Business Name: Choosing a Name for Your Dropshipping Store - YouTube
Channel: Oberlo
[0]
Coming up with a great business name can be
extremely difficult.
[2]
You have to take into account the products
you sell, your audience, and your plans for
[6]
the future â and thatâs if you manage
to find a name thatâs even available.
[7]
Plus, it can be a nightmare to change your
name later down the line.
[10]
So, you need to get it right first time.
[12]
Hey guys, itâs Jessica with Oberlo.
[14]
Today weâre sharing 8 ways to choose the
perfect name for your dropshipping store,
[18]
and 3 mistakes to avoid.
[19]
Business Name Option #1: Use your Own Name
Many iconic brands have been built using the
[26]
founderâs name.
[27]
Some people choose to use their full name,
like Calvin Klein and Daniel Wellington.
[31]
But most founders use only their last name,
like Burberry and Disney.
[35]
Some founders adapt their name slightly, like
Adi Dassler -- the founder of Adidas
[41]
If youâre co-founding a business with others,
you might want to group your names together.
[44]
Warner Brothers did this, founded by brother
Harry, Jack, Sam, and Albert Warner.
[49]
Before you use your own name for your business,
however, think about the implications.
[53]
As the founder, do you plan on being the public
face of the company, like Vaynermediaâs
[57]
Gary Vaynerchuk?
[58]
Or would you prefer to be more personally
anonymous?
[61]
Also, bear in mind that a business named after
you may be more difficult to sell, should
[66]
you wish to do so down the line.
[68]
Business Name Option #2: Name Your Business
After the Problem You Solve, or the Desire
[72]
You Fulfill.
[73]
This is a great way to draw attention to the
benefits of your products.
[77]
For example, the company âFat Blasterâ
is named after the problem they solve.
[82]
Immediately, you know that this business helps
people to lose weight.
[85]
On the other hand, you could name your business
after the desire your product fulfils, like,
[89]
the dating site, Chemistry.com â whose customers
are likely searching for chemistry with a
[94]
special someone.
[95]
Bottom line?
[96]
Every business either solves a problem, or
fulfills a desire.
[98]
Which does yours do?
[99]
And, how you can you incorporate the benefit
you provide into your business name?
[103]
Business Name Option #3: Use Alliteration
This is a simple and effective way to come
[108]
up with a catchy business name.
[109]
Many businesses have used this technique,
like Fitness First, Paramount Pictures, American
[115]
Airways, and Weight Watchers.
[116]
To use alliteration, first, take the industry
youâre in, or the core thing that you provide
[121]
â like, âfitness.â
[122]
Then, add another word beginning with the
same sound, and which adds meaning.
[126]
In this case, putting fitness âfirst.â
[128]
Is there a way you can incorporate alliteration
into your business name?
[131]
Business Name Option #4: Use a Normal Word
This is hard to do well.
[135]
Not only do you have to find a word thatâs
free to useâŠ
[138]
You also have to work hard to âownâ that
word in the mind of your target customers.
[142]
Another thing to bear in mind, is that a single
word can be incredibly difficult to trademark.
[147]
That said, using a single-word business name
can be a powerful way to establish your brand.
[152]
Take business names like Target, Alphabet,
Gap, Apple, Pandora, and Yelp.
[156]
When I say the word âAmazonâ, chances
are, you donât think about the worldâs
[160]
largest river, but the online store.
[161]
Although some of these are just random words,
others have thought behind them.
[165]
Amazonâs founder, Jeff Bezos, cleverly relates
the worldâs largest river, with what he
[170]
hoped would become the worldâs largest store,
selling the most products in the world.
[172]
But, if you canât find a normal word that
works, you can always try...
[176]
Business Name Option #5: Put a Twist on a
Normal Word
[179]
Now itâs time to get really creative.
[181]
If you struggle to find a single word that
represents your business, and is not already
[185]
in use, try changing the word slightly.
[188]
Businesses that did this well include Fiverr,
spelled with two âRâsâŠ
[189]
Toggl with the âEâ dropped from the end
of the wordâŠ
[191]
Xero, spelt with an âXâ instead of a âZâ...
[194]
⊠and âDiggâ spelt with two âGâs.
[196]
On the plus-side, youâre more likely to
find an available domain name using this tactic.
[200]
But, on the down-side, thereâs a chance
people might spell your name wrong, or have
[204]
trouble finding you online.
[206]
Business Name Option #6: Mash Two Words Together.
[209]
This is a popular way of naming a business.
[211]
Simply take two words that represent your
business, and combine them to create a new
[215]
word.
[216]
A good example is âNetflix.â
[217]
âFlickâ is slang for âmovie,â and
âNetâ is short for âInternetâ.
[221]
Flicks on the net.
[222]
Netflix.
[223]
Whatâs more, Netflix also put a twist on
the spelling of âflicksâ, changing it
[226]
from âF-L-I-C-K-S,â to âF-L-I-X.â
[229]
Another example is Microsoft, whose name is
made from the words âmicrocomputerâ and
[233]
âsoftware.â
[234]
Or Groupon, which is made from the words âgroupâ
and âcoupon.â
[237]
Or, take the business name Walmart.
[239]
Founder Sam Walton, took the first part of
his last name âWalâ and combined it with
[243]
mart.
[244]
List out a few words that represent your business,
and see if you can combine any of them in
[248]
a unique way!
[249]
Business Name Option #7: Use an Acronym
Many businessâ choose to shorten a lengthy
[254]
name into just the beginning letter of each
word.
[257]
For example, IKEA created a new word from
an acronym derived from the founder's initials
[261]
and hometown.
[262]
When the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation
wanted to expand internationally, they shortened
[266]
their name to HSBC.
[268]
Kentucky Fried Chicken became KFC, and the
fashion brand ASOS originally stood for âAs
[273]
Seen on Screen.â
[274]
But, acronyms are often difficult to remember,
and they can be difficult for SEO
[278]
So, if you decide to use an acronym, try to
make it short and sweet like KFC, or sound
[283]
like itâs its own word, like IKEA.
[285]
LastlyâŠ
[286]
Business Name Option #8: Use a Business Name
Generator

[296]

dropshipping store!
[301]
This is a great way to find inspiration and
spark ideas â you might just find the perfect
[307]
business name in minutes!
[308]
Okay, that brings us to the end of our 8 ways
you can choose your business name!
[309]
But before we end, letâs touch on 3 common
mistakes to avoid when choosing your name.
[313]
Mistake #1: Not Doing Your Research
Entrepreneur and author of â#GirlBossâ
[317]
Sophia Amoruso, didnât do her due diligence
before starting her clothing line called âNasty
[321]
Gal.â
[322]
And, hereâs the kicker...
[323]
After launching her ecommerce store, she found
out that NastyGal.com was a porn site...
[328]
Eventually she managed to buy the domain for
thousands of dollars.
[331]
The moral of the story?
[333]
Always do your research.
[334]
Is there anyone else out there using the name
youâre considering?
[337]
Are the domains and social network handles
available?
[340]
Will you run into any legal issues?
[342]
Also, check if your name means something different
in another language.
[348]
There was a brand of toilet paper from Sweden
called Krapp - spelt K, R, A, P, P...
[353]
Mistake #2: Not Being Culturally Sensitive
Ask yourself: Would my business name offend
[358]
anyone?
[359]
Avoid names that could be interpreted as mocking
someoneâs race, ethnicity, sexuality, physical
[365]
abilities, and so on.
[366]
Itâs a good business practice, and itâs
just plain respectful.
[369]
Mistake #3: Using More Than Two Words
Long names are hard to remember, and they
[373]
arenât as catchy as short ones.
[374]
In addition, many social media sites restrict
the character count of usernames â for example,
[378]
Twitter only allows usernames of up to 15
characters.
[381]
Keep your name to one or two words.
[383]
If you scroll through the list of Fortune
500 Companies, youâll see that most companies
[387]
stick to this rule.
[388]
And, if youâre struggling to get your message
across in just one or two words, thatâs
[392]
what taglines are for!
[393]
Okay, that brings us to the end of this video!
[396]
Remember, as Gary Vaynerchuk said, âBusiness
names are made.â
[399]
So, whatever name you choose, itâs what
your name comes to represent that really matters.
[404]
You may not come up with the perfect business
name on the first try, but thatâs ok.
[408]
Get creative and brainstorm as many options
as possible!
