Rules for Bartering | How to Trade Your Cleaning Services for Other Goods - YouTube

Channel: Angela Brown Cleaning

[0]
does your cleaning business have rules
[2]
for bartering
[3]
rules for bartering that is barter as in
[6]
trade you give me something i give you
[8]
something
[9]
in exchange it's a good question i'm
[11]
angela brown and this is
[12]
ask a house cleaner this is a show where
[15]
you get to ask a house cleaning question
[16]
and i get to help you find an answer now
[19]
i do have somebody that wrote into the
[20]
show and they asked
[21]
this question i've been having issues
[24]
with a friend i was trading a service
[26]
for
[26]
her service she provides me is about the
[28]
same as me cleaning for two hours
[31]
now i'm cleaning for four hours and
[33]
she's been leaving the whole sink full
[35]
of dishes
[36]
and expecting things i did when i had
[38]
the extra time
[39]
i have no clue how to tell her this no
[41]
longer feels fair
[42]
and i keep justifying it to myself as
[45]
just helping a friend
[47]
nah okay so the first rule of bartering
[50]
is never do direct trades
[53]
you heard me never do direct trades that
[55]
is your friend gives you something and
[57]
you give something in exchange
[58]
here's the reason why it's never fair it
[61]
might start out as fair but it quickly
[63]
goes off balance
[64]
now i don't know what the service your
[65]
friend is providing but let's pretend
[67]
your friend is a potato farmer
[69]
okay your friend is going to give you
[70]
potatoes in exchange for you cleaning
[72]
house
[73]
very quickly your 600 a month let's just
[76]
assume you're at 50
[78]
per hour your 600 of cleaning per month
[81]
is going to go out of whack really
[82]
quickly when you realize that your
[83]
family cannot eat
[84]
600 a month worth of potatoes okay so
[87]
now you're stuck in this deal
[88]
you've made this agreement your friends
[90]
and now you feel weird and awkward
[92]
because now you're just helping a friend
[94]
okay that's not how to run a business
[96]
so i want to tell you about barter
[98]
exchanges
[99]
and one of the very first jobs that i
[101]
had before house cleaning was i was a
[103]
barter broker i worked for a trade
[105]
exchange called itex
[107]
and what we did we had a great big
[108]
storehouse where people would give us
[111]
their goods they would sell them to us
[112]
they would warehouse them inside our
[114]
exchange
[115]
so let's say that you're a house
[116]
cleaning company and you're going to
[117]
donate 500
[119]
a month at 50 an hour that is 10 hours
[122]
of house cleaning that you're going to
[123]
run
[124]
through the trade exchange per month
[125]
okay not give it to your friend but run
[128]
it through the trade exchange
[130]
how it works is like this you make up 10
[132]
vouchers for
[133]
one hour a piece and you give those to
[135]
the trade exchange they credit your
[137]
account for 500
[139]
okay cool now there are lots of
[142]
companies that will say hey listen i'm a
[144]
hotel
[144]
and we didn't you know we have so many
[146]
nights that we don't sell we have empty
[148]
rooms
[148]
we're going to give these rooms to the
[150]
exchange we're going to sell these to
[151]
the exchange so now the hotels are
[153]
available so i could go in with my 500
[156]
and i could buy a night at a hotel and
[157]
you say well i don't stay at a hotel i
[159]
don't need a hotel
[160]
the cool thing is there are lots of
[161]
businesses like the pet groomers
[163]
and the masseuses and all the different
[165]
people who have smaller businesses it
[167]
might be a house painter
[168]
it might be somebody who does ad copy
[170]
for the ads that you write it might be
[171]
somebody else who specializes in direct
[173]
mail marketing
[174]
who could help you put the ads together
[175]
it might be a graphic designer for
[177]
your social media it might actually be
[179]
somebody who boosts social media
[181]
i know that the savvy cleaner training
[182]
program that we run is in a barter
[184]
exchange
[185]
so that instead of you paying cash for
[187]
your monthly membership you could pay
[188]
with your barter dollars you see how
[190]
that works
[190]
so what happens is with your 500 you can
[192]
go in there and you can spend your money
[194]
anywhere in the exchange in exchange
[198]
for your membership per month right
[200]
you're going to give 10
[201]
hours per cleaning per month now here's
[203]
where it gets really cool
[204]
let's say that you're a startup business
[206]
and your business is kind of slow and
[207]
you're trying to get off the ground and
[208]
you're trying to get visibility
[210]
what's really awesome about this is if
[211]
you only give 10 vouchers
[213]
how far is that going to go well we
[214]
already know that your potato farmer
[216]
needs
[217]
600 of cleaning a month not five
[220]
so what happens is they might get all of
[222]
your vouchers
[223]
but here's the catch they got to pay the
[225]
other hundred dollars in cash
[227]
so let's say that you have several
[228]
different clients and they all want to
[229]
participate
[230]
in your service per month they all may
[232]
only get one or two hours
[234]
and then all the rest of the cleaning
[235]
they have to pay you in cash so it's a
[237]
really great way to pick up extra
[238]
business
[239]
that starts out as a barter customer and
[241]
they may eventually
[242]
and occasionally have barter vouchers to
[245]
use towards their cleaning credit
[247]
but most of them will be paying in cash
[249]
now the cool thing is once you go to
[251]
their house and you do the walkthrough
[252]
and you built a relationship with them
[253]
that goes on a waitlist client so at any
[256]
time you can call them up and say hey
[257]
listen we had a cancellation
[258]
i know that you're a barter customer
[260]
would you want to have us come over
[262]
so even if you didn't sell it for cash
[263]
and it's this dead time
[265]
maybe you could sell it to a barter
[266]
customer right not only that but you get
[268]
listed in their directories
[270]
wherever their directories go so now
[272]
your business just went up both in the
[273]
search engines
[274]
and also as a another way to market your
[277]
business and another way to be out there
[278]
right there's somebody out there right
[280]
now that's marketing your service to all
[281]
of their clients
[282]
so it's another great way to advertise
[284]
your business
[286]
so the rules of bartering are these
[289]
number one never do a direct trade
[290]
number two make sure that you know up
[293]
front and you have specified how many
[295]
hours per month
[296]
you're going to donate to the exchange
[298]
because if it's only 10 hours it's only
[300]
10 hours
[301]
so you don't get to a customer's house
[303]
you don't do a walk through and then
[304]
have them say
[305]
uh well can you just do like the next 10
[307]
cleanings for
[308]
for whatever you're not going to go off
[309]
book you're not going to do side deals
[311]
and you're not going to let them take
[312]
away all of your cash business
[314]
for the barter okay you're only going to
[316]
do however many hours you allotted
[318]
all right rule number three you have to
[319]
spend your money inside the exchange
[322]
so plan vacations i know lots of
[324]
amusement parks it cost them nothing
[326]
else to have
[327]
barter certificates right and so i've
[329]
gone to lots and lots of amusement parks
[331]
and i've stayed at lots of five-star
[332]
resorts
[332]
on my barter because it's a reduced fee
[335]
they can offer up for less money
[337]
it doesn't cost them anything if someone
[339]
else comes to participate
[340]
it's a great way to use your barter
[341]
dollars also if you have a team of
[343]
people
[344]
that you are employing you can have a
[346]
great big party let's say at an
[347]
amusement park and you pay for all of it
[349]
with your barter dollars
[350]
right so you have to use your barter
[352]
dollars in order for it to be worth
[354]
your money all right another rule of the
[356]
bartering industry
[357]
is you must pay taxes this is considered
[360]
other income
[360]
so when the money comes in they will
[362]
keep the ledger they keep how much money
[364]
you spent
[365]
how much money you earned and they give
[367]
you a monthly report or statement that
[368]
shows how much money you came in
[370]
and a tax a tax report at the end of the
[373]
year so you can pay your taxes on that
[374]
so the rule is you pay your taxes that's
[376]
totally legal but it's another whole way
[378]
to bring in business
[380]
all right so those are the rules of
[381]
bartering again i want you to think of
[383]
it as an opportunity to do business
[386]
because it's another way to get out
[387]
there it's another way to be seen it's
[389]
another way to be visible
[390]
and it's a more fair way to interact
[393]
with your friend
[394]
in a way that doesn't feel so personal
[396]
like they're taking advantage of you
[397]
and you're just helping out a friend
[399]
alright i hope that helps if it does
[401]
give us a thumbs up
[402]
if you have questions or comments those
[403]
go in the notes below and until we meet
[405]
again
[406]
leave the world a cleaner place than
[408]
when you found it
