How I Got a 770 Score on the GMAT - YouTube

Channel: Magoosh GMAT

[0]
hi i'm erica i spend most of my time working聽 as the sat act senior curriculum manager here聽聽
[5]
at magoosh but i'm also a gre gmat聽 expert with 99th percentile scores聽聽
[10]
years of experience teaching and tutoring and some聽 youtube videos that you may very well have seen聽聽
[15]
in today's video i'm going to talk about how i got聽 a 770 on the gmat the first and only time i took聽聽
[21]
it now your gmat study experience may not look聽 exactly like mine more on that later in this video聽聽
[28]
but these are strategies that anyone can apply to聽 get a top score so the first thing that i did to聽聽
[32]
get a 770 on the gmat was to really understand聽 how the test is designed and scored now it may聽聽
[38]
surprise some of you to know but your score on the聽 gmat isn't so much a measure of how many questions聽聽
[43]
you miss on test day but more a measure of the聽 difficulty of the questions you miss on test day聽聽
[48]
and specifically your score is meant to represent聽 the difficulty at which you are missing 50 percent聽聽
[54]
of the questions you see and getting the other 50聽 right and the way that the test does this is that聽聽
[60]
the algorithm will keep feeding you harder and聽 harder questions until you're missing half of them聽聽
[67]
and if you're missing more than half it'll lower聽 the difficulty but the big takeaway is is that聽聽
[72]
you are supposed to miss questions the test is聽 designed to push you until you do now true at the聽聽
[79]
99th percentile the test is starting to run out of聽 questions so you're probably not going to miss 50聽聽
[85]
of the questions that you see on test day if you聽 are in the very tippy-tippy top of test scores聽聽
[91]
but perfection is not required for a perfect score聽 you can still miss questions as long as they're聽聽
[99]
at a very high difficulty level so i know that i聽 missed questions on test day and i intentionally聽聽
[106]
missed questions on test day in order to keep the聽 pace so rather than agonizing over a problem that聽聽
[112]
i wasn't gonna get right anyway and then messing聽 myself up for time later i accepted that i was聽聽
[117]
gonna miss the question and moved on because i聽 knew i didn't need to get it right to get the聽聽
[122]
score i wanted little side note gmat scoring is聽 deeply misunderstood especially when it comes to聽聽
[128]
section scoring which is super different between聽 quant and verbal so let me know in the comments if聽聽
[132]
you'd like a video specifically on that subject聽 the second thing i did to get a 770 on the gmat聽聽
[137]
was to know where to focus my study now again聽 you can miss questions and get a high score on聽聽
[143]
the gmat and i did but those questions were at聽 a particularly high difficulty level if you're聽聽
[149]
missing questions at a lower difficulty level you聽 run the risk of the algorithm artificially setting聽聽
[154]
your level lower to match those questions so even聽 if you can get questions in the high 700s right聽聽
[160]
you won't get the opportunity to because the test聽 won't show them to you so what i did to counter聽聽
[165]
that was to focus on the easiest questions i was聽 missing so anything that i was missing in the 500s聽聽
[171]
or the 600s were the things that got my attention聽 and i prioritized those over the questions in the聽聽
[177]
700s because i knew that those were ones i was聽 allowed to miss now if you're aiming for a score聽聽
[181]
in the high 700s and you're missing questions in聽 the 500s and 600s i really recommend you go check聽聽
[187]
out our video on how to avoid an average gmat聽 score for more tips the next thing i did to get聽聽
[192]
a 770 on the gmat was probably the hardest聽 and that was to try to never make a mistake聽聽
[198]
more than once now i didn't do this perfectly but聽 i really really tried and part of my rationale was聽聽
[203]
that i didn't want to waste my time what's the聽 point of making a mistake 10 times when i can聽聽
[207]
learn the same lesson from making it once but more聽 important than that is that i didn't want to build聽聽
[212]
any bad habits because every time you make the聽 same mistake you're making it more likely that聽聽
[219]
you're just going to follow your habit and do it聽 on test day so instead of drilling and drilling聽聽
[226]
and drilling every time i made a mistake i would聽 stop and i would spend as much time as i needed to聽聽
[233]
to come up with a strategy that would prevent me聽 from making the same mistake in another question聽聽
[239]
so part of that is coming up with what can i聽 recognize in another question that might cause聽聽
[244]
me to make the same mistake and then what can i聽 do to avoid that in that question then i would聽聽
[250]
review those strategies periodically as a reminder聽 so again i didn't fall into that same trap again聽聽
[257]
now this sounds like it'll take a lot of time but聽 because it's taking the place of repeated drilling聽聽
[262]
it actually ends up saving you quite a bit of聽 time and you get a ton more mileage out of it聽聽
[267]
let me know in the comments if you'd like a video聽 on how to use this study strategy effectively i've聽聽
[272]
seen it work miracles for students who've been聽 stuck in plateaus the final thing i did to get聽聽
[277]
a 770 on the gmat was to study consistently and i聽 hinted earlier that your gmat study might not look聽聽
[284]
all that much like mine and that's because聽 i had a major advantage here i was already聽聽
[289]
working in test prep when i decided to take the聽 gmat and that means that i was literally working聽聽
[296]
dissecting gmat problems for a living every day聽 now this is not meant to discourage you this type聽聽
[302]
of volume is not at all necessary and definitely聽 not encouraged if you have other responsibilities聽聽
[308]
like work or school but the regularity is聽 something that i encourage because i was seeing it聽聽
[316]
every day i was able to build on prior knowledge聽 things i remembered from the day before to build聽聽
[322]
connections recognize patterns identify common聽 traps and so on now this makes me a much better聽聽
[329]
gmat teacher but it also made me a much better聽 gmat test taker so the takeaway here is not to do聽聽
[336]
what i did and try to get a job in test prep but聽 instead to try to break up your study throughout聽聽
[342]
the week that way you can more effectively build聽 on what you've learned before and take advantage聽聽
[348]
of your study time more effectively and that's聽 how i got a 770 on the gmat now if you're thinking聽聽
[353]
about aiming for a 770 gmat score yourself i聽 highly recommend checking out our video on average聽聽

[363]
spoiler alert it probably isn't a 770. and if聽 you're looking for more resources on the gmat or聽聽
