[1]
when the roman officer who stood facing
[3]
him saw how he had died he exclaimed
[6]
this man truly was the son of god
[9]
mark chapter 15 verse 39 in lt
[14]
the final moments of jesus's life are
[16]
recorded in mark chapter 15 verses 33
[19]
through 39.
[20]
his path to the cross had been torturous
[23]
he had been abandoned ridiculed
[25]
humiliated and tortured
[27]
now as he hangs on the cross
[30]
jesus breathes his last breath
[33]
mark chapter 15 verse 33
[36]
at noon darkness came over the whole
[38]
land until three in the afternoon
[40]
this would be twelve o'clock in the
[42]
afternoon and the darkness would last
[44]
until the ninth hour or three o'clock
[47]
this otherworldly darkness arrived when
[49]
the sun was shining highest
[51]
because the moon was now full it
[54]
couldn't have been created by an eclipse
[56]
because the moon can't intervene between
[58]
the earth and the sun when it's full
[60]
this darkness was undoubtedly brought
[63]
about by god's prompt intervention
[66]
flagon of traelas an emperor adrian's
[69]
freedman gives a description of it
[71]
eusebius in his records of the year a.d
[74]
quotes extensively from flagon who
[76]
claims that in the fourth year of the
[78]
202nd olympiad a large and extraordinary
[81]
eclipse of the sun occurred surpassing
[84]
any that had previously occurred
[87]
at the sixth hour the day was turned
[89]
into the darkness of night so that stars
[91]
were seen in the heaven and there was a
[93]
great earthquake in bethennia
[96]
and there was a great earthquake in
[98]
bethennia which overthrew many houses in
[100]
the city of nicea
[102]
flagon attributes the darkness which he
[104]
describes to an eclipse which was
[106]
natural enough for him to do astronomy
[109]
knowledge was rudimentary at the time an
[111]
earthquake is also mentioned by flagon
[114]
this puts his story in very close
[116]
alignment with the sacred narrative
[119]
saint cyprian adds
[121]
the son was constrained to withdraw his
[123]
rays and close his eyes that he might
[125]
not be compelled to look upon this crime
[127]
of the jews
[129]
to the same purpose saint chrysostom
[132]
the creature could not bear the wrong
[134]
done to its creator therefore the son
[136]
withdrew his rays that he might not
[138]
behold the deeds of the wicked
[141]
chapter 15 verse 34
[143]
and at the ninth hour jesus cried with a
[146]
loud voice saying eloy eloy lama
[149]
sabachthani which is being interpreted
[152]
my god my god why hast thou forsaken me
[160]
saint mark here uses the aramaic form
[163]
saint matthew refers to the original
[165]
hebrew
[166]
this might be rendered why this thou
[168]
forsake me
[170]
mark chapter 15 verse 35
[173]
and some of them that stood by when they
[175]
heard it said behold he calleth elias
[179]
those who lingered around the cross
[181]
despite the mysterious darkness are
[183]
mentioned in verse 35
[185]
the darkness would certainly add to the
[187]
dreadfulness of the situation
[189]
it was out of that darkness that the
[191]
voice of jesus was heard and inasmuch as
[194]
elias or elijah was believed to hold
[197]
some relation to the messiah it was
[199]
natural for some of those who stood by
[201]
to understand the words to mean that our
[204]
lord was actually calling for elias
[206]
mark chapter 15 verse 36 and one ran and
[210]
filled a sponge full of vinegar and put
[212]
it on a reed and gave it to him to drink
[214]
saying let alone let us see whether
[217]
elias will come to take him down
[219]
and jesus cried with a loud voice and
[222]
gave up the ghost
[223]
and the veil of the temples was rent in
[225]
twain from the top to the bottom
[228]
there were two veils one before the holy
[230]
place and the second before the holy of
[232]
holies
[233]
the holy place would agree to what we
[235]
call the nave of the church
[237]
in which the priests were always present
[240]
and the holy of holies would match to
[242]
our chancel choir the holiest part of
[244]
the building
[245]
this was always kept closed nor might
[248]
anyone enter it but the high priest and
[250]
that only once in the year on the day of
[253]
expiation
[255]
the veil which was rent and our lord's
[257]
death was that which was placed before
[259]
the holy of holies
[262]
it was the responsibility of the
[263]
officiating priests on the evening of
[265]
the day of preparation at the hour of
[268]
evening prayer which would correspond to
[270]
the time of our lord's death to enter
[272]
into the holy place where he would of
[274]
course be between the two curtains or
[276]
veils the outer veil and the inner veil
[280]
it would then be his responsibility to
[282]
roll back the outer veil exposing the
[284]
sacred space to the people in the outer
[286]
court
[288]
then and there to their amazement they
[290]
would witness the inner veil ripped
[292]
apart from top to bottom
[294]
according to josephus these veils or
[296]
curtains were of immense bulk heavy and
[299]
beautifully embroidered with gold and
[301]
purple this tearing of the veil now
[303]
meant
[304]
first dispensation with its rights and
[307]
ceremonies was now uncovered by christ
[310]
and that thenceforth the middle wall of
[312]
partition was broken down so that now
[314]
not the jews only but the gentiles also
[317]
might draw nigh by the blood of christ
[320]
but second it also implied that the way
[323]
to heaven was laid open by our lord's
[325]
death
[326]
when thou hatst overcome the sharpness
[328]
of death thou didst open the kingdom of
[330]
heaven to all believers
[333]
the veil implied that heaven was closed
[335]
to all until christ by his death rent
[338]
this veil in twain and laid open the way
[342]
mark chapter 15 verse 39
[345]
and when the centurion which stood over
[347]
against him saw that he so cried out and
[349]
gave up the ghost he said truly this man
[353]
was the son of god
[355]
the words so cried out are not in the
[357]
most important authorities
[360]
the centurion's job was to keep an eye
[362]
on everything and see that the sentence
[364]
was carried out he must have been
[366]
standing close to the crest and there
[368]
was something in the dying sufferer's
[370]
entire demeanor that was so unlike
[373]
anything he had ever seen before that it
[376]
elicited the spontaneous cry
[378]
truly this man was the son of god
[381]
he had watched him through those
[382]
weirsome hours he had seen the meekness
[385]
in the dignity of the sufferer he had
[387]
heard those words so profoundly
[389]
impressed upon the faith and reverence
[391]
of christians which fell from him from
[393]
time to time as he hung there and then
[396]
at last he heard the piercing cry so
[398]
startling so unexpected which escaped
[401]
him just before he yielded up his spirit
[404]
and he could come to no other conclusion
[406]
than this that he was in very deed god's
[409]
son
[411]
in just a few verses mark packs a lot of
[414]
punch there's a lot to say about the
[416]
strange events that occur but today we
[418]
are drawn to the roman officer who
[420]
admired jesus after he died
[424]
jesus influenced those close to him the
[426]
thief on the cross had reacted uniquely
[428]
to him and now the soldier overseeing
[430]
him has to remark that he is the son of
[433]
god
[434]
jesus had kept his identity hidden at
[436]
the beginning of his ministry now it was
[438]
plain for everyone to see as a commander
[442]
a centurion was in control of the
[444]
soldiers who dealt with jesus
[446]
did he participate in the soldiers
[448]
taunting and beating of jesus as they
[450]
crowned him with thorns
[452]
maybe
[453]
or perhaps he was too respectable for
[455]
such antics
[456]
maybe he was the one who gave simon of
[459]
cyrene the task of carrying jesus cross
[462]
once they arrived at golgotha the place
[465]
of the crucifixion the nails were driven
[467]
through jesus's wrists and he was raised
[469]
up on the cross
[472]
this was just another day at the office
[474]
really his function was to supervise the
[477]
execution of offenders via crucifixion
[480]
but somewhere along the way jesus ceased
[483]
to appear to him as a common criminal
[486]
perhaps it was the way jesus engaged
[488]
with the world's powers he never begged
[490]
for his life perhaps it was jesus words
[493]
of love from the cross that moved him
[495]
perhaps it was the strange darkness that
[498]
blanketed the land
[500]
maybe it was the tearing of the veil
[503]
alternatively perhaps jesus had imparted
[505]
truth to this officer as they traveled
[507]
down the road
[509]
something stirred in this man's soul as
[511]
he gazed at jesus's lifeless body
[514]
whatever that was
[516]
i imagined him staring up at the cross
[518]
mouth gaping as he wraps words around
[521]
his thoughts
[522]
this man truly was the son of god
[525]
what a declaration for a roman officer
[528]
to make
[529]
if any of the religious leaders
[531]
overheard him they would have lost their
[533]
minds
[534]
he just spent the previous day
[536]
persuading rome to execute jesus
[538]
precisely because he was blaspheming
[541]
about being god's son
[543]
it's one thing to recognize jesus as the
[545]
son of god when he's alive
[547]
peter recognizes jesus as the messiah in
[550]
mark chapter 8 verses 29 and 30.
[554]
and he sayeth unto them but whom say ye
[556]
that i am and peter answereth and saith
[559]
unto him thou art the christ and he
[562]
charged them that they should tell no
[564]
man of him
[566]
when jesus is alive it's one thing to
[568]
recognize him as the son of god
[570]
it's another thing to recognize jesus as
[573]
the son of god after the resurrection
[576]
many people came to faith then
[578]
but to recognize jesus as the son of god
[581]
when he is dead
[582]
and all hope is gone
[584]
this roman officer may be the only
[587]
person to have done such a thing
[589]
so what happened to that roman officer
[593]
we have no idea
[594]
i'm sure he had a lot on his mind in the
[596]
days ahead especially as word spread
[599]
that jesus was still alive
[601]
perhaps he realized the gravity of his
[603]
crimes against jesus
[605]
what we do know is that it wasn't too
[607]
late for him while on the cross jesus
[610]
was paying the cost for this officer's
[612]
sins he was paving the way for this
[615]
officer to be with his father
[617]
as stuart townsend wrote in to him how
[619]
deep the father's love for us
[622]
behold the man upon a cross my sin upon
[625]
his shoulders
[626]
ashamed i hear my mocking voice call out
[629]
among the scoffers
[631]
we need to realize that jesus died for
[633]
you
[634]
do not reject him once you know him once
[637]
you've heard the gospel and rejected it
[640]
you can never be the same
[642]
it says that when the rich young ruler
[644]
rejected christ he turned away grieved
[646]
emotionally disturbed because when you
[649]
reject the claims of christ that's a
[651]
very serious thing
[653]
it will be an hour of decision for many
[655]
of you who will receive him today
[658]
there have been those that have been
[659]
rejected by god however an example is
[662]
saul to watch the rise and fall of saul
