Just Another Day: How to Survive an Active Shooter Event on Campus - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[5]
It's just another day at Towson University.
[7]
Where the University Police Department and the Office of Public Safety
[11]
work hard to promote a safe and secure environment
[14]
for the university students, faculty, staff and visitors to the campus community.
[20]
Although it is statistically unlikely you will ever encounter such a situation
[24]
it is possible that someone may come onto campus with the intention of harming others.
[31]
It could happen with little to no warning
[34]
at any time at any location.
[39]
"So let's break it down."
[41]
"As to do with anything in monetary policy..."
[43]
"...it's all about winners and losers when consumers..."
[48]
It is the responsibility of everyone to remain vigilant
[51]
and know the steps to take for keeping themselves and others safe.
[58]
For if the unthinkable were to happen
[60]
and an active shooter event were to occur on campus
[63]
it would begin like just another day.
[77]
Should you ever find yourself in an active shooter event
[80]
it is important that you have a plan in place.
[83]
"Ken, can I see that file you've been working on?"
[85]
It doesn't have to be complicated
[87]
but you must act quickly and decisively.
[90]
"It looks great!"
[92]
What you do in those first moments
[95]
may be the difference between life and death.
[98]
The Towson University Police Department wants you to learn and memorize
[102]
these three key actions you must take should that day ever come.
[107]
AVOID
[108]
DENY
[109]
DEFEND
[112]
Your survival and the survival of others may depend on it.
[118]
[gun loading]
[122]
Remember these words.
[124]
AVOID
[125]
DENY
[126]
DEFEND
[129]
[gunshot]
[130]
If you hear what sounds like gunshots,
[133]
[gunshot]
[134]
don't hesitate or wait for others to act.
[136]
"...and the stimulating..."
[137]
[gunshot]
[138]
"...effects of monetary policy are no longer..."
[141]
[gunshot]
[144]
[gunshot]
[145]
Get ready to take action and protect yourself.
[150]
[gunshots]
[155]
Towson University Police, Operator 426.
[158]
What's the location of your emergency?
[159]
"I'm in the CLA Building and someone with a gun started shooting. People are hurt. We need help!"
[164]
"TU 30 to back. TU 10 for your information."
[166]
"Respond to the Liberal Arts Building."
[168]
"That's the Liberal Arts Building for a report of an active shooter."
[171]
"Caller states that a white male dressed in all black..."
[174]
"...armed with a long rifle is firing shots in the building."
[178]
"In route."
[179]
When an active shooter is reported on campus
[182]
emergency personnel will immediately spring into action.
[187]
Text messages are sent to all registered devices
[190]
alerting students and staff to the danger on campus.
[195]
"This is really happening."
[197]
Additional alert systems will also broadcast or display warnings across the campus
[202]
and online on the university's website.
[204]
[mobile phone vibrating]
[209]
[gunshots]
[216]
AVOID
[217]
If you can safely find an exit
[219]
[gunshot]
[220]
leave the area as quickly as possible to avoid danger.
[223]
[gunshot]
[224]
Encourage others to leave with you.
[226]
"Come with me."
[227]
"Come on."
[228]
"Don't be afraid."
[231]
[gunshot]
[237]
[gunshot]
[240]
Don't hesitate.
[241]
"Let's go. Get to the exit."
[242]
"'Ok. Ok. Wait, wait my phone."
[245]
"Go now just leave it!"
[246]
Leave all belongings behind.
[249]
Your first priority should be your safety.
[252]
Only once you are safely outside the building and away from danger
[256]
call campus police at 410-704-4444.
[262]
"LA building."
[263]
"The shooter's inside."
[265]
"He's wearing all black."
[266]
"Black shirt, black pants, black jacket."
[269]
Answer all questions
[270]
and try your best to provide the location and description of the shooter.
[274]
Prevent others from entering the danger area.
[278]
"We have to go. We just have to go. Come on!"
[298]
[gunshots]
[305]
DENY
[306]
"Everyone remain calm."
[308]
If you're unable to safely exit the area
[310]
you must find a safe place to take shelter
[313]
and deny access to the shooter.
[315]
"Someone call the police."
[316]
[gunshots]
[319]
"Should we run?"
[320]
"No no no it's not safe out there."
[322]
"We need to blockade the door now."
[324]
"Yes. Quickly everyone get those tables and put them in front of the door."
[327]
"Pile all the chairs on top."
[328]
"Everything heavy has to go in front of the door."
[330]
Act quickly and quietly.
[332]
Block and secure all doors.
[334]
If you are able to
[335]
barricade the door with heavy furniture and other items.
[338]
Turn off all lights and stay away from doors and windows to avoid being seen.
[343]
"Be absolutely silent."
[344]
"Nobody move."
[345]
"And stay away from the door."
[347]
Do your best to remain calm and quiet.
[351]
Your instinct may be to hide
[352]
but be prepared to fight back
[354]
should the shooter gain entry to the room.
[359]
[mobile phone vibrating]
[360]
Remember to silence your cell phone
[362]
and other mobile devices.
[395]
When an active shooter is reported on campus
[398]
emergency personnel will immediately spring into action.
[401]
They have only one primary goal in this moment,
[404]
to locate and take down the shooter.
[408]
DEFEND
[410]
If you are unable to avoid the threat
[412]
or deny the shooter access.
[414]
Then your last resort
[415]
must be to defend yourself.
[418]
"He's coming."
[419]
Be decisive and commit yourself to fighting back.
[422]
"We have to fight back!"
[424]
Your very survival may depend on it.
[426]
"So grab anything that you can..."
[428]
"...and give him all that you've got."
[431]
"Alright, let's do this!"
[433]
Improvise weapons from what is available around you.
[436]
Your goal is to disarm and take down the shooter at all costs.
[440]
"Locked."
[441]
"Door on the left open."
[444]
"Go, go, go."
[447]
"Clear, coming out."
[458]
Taking advantage of your strength in numbers
[461]
and using the element of surprise
[463]
gives you the best chance at survival.
[481]
"Hallway clear."
[483]
It's important to know that when the first responders arrive on the scene
[487]
their priority is to stop the shooter.
[490]
"How many is it?"
[490]
"Where'd he go?"
[492]
"Where'd he go?"
[493]
"He went that way."
[494]
They are not there to treat the injured or assist with evacuation
[498]
until the threat has been neutralized.
[500]
"Gun, suspect found."
[501]
"Hands up!"
[502]
"Everybody hands up!"
[503]
"Keep you hands where we can see them!"
[505]
"We got him!"
[506]
Follow their instructions and keep your hands visible at all times.
[510]
"Don't move"
[511]
"Don't you move"
[511]
"You hear me?"
[512]
"Do you hear me?"
[513]
"Don't move."
[514]
"Stay there."
[516]
"Better not move."
[517]
"Get up."
[518]
Only once the building is secure
[520]
will paramedics and other emergency personnel
[522]
evacuate the building and treat the wounded.
[525]
"We're going to take good care of you and we're get you out of here, ok?"
[527]
"Keep breathing. You're doing good."
[529]
Know that help is on the way.
[533]
Your actions can make a difference.
[535]
Your safety and the safety of others may depend on it.
[539]
You must remain vigilant and prepared to act
[542]
if you ever find yourself in an active shooter event.
[557]
Know your surroundings.
[560]
Have a plan in place.
[562]
And remember the three key steps in order to survive.
[566]
AVOID
[567]
DENY
[568]
DEFEND
[574]
[police sirens]
