5 Things I Wish I Knew About the MCAT - YouTube
Channel: Med School Insiders
[0]
the dreaded mcat is the most important
[2]
test in determining whether or not
[4]
you'll have the opportunity to attend
[5]
medical school and
[6]
become a doctor with this weight comes a
[9]
great deal of myths and misconceptions
[11]
that continue to be perpetuated today
[14]
here's what i wish someone had told me
[15]
about the mcat
[17]
dr jubal med schoolinsiders.com most
[20]
students believe that
[21]
more studying will result in more
[23]
knowledge and therefore
[24]
a better score but that isn't always the
[27]
case
[27]
i've seen countless students plateau
[30]
with their score despite spending
[31]
several additional months dedicated to
[33]
mcat studying
[34]
the reason is that while you can learn
[36]
and retain information at a certain rate
[38]
you'll also forget information at a
[40]
certain rate there are certain tools and
[43]
strategies that you can use to increase
[44]
the rate of learning and decrease the
[46]
rate of forgetting
[47]
but the fact remains that at a certain
[49]
point you will plateau with your score
[51]
it's for this reason that i find the
[53]
best results from my tutoring clients
[55]
when they are able to dedicate a few
[57]
months of full-time
[58]
high-intensity studying to the mcat this
[61]
will maximize information acquisition
[63]
and retention
[64]
and minimize for getting learned
[66]
information in most cases
[68]
three months of high-intensity dedicated
[70]
mcat studying will beat out six months
[73]
of
[73]
medium intensity studying while taking
[75]
other college courses
[77]
in fact i've seen this play out time and
[79]
time again
[80]
certain students will take 6 months 12
[82]
months and
[83]
sometimes even longer preparing for the
[85]
mcat but their score is usually worse
[88]
than those who remained focused
[90]
at high intensity for shorter periods
[92]
there is no
[93]
perfect time to take the mcat but the
[96]
best time for most students is the end
[98]
of summer
[99]
by taking the mcat around september you
[101]
have the entire summer to dedicate fully
[103]
to the test
[104]
this means at least 12 weeks and
[106]
sometimes more
[107]
to throw yourself at mcat prep day in
[110]
and day out
[111]
by eliminating distractions and
[113]
remaining focused this time is often the
[115]
best shot you have
[116]
at achieving your score potential there
[119]
are downsides to this approach
[120]
if you are applying during that medical
[122]
school application cycle
[124]
that begins in june then you'll be far
[126]
behind the curve to be taking your mcat
[128]
in september
[129]
by the time your score is released and
[131]
application is fully processed
[133]
it will be october and you'll be at a
[134]
substantial disadvantage in your medical
[136]
school application
[138]
for this reason taking the mcat at the
[140]
end of summer only makes sense
[142]
if you are applying any future medical
[143]
school application cycle
[145]
for example if you are going to take a
[147]
year off between college and medical
[149]
school
[149]
then you'll need to apply to medical
[151]
school at the end of your senior year
[153]
right as you graduate in this instance
[155]
you may want to take the mcat
[157]
the prior september this will give you
[159]
enough time to also ensure all of your
[161]
prerequisite courses are complete too
[163]
which is helpful for the mcat if you are
[166]
not taking a year off between college
[168]
and medical school
[169]
it's a bit trickier to navigate you'll
[171]
need to apply to medical school at the
[173]
end of your junior year
[174]
during the summer before your senior
[176]
year you should still take the mcat
[178]
the prior september meaning you would be
[180]
studying during the summer after your
[182]
sophomore year
[182]
but this raises a potential issue most
[185]
students will not have taken
[186]
all of their medical school prerequisite
[188]
courses after just
[189]
two years of college i took the mcat at
[192]
this time without having taken
[194]
my biochemistry course and instead
[196]
studied biochemistry from my
[198]
mcat prep materials i ended up scoring
[200]
strongly and
[201]
missing that course didn't hold me back
[203]
however this
[204]
isn't best for everyone and will
[206]
ultimately be a personal decision based
[208]
on two primary factors
[210]
first the subject in question and two
[212]
your strengths and weaknesses
[214]
certain sections like psychology and
[216]
sociology are
[217]
more memorization heavy on the mcat and
[220]
many students are able to self-study
[222]
without taking the corresponding college
[224]
course
[225]
other subjects like physics may be more
[227]
limiting on the mcat without having
[229]
taken the prerequisite classes
[231]
second you need to be honest with
[233]
yourself as to how you self-study
[235]
if you are a stronger student or you
[237]
feel you can learn and
[238]
grasp concepts learning from a textbook
[240]
without an instructor you may not need
[242]
to take the prerequisite course
[244]
but if you are struggling with certain
[245]
subjects or find it difficult to
[247]
self-study
[248]
it may be best to first take the
[249]
corresponding class successfully
[252]
studying for
[252]
and tackling the mcat is one of those
[255]
instances where it pays dividends to
[257]
develop an intelligent plan of attack
[259]
and stick to it worrying about what
[261]
others are doing and deviating from your
[264]
plan
[264]
will more often than not hold you back
[266]
you may be curious how
[268]
your fellow classmate or friend is
[269]
studying which resources are they using
[272]
how many months are they studying for
[274]
how many hours per day
[275]
how many practice tests these are
[277]
important decisions to make
[279]
prior to beginning your mcat prep the
[281]
issue in changing them midway
[283]
is your plan will be compromised as
[285]
you're making adjustments guided by
[287]
emotion and fomo not from a calm place
[290]
of logic and centeredness
[292]
this plays out in several different ways
[294]
one is the student
[296]
who fears they aren't using the latest
[298]
and greatest resource
[299]
and tacks on more resources than they
[301]
can handle getting halfway through a
[303]
dozen resources
[304]
is not going to provide you with a
[306]
better score compared to focusing on
[308]
just a couple that
[309]
are high quality remember you don't have
[311]
to know every single insignificant fact
[313]
to get a top score on the mcat
[315]
part of your score is based on your
[317]
knowledge and part of your score is
[319]
based on your ability to apply knowledge
[321]
and reason your way to the best answer
[323]
choice this leads us to another common
[325]
mistake
[326]
which is focusing too heavily on content
[328]
review and not enough on practice
[330]
questions
[330]
and practice tests i've made a separate
[333]
video on how to best approach practice
[335]
questions and practice tests
[336]
link in the description remember that
[338]
they aren't just a good tool to practice
[340]
test taking strategies
[342]
and application techniques but with
[344]
proper review they are also powerful
[346]
learning tools
[347]
that's right you can learn and
[349]
consolidate important information
[350]
through practice questions
[352]
not just through content review
[353]
resources a big part of sticking to the
[356]
plan
[356]
comes down to accountability it's
[358]
natural to deviate slightly from your
[360]
mcat plan but
[361]
you want to minimize that deviation
[363]
accountability is a powerful tool to
[365]
keep you on track
[367]
if you are studying with your friends
[368]
you can be each other's accountability
[370]
buddies
[371]
i even encourage some friendly
[372]
competition so long as you can
[374]
make sure it's friendly and it serves
[376]
everyone for some
[377]
competition may lead to toxicity
[379]
accountability can also come in the form
[381]
of a tutor who can not only craft a
[384]
custom tailored mcat study plan
[386]
but also hold you accountable to that
[387]
plan and help you overcome any issues or
[390]
challenges with concepts
[391]
test taking strategies and even test
[393]
taking anxiety

[400]
last understand the value of your time
[402]
and the opportunity cost to spending it
[404]
in sub-optimal ways
[406]
i was so obsessed with optimizing my
[408]
time during my mcat prep
[409]
that for the last four weeks leading up
[411]
to my test i went back home to my mom's
[413]
place and studied there
[415]
after all i would save time not having
[417]
to prepare my own food or do my own
[419]
laundry or buy my own groceries
[421]
i could truly dedicate myself fully to
[423]
the mcat day in
[425]
and day out i see students wasting
[427]
precious mcat study time
[428]
in a variety of ways most notably using
[431]
poor study strategies that rely on
[433]
passive techniques
[434]
over far more effective active ones
[437]
reading
[437]
and highlighting in your content review
[439]
book or watching videos passively
[441]
are not good uses of your time it's far
[444]
better to practice
[445]
active learning strategies such as
[447]
spaced repetition with active recall
[449]
practice questions or even synthesis
[451]
questions that i cover
[452]
in my evidence-based study strategy
[454]
video when it comes to space repetition
[456]
with active recall
[458]
the best way to implement this is
[459]
through flashcards but even with
[461]
flashcards
[462]
there's the good bad and the ugly making
[465]
your own flashcards is an active
[467]
learning strategy
[468]
so you will learn by doing so but there
[470]
are three problems with this
[472]
first spending 60 minutes making
[474]
flashcards won't teach you as much as
[476]
going through and studying high quality
[478]
flashcards instead
[479]
second the overwhelming majority of
[482]
students don't make good flashcards
[484]
despite using flashcards for medical
[486]
school and residency
[487]
it was only after continuing to refine
[489]
and practice my own flashcard creation
[491]
strategy in the last couple years
[493]
that i realized where the deficiencies
[495]
were and how subtle and nuanced the best
[497]
flashcards
[498]
are and third to create the best
[500]
flashcards on a given subject you need
[502]
to have mastery of the subject at hand
[504]
you must understand related concepts
[506]
that contrast with the topic
[508]
whether that concept is high medium or
[510]
low yield and how the concept is tested
[512]
on the mcat
[513]
as a pre-med studying for the mcat by
[516]
definition you don't have mastery of the
[518]
subjects
[518]
otherwise you wouldn't be studying for
[520]
the test mem is the answer to these
[522]
problems
[523]
through mem we've developed a better way
[525]
to use flashcards and review sheets to
[527]
accelerate mcat learning
[529]
the average mcat user scores a 514.3 on
[532]
test day which is
[534]
a 90th percentile score and we've had
[536]
countless students write to us who have
[538]
tried alternatives
[539]
like anki but found it clunky and they
[542]
thought flash cards just weren't for
[543]
them
[544]
but once they tried mem things just fell
[546]
into place and their scores started
[548]
improving
[548]
i've linked some interviews with our
[550]
