with an estimated net worth of roughly
[2]
190 billion dollars amazon founder and
[6]
former ceo jeff bezos is the richest
[8]
person in the world by a significant
[10]
margin however bezos hasn't earned all
[13]
that money by being a nice guy
[15]
here's the dark truth about jeff bezos
[18]
when people discuss jeff bezos a
[20]
recurring theme seems to be his
[22]
insistence on holding all the strings he
[23]
can reach bezos stepped down as amazon's
[26]
ceo in july 2021 but his former
[28]
employees and critics have had things to
[30]
say about his tenure in an interview
[32]
with cbs news noel tishi from the
[34]
university of michigan described bezos
[36]
as a quote control freak and amazon as a
[39]
one-man show business insider tells the
[41]
story of former amazon engineer steve
[44]
yaeggy who went even further by saying
[46]
jeff bezos made ordinary control freaks
[48]
look like stoned hippies
[50]
bezos seemed to be fairly unapologetic
[52]
about this and was known to tell his
[54]
employees that they should pay him to
[55]
work at amazon yaeggi did admit that
[57]
bezos's tendency to micromanage was
[59]
overshadowed by the fact that he's
[61]
extremely smart and often far ahead of
[63]
his time however that didn't make things
[65]
any easier for his employees in 2002 the
[68]
ceo suddenly demanded that all his
[70]
engineering teams must rebuild their
[72]
systems from the ground up to build
[74]
amazon into a platform where every
[76]
system was compatible and that outside
[78]
developers could easily access he also
[80]
promised to fire every single person who
[82]
couldn't pull off this massive
[83]
undertaking
[85]
to say jeff bezos was not the world's
[87]
most softly spoken boss is like saying
[89]
that the lemon is not the sweetest fruit
[91]
in his book the everything store author
[93]
brad stone describes bezos's tendency to
[95]
go ballistic when employee didn't meet
[97]
his standards the billionaire had an
[99]
array of hyperbolic and harsh insults he
[101]
spewed at the unfortunate targets of his
[103]
ire with such anger that a blood vessel
[105]
bulged on his head some of these attacks
[108]
were more or less understandable such as
[109]
when someone tried to blatantly bluff
[111]
their way through a situation or
[112]
attempted to take credit for someone
[114]
else's work however an amazon employee
[116]
could get chewed out for any number of
[118]
reasons including internal politics or
[121]
simply not having all the right answers
[122]
straight away
[124]
for a man who the atlantic estimates
[125]
would have to spend 28 million dollars a
[128]
day in 2018 just to avoid getting richer
[130]
jeff bezos appears to have a strange
[132]
relationship with charity
[134]
bgr describes how he took to twitter in
[136]
2017 to ask people what he should do to
[138]
be a philanthropist then in a 2018
[140]
interview with matthias doofner he
[142]
states that the only way he can see to
[144]
use his wealth is to spend it on his
[145]
space company blue origin
[148]
out of the four richest americans which
[150]
includes bezos elon musk bill gates and
[152]
mark zuckerberg aol says bezos is the
[154]
most elusive about charity despite being
[157]
number one he's also the only one of the
[159]
four who hasn't signed the giving pledge
[161]
the commitment many of the world's
[162]
wealthiest people make to use the
[163]
majority of their resources for good
[165]
causes in all fairness bezos has made
[168]
some charitable donations over the years
[170]
in 2020 cbs news reports he launched the
[172]
bezos earth fund to help fight climate
[174]
change with a 10 billion dollar gift and
[176]
gave a hundred million dollars to the
[177]
feeding america kovit 19 response fund
[180]
in 2018 he started the day one fund
[183]
which aims to devote two billion dollars
[185]
to address homelessness and education
[186]
issues however vox points out that the
[188]
initiative is uncharacteristically vague
[191]
and potentially ineffective for a bezos
[193]
effort and recode even wondered whether
[195]
the world's richest person would be so
[196]
generous if he wasn't under such intense
[198]
scrutiny even if the day one fund is
[200]
ultimately successful and whatever its
[202]
mission is it's still peanuts compared
[204]
to the 41.3 billion dollars that the
[206]
significantly less wealthy bill gates
[208]
gave in charitable donations between
[210]
2000 and 2016.
[212]
few people like paying taxes but even
[215]
fewer could compare to jeff bezos and
[216]
how frankly he speaks about his hard
[218]
work to dodge them according to fortune
[220]
bezos famously decided to found amazon
[223]
in washington state instead of the hot
[224]
tech hub of california i was perfectly
[227]
happy to admit that he did it to dodge
[228]
california's sales taxes at one point
[231]
bezos even considered planting amazon at
[233]
a native american reservation in
[235]
california where would have been exempt
[236]
from state sales tax
[238]
this was just the beginning of amazon's
[240]
natural aversion to tax paying for the
[242]
next 20 years the company carefully
[244]
avoided sales taxes in the majority of
[246]
other states too this gave it a price
[248]
advantage over traditional book
[249]
retailers and helped it to establish a
[251]
strong foothold in e-commerce as the
[253]
atlantic points out amazon's attitude
[255]
towards taxes hasn't exactly changed
[257]
through the years as a massive economic
[259]
player it's able to parlay governments
[261]
and states for billions and billions of
[263]
tax deductions in 2017 the company made
[266]
5.6 billion dollars in pure profit and
[269]
in 2018 cnbc reported a profit of 11
[272]
billion dollars yet amazon paid no
[274]
federal income taxes whatsoever as a
[277]
major shareholder this policy directly
[279]
benefited bezos who naturally commanded
[281]
a fairly small salary meaning nearly all
[283]
of his income was subject to capital
[284]
gains taxes which maxed out at just 20
[286]
percent instead of the 37 top rate on
[289]
regular income
[291]
in late 2017 amazon announced that it
[293]
wanted to pick a location for its new
[295]
hq2 headquarters and began graciously
[297]
accepting offers from cities all over
[299]
the usa many of the offers were
[301]
ridiculously generous basically a
[303]
competition to see who could give away
[305]
enough freebies to lure amazon in
[307]
mcleans reported that many jumped at the
[309]
chance to get the corporate juggernaut
[311]
in their backyard chicago offered to
[312]
direct 1.32 billion of the income taxes
[315]
paid by amazon workers back to the
[317]
company itself newark's bid included
[319]
over 7 billion dollars in assorted tax
[321]
benefits maryland's package of
[323]
incentives and tax exemptions totaled
[325]
8.5 billion dollars and they even named
[327]
their program promoting extraordinary
[330]
innovation in maryland's economy just to
[332]
shoehorn in the acronym prime
[334]
new york and virginia won the bidding
[336]
war but according to in these times
[338]
everyone involved actually lost saying
[340]
that neither location was likely to
[341]
bring the promised 50 000 jobs and 5
[344]
billion dollars in investment in the
[345]
region in fact in 2019 amazon halted
[348]
their new york plans due to local
[350]
opposition all we asked was that they'd
[352]
be a good neighbor and be part of the
[353]
community and clearly they weren't ready
[355]
to do that
[356]
and while plans are still underway in
[358]
virginia amazon has estimated only
[360]
around 25 000 new jobs over the next
[363]
decade for the new headquarters
[365]
when amazon was starting out many small
[367]
publishers welcomed this new way of
[369]
distribution with open arms
[370]
unfortunately they didn't quite realize
[372]
what they were signing up for the
[374]
everything store reveals that jeff bezos
[376]
doesn't think too highly of the
[377]
publishing business and views the
[379]
industry as a helpless animal just
[380]
waiting for a predator when the smaller
[383]
publishers started becoming more and
[384]
more dependent on amazon for sales the
[386]
company suddenly started playing
[387]
hardball demanding more favorable
[389]
contract terms in ways that the
[391]
everything store calls straight up
[392]
sadistic this treatment was courtesy of
[395]
the former ceo himself as bezos had
[398]
ordered his employees to approach these
[400]
small publishers the way a cheetah would
[402]
pursue a sickly gazelle
[404]
as a result of this mandate some amazon
[406]
executives took such sadistic pleasure
[408]
and abusing publishers that the
[410]
company's lawyers started feeling a
[411]
little worried about the situation
[413]
eventually they stepped in and demanded
[415]
that amazon rename its publisher abusing
[417]
business program from the gazelle
[419]
project to the more corporate friendly
[421]
small publishers negotiation program
[423]
when your lawyers have to calm you down
[425]
you know you've maybe gone too far
[428]
to shape amazon according to his vision
[430]
jeff bezos created the leadership
[432]
principles among other things these 14
[434]
rules required workers to obsess over
[436]
customers accomplish more with less and
[438]
make speedy decisions while maintaining
[440]
quote relentlessly high standards if
[442]
that sounds unrealistic many employees
[444]
have agreed the new york times describes
[446]
how workers toiled over projects without
[448]
sleeping for four days in a row paid
[450]
freelancers in india to help them keep
[452]
up with data entry and spend vacations
[454]
at starbucks using the free wi-fi to get
[456]
work done this sort of ruthless
[458]
corporate culture can lead to health
[459]
issues which the company has been less
[461]
than sympathetic about amazon has
[463]
reportedly cast aside workers who can't
[465]
perform to the company's borderline
[467]
impossible expectations regardless of
[469]
the reason behind their so-called
[470]
incompetence even workers who have
[472]
suffered cancer miscarriages or other
[474]
life-altering personal crises can be
[476]
evaluated unfairly or quote managed out
[480]
the company even gave an insanely hard
[482]
time to the people who could actually
[483]
cope with the pressure
[485]
ex-employee chris brucia tells a story
[487]
about a particularly punishing
[488]
performance review in 2012. his boss
[491]
eviscerated him with a 30 minute lecture
[493]
on all his faults and every goal he had
[495]
failed to meet just when brucia was
[496]
certain his amazon career was at an end
[498]
his boss hugged him and informed him
[500]
that he was in fact being promoted
[503]
jeff bezos was a mighty ceo and is a
[505]
noted tech industry power player but as
[507]
market watch describes there's also a
[509]
whole lot about him that's ripe for
[511]
comparison with a comic book super
[512]
villain apart from having the same
[514]
hairstyle as lex luthor he has money to
[516]
burn and the control of a globally
[518]
influential media institution uh well
[521]
these are these are you know
[524]
sticky balls they're obviously they work
[526]
that's great that's very impressive
[529]
his penchant for developing a fleet for
[530]
space exploration is another take on the
[533]
checklist as is one of his stranger
[534]
vanity projects a 500 foot tall
[537]
thermally powered 10 000 year clock that
[539]
he's embedding in a mountain for reasons
[541]
that remain his own bezos even has the
[544]
melodramatic laugh to go with the
[545]
classic villain image as inc points out
[547]
the billionaire is known for his loud
[549]
honking laughter you generally hear him
[552]
before you see him
[555]
on january 9th 2019 jeff bezos announced
[558]
on twitter that he and his wife of 25
[561]
years mackenzie bezos were divorcing
[564]
[Laughter]
[566]
according to usa today an extramarital
[569]
affair may have something to do with the
[570]
divorce as multiple tabloids claim bezos
[573]
had developed a relationship with former
[574]
tv anchor lauren sanchez some even
[577]
released private photos and messages in
[579]
which bezos was said to flaunt his
[581]
strangely robotic sexting skills
[583]
allegedly writing i love you live girl i
[586]
will show you with my body and my lips
[588]
and my eyes very soon
[590]
bezos divorce announcements strongly
[592]
indicated that the separation was
[594]
amicable and the two exes will remain
[596]
friends in july 2019 a settlement was
[599]
reached with mackenzie receiving 38
[601]
billion dollars over the next two years
[603]
she donated billions to charities across
[605]
a variety of sectors in stark comparison
[607]
to her ex-husband's record of charitable
[609]
giving in 2021 mackenzie married science
[612]
teacher dan jewett in a statement jeff
[614]
bezos wished the newlyweds well saying
[617]
dan is such a great guy
[619]
the warehouse is rarely the most
[621]
luxurious place of employment in any
[623]
company but things are really bad when
[624]
people are peeing in water bottles and
[626]
comparing the work environment to prison
[628]
life in an amazon warehouse involves
[630]
both of those things and many more in
[632]
2016 author james bloodworth went
[634]
undercover in an amazon warehouse to
[636]
research for a book and soon discovered
[638]
that the job was so hectic that he
[640]
didn't have enough time to eat or drink
[642]
properly the atmosphere reminded him of
[644]
prison and the airport style security
[646]
checks and oppressive point-based
[648]
management added to the image some of
[650]
the employees even peed in bottles and
[652]
left them on the shelves because their
[653]
performance targets were so high that
[655]
they didn't have time to take a bathroom
[656]
break while amazon denied many of
[659]
bloodworth's claims and has since
[660]
stopped using the employment agency that
[662]
hired him due to its questionable
[663]
policies other warehouse workers have
[665]
repeated the writer's claims according
[667]
to multiple reports by wired business
[669]
insider the guardian the new york times
[671]
and newsweek warehouse employees still
[673]
urinate in bottles and even trash cans
[676]
due to time constraints i found an empty
[678]
coca-cola bottle with with urine in it
[681]
on the shelf
[682]
the workers also say that many of the
[683]
problems bloodworth reported persist the
[686]
targets are too high surveillance is
[687]
constant the pay is inadequate and
[689]
workplace injuries are depressingly
