Budgeting vs Expense Tracking - YouTube

Channel: You Need A Budget (YNAB)

[0]
hello today i'm here to clear the air a
[3]
little bit
[4]
there are some sneaky words in the
[5]
financial sphere
[7]
that tend to sound the same but they are
[10]
different but we
[11]
think they're the same but they're not
[13]
you know
[14]
so let's just let's just iron that out
[18]
[Music]
[21]
hello friends and probably family today
[24]
we're going to chat through the
[25]
difference between
[26]
budgeting and expense tracking oh
[30]
to kick us off real strong expense
[33]
tracking is
[33]
reactive while budgeting is proactive
[36]
let me explain
[38]
what i mean expense tracking often looks
[40]
like going back into your bank account
[42]
every once in a while to reflect
[44]
on the purchases you've made after
[45]
you've already made them
[47]
and maybe lumping them all into certain
[49]
logical categories
[50]
so you can see how much you spent in
[52]
that category
[54]
it's a great way to see where your money
[56]
has gone
[58]
after the fact if you've been expense
[60]
tracking you're probably pretty familiar
[62]
with the
[63]
huh i had a thousand dollars in checking
[65]
at the start of this week and now i only
[67]
have 300 type
[68]
situation in that kind of scenario you
[71]
go back to your bank account and try to
[73]
figure out how
[74]
you got there there's not much of a plan
[76]
for your money or how it will be spent
[78]
you just end most months realizing about
[81]
30 days too late how much you've really
[83]
ate out and saying for the
[85]
fourth month in a row oh well i'll just
[87]
do less amazon shopping next month
[90]
funny how that seems to go budgeting on
[93]
the other hand
[93]
is deciding before you even spend a dime
[96]
what each dollar you have is going to do
[99]
for example you put a certain amount of
[100]
dollars in a category for rent
[102]
give your family five hundred dollars to
[104]
spend on groceries that month
[106]
let yourself have fifty dollars just for
[108]
fun random expenses
[110]
set aside eighty dollars for future car
[112]
repairs you get it
[114]
you're making a plan for what each of
[116]
your dollars jobs will be
[117]
before even ever spending them budgeting
[120]
gives you more control and clarity about
[123]
your money because you can see
[124]
before the month ends roughly about how
[126]
the month will end
[128]
no plan ever goes perfectly of course
[130]
you'll have to move some dollars around
[132]
here and there
[133]
but you'll know when it's time to reel
[135]
it in on the eating out when you see you
[137]
only have ten dollars left for eating
[139]
out
[139]
if you think about it like driving a car
[142]
expense tracking
[143]
is cruising down the highway with your
[145]
eyes only on the rear view mirror
[148]
only looking back to determine where
[150]
you've been
[151]
first off terrifying secondly
[154]
that does not give you a good sense of
[156]
control
[157]
third how are you supposed to figure out
[159]
where you can safely go
[161]
or turn next budgeting on the other hand
[164]
is pulling out your map to figure out
[166]
where you want to go
[167]
first before you even put the pedal to
[169]
the metal and making a plan for how
[171]
you're gonna get there
[172]
now that you're looking ahead out the
[174]
windshield instead of the rear view
[177]
you can start to see bumps coming in the
[178]
road and prepare for them
[180]
instead of running into them at 70 miles
[183]
an hour
[184]
and since you have a plan for where
[185]
you'd like to go and when you want to
[187]
get there by
[188]
you know when you're good to pull over
[190]
and grab a shake at sonic
[191]
and when you can't do you have enough
[194]
time and gas to do that
[196]
or should you save your time and guess
[198]
to reach the place you want to get to
[200]
first are you seeing what i'm saying
[201]
here so
[203]
how do you know if you've just been
[205]
expense tracking this whole time
[207]
well i'll tell you i was shocked to
[210]
learn the other day that even
[212]
jesse mecum creator of the app you need
[215]
a budget
[215]
admitted to using his app only as an
[218]
expense tracker for the longest time
[220]
before he
[221]
truly moved into the budgeting headspace
[224]
what
[225]
jess you made the app but
[228]
then i think to myself huh wait no i
[231]
definitely use ynab as an expense
[233]
tracker too
[234]
for years before i actually wrap my head
[237]
around
[237]
productive budgeting okay never mind
[240]
jess
[240]
you off the hook jesse says that you
[243]
might be an expense tracker rather than
[245]
a budgeter if
[246]
one you don't establish budgeted dollar
[249]
amounts at the start of the month
[251]
but rather you just write down how much
[253]
you spent in a certain spending category
[255]
at the end of the month like it's march
[257]
1st and after you calculated the fact
[259]
that you spent 200
[261]
eating out in february you write down
[263]
february
[264]
eating out 200 i mean
[268]
that's like straight up expense tracking
[270]
in its purest form
[272]
you can't even disguise that two you
[274]
consistently budget the exact same
[276]
amount to a budgeting category
[278]
every month even though you always spend
[281]
more than that amount
[282]
every single month this is how despite
[286]
the fact that you're budgeting every
[287]
month
[288]
you can still rack up more and more
[290]
credit card debt
[291]
you're completely ignoring the budgeting
[293]
guidelines you've set for yourself
[295]
i've been guilty of this at many a time
[297]
in my life
[298]
and i would be lying if i said i didn't
[300]
do this
[301]
just last week so you're not alone or
[304]
three you rarely or let's be honest
[307]
never
[308]
check your category balances to see if
[310]
you can afford something before spending
[312]
but you always make sure to record your
[315]
purchase to your budget
[316]
after the fact as if writing it down
[318]
makes it more
[319]
responsible or something well luckily
[322]
this is a
[323]
very solvable problem i would guess that
[326]
almost all of us probably start out
[329]
simply expense tracking before we
[331]
realize it's not
[332]
quite enough to make a significant
[334]
impact on our financial decisions
[336]
so if you want to move away from just
[339]
expense tracking
[340]
and start truly budgeting here are four
[343]
steps
[343]
jesse of you need a budget recommends to
[345]
help you get
[346]
on the right track first if you've been
[348]
expense tracking for a while
[350]
use your spending history to determine
[352]
comfortable dollar amounts for each
[354]
category in your budget
[356]
decide at the start of the month how
[358]
much you'll give yourself
[359]
for groceries or car fuel clothes or
[362]
even meals on the go
[364]
but remember that you should only budget
[366]
dollars you
[367]
have don't budget out a future paycheck
[369]
before you have it
[371]
you don't want to think you have more
[373]
dollars to spend in your budget than you
[375]
actually do if it's not in the bank
[378]
don't budget it
[379]
give every dollar you do have a job that
[381]
it's going to do
[382]
even if that job is savings so that you
[385]
know how far
[386]
all of your current dollars can take you
[388]
you won't feel in control of your money
[390]
until you have a plan
[392]
so carving out a plan is a hugely
[394]
important step
[396]
secondly you have to consult the budget
[398]
before making a purchase
[400]
a written down budget is only a pipe
[402]
dream until you can start
[404]
looking to the budget to answer the
[406]
question can i actually buy this thing
[408]
right now
[409]
if your budget says you don't have
[411]
enough money in your home improvement
[412]
category to buy a new shoe organizer for
[414]
the entryway
[416]
you have two options one you can listen
[418]
to your budget and say
[420]
okay i guess we'll have to buy the shoe
[422]
organizer another month
[424]
or two you can look at your budget see
[427]
what other categories might have some
[429]
extra money in it that you won't need
[430]
that month
[431]
and move it over to your home
[433]
improvement category so you
[435]
can buy that thing this month just know
[437]
that you'll have
[438]
less money to spend in the category you
[440]
borrowed money from
[442]
but that's okay because you got your new
[444]
shoe organizer
[446]
and that's what you really wanted this
[448]
month
[449]
man you know you've really reached
[451]
adulthood when
[452]
a shoe organizer is your number one
[455]
third
[455]
identify what your key goals are and
[457]
make a small space in the budget for
[459]
each one
[460]
in other words trim a few of your normal
[462]
categories to free up some extra money
[464]
to send to your goals
[466]
can you get by with 10 less dollars in
[468]
your eating out category so you can
[470]
move that money over to get the instant
[473]
pot you really want
[474]
it'll speed up meals after work and you
[476]
won't have to eat out as much
[478]
budgeting doesn't have to be restrictive
[481]
it can also
[482]
very much get you exactly what you want
[485]
and jessie's last piece of advice
[487]
seems a bit odd but it's totally the
[490]
secret sauce
[491]
allow yourself to get addicted to
[493]
progress
[494]
and let that addiction motivate you to
[497]
squeeze your daily spending so that you
[499]
can boost your progress
[500]
on your goals let your enthusiasm to
[503]
live the life
[504]
you want guide you to be more
[506]
intentional with your dollars
[507]
rather than just trying to cut spending
[510]
because you think it's what you should
[511]
do
[512]
and here's the big kicker the sign that
[515]
you've made it you'll know you've fully
[518]
transitioned from
[519]
expense tracking to budgeting when you
[521]
use your budget to tell your money
[524]
what to do instead of using it to tell
[526]
you what your money
[528]
already did does that make sense that's
[531]
the power of a good
[532]
true budget you are in control and you
[535]
have security knowing that you've got a
[537]
plan
[537]
that can work because you can see right
[540]
in front of you
[541]
how it's going to work so
[544]
again to sum it up first step budget to
[547]
zero
[548]
give every dollar in your bank account a
[550]
job it's going to do
[551]
whether it's buying groceries paying
[554]
rent crushing your student loans or
[556]
padding your dog's vet fund secondly
[559]
look to your budget
[560]
before you spend it will tell you
[563]
whether you're able to purchase that
[564]
thing right now
[565]
or if you might want to wait till later
[568]
third
[568]
if there isn't enough money in a
[570]
category to buy the things you want
[572]
decide which category in the budget
[574]
you're going to borrow that money from
[576]
before you spend it as you keep
[578]
following your plans and seeing that
[580]
progress
[581]
this will be the fuel to help you keep
[583]
reaching your goals
[584]
that's it now i'm not going to lie to
[587]
you numbers 2 and 3 are harder habits to
[590]
build than they seem
[591]
but they are absolute game changers that
[594]
will start to give you the confidence
[596]
security and motivation you need to
[599]
actually start to build the financial
[601]
life
[601]
you want now tracking all of this in a
[604]
journal or on an excel sheet can get
[606]
complicated or
[607]
a little messy if you're interested
[610]
