My name is Lilliana Canedo. I'm a corporate聽vice president with agency in New York City.

I'm originally from Brazil. I graduated in聽
economics and I did a master's in finance too.

I came to the U.S. 13聽years ago, and never went back.

Being here in the U.S and I will need to聽
look for a job, and I'm sending resumes to

companies that was in my area in finance. Nobody considered anything that is studied abroad.

When I got married I was referred to聽
a New York Life agent that set up some life

insurance policies for us. So I was talking to聽him about how I couldn't work and he invited me

to interview. I saw that as my only聽 opportunity and I grabbed that.

After few years being an聽agent I was very successful.

I was learning each day, and I was聽
growing professionally and personally.

I stopped to think how my life changed, and聽I made the decision to look into management

because I felt the obligation to give聽
people the same change that I had.

My favorite moments working as a partner were聽when I saw that the girls that were single mothers,

that were working jobs that were paying them聽very, little they had no flexible time to be

with their kids, we're now becoming professionals聽in the financial service arena and we're making

a life and being successful. You know when I got聽my first year I got four of my girls to become

counsel, which is like you're seeing your聽
kids growing you know going to the university,

and becoming successful. That was for聽
me the most enjoyable moment ever.

I was very successful partner and I saw opening聽to work with the Hispanic market, that always was

my passion, and I decided to apply for that聽as an opportunity of growth. I got the聽聽

position as director, and I started working聽in the home office.

So I have this program that called聽Latino Leaders that we identify Hispanic women聽聽

to work with them to help them transition from聽being successful agents into the management career,
[180]
and make sure they will be very successful聽managers as well. We check their business
[185]
and we add them to the market. The beauty聽of the career with New York Life is that聽聽

you can grow. So if you come as an agent you're聽a successful agent you have the opportunity to

become a manager a partner, a senior part a聽managing partner, or come to the home office

and have a career in the home office, like I聽chose. And here's where they can customize right.

I consider myself pretty successful coming to聽the U.S. barely speaking English, and today being a

corporate vice president of one of the largest聽mutual insurance companies in the world is I

think it's pretty significant. And I always say聽this is not the end, there's still more to come.
