Planet Gemini PDA Hands-On: The Dream Of The 90s Is Alive - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
back in the 1990's when cell phones and
[3]
pdas were still separate things over a
[5]
million people bought something called
[7]
the Scion a durable clamshell organizer
[10]
with reliable software and a large
[13]
keyboard 20 years later the scions
[16]
spiritual successor has finally arrived
[20]
from CES 2018 in Las Vegas I'm mister
[23]
mobile with a first look at the Gemini
[25]
from Planet computers
[32]
yeah but what is it that's the number
[36]
one question I overheard during my brief
[38]
time with the Gemini on the show floor
[39]
and you know it's an understandable one
[41]
this thing isn't much bigger than a
[44]
large smartphone some versions of it
[46]
have 4G built in and you can even make
[48]
calls on it and yet it's not intended to
[52]
be a smart phone replacement Planet says
[56]
the Gemini was built to be a tool for
[57]
creators bloggers social media mavens
[61]
people whose work days are measured in
[63]
emails per hour and the core feature for
[66]
that audience is of course the physical
[68]
keyboard while it's usable as a thumb
[71]
board it's really meant for a tabletop
[72]
and making that possible is an ingenious
[75]
folding metal extension that slides out
[77]
from the hinge when open keeping it
[80]
balanced while you're clacking away much
[83]
like a blackberry there are function
[85]
shortcuts mapped to some of the keys
[86]
that let you change the screen
[88]
brightness or adjust the volume or call
[92]
up the emoji panel some of the software
[95]
like the agenda was heavily inspired by
[98]
the scion of the nineties where the old
[101]
Scion had a row of physical buttons for
[103]
shortcuts the Gemini uses a popover
[105]
panel in software that you can customize
[107]
yourself if you want more real estate
[111]
than the six inch display gives you you
[113]
can pick up an HDMI adapter to plug into
[115]
a bigger monitor through one of the USB
[117]
C ports and if you need a little more
[119]
precision than the touchscreen offers
[121]
you can pair a bluetooth mouse as well
[124]
while there's no external display there
[127]
is an LED strip that's programmable so
[130]
you can set color sequences for specific
[132]
alerts like email or reminders or phone
[135]
calls those phone calls are pretty neat
[137]
since the two ports on the front are
[139]
both speaker and microphone so there is
[143]
no upside down or right setup you just
[145]
hold it to your head and talk if video
[148]
calls are more your speed there's a five
[150]
megapixel front-facing webcam and your
[152]
choice of side firing loudspeakers or a
[154]
headphone jack
[156]
and if Android isn't enough to sate your
[159]
mobile computing needs you do have the
[161]
option to boot into Linux as well
[165]
as excited as I am about the gem and I
[168]
bring him back the dream of the 90s I do
[171]
have a couple concerns for one thing
[174]
it's running last year's Android nougat
[176]
apparently because Oreo support has yet
[178]
to arrive for the mediatek chipset this
[181]
thing is built on also I wasn't really
[185]
encouraged by my first few minutes with
[187]
the keyboard first off there's no
[189]
backlight which is a big downer and
[192]
secondly I felt like the keys were on
[194]
the mushy side I had to really punch
[197]
down on some of them to get keystrokes
[199]
to register now remember I'm at CES and
[203]
this was a pre-production model pulled
[205]
off the assembly line days ago I'll need
[208]
a full review out in the real world with
[210]
a retail model to evaluate it properly
[213]
the planet Gemini is the product of an
[215]
IndieGoGo campaign that's still rolling
[218]
on buyers have their option of Wi-Fi
[220]
only and cellular models the latter of
[222]
which is compatible with both GSM and
[224]
CDMA networks
[226]
yay for Verizon and Sprint at press time
[229]
the Wi-Fi model is available for $299
[232]
the 4G version is 399 and a variety of
[235]
accessories are on offer including an
[237]
external camera for an extra 49 bucks
[240]
I'll drop the link to the campaign in
[242]
the description below those who backed
[245]

[247]

[248]
