NY Coronavirus Deaths Hit All-Time High, But Hospitalizations Remain Flat | TODAY - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
we're gonna start with mixed news on the
[2]
corona virus outbreak while New York is
[4]
seeing the curve flattened this morning
[6]
the state has more confirmed cases
[9]
162,000 than any country in the world
[13]
nationwide the total is quickly
[15]
approaching a half million with nearly
[17]
17,000 deaths there are also more new
[20]
signs of the economic impact during what
[22]
would normally be a busy week nearly 80
[25]
percent of the nation's hotels are
[27]
vacant right now and we have some
[29]
positive news on the health front the
[31]
health of British prime minister Boris
[32]
Johnson who's now been moved out of ICU
[35]
we do have complete coverage we're going
[37]
to start with NBC's Gabe Gutierrez he's
[39]
at the National Tennis Center in Queens
[41]
where a new field hospital is set to
[43]
open hey Gabe good morning how'd a good
[47]
morning this is normally the site of the
[49]
US Open but later today it's set to see
[51]
its first kovin 19 patients the indoor
[54]
training facility here is being
[55]
converted into a nearly 500 bed hospital
[58]
but the hope is all of that space won't
[60]
be needed this morning in hard-hit New
[64]
York the curve is flattening the latest
[67]
numbers show hospitalizations ICU
[69]
admissions and intubation have slowed
[72]
dramatically we had 200 net increase in
[76]
hospitalizations which you can see is
[79]
the lowest number we've had since this
[81]
nightmare started but deaths spiked yet
[85]
again to the highest level of the
[87]
pandemic nearly 800 lives lost in just
[90]
24 hours so far more than 7,000 have
[93]
died in New York State alone leading to
[96]
this startling sight at a city cemetery
[98]
workers and protective hazmat suits
[101]
burying five times more unclaimed bodies
[104]
in a mass grave in New York men are
[107]
dying almost twice as often as women and
[110]
nationally they're getting tested less
[112]
this is to all of our men out there no
[114]
matter what age group if you have
[117]
symptoms you should be tested still
[119]
while the health system is stressed it's
[121]
not over capacity though a new temporary
[124]
hospital is set to open today at the
[126]
National Tennis Center the Javits
[128]
Convention Center converted to housed
[130]
2,500 patients as few
[132]
than 2-hundred right now Mount Sinai
[135]
Hospital has scrapped plans to stage the
[137]
sick inside the Cathedral of st. John
[139]
the Divine but Mayor Bill de Blasio says
[142]
he expects social distancing
[144]
restrictions will stay in place here
[146]
through at least mid-may you cannot for
[149]
a moment get ahead of things that sort
[152]
of count your chickens before they're
[153]
hatched or this disease will have a
[156]
resurgence and we could actually be
[158]
worse off I've just still at Mount Sinai
[161]
doctor Sonam Ahmed sees hope returning
[165]
we hear good things every day she got a
[167]
text from a colleague before she started
[169]
her night shift she texted a number and
[173]
said this is the number of patients
[176]
whose lives we have been saving over
[179]
just the past day together we're gonna
[183]
overcome this a new study by Mount Sinai
[185]
found that the virus began circulating
[188]
here in New York in mid-february and
[190]
came largely from Europe not China as
[192]
for this facility it's now meant to
[195]
provide relief to nearby Elmhurst
[197]
Hospital which has seen some of the
[199]
worst of this crisis Savannah all right
[203]
Gabe your chair is leading us off thank
[205]
you and in the meantime the toll on the
[207]
US economy continues to mount more and
[210]
more laid off workers or filing
[211]
unemployment claims 10% of the US labor
[215]
force in the last three weeks have filed
[217]
for claims and it's adding urgency to
[219]
this debate when can the economy reopen
[222]
and when should it NBC's Kristen Welker
[224]
has the latest on that Kristen good
[226]
morning Savannah good morning to you
[230]
president Trump has said he wants to
[232]
reopen the economy with a bang some of
[234]
his top officials say they want to start
[237]
that process as early as May but some
[239]
health officials are warning that moving
[242]
too quickly could lead to a renewed
[244]
outbreak and even more economic pain
[246]
this morning the debate over when to
[249]
reopen the economy is intensifying with
[252]
some administration officials eyeing
[254]
next month as a possible target eight on
[256]
Thursday President Trump predicting a
[258]
rapid turnaround
[260]
when the country is back in business I
[262]
think we're going to open up strong I
[264]
think we're going to open up very
[265]
successfully and I'd like to say even
[268]
more successfully than before adding
[270]
urgency in additional six point six
[273]
million Americans filed jobless claims
[275]
last week bringing the total number of
[277]
Americans seeking unemployment benefits
[279]
to more than 17 million in the past
[281]
month but is the country ready to get
[284]
back to work
[285]
given the virus is still spreading so
[287]
you need a nationwide we have a great
[292]
testing system we have the best right
[294]
now the best testing system in the world
[295]
and while some top Democrats acknowledge
[298]
testing has improved they also argue any
[301]
discussion of reopening the economy is
[303]
premature without more testing all
[305]
across the country shelter-in-place is
[308]
making a very big difference but we
[310]
really don't have an evaluation until we
[313]
know the extent of the problem
[315]
testing testing yes still plans are
[318]
underway to lay the groundwork with
[320]
administration officials telling NBC
[322]
News the president is poised to announce
[324]
a second economic task force that will
[327]
focus on reopening the country in phases
[329]
I think as soon as the president feels
[332]
comfortable with the medical issues we
[334]
are making everything necessary that
[337]
American companies and American workers
[338]
can be open for business but help cannot
[342]
come soon enough for Americans like
[344]
Kelly Thompson the single mom in Texas
[346]
laid off from her job as a store manager
[349]
has been struggling to get unemployment
[351]
benefits I've set my alarm to try to do
[354]
it at different times I've done it right
[355]
before 8 a.m. when they open and there's
[357]
just no getting through Congress has
[362]
passed trillions of dollars in stimulus
[364]
and this week lawmakers were trying to
[366]
pass an additional 250 billion dollars
[369]
for small businesses those talks have
[371]
hit a snag with sticking points
[374]
including how much money to spend on
[375]
hospitals state and local governments
[378]
the Senate is going to be back next week
[380]
with a lot of pressure on both sides of
[382]
the aisle to get something done Hoda all
[384]
right Kristin thank you let's bring in
[385]
NBC News senior business correspondent
[387]
Stephanie ruhle Steph those numbers
[388]
again 17 million people who filed for
[391]
unemployment and I
[393]
can't get that image out of my head in
[394]
San Antonio like 6000 people lined up to
[398]
get food at a food bank I mean I guess
[401]
the question is like when are people
[403]
gonna get their checks where's the money
[407]
so the thing is Hoda Kristin made a
[410]
great point the government is making
[412]
massive efforts from the Treasury
[414]
Department to the Fed to Congress
[416]
passing huge stimulus bills but remember
[418]
this is a country of 330 million people
[422]
we've got 30 million small businesses
[424]
and almost 50,000 corporations so to get
[427]
this money out logistically is proving
[431]
massively difficult and it's only adding
[433]
to people's frustrations listen you
[435]
completely understand why the President
[437]
or Secretary minuchin would want to get
[439]
people enthusiastic and excited about
[442]
saying we're gonna get right back out
[444]
there and get back to work but when
[446]
people are saying I can't apply for
[447]
unemployment because the website isn't
[449]
working or the small business loan that
[451]
Kristin was referring to that's caused
[453]
huge strain this week so one of the
[456]
reasons the government is now asking for
[458]
more money to give to small businesses
[460]
is because there's such demand and one
[463]
of the reasons there's a delay in it the
[464]
question is how do we get the money to
[467]
the most needy people Hoda let's say you
[470]
run a small daycare center at home and
[472]
you don't have a sophisticated payroll
[474]
system but you're a small business and
[476]
let's say I'm a small business that runs
[478]
a law firm should you and I both get in
[480]
line at the same time to get that loan
[482]
well chances are if I'm the law firm I'm
[484]
gonna get that application in because
[486]
I've got a tax lawyer an accountant and
[488]
I can make that happen but if you run
[490]
that small daycare center
[491]
you're completely shut down you really
[494]
need that money and right now there
[496]
hasn't been prioritization for those who
[498]
need it most but that's one of the
[500]
things they've got to figure out how to
[501]
address let's talk about the reopening
[503]
of business secretary minuchin said he
[505]
was hoping for May I mean is the economy
[508]
one of these things that you just flip a
[509]
switch and boom everyone's back to work
[514]
well that's the thing it's not Hoda you
[517]
cannot look at this like it's a snow day
[519]
and we said well the roads are clear
[521]
let's all head back out there remember
[523]
it wasn't the President or even the
[525]
federal government that
[526]
things down the first time you and I had
[529]
this conversation in a world moment when
[531]
it was business that did it it was the
[533]
NBA Adam Silver that listened to health
[536]
experts that said I've got to put health
[538]
first and shut my season down so yes
[541]
many people the president is putting
[543]
together this economic taskforce the
[545]
question is who is the public health
[548]
expert leading or at least part of that
[551]
task force to say all right in every
[553]
city and state is the federal government
[555]
going to provide the money for mass
[557]
testing to make sure when we head back
[560]
out there we're going to be safe because
[562]
you've seen in other places for example
[564]
in Asia in Singapore where they said
[566]
let's get people back out there and
[568]
unless you do that with mass testing you
[571]
run the risk of people getting sicker
[573]
and that's shutting right back down all
[575]
right all right Stephanie ruhle Steph
[577]
thank you
[577]
Savannah over to you yeah Hoda another
[581]
big impact of this health crisis and
[583]
we've been talking about it all week
[585]
long how people are changing their plans
[587]
to celebrate the holiest days of the
[589]
year but in some places across the
[591]
country in-person services are still
[593]
going to be held against the advice of
[596]
public health authorities nbc's sam
[598]
brock is in florida one of the states
[600]
that giving folks a choice about that
[602]
Sam good morning Savannah good morning
[606]
on this Good Friday normally you would
[608]
expect to see this Cathedral packed with
[610]
people getting ready to pray but instead
[612]
the services here are going to be
[614]
streamed online as they will for every
[616]
single parish in the Archdiocese of
[618]
Miami this is the state though says you
[619]
can still observe in person despite the
[622]
potential health consequences
[624]
[Music]
[626]
this Easter Sunday a once unimaginable
[628]
sight many churches nationwide sitting
[631]
empty on the holiest day of the year the
[634]
worship from home approach extending
[636]
from Washington will be attending church
[638]
right in the living room at the vice
[640]
president's residence dick Ovid 19
[642]
hotspots all across the country
[643]
including South Florida where more than
[646]
a hundred parishes in the Miami area
[648]
will be live-streaming for safety we're
[650]
not going to bring bring crowds together
[652]
to put these people our congregants in
[655]
danger but the state's governor refuses
[658]
to extend Florida's stay-at-home order
[659]
to religious services as we've said many
[662]
times the state of Florida is not going
[665]
to through government coercion closed a
[667]
church synagogue or place of worship the
[669]
debate playing out in several virus
[672]
stricken areas we should not be fearful
[674]
a Philadelphia pastor doubling down on
[677]
in-person prayer facemasks will be
[680]
provided to all who walk through the
[681]
church doors on Sunday for those who
[683]
attend there will be no more than three
[685]
per pew while in hard-hit Louisiana
[690]
drive-thru benedictions with hundreds of
[693]
cars in New Orleans Archbishop Gregory
[696]
Aymond who recovered from the
[698]
coronavirus offering a real blessing
[700]
from up high boarding a world war two
[702]
ear a plane with a local rabbi for a
[705]
spirit flight at the same time near
[707]
Baton Rouge pastor Tony spell says he'll
[712]
hold services at his church defying not
[715]
only his own governor but the advice of
[717]
many health experts we pray for all
[719]
those that are fighting the disease Joel
[721]
Osteen's megachurch plans to stream
[723]
services with Kanye West and Mariah
[725]
Carey providing the music millions of
[728]
Americans separated by distance but
[730]
celebrating together it will be even
[732]
harder not to be in the pew on Easter
[734]
Sunday but it's the right thing to do if
[737]
we care about each other and for the
[742]
states that do still allow in-person
[743]
services social distancing guidelines
[746]
still apply that means six feet in
[747]
between people and no hugs or handshakes
[750]
many officials though suggesting this
[752]
year put tradition aside and practice
[754]
your faith from your home Savannah back
[756]
to you
[758]
Thank You Sam in just ahead we're gonna
[760]
have a live report from the Vatican on
[762]
how the pandemic is impacting services
[764]
at the world's most famous church hotel
[766]
all right now Savannah's something that
[768]
will brighten up our morning cities
[769]
across the country there lighten up blue
[772]
to show their support and gratitude for
[773]
our health care heroes first responders
[776]
and other essential workers so last
[778]
night buildings and bridges and sports
[780]
stadiums and landmarks from coast to
[782]
coast
[782]
they were illuminated with bright blue
[785]
lights so more than 400 businesses and
[787]
venues participated in the light at blue
[790]
campaign organizers call it simply a
[792]
heartfelt thank you to those who are
[794]
going to work to keep our country going
[797]
and we say hats off yeah yeah I called
[804]
it a blue light special what you've got
[810]
going heading into Easter weekend well
[814]
I'm wearing blue too unfortunately we've
[817]
got some severe weather to talk about
[819]
starting tomorrow for a big swath of the
[821]
country take a look right now we've got
[823]
a risk of severe weather tomorrow into
[825]
tomorrow night hail damaging winds for
[828]
20 people in the plains southern plains
[829]
isolated tornado threat and then look at
[832]
this Easter Sunday sadly we've got 56
[834]
million people thankfully everybody
[836]
hunkered down at home but we could see
[838]
large and long tract tornadoes damaging
[840]
wind gusts of 75 miles per hour and hail
[843]
one inch or longer Saturday it
[845]
intensifies over the plains gusty storms
[847]
for Texas Sunday Louisiana to Ohio heavy
[851]
rain and isolated flooding possible
[852]
monday very heavy rain for the Northeast
[855]
with blustery winds and snow into
[857]
Wisconsin and Michigan rainfall amounts
[860]
we're talking flooding possible at
[862]
possibilities 4 to 6 inches from Texas
[865]
all the way into the Virginia's and the
[867]
Appalachians and then behind the system
[869]
look at this snowfall we're talking
[871]
anywhere from 3 to 12 inches of snow
[873]
from the Dakotas Montana all the way to
[876]
the U P of Michigan
[885]
you
