Is Elon Musk Just Trolling Twitter? - YouTube

Channel: America Uncovered

[0]
Elon Musk is now the largest single shareholder of Twitter.
[4]
And it has Twitter divided.
[6]
Is he serious about changing Twitter?
[8]
Or is he just trolling?
[29]
Welcome to America Uncovered.
[30]
I’m Matt Gnaizda, filling in for Chris Chappell, who’s busy arguing with someone on Twitter.
[36]
Speaking of: Twitter is fiercely divided over Elon Musk
 which isn’t new.
[41]
In fact, Twitter being in an uproar and fiercely divided over something is
the entire point
[46]
of Twitter.
[47]
That’s what it’s *for*.
[49]
But this time, Twitter’s uproar over Elon Musk is different.
[53]
It’s an existential crisis for Twitter.
[56]
Last Monday, the world found out that Elon Musk had bought a 9.2% stake in Twitter,
[61]
reportedly paying almost $3 billion for the stock.
[66]
This made him the largest single shareholder of the company
[69]
and sent the company’s stock price soaring.
[72]
Which goes to show how little faith people had in Twitter.
[75]
The guy who came up with the Cybertruck —
[78]
a vehicle that’s in the real world but somehow only 16 bits —
[82]
takes over Twitter, and Wall Street says, “Finally, someone with some good ideas!”
[88]
Last Tuesday, it was announced that Musk would be joining Twitter’s board of directors
[92]
which stirred fears among some Twitter employees
[94]
and led to Musk agreeing to an internal town hall where Twitter employees could ask him
[99]
anything.
[100]
A clear sign that after Elon Musk takes over Twitter, he’s coming for Reddit.
[105]
First Twitter, then Reddit, then Mars!
[108]
“Musk’s appointment to the board was to become official on Saturday pending a background
[112]
check and formal acceptance.”
[114]
Twitter was on edge.
[116]
Everyone was wondering: was Musk going to rename Twitter?
[119]
And given how he names things,
[121]
would we be able to pronounce it?
[124]
On Sunday, Twitter’s CEO dropped another bombshell—Musk had decided *not* to join
[130]
Twitter’s board of directors.
[131]
He said "Elon's appointment to the board was to become officially effective [Saturday],
[136]
but Elon shared that same morning he will no longer be joining the board."
[140]
He didn’t give a reason and Musk also hasn’t said directly why he made the decision.
[145]
Some have speculated he didn’t like what it would entail.
[148]
If he did join the board, “[He] would have been prevented from acquiring more than 14.9%
[152]
of the company.”
[153]
“By reneging on the agreement, Musk is no longer subject to that limit.”
[157]
“[Musk] ‘liked’ a tweet in which a [Twitter] user suggested he backed out of the deal because
[162]
Twitter executives told him to ‘play nice and not speak freely’ on the platform.”Which
[167]
maybe isn’t that surprising given Musk suggested just a few weeks ago that he was giving “serious
[172]
thought” to building a social media company to compete with Twitter:
[176]
I guess he was thinking “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”
[180]
Or maybe he found it easier to do a hostile takeover rather than reform Twitter from within,
[183]
as some have suggested.
[185]
I think the most likely reason is that he felt Twitter wasn’t open to renaming itself
[189]
“Titter.”
[190]
Yes, that was a question Musk actually polled his followers about.
[195]
Notice there isn’t any “no” option.
[198]
Then he promptly deleted the tweet Which is too bad, because at least we can
[201]
all pronounce Titter.
[203]
Unlike his son’s name.
[204]
In any case, the news that Musk wasn’t joining the board caused Twitter’s stock to drop.
[211]
But Elon’s not done with Twitter yet.
[213]
More after the break.
[216]
Welcome back.
[217]
Elon Musk. Some call him Twitter’s most famous troll.
[222]
Others call him the bad guy from the Fifth Element.
[224]
He was Time Magazine’s 2021 person of the year.
[227]
Which isn’t that impressive since I was Time’s person of the year in 2006.
[231]
That’s how it works, right?
[234]
Last year Elon Musk became the richest person in the world, surpassing Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.
[241]
And as Twitter’s most famous troll, he made sure to rub it in Jeff Bezos’s face.
[246]
Musk is famous for his controversial tweets.
[249]
Like the time he said he was “thinking of starting a new university” called “Texas
[253]
Institute of Technology and Science”...
[255]

and that it would have “epic merch.”
[257]
The university never materialized, but that epic merch apparently did
[262]
One time he joked that he was “considering taking Tesla private at $420.”
[267]
That didn’t go down well with the Securities and Exchange Commission, though.
[270]
It sued him for misleading investors.
[273]
He settled the suit by agreeing to step down as Tesla’s chairman for 3 years, pay a $20
[278]
million dollar fine, and have his tweets about Tesla previewed.
[283]
Which upset him
that it wasn’t a $69 million dollar fine, just for the memes.
[289]
Some of his most controversial tweets, however, have been his scathing replies.
[294]
For example, when Senator Elizabeth Warren tweeted “Let’s change the rigged tax code
[299]
so The Person of the Year will actually pay taxes and stop freeloading off everyone else.”
[304]
Musk replied with “Please don’t call the manager on me, Senator Karen.”
[308]
Are we sure that Musk is actually an adult and not
[310]
two 12 year-olds stacked on top of each other in an Elon suit?
[314]
Here’s what he had to say to critics of his behavior on Twitter
[317]
Musk: “Twitter is a war zone.
[319]
If somebody’s going to jump in the war zone, it’s
[321]
like, okay, you’re in the arena.
[323]
Let’s go.”
[324]
So Musk is super active on Twitter.
[326]
Which some say is why he bought so much stock in the first place.
[330]
And now that Musk is not joining the board of directors, there’s a lot of speculation
[334]
over his next move.
[336]
Republicans, free speech advocates, and some Twitter staff have spent the week celebrating
[341]
Musk’s new role at Twitter.
[342]
Many hope that, as a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist,” he will reduce Twitter
[348]
censorship.
[349]
Or even bring Donald Trump back to Twitter.
[351]
Late night talk show hosts are probably also secretly hoping for this, since without Trump
[355]
they’re running out of things to talk about.
[358]
Not everyone who supports the move is on the right, however.
[361]
Bill Maher signaled his support for Musk joining Twitter as well.
[364]
Which doesn’t really come as a surprise given his stance on free speech.
[368]
“This may surprise you but I am not a big fan of Rush Limbaugh.
[372]
However, if you’re one of the people with a website devoted to making him go away, you
[379]
are part of the problem.
[381]
And ironically, you’re not even a proper liberal.
[384]
Because you don’t get free speech.”
[387]
There have been mixed reactions from Twitter employees.
[389]
Some are reportedly calling him “Daddy Elon” — in an endearing way though, not a creepy
[395]
“sugar daddy” way...
[396]
while others are calling him a “racist demagogue.”
[399]
Because it wouldn’t be Twitter if someone wasn’t being called racist.
[402]
Although you gotta be careful calling Elon Musk racist, since he is African American.
[409]
Other employees were afraid of the changes Musk might make to Twitter.
[412]
And they weren’t alone.
[414]
There are plenty of opinion pieces in the media lamenting the move.
[418]
Like this article that argues Elon Musk’s Twitter investment could be bad news for free
[422]
speech.
[423]
They say that because he’s been known for going after his critics on Twitter.
[427]
But if you think about it, that’s *pro-free speech.* He’s using his speech to argue
[432]
with his critics.
[433]
It’s not like he’s trying to get them kicked off Twitter or have them fired from
[436]
their jobs, which is what is really bad for free speech.
[440]
Twitter, meanwhile, tried to reassure people Musk wouldn’t have that much influence over
[444]
Twitter anyway.
[446]
It said “Our policy decisions are not determined by the Board or shareholders, and we have
[450]
no plans to reverse any policy decisions

[452]
Our day to day operations and decisions are made by Twitter management and employees.”
[457]
I’m sure Twitter employees feel better now.
[460]
One article described the mood at Twitter as one of exhausted relief.
[464]
But before Twitter employees let out that sigh of relief, it looks like Elon Musk is
[469]
still interested in adding his own footprint to Twitter.
[472]
After becoming the largest shareholder, Musk polled his followers about changes the company
[476]
could make, like adding an edit button

[479]

or making the algorithm open source

[481]

or allowing payments for Twitter Blue subscriptions in Dogecoin.
[485]
Sadly, he didn’t hint at implementing the actual best way of improving the Twitter experience:
[491]
deleting Twitter.
[493]
But he did hint that he thought Twitter was dying.
[496]
Which is silly to ask, because Twitter has had a longer, slower, and more ridiculous
[501]
death than whatever’s going on here.
[527]
There was another minute of that, but I’m going to spare you.
[531]
Even without being on Twitter’s board, Musk has indicated he still wants a say in how
[535]
Twitter operates.
[536]
He’s also reserved the right to buy a larger stake in Twitter, according to the SEC filing
[541]
he updated this week.
[543]
Part of that SEC filing says that Musk will be having discussions with Twitter’s board
[547]
and management.
[548]
As well as expressing his views about Twitter on social media.
[552]
So does this mean Musk is going to keep pressuring Twitter as an activist investor?
[556]
Or will he give up on changing Twitter and start Twitter 2.0?
[560]
Or Titter 1.0?
[562]
Or will he do a hostile takeover of Twitter?
[565]
Or maybe he’ll forget about Twitter altogether and focus on his other gajillion businesses.
[570]
So what do you think Musk should do?
