[6]
To meet the world’s growing energy demands, bringing new supply sources to market is critical.
[14]
Gas resources are plentiful...
[17]
...and geographically diverse.
[20]
Globally we see strong demand for natural gas...
[23]
...the cleanest burning fossil fuel.
[27]
Shell is a leading company in liquefied natural gas...
[32]
LNG
[33]
...and gas-to-liquids.
[35]
GTL
[37]
Let’s look at GTL.
[39]
GTL creates an additional route to monetise a country’s resources of natural gas...
[45]
...by turning them into high quality liquid fuels and products.
[49]
It offers a way to access the international oil products market, which is vast and global.
[55]
This is attractive when gas markets are remote, and when gas resource holders want to diversify risk.
[63]
We believe that combining a partner’s local expertise and know-how with Shell’s global reach...
[69]
...leading technology and project delivery experience can be synergetic.
[75]
GTL is the umbrella term for the technology that is used to produce a suite of synthetic hydrocarbon liquids...
[82]
...through the Fischer-Tropsch process.
[84]
At the heart of Shell’s GTL Technology is the proprietary Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis process.
[93]
The GTL process consists of three stages:
[98]
In the first stage, natural gas is partially oxidised to create a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide...
[105]
...which is then known as synthesis gas, or syngas
[109]
Impurities are removed from the syngas.
[115]
The second stage converts the synthesis gas into liquid hydrocarbons using a catalyst.
[121]
In this stage, a liquid is formed which looks and feels like wax at room temperature.
[135]
The final stage is cracking and isomerisation, which ‘cuts’ the molecule chains into shorter lengths.
[143]
This yields high quality liquids such as diesel...
[147]
...kerosene...
[148]
...and lubricant oil.
[153]
GTL products are colourless, odourless liquid hydrocarbons of very high quality...
[159]
...that have very low levels of impurities like sulphur, aromatics and nitrogen.
[166]
GTL products include:
[168]
GTL naphtha...
[170]
...which is used as a feedstock for chemical plants to produce building blocks for the plastics industry.
[176]
GTL kerosene...
[178]
...which can be blended with aircraft fuel or used for heating and lighting.
[183]
GTL normal paraffin...
[186]
...a premium feedstock for detergent production.
[189]
GTL gasoil...
[191]
...which is an alternative diesel fuel.
[194]
GTL base oil...
[196]
...a high quality base material for finished lubricants in engines...
[203]
...and GTL wax...
[205]
...which is a high quality product used in applications ranging from adhesives...
[210]
...to printing inks, candles, construction and food packaging materials.
[217]
Shell’s involvement with gas-to-liquids has been a 40 year journey of technology and product innovation.
[225]
Shell has been active in Malaysia since 1891...
[229]
...and opened the world’s first commercial GTL plant in Bintulu in 1993.
[236]
We operate this plant on behalf of the Joint Venture with PETRONAS...
[240]
...Mitsubishi and the Sarawak state.
[243]
Almost all of the staff and marketers at our Bintulu facility are Malaysian.
[249]
We work in close partnership with Qatar Petroleum in the Pearl GTL plant...
[254]
...which ramped up to full production at the end of 2012 and is the largest GTL plant in the world.
[260]
Shell continues to improve its GTL technology...
[264]
...enhancing design...
[266]
...adding new GTL products...
[268]
...and optimising the process...
[270]
...including research work in the Netherlands, Germany, Qatar and Malaysia.
[276]
Recognising that there is a demand in the market for smaller GTL facilities...
[281]
...between the size of our Bintulu plant and Pearl GTL...
[285]
...Shell has developed a GTL technology concept that could allow considerable flexibility in capacity.
[292]
It builds on Shell’s proven GTL capability and leadership.
[297]
Shell has a proven track record of GTL commercial performance and innovation...
[303]
...in close cooperation with host governments and partners.
[307]
With recent advances unlocking vast new supplies of natural gas across the globe...
[312]
...we see more opportunities for GTL to help a country to boost its economy...
[317]
...by building up local gas based industry.
