[17]
conservative groups that were improperly
[19]
targeted by the irs are going to court
[22]
against the government this is the
[25]
citizenlink report i'm stuart shepard
[27]
along with bruce house connect who
[28]
follows the courts for us hi bruce hi
[30]
stuart what's coming out of the hearing
[32]
so far should have every american
[35]
sitting on the edge of their seat
[36]
concerned about what's happening in
[37]
washington yeah this is an agency of the
[40]
executive branch of government that has
[41]
run amok
[42]
we have found out since
[45]
earlier this year that
[47]
over 300 conservative groups
[50]
have been essentially slow walked
[52]
through the irs application process for
[54]
tax exemption
[56]
the irs has been audited by its own
[59]
inspector general uh that works for the
[61]
treasury department and what he has
[63]
found and has what he has reported
[66]
through his audit and through testimony
[68]
is that this is an unprecedented action
[71]
by the irs against conservative groups
[74]
he says he hasn't seen anything like
[75]
this since the nixon era now one
[77]
interesting aspect of this which you've
[78]
been pointing out is the groups were not
[81]
denied their status
[83]
they were just slowed down tell us why
[85]
that's important well if someone had
[87]
been rejected
[89]
they
[90]
they would have a reason to sue the the
[92]
rejected parties but of the 300
[95]
approximately 300 organization
[98]
applications that he audited
[101]
he said
[102]
that
[104]
108 had been approved
[106]
and that 28 were withdrawn mostly
[109]
because they were tired of going through
[110]
the process and that left 160
[113]
applications open none had been denied
[116]
because once you deny something you give
[118]
someone a cause of action to file a
[119]
complaint go to congress
[122]
and cause a ruckus something that will
[123]
show up something that might make it
[125]
into the papers that's right now if you
[127]
keep promising that you can get your tax
[129]
exemption if you give us 1200 more
[132]
documents or promise
[134]
this
[135]
then we'll look at it so here fill out
[136]
another form send it to us and we'll get
[138]
back to you and part of the reason this
[140]
worked i think is because most
[143]
non-profit groups don't want to put in
[144]
their newsletter don't want to send out
[146]
to the folks who follow them hey we're
[148]
being audited hey we're trying to get
[150]
our tax exempt status but it's dragging
[152]
on and on because it it gives the
[154]
impression that you might be doing
[156]
something wrong
[157]
now we've seen an interesting dynamic
[160]
groups all over coming out saying hey
[162]
look we're on the list too and now it's
[164]
actually become in a weird sense a bit
[166]
of a positive for non-profits well
[168]
that's that is true and once you realize
[171]
that you're part of a larger group that
[172]
is being targeted by the federal
[174]
government there is this sort of coming
[176]
together and that's what essentially
[178]
caused the tea party movement to come up
[180]
to you know prominence in 2010 anyway
[182]
and that's what most of these groups are
[184]
one of the groups that has been getting
[186]
some attention is called true the vote
[188]
they started in houston texas but then
[190]
became more of a national movement they
[192]
have a very simple goal in mind they
[194]
just want to make sure that when people
[195]
vote they're actually citizens actually
[197]
have a pulse actually that the address
[200]
they put on the registration is a house
[202]
not a vacant lot you know that sort of
[204]
thing well katherine engelbreit who's
[206]
the president and founder of that
[208]
organization says the 2012 election was
[210]
an eye-opening experience
[212]
it was really the first time that we
[214]
took the national stage in politics and
[216]
our goal was to make an impact on the
[219]
debate of an election that would go on
[222]
to become one of the most expensive and
[224]
most polarizing that we've had in the
[225]
history of our country
[228]
it was amazing to see how quickly this
[232]
organic movement spread as our effort
[235]
grew and our research made national
[237]
headlines it was encouraging to see that
[239]
the country was on our side
[242]
now
[242]
with november behind us
[245]
what we are seeing is that the effort to
[248]
derail citizen engagement is more
[250]
organized than it has ever been now it's
[253]
worth pointing out that not only was her
[254]
organization hit with an audit but she
[257]
personally was as well yes that's right
[259]
she and her husband own a business
[261]
and it manufactures things and suddenly
[264]
besides the trouble with the irs she was
[267]
getting phone calls from the fbi they
[269]
had an investigation going on one of her
[271]
employees
[272]
and then osha showed up wanted to uh
[274]
investigate whether her
[276]
facilities were safe and gave her a huge
[278]
fine to some twenty five thousand
[280]
dollars
[281]
who else showed up um the texas version
[284]
of the environmental protection agency
[286]
showed up and and said hey you're not in
[288]
compliance you need to spend another
[289]
forty thousand dollars building some
[291]
storage sheds for your for your process
[293]
so she had the full weight of government
[295]
come down on her in the two years
[297]
following coincidentally it just all
[299]
sort of happened in that window of time
[301]
you know i can see lightning hitting
[303]
hitting a house once but hitting the
[305]
house five times
[307]
for five different storms in the same
[308]
two-year period no that doesn't happen
[310]
and as we mentioned the organization was
[312]
audited their business was audited i
[314]
mean the irs showed up on their doorstep
[316]
as well that's kind of a rough year for
[318]
anybody and but that's apparently been
[321]
echoed over and over again around the
[322]
country now one interesting aspect of
[324]
this the articles i've been reading in
[326]
the mainstream media i've been reading
[327]
more than i ought to well go so far as
[329]
to say well the actions of the irs to
[331]
slow down the process of getting your
[333]
proper non-profit status work to
[336]
hurt these groups as far as raising
[338]
money but they kind of stopped there but
[340]
but the real impact of this was all
[342]
about the 2012 election it had to do
[345]
with keeping conservative voices out of
[348]
the conversation during an election
[349]
season well yes and it even goes back to
[352]
the 2010 uh interim elections too
[355]
because a lot of these tea party groups
[357]
came
[358]
to being in that year prior to the 2010
[361]
elections which proved to be a big sweep
[363]
of congress for republican candidates so
[366]
yes it has definitely impacted the
[368]
election process let's talk a bit about
[370]
the breadth of the groups that have been
[372]
hit by this
[373]
many now as we just have talked about a
[375]
couple of minutes ago are coming forward
[377]
saying we were hit too we were hit too i
[379]
know since since this came to light
[381]
we've
[383]
heard from billy graham evangelistic
[385]
association and franklin graham's
[387]
organization samaritan's purse
[389]
and another newspaper in north carolina
[391]
called the biblical recorder that's been
[393]
around for 133 years
[395]
those organizations were audited for the
[397]
very first time by the irs following
[400]
some ads that they ran in the newspaper
[402]
supporting north carolina's marriage
[404]
amendment that was approved by the
[405]
voters a year ago and
[409]
it's just amazing that the coincidence
[411]
of a three-organization audit would
[413]
happen just following
[416]
some newspaper ads that those
[417]
organizations put in the paper saying
[419]
vote your values and we can't say too
[421]
many times only conservative
[425]
organizations were hit
[427]
liberal groups appeared to have a quick
[430]
path through the irs and got all the
[432]
paperwork done and were out there doing
[434]
probably far more political activity
[436]
than they should be doing under their
[437]
non-profit status meanwhile conservative
[439]
groups are being hit over and over again
[441]
and by that ask yourself this do you
[443]
believe that marriage is the union of a
[444]
man and a woman do you believe that life
[447]
is sacred and that babies in the womb
[449]
should be protected do you believe in
[452]
all the things that conservativism
[453]
stands for in the broader sense
[455]
including the that we should be a nation
[456]
founded upon the constitution a lot of
[459]
folks support gun rights and are very
[462]
active on on that particular issue those
[465]
are the groups that were targeted
[467]
exclusively right in fact there's a
[470]
there's a story being reported out there
[472]
that obama's half-brother president
[474]
obama's half-brother from kenya
[476]
filed an application for a 501c3
[478]
tax-exempt foundation
[480]
his uh application was approved in one
[484]
month
[485]
and it was backdated two and a half
[487]
years so that donors to his foundation
[489]
could get
[491]
a tax exempt
[492]
uh receipt
[494]
going back two and a half years which i
[495]
understand exceeds the power of the eye
[497]
of the irs to even grant yeah so yes
[500]
what needs to happen
[502]
well there's a new commissioner uh danny
[505]
werfel is is the new irs commissioner
[508]
who acting commissioner acting
[509]
commissioner appointed after uh doug
[512]
shulman resigned
[514]
and uh he has promised to get to the
[516]
bottom of this he he is not with the irs
[520]
previous to this so
[521]
hopefully his promise to clean up the
[524]
irs
[525]
bring it to light find out who is
[527]
violating the law because it appears
[529]
some federal laws have been violated
[532]
fire people we need to find out who's
[534]
broken the laws and send some send a few
[536]
people to jail over this thing it's that
[538]
serious all right bruce thank you for
[540]
your insights appreciate it sure and we
[542]

here we encourage you to pray for the
[559]

[561]
these hearings that are going on pray
[563]
that they would have the ability to ask
[564]
the insightful question the incisive
[567]
question that will help cut to the heart
[568]
of this so that we can get some truth
[570]
about what actually went on and what
[572]
needs to happen next and remember stand
[575]
tall and be heard
[595]
you
