New York judge holds Trump in contempt of court - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
former president trump faces a ten
[2]
thousand dollar a day fine until he
[4]
turns over documents sought by new york
[5]
attorney general leticia james attorneys
[8]
for mr trump claim he does not have the
[10]
documents james is requesting but the
[12]
judge ruled the lawyers didn't provide
[13]
enough details about how they tried to
[15]
find them
[16]
joining me now is cbs news investigative
[18]
reporter graham cates so graham where is
[21]
attorney general james requesting be
[23]
searched for these documents
[27]
this is really interesting we got really
[29]
specific information today about where
[32]
they want to have searches done and
[33]
what's been lacking uh and for for
[35]
instance they mentioned at least two or
[38]
three specific mobile devices they say
[40]
either belong to donald trump or were
[43]
kind of company issued um and then they
[46]
they
[47]
were very specific here they said the
[48]
files located in cabinets outside mr
[51]
trump's office another one was the
[53]
storage room by mr trump's office
[56]
another one was the executive office
[58]
storage closet and then the file
[60]
cabinets located on the 25th and 26th
[64]
floors so we're not talking about them
[66]
saying go through the entire trump
[68]
organization and find whatever you can
[69]
find i mean these are really specific
[71]
locations
[72]
what are they hoping these documents
[74]
shed light on what do they think is
[76]
going to come from getting these
[77]
documents
[79]
well this is a really wide-ranging civil
[81]
probe looking at the financing of many
[85]
many properties and and mr trump's
[87]
finances as well and they kind of
[89]
described it as just seeing his name
[92]
with pen to paper uh because they're at
[94]
this point in the investigation this has
[96]
been over two years of collecting
[98]
documents by their by the trump
[100]
organization's description more than a
[101]
million pages of documents but they say
[104]
only 10 of those documents provided by
[107]
either the trump organization in
[109]
previous subpoenas or or trump himself
[111]
um actually linked specifically to
[114]
donald trump and so they're saying we
[117]
just want to see
[118]
that you're able to provide us with
[120]
something that has his name on it so
[123]
that we we know that you're really
[124]
complying with this at this point so
[126]
what did mr trump's attorney say about
[128]
all this and what did the judge say in
[129]
response to trump's argument
[133]
his attorney elena said that she
[135]
personally oversaw some of the document
[138]
discovery in this case and she mentioned
[140]
it was kind of a surprise she mentioned
[141]
that she flew down to florida to to
[144]
interview trump at mar-a-lago under the
[147]
terms of the subpoena and you could see
[148]
that the judge was surprised by this and
[150]
then he kind of interrupted her and he
[152]
said well if if you're doing discovery
[155]
and you're interviewing donald trump
[157]
then he described this as the 800 pound
[159]
gorilla in the room
[161]
he said why why not get a sworn
[162]
affidavit from donald trump saying
[165]
we've done all the search we can do i
[167]
don't have anything more to provide and
[170]
this really um
[171]
afterwards we me and a few reporters uh
[174]
spoke with elita hava and she said she'd
[177]
be willing to provide her own affidavit
[180]
um explaining her own search measures
[182]
but was far less committal about whether
[185]
she would be willing to submit one
[187]
signed by donald trump himself it was
[190]
really surprising
[192]
so this attorney general inquiry is
[194]
running parallel to a criminal
[196]
investigation by the d.a in manhattan
[198]
what's the latest with the criminal
[199]
probe
[202]
right now there's this kind of uh it
[205]
publicly it seems like it's a little
[206]
stalled out several high file
[208]
prosecutors have left the office in the
[209]
last few years last few months and said
[212]
we believe that the that we were already
[215]
ready to bring
[216]
i'm sorry one in particular mark palmer
[218]
said in his resignation letter that he
[220]
believed that they were already ready to
[222]
bring a charge against donald trump but
[224]
that the new district attorney who was
[226]
elected in in
[228]
november alvin bragg wasn't ready to do
[231]
that and he thought this has gone on
[233]
long enough we need to move on but the
[234]
new district attorney has said actually
[236]
you know we're exploring new information
[238]
here and i just don't didn't think yet
[240]
in february that it was time to charge
[242]
but but this thing's far from over so
[244]
we're kind of waiting to see who who's
[246]
telling the truth on that is it is there
[248]
a prosecutor who resigned or is the the
[250]
district attorney still in the in office
[252]
who's saying that we're still looking
[253]
into this more
[255]
so i need you to decode one of these
[256]
things we hear in court a lot we know
[258]
the attorney general's office in new
[259]
york and the trump organization have
[261]
this tolling agreement and that the
[263]
tolling agreement is about to end
[265]
what does that mean what does it mean
[266]
for the trump organization
[269]
so it means basically that certain
[271]
statutes of limitations uh in terms of
[273]
when you can charge or when you can
[275]
bring up things in litigation are
[277]
essentially on hiatus during this
[278]
agreement that the two sides agree to
[280]
while they work through document
[281]
production and some other issues related
[284]
to the case now their tolling agreement
[286]
is about to end and in court one of the
[289]
lawyers for the attorney general said
[291]
they do believe that after that tolling
[293]
agreement is over they expect to bring
[295]
some sort of he called it enforcement
[297]
action um and they didn't explain it
[299]
further than that so so what we know is
[302]
um after these next few weeks of
[303]
discovery and this content motion and
[305]
all this stuff we're going to get
[307]
something from the attorney general in
[309]
terms of some sort of enforcement
[311]
whether it's against the trump
[312]
organization or trump
[315]
which gives you the honor and the
[316]
pleasure of checking the court docket
[318]
every few minutes in new york city
[321]
graham cates thanks for being with us
[323]
thank you
