Bill Hagerty: 'Infrastructure bill will be devastating to America' - YouTube

[0]
meeting at 11 A.M today to continue work
[2]
on that bipartisan infrastructure bill
[4]
this coming as Democrats push for a
[6]
separate three and a half trillion
[8]
dollar spending Bill my next guest voted
[10]
against the infrastructure proposal
[12]
earlier this week Tennessee Republican
[14]
senator Bill Haggerty joins us now
[16]
Senator thanks for joining us um every
[19]
time I look up there's a I know these
[22]
old Christmas tree or Christmas ornament
[24]
thing that happens down there as these
[27]
bills approach the finish line and
[28]
everyone tries to sneak things in but it
[31]
seems like it's gone from bad to worse
[32]
in just the last 24 hours what do you
[34]
think it's like Groundhog's Day Charles
[36]
I mean they keep saying they've got a
[38]
deal I've been hearing this for weeks
[39]
you get right to the finish line and
[41]
then they don't have one again I do
[42]
think they're close but this has been
[44]
extraordinarily frustrating and it's
[46]
extraordinarily damaging for the economy
[47]
what they're talking about
[49]
uh one of the principal issues seems to
[52]
be how green they can make this deal
[54]
even at the expense of patching roads uh
[58]
I mean it's pretty transparent it's
[60]
pretty obvious do you think your
[61]
colleagues will go well just at some
[63]
point through attrition say okay
[65]
well I don't know what Chuck Schumer's
[67]
ultimate goal is but they've been pretty
[69]
clear they're going to push through this
[70]
3.5 trillion dollar completely partisan
[74]
package it's a tax and spending spree
[75]
and as you say it's the green New Deal
[77]
repackaged and they're going to try to
[78]
put it alongside this so-called
[80]
bipartisan package which you know really
[82]
is just a shield for them and it's
[84]
actually a ploy to say that they've got
[86]
bipartisanship when indeed what they're
[88]
really shoving through is everything
[88]
that people worked hard to negotiate out
[90]
of the bipartisan deal it's not good
[93]
faith it's not compromise and I don't
[94]
see much bipartisanship in this at all
[97]
yeah you uh you you talk about the fits
[100]
and starts and how this has been going
[102]
on for weeks now uh not long ago
[104]
President Biden actually took a Victory
[106]
lap on the bipartisan nature of this
[108]
only to almost immediately say it had to
[111]
coincide with the three and a half
[113]
trillion dollars he's kind of walked
[114]
that back but Nancy Pelosi has not uh
[117]
and and so is this really a bipartisan
[120]
deal is there still being held hostage
[122]
by this to your point this three and a
[124]
half trillion dollar bill I think Nancy
[126]
Pelosi has been very clear she said
[127]
she's not going to even look at the
[129]
so-called bipartisan Bill until she's
[131]
got the 3.5 trillion dollar package
[133]
right in front of her again I've been a
[135]
business person all my life Charles you
[136]
know how you you spend more time
[137]
sometimes negotiating out of a deal you
[139]
know you focus on what isn't in the deal
[141]
maybe sometimes more important than what
[143]
is in it and here we have all of the
[145]
things that were negotiated out the
[146]
green New Deal raising death taxes
[148]
crippling taxes on corporations you know
[150]
killing the fossil fuel industry that's
[152]
what we're going to see in the 3.5
[153]
trillion dollar package it's going to be
[155]
devastating to America
[157]
let's talk about inflation for a moment
[159]
yesterday uh consumer sentiment came in
[162]
significantly below what Wall Street
[164]
anticipated because the inflation rate
[166]
was at a 13-year High
[168]
Democrats consent continuously say that
[173]
this three and a half trillion dollars
[174]
will actually drive inflation down uh
[178]
it's an argument that turns economics
[179]
101 on its head but it isn't it is
[182]
something that putting out there to the
[183]
American public what do you say well I
[186]
think that if you look at the inflation
[187]
that's already embedded in the economy
[189]
Charles just go to the gas pump here in
[190]
Tennessee gasoline prices are up 60 or
[193]
70 percent since Biden took office that
[195]
everything every good that we buy has to
[197]
be transported that's inflationary
[198]
you'll get home prices here in Nashville
[200]
they're up 15 20 percent that means
[202]
rents are up all of this is speeding
[204]
inflation and it's not temporary then
[206]
you talk about the March so-called
[208]
coveted relief package that was 1.9
[210]
trillion you add to this the 1.2
[212]
trillion dollar bipartisan package the
[214]
3.5 trillion that Nancy Pelosi is
[216]
talking about not doing until she gets
[217]
out all you know all put together we're
[220]
looking at perhaps three to four times
[221]
the size of our normal GDP when this all
[223]
gets scored dumped into our economy in
[225]
one year that is inherently inflationary
[228]
I've got a minute to go I know the
[230]
there's a lot of talk about trying to
[232]
maybe extend eviction moratoriums and
[234]
I'm also hearing just some some talk
[236]
also maybe even extending the federal
[238]
unemployment benefits because in the
[239]
rise of the Delta variant are you
[241]
hearing that at all I I've heard about
[243]
it but I'll tell you what I'm hearing
[244]
from employers Charles we've got far
[246]
more job openings here in Tennessee and
[249]
then we have people that are unemployed
[250]
we need to get people back to work and
[252]
what the federal government is doing is
[254]
disincentivizing work our employers are
[256]
competing against the federal government
[257]
it's devastating for the economy it's
[260]
hard on people too people need the the
[262]
pride of work and I think it's really
[263]
unfortunate when you've got the federal
[265]
government cutting the other direction
