
[538]
now online dealers will typically cost you a bit聽 more, but you'll be able to shop and compare聽聽
[543]
and buy whatever you want, but you have to keep in mind聽 that having hundreds or thousands of options isn't聽聽
[549]
always a good thing, so if you're shopping online聽 keep in mind that everything I mentioned earlier聽聽
[554]
about gold coins applies here - you always want to聽 start with the most popular coins in your region聽聽
[560]
now online dealers sell on their websites聽 and other marketplaces like eBay but if you聽聽
[566]
aren't familiar with the sellers and you聽 want to be confident with your purchase聽聽
[569]
I recommend going directly to the dealer's聽 website. There are dozens of options聽
[575]
but for the sake of giving you聽 an easy place to start I'll give you two聽聽
[580]
APMEX which is the screen that I was just showing聽 you and SD Bullion - APMEX is going to have the聽聽
[586]
widest selection and the fastest shipping where聽 SD Bullion will have cheaper prices 聽聽
[593]
I have zero dogs in this fight - I'm certainly not being聽 paid by either of those to tell you to go shop there聽聽
[598]
they just happen to be two options that I know聽 that you could start with. The biggest issue with聽聽
[604]
buying online is that price is tiered depending on聽 your payment method, so paying with a credit card聽聽
[610]
is going to cost you more in premium than聽 if you were to pay through a wire transfer聽聽
[615]
or by sending them a check - that of course takes聽 longer, but regardless of whether you prefer to pay聽聽
[621]
cash in person at a local coin shop, or you want聽 to go online and buy, I would check both the local聽聽
[628]
coin shop and the online dealers before buying聽 from one or the other. Okay so up until now we've聽聽
[636]
talked about one ounce gold coins, but if you'd聽 prefer to dip your toe into buying gold you have聽聽
[642]
other options here as well. The primary sizes for聽 gold bullion are going to be the 1 oz coin,聽聽
[648]
a 1/2 oz, a 1/4 oz and a 1/10 oz coin聽 the spot price is the same for each, so a 1/10 oz聽聽
[656]
gold coin is worth 1/10 the spot price of聽 gold at the time, but the percentage of premium聽聽
[662]
that you pay increases as you go down in size聽 so it costs more to accumulate an ounce of gold聽聽
[668]
if you buy 10 1/10 oz gold coins rather than聽 a single one ounce gold coin. So that 1/10 oz聽聽
[677]
American Gold Eagle right there might cost about聽 $230 while the 1 oz Eagle costs $2,000聽聽
[685]
so 10 of those would cost $2,300 but聽聽
[690]
would be worth the same amount in terms of聽 gold content as that 1 oz gold coin聽聽
[695]
now you'll typically be able to get some of聽 that premium back in a sale, but it'll cost聽聽
[700]
you more to buy gold if you choose fractional聽 gold coins - there's just no way around that聽聽
[705]
and whether you're new to gold or not, fractional聽 gold coins can still be really good options聽聽
[711]
I've been buying gold for 12 years and聽 I still buy 1/4 oz gold coins聽聽
[717]
these coins will probably cost around $530聽 again that's based on a $1,900 spot price聽聽
[724]
and that's give or take, so it would聽 cost you more than a single 1 oz gold coin to聽聽
[730]
accumulate that ounce with these coins as well,聽 but they're a price point decision聽聽
[736]
$530 might be an easier purchase each time. If聽 you're trying to buy U.S. Mint coins in fractional sizes
[744]
it's only the American Gold Eagle that聽 comes in the fractional sizes - you can't find聽聽
[751]
American Gold Buffaloes in 1/2, 1/4 or 1/10 oz except from 2008 and that was a limited聽聽
[758]
run, so they typically cost a lot more. So if you聽 want a fractional gold coin and you want that聽聽
[765]
to be a 24 karat coin you're going to be looking聽 at other options like this Austrian Philharmonic聽聽
[771]
which does come in all of those sizes just like聽 the Canadian Maple Leaf and a number of other聽聽
[776]
popular government-backed coins as well.聽 Okay, so we've covered all of the hard stuff
[782]
the last thing you need to know is how to store your gold.聽 When you walk out of the coin shop or you open聽聽
[789]
your shipping box ,your coins are going to come in聽cheap flips, and if your coin is a 24 carat coin聽聽
[796]
then you'll want it in a capsule like you see聽 here, and you can find these capsules in a lot聽聽
[802]
of different places - you can find them at the local聽 coin shop, you can find them at online dealer sites,聽聽
[807]
on Amazon, etc. You can also find tubes if you plan聽 to continue to buy - you put your capsules in the聽tubes
[813]
you'll find [tubes] at all of the same places.聽 A quick tip on finding the right capsules...聽
[820]
APMEX tells you on the product detail pages what聽 size capsule you'll need, and even if you aren't聽聽
[827]
buying from them, it's easy enough to take that聽 info and pick them up from Amazon or wherever you want聽聽
[832]
once you have your gold coins protected聽 in those capsules and tubes, it's best to keep聽聽
[838]
them in a personal safe or a safe deposit box.聽 And that is it. Now there are a lot more details聽聽
[846]
that I cover in individual videos, but that should聽 give you enough to be able to buy gold confidently聽聽
[852]
if you have any questions feel free to drop them聽 in the comments. I do my best to respond and the聽聽
