i've done numerous informational videos
[2]
about living in tiny homes but i haven't
[4]
done any where i actually interviewed
[5]
somebody that's currently living in a
[7]
tiny home today that's all gonna change
[9]
we're gonna meet with ellen a 67 year
[11]
old woman who took a six thousand dollar
[13]
shed and turned it into a beautiful tiny
[15]
home she's gonna be showing us a full
[16]
tour of her house she's gonna talk about
[18]
the trials and tribulations she had by
[19]
putting it together she's gonna be
[21]
sharing with us what it took to get all
[22]
the utilities out there with the water
[24]
and the electricity and the cable and
[26]
all of that and all the issues that have
[28]
come up since she's owned this tiny home
[30]
since 2016. so let's go ahead and meet
[33]
ellen you're gonna love her hi my name
[35]
is ellen and this is my tiny home my
[38]
story is i was living in austin texas
[40]
for 14 years and i decided to move back
[43]
home and i lived in a 1200 square foot
[46]
condo and was trying to figure out how
[50]
to come back and have an affordable
[53]
living situation so i found out about
[56]
this building that someone owned and
[59]
they were going to turn it into an art
[60]
studio so this house is probably
[64]
eight years old now because i bought it
[66]
i mean the building itself she had
[69]
bought it on a lot that sells outdoor
[72]
buildings that people turn into sheds
[74]
but i made a house out of it i knew she
[76]
wanted to sell it so i decided to buy it
[78]
and move it here to my son's land he was
[81]
letting me live on his property he's in
[83]
california so i bought the house used
[86]
and i basically gutted it out
[89]
from what she had done to make it a home
[91]
and my main focus was
[93]
making it affordable they moved this
[95]
house in april
[96]
because of the
[98]
rain water and then i didn't move into
[99]
november of 2016. oh gotcha it took that
[103]
long with trying to get people to come
[104]
out to work and then the flood had come
[106]
in apr in august
[108]
the one i love sitting on my porch
[113]
i used to have my bike
[114]
it's on my porch but i moved and my
[116]
neighbors are taking care of my bike now
[118]
and i love i bought this at an antique
[121]
shop last year and i love it um in my
[123]
little
[124]
wind chimes this
[125]
this glows at night it's a solar light
[128]
there here's my septic system
[131]
and the other part of my split level ac
[134]
right here before they had a porch that
[136]
wrapped around it went into the house
[139]
and the builders came and
[141]
made the porch across and made a bigger
[143]
living area inside that helped a lot i
[146]
basically just went with an open concept
[149]
living a living area with a bathroom and
[151]
a closet and it's worked out perfect
[154]
because it's nice and roomy it's only
[156]
384 square feet it doesn't feel like i'm
[159]
living in a tiny space as much but the
[162]
main thing i built it for i made the
[164]
build out for like 35 000
[166]
which is what i wanted to put into it
[169]
and so i'm 67 and
[172]
it's like
[173]
i wasn't going to be drowning in debt at
[175]
this age
[177]
now that we've seen the outside we need
[178]
to go inside and she's going to be
[180]
taking us on a full tour but i have to
[182]
know do you think this is a good idea
[184]
for her so far what do you think of her
[185]
little plan that she came with pretty
[187]
smart huh
[188]
okay give us a little tour so here we go
[191]
here's my finished product
[193]
so yeah basically the cabinets were
[196]
already here she had had put bought
[198]
these at lowe's
[200]
and i just used them and put a
[202]
countertop on it i bought the stove in
[204]
the refrigerator which is a nice size
[207]
and i added this island
[209]
and i bought that little cabinet for a
[212]
pantry
[213]
i've added this everything's for storage
[216]
i've after sitting there talking to
[218]
ellen for all that time on the back
[219]
porch and she brought me in the house my
[221]
mind just kept thinking how in the world
[223]
does she know what to do how did she
[225]
know how to turn this shed
[227]
into an actual house it takes a lot of
[230]
research that most people do beforehand
[233]
and what her answer was was absolutely
[235]
amazing to me i didn't know anything to
[237]
do
[238]
my
[239]
my family helped me a lot my brother had
[242]
a business dealing with
[244]
contractors and stuff and he restores
[246]
homes and elevates homes from floods and
[250]
he moved this building for me
[253]
and
[254]
i just asked a lot of questions
[257]
i'm really
[258]
just fortunate i moved this when i did
[261]
i'm so happy i did it that was tough my
[263]
brother did help a lot because he knew a
[265]
lot more than i did i knew nothing
[267]
about any of this
[269]
until i just jumped into it
[272]
going through ellen's house i was
[273]
shocked on how much room she actually
[274]
had wait until you see how big the
[276]
bathroom is in her closet space but i
[278]
was really curious about the sleeping
[281]
arrangements i basically slept on my
[283]
couch for the first three years i've
[285]
been here five years
[287]
i moved in 2015 at the end of the year
[290]
this house was moved in april
[293]
of 2016. so now i sleep up in my loft
[297]
and
[299]
i have a nice sized
[301]
bathroom here
[304]
that's great um it's a full-size bath
[307]
and bathtub you have a bathtub yes i
[310]
have a bathtub
[311]
it's my bathtub it's
[313]
just a basic the tub was already here
[315]
and so was the toilet i used everything
[317]
that i could use that she had
[320]
and
[320]
for price wise i just
[323]
wanted it to be economical and
[326]
it was i wasn't looking into
[328]
spending so much
[330]
now let's get into the nitty-gritty how
[332]
much does all of this stuff cost when
[334]
you get a water well and you get
[335]
electricity and you get gas how much did
[338]
that actually cost her in her budget it
[341]
was about 6 000 back then for the
[344]
water well and
[345]
it's a deep well
[347]
and the septic system utilities
[351]
didn't
[352]
because they come to the line yes there
[354]
was already a yeah it wasn't raw land
[356]
there was already um
[358]
there was already lines coming well i
[359]
had get a temporary pole put up
[363]
for construction and then they tied it
[364]
in
[365]
dixie electric tied it in later that
[368]
part wasn't
[369]
wasn't too bad and see i would have
[371]
loved gas but i would have had to pipe
[373]
it from the front it would cost me
[374]
probably over a thousand dollars and so
[376]
i just i'm all electric here
[379]
but my electric bill is hardly nothing
[381]
and i also have a tankless hot water
[382]
heater it's
[384]
little it fits on my wall under here
[387]
if you can get a picture
[389]
it's so compact
[391]
i'm never without hot water at all no
[394]
matter what how deep i
[396]
fill up my tub
[400]
it got clogged with some stuff at once
[402]
and my son fixed it but
[405]
even to replace it it's not that bad
[407]
did the parish give you any trouble
[408]
about putting in the house
[411]
they
[412]
did at first because it wasn't up to
[414]
code i had to really rip out everything
[416]
and bring it up to their standards the
[419]
permits were kind of tough but nothing
[421]
like now
[422]
it was just you had to have a permit
[424]
get the house up to certain code didn't
[427]
have to have a permit to move it here it
[429]
wasn't that big
[431]
i had to get licensed contractors and
[433]
things like that and then when it was
[435]
finished i had to inspect it and so the
[437]
parish came through
[438]
yes
[439]
and then wrote a completion
[441]
certificate for me so i could possibly
[444]
get insurance or whatever
[446]
one of the downfalls is in bad weather i
[449]
don't like staying here
[451]
i'm getting a lot braver but
[453]
if it's really bad weather i leave of
[455]
course one of the biggest questions that
[457]
comes up when it comes to tiny homes on
[459]
my channel is about the insurance many
[461]
people have expressed how hard it was
[463]
for them to find insurance for their
[465]
tiny home even a couple i interviewed
[467]
about six months ago they had a hard
[469]
time finding insurance but they did find
[470]
it and it was quite expensive so this is
[472]
what ellen had to say about insuring her
[474]
tiny home yes i could not get insurance
[477]
at all the first three years
[480]
because they
[481]
they didn't insure tiny homes in
[483]
louisiana
[485]
and
[486]
i kept getting in touch with this guy
[487]
that was insuring them all over and he
[489]
said soon
[491]
you know we'll we'll get it and finally
[493]
i did i did get some
[495]
but of course they don't cover anything
[497]
to do with hurricane
[499]
because we're close to the coast
[501]
it's a tiny home and my house is tied
[503]
down and
[504]
my house is set on five or six one two
[507]
three five footings of concrete instead
[511]
of a whole slab with house pillars which
[514]
i totally recommend also i feel like
[516]
it's a lot more sturdy
[518]
and it's tied down into the concrete i
[521]
don't have flood insurance i
[524]
would probably never flood
[526]
this whole land had water on it but i
[528]
had only a couple inches
[530]
under my house i'm i'm good
[532]
i don't need flood insurance
[534]
now you know if the house the roof came
[537]
off it would be
[539]
probably covered unless it's hurricane
[541]
i'd like to get that inspected and
[543]
possibly i mean it's fine right now but
[547]
i don't metal roof right it's a metal
[548]
roof i love it i mean when he's washing
[552]
it's held up great
[553]
even during the hurricane everything i
[555]
didn't have but
[556]
water came through my front door had i
[559]
you know barricaded it better
[561]
it wouldn't even even done that so it's
[563]
a very minor
[564]
damage actually but
[567]
nothing else
[568]
happened no leaks anything well if
[570]
anybody would
[572]
know any other insurance in louisiana
[574]
that would insure tiny homes i don't
[576]
know of any
[578]
i would like to know i mean i've checked
[579]
in in mo home
[581]
i've checked into this being a little
[583]
building
[584]
out i was thinking of even dropping it
[587]
but
[588]
just like any home doesn't matter if
[589]
it's a tiny home manufactured home a
[591]
regular stick built home you're going to
[593]
have maintenance issues that come up
[595]
ellen explains what issues she's had
[597]
with her tiny home especially since it
[599]
is a shed and it wasn't necessarily
[601]
designed for long-term living use the
[604]
things that are happening to her home
[605]
may not be typical for a traditional
[608]
type of home and maybe some of you in
[609]
the audience could help her with some of
[611]
her issues i know that she'd be really
[612]
grateful for some of your answers yes my
[615]
paint i thought i had a really good
[616]
paint
[618]
priming everything i bought my paint
[621]
from a reputable paint company and now
[623]
it's already peeling which i guess is
[625]
not too bad
[627]
it is peeling like this all the way
[629]
around that's why i'm thinking i need to
[632]
cover it
[634]
or maybe rip that up and put
[636]
aluminum siding or vinyl siding
[639]
or just corrugated
[643]
aluminum
[644]
it's made to look
[646]
really good on some of these homes so
[648]
i'm just doing research right now
[650]
thinking about adding little humidifiers
[652]
dehumidifiers in my house just the small
[654]
ones
[655]
because it's a closed area and i don't
[658]
have a lot of ventilation but
[661]
that's something i'm gonna look into
[663]
it won't cost much
[664]
now she mentioned about the humidifiers
[667]
and i actually have the answer for her
[669]
so this is a surprise for you ellen look
[671]
right here you can get them on amazon i
[674]
have them in my bathrooms because the
[675]
ventilation fan in my bathrooms isn't
[678]
quite good enough and they work
[679]
fantastic and you can dump them out
[681]
about once a week they're perfect here
[683]
in the state of louisiana because as you
[685]
know the state of louisiana has a lot of
[686]
humidity so those dehumidifiers they
[688]
work fantastic that's for you ellen
[691]
and anybody else that has a small
[692]
bathroom the other issue about the
[694]
termites i do not have the answer for
[697]
when it comes to killing termites
[699]
naturally yes i hated to put that poison
[702]
um i haven't treated it for termite yet
[705]
so
[706]
i don't think i have any damage but it's
[708]
something i need to look into
[710]
is inspecting for termites and treating
[713]
that
[714]
so
[715]
naturally i'd like to do more natural
[717]
we'll see
[718]
we'll see
[720]
so yeah so i'm asking you as an audience
[723]
if you know anything that would kill
[725]
termites naturally or at least prevent
[727]
them naturally with not a lot of harsh
[729]
chemicals could you please put them in
[730]
the comments section ellen would be
[732]
greatly appreciative and she said that
[733]
she would be reading the comments below
[735]
you have good storage
[737]
yes
[738]
yes and i've added a lot of things i can
[739]
think of i'm always purging
[742]
so i've got a dresser here all my
[744]
clothes in here
[745]
my washer and dryer i love it
[747]
it's full full size
[750]
got this cabin i've got these
[752]
so i'm how much was that washer and
[754]
dryer do you know it was like 1100.
[756]
that's not bad but
[758]
it's perfect
[759]
i don't want it ever to go out
[762]
it's perfect
[763]
um
[764]
because it works great but yeah and i've
[766]
got a lot nice loft up there
[769]
and it stores all of my stuff is here
[772]
everything i own is here yeah it's pros
[774]
and cons because now i don't spend much
[776]
money on buying things
[778]
and i haven't decorated really that much
[781]
because i don't have that much room
[783]
and but sometimes i'll see something
[785]
like oh if i just had a little more room
[788]
but you really don't miss it it's i
[791]
don't just every once in a while just
[793]
have a little inkling i'm like oh i
[794]
can't get that anyway i don't have i
[797]
don't have the room for it so other than
[798]
her having like the best storage for a
[801]
tiny home i've probably ever seen the
[803]
second thing i was super impressed with
[805]
was her kitchen you only got a taste of
[807]
it at the beginning so let me finish
[808]
showing you what she's actually done and
[811]
that's what i wanted i didn't want any
[813]
excess and i'm a minimalist
[815]
and i mean my kitchen all my dishes are
[818]
up here
[819]
which is perfect i don't even need
[822]
half of those i can store things under
[824]
here i've got a lot of my other pots and
[826]
stuff some pots in there full-size stove
[830]
and oven
[832]
and before
[834]
when the porch was not
[836]
fully out
[838]
they had like a wall here my my oven
[840]
wouldn't have even opened really it was
[842]
so small so i mean it was perfect that i
[845]
let that out
[847]
to add more
[849]
living space it it was the best thing i
[850]
did like i say i'm always looking for
[853]
new
[854]
new things to put things in and purging
[857]
all the time
[858]
so i learned i learned quickly you have
[860]
guts
[862]
yes i mean i i cried a lot it was a lot
[864]
of sweat and tears but
[867]
but a lot of help from my family and i
[869]
asked a lot of questions i do wish i
[872]
would have
[874]
researched it more but i didn't have a
[875]
lot of time i don't like clutter at all
[877]
and it helps me to not be a hoarder
[881]
and keep things neat yeah it's perfect
[883]
it's perfect i have to tell you i think
[886]
that ellen is probably one of the
[887]
coolest bravest most ingenious
[890]
retired women i have ever met my whole
[892]
entire life how many people do you know
[894]
that would take on a project like this
[895]
not knowing a thing about it at this age
[897]
i know my parents wouldn't do it but
[899]
after seeing what she did i know i could
[901]
do it let me know in the comment section
[903]
if it's something that you could do to
[905]
watch some more videos about tiny homes
