Formal Front Garden Design Makeover - YouTube

Channel: Garden Ninja: Lee Burkhill

[4]
Welcome back to Garden Ninja today we're in Manchester and we're doing a front
[9]
garden transformation so gonna turn this front garden into a formal dream and
[14]
we've got Morris and Ball the RHS award winning landscapers here today helping
[18]
out our there transform this over the next week and keep you up to date on the
[22]
progress I'm gonna turn this into something at the dream garden
[30]
The period properties garden was completely overgrown and the client had
[34]
asked me to come in to create something that was beautiful but also low
[37]
maintenance it also had to be in keeping with the age and style of the property
[43]
by using a formal design we could mirror the Georgian proportions of the house it
[48]
also gave a clean tidy look to this new front garden and the use of spheres and
[52]
repetition of this shape to bring cohesion to the design
[70]
So we're nearly at the end of the build today today we will go to the planting so
[75]
the terraces we put down with York stone and steps it up I'm now going to plant
[79]
up these evergreen box balls and also the Bays trees these are going to feature as the
[84]
main structural point of the garden, they are then going to be softened by a bed full
[88]
of Lavender, Alliums and some really nice corten steel planters what do now is using
[95]
the planting plan that laying out all these ever green shrubs to make sure that
[99]
they are in perfect position once I've done that I'll dig a hole and commit them to the ground
[116]
So I've got the structure now with the Evergreen Bay trees box balls and now
[121]
moving on to the edge these are beautiful Carex that will give
[124]
evergreen color and will really soften this edge and then infill it with a load
[129]
of Lavender (Lavender hidcoat) to fill all the space over time
[133]
burst up with these bright purple scented flowers during the summer and get
[137]
those in now and show you the next phase So the hallmark for formal design is
[142]
symmetry and repetition what I have done in this garden is repeated this ball shape
[147]
through the box and the bay throughout to collects it together as a formal
[151]
design I've also used symmetry in edging the design
[155]
with the Carex and making sure that everything is in proportion
[170]
So the lads have just finished laying the York stone steps are done all pointings finished
[175]
and its been left for a few days to set then we've fixed these Corten steel planters
[180]
here which I will backfill then plant these beautiful blue Agapanthus so with the
[186]
Corten steel planters what's I've done is mirrored the proportion of the Georgian property windows
[190]
see that these Georgian window panels there are 4 panels that are symmetrical so the Corten planters
[196]
are also still a proportion of equally sized and theres 4 of them which takes your eye
[202]
from the planters to the window and back again
[208]
The proportions are really key in garden design and if you get them wrong things
[212]
can look higgledy-piggledy or just at odds with each other so by taking his windows
[217]
mirroring with the planters it helps pull the garden towards the
[221]
house make and make it look like one cohesive design. So I'm just about to put
[226]
the Blue Agapanthus into these corten steel planters now and
[230]
Agapanthus love to have the roots restricted So I;ve put an upside down plant pot
[234]
at the bottom of these pots to try and restrict the space because they're quite
[237]
tall by restricting the roots you're going to help this to flower because in
[242]
those conditions puts all its energy into growth and flowering so restrict the
[246]
roots and make sure that you're not putting it to a huge container because
[249]
you'll just get loads of foliage and no flowers
[265]
So I've just finished this for my front garden make over let's have a look at how it looked before!
[275]
So you've got gorgeous York stone steps your stone terrace everything's in
[280]
proportion repetition symmetry some really formal planting this will look great all year round
[287]
So I'm going to pack up my tools and get on to the next job! If you've liked this video
