You Don't Need to Own a Car (If You Don't Drive to Work) - YouTube
Channel: Not Just Bikes
[5]
for about the last 20 years my wife and
[7]
i have had a pretty simple rule
[9]
if we don't need to drive to work we
[11]
don't need to own a car
[13]
this was pretty easy when we lived in
[14]
central london because the public
[16]
transit system was so exceptional
[18]
but in other cities like toronto public
[21]
transit and cycling could only take us
[22]
so far
[23]
because the few walkable parts of
[25]
toronto are surrounded by a sprawling
[27]
suburban wasteland that is only
[28]
accessible by car
[30]
and of course we also needed a car
[32]
because intercity passenger trains suck
[34]
so much in canada
[36]
so in a city that's designed incorrectly
[38]
a car will sometimes be necessary and
[41]
for that we would rely on car sharing
[44]
in my experience people don't understand
[47]
just how easy car share programs have
[49]
become
[50]
you literally open the app choose a car
[52]
and you can be driving in less than five
[54]
minutes
[55]
it's so easy it's ridiculous but i'll
[58]
talk about that in more detail
[59]
later in this video when talking about
[63]
car share
[63]
most people seem to think it's like a
[65]
rental car and they associate it with
[67]
the horrible experience of renting a car
[69]
while on vacation
[70]
and let's face it renting a car sucks
[74]
you have to book it in advance you
[75]
usually have to physically go to the
[77]
rental car agency
[78]
and when you get there you'll end up
[80]
waiting in line just so you can go talk
[81]
to some person who will type in all of
[83]
your information into a computer
[85]
even though you already did it online
[88]
and then
[88]
they'll tell you they don't actually
[90]
have the car you reserved but they'll
[91]
provide you with a
[92]
free upgrade to a crappy suv that
[95]
consumes twice as much gas
[98]
so when people think about not owning a
[99]
car they usually think about this rental
[101]
car process and how painful it is
[103]
but that's not the way modern car share
[105]
works
[108]
car sharing has been around for a long
[109]
time possibly as far back as the 1940s
[112]
there was even an all-electric car
[114]
sharing service called vitkar
[116]
that was launched in amsterdam in 1974.
[120]
talk about being ahead of their time
[124]
we signed up for our first car share
[126]
service in 2003 when
[128]
we joined auto share in toronto back
[130]
then the service was really basic
[132]
we were given a key to a lock box that
[134]
contained the keys to a car and we
[136]
booked our time slots using a 1990s
[138]
style website
[140]
keeping track of mileage and fuel was
[142]
entirely paper-based but the concept
[144]
worked well enough
[146]
these days however all car share systems
[148]
are app-based and you can do everything
[150]
from booking a car
[152]
to unlocking the doors all from your
[154]
smartphone
[156]
today there are many different car share
[158]
programs available but generally they
[160]
can be classified into two groups
[162]
what i'm calling fixed and free floating
[165]
they both have their own advantages and
[167]
disadvantages so we maintain memberships
[169]
with several different services
[173]
the oldest type of car sharing program
[175]
is the fixed kind and our service in
[177]
toronto is like this
[179]
this is where cars are parked throughout
[180]
the city in fixed locations
[183]
with this kind of design you start to
[185]
get used to where cars are in your
[186]
neighborhood and what kind of cars are
[188]
available
[189]
after a while we started to settle into
[191]
using our favorite cars and admittedly
[193]
it was nice to get a familiar car that
[195]
always remembered our bluetooth
[196]
connections
[198]
in a fixed car share system you
[200]
typically need to book your time slot in
[202]
advance and you have to return it back
[203]
to the place where you picked it up
[206]
this makes it difficult to use a car
[207]
spontaneously but it has the benefit of
[209]
ensuring that your car is always there
[211]
when you've booked it so in this sense
[214]
they're like traditional rental cars but
[216]
with many more locations and you never
[218]
need to wait in line or speak to an
[220]
employee to get your car
[223]
a big benefit of fixed car share is that
[225]
they typically have lots of different
[227]
kinds of cars and vans
[228]
so you can take whichever vehicle you
[230]
need for the trip you're taking
[232]
when people used to ask us what kind of
[234]
car we owned we used to joke that we had
[236]
a fleet of them
[237]
and this is ridiculously useful
[241]
if i was just driving somewhere by
[242]
myself or with a few other people i
[244]
would get a small fuel-efficient car
[246]
that's cheap and easy to drive
[248]
but if i had to go buy a sheet of
[250]
plywood or move a bunch of large items i
[252]
could get a cargo van like this one
[254]
that fits everything perfectly it always
[257]
made me laugh while
[258]
easily loading my car share cargo van
[260]
outside of the hardware store and seeing
[262]
other people in the parking lot trying
[263]
to squeeze a bunch of oversized stuff
[265]
into their crappy suv that holds way
[267]
less than they think it does
[269]
so here they are driving around in this
[270]
bloated piece of garbage vehicle for
[272]
every trip everywhere they go and the
[275]
one time they actually need it
[277]
it's not big enough car share solves
[280]
that problem
[281]
so even when we owned our own cars we
[283]
still kept our car share service active
[285]
to maintain access to the fleet of cars
[287]
and fans when we needed them
[289]
so car share doesn't just let people go
[290]
car free it also lets two car households
[293]
become single car households and it
[295]
makes it easier for people to buy
[296]
smaller cheaper vehicles too
[300]
the other type of car share service is
[301]
what i call the free floating kind and
[303]
it seems to be the way that most new
[305]
app-based car share services work
[309]
free-floating car share means that cars
[311]
can be parked almost anywhere
[313]
you don't need to book them in advance
[314]
and you can return them wherever it's
[316]
convenient
[317]
these systems are ideal for spontaneous
[320]
trips and they allow you to take one-way
[322]
trips as well
[324]
instead of being like a rental car
[326]
they're more like a taxi that you drive
[327]
yourself
[328]
except way cheaper for example a few
[331]
months ago i took a one-way trip with my
[333]
kids within the city and the bill came
[335]
out to 2 euros and 10 cents yeah
[338]
i had to drive myself but i've never
[340]
paid that little for a taxi
[341]
in a developed nation now of course
[345]
not all trips are necessarily that short
[347]
and cheap but from our car share
[349]
experience we found it best not to think
[351]
too much about the
[352]
individual cost of a trip rather just
[354]
think about the monthly cost
[356]
compared to owning your own car sure it
[358]
might have cost us say
[359]
15 to go to the big grocery store in the
[362]
suburbs which is a lot for a single trip
[365]
but when we get the bill at the end of
[366]
the month we'd usually find that all of
[368]
our trips combined added up to less than
[370]
100 bucks
[371]
and that includes everything the car the
[374]
fuel
[374]
the insurance the cleaning the
[376]
maintenance even the windshield wiper
[378]
fluid
[380]
so we had access to a car whenever we
[381]
needed it but it cost us less than just
[383]
the insurance did
[384]
when we used to have our own vehicle
[388]
and yeah owning your own car can be a
[390]
great convenience but it can also be a
[392]
massive hassle too when i've owned cars
[394]
there were several times where i had
[396]
problems with them and it was my job to
[398]
get them fixed
[399]
for example the time my car's computer
[401]
malfunctioned and all my plans were
[403]
ruined while i spent the day waiting for
[404]
a tow truck
[405]
and for the mechanic to fix it and i was
[407]
at about 600 bucks by the end of the day
[409]
as well
[411]
car share cars are reliable and they're
[413]
well maintained
[414]
because it's in the company's best
[415]
interest to keep them in service
[417]
in 18 years and hundreds of car share
[420]
rides i've only had a problem once
[422]
and when that happened i called their
[424]
hotline they booked me another car
[425]
nearby and i just
[427]
left the broken car at the side of the
[428]
road for them to deal with
[430]
they even gave me a discount on my
[431]
rental for the trouble that's great
[435]
it's also nice not to have to worry
[436]
about getting my car damaged or having
[438]
to deal with insurance
[439]
or having my car broken into which has
[441]
happened to me
[443]
car sharing gives you access to a car
[444]
but it removes all of the stress
[446]
hassle and expense of owning your own
[448]
vehicle
[450]
every car share system we've used has
[452]
per minute rates
[453]
but they sometimes have discounts for
[455]
longer trips weekends
[456]
and multi-day trips as well for example
[459]
it's common to have a maximum rate of
[461]
say
[462]
five to eight hours per day and after
[464]
that you pay the 24 hour rate
[466]
so if we were planning a road trip we'd
[468]
usually pick up the car the night before
[469]
and park it right in front of our house
[471]
so it was ready to go the next morning
[473]
at no extra cost
[475]
for example one of the times we lived in
[477]
toronto our family used to drive to go
[479]
skiing every sunday in the winter
[481]
the daily rate at the time was 85 so our
[484]
car cost for those winter months was 340
[486]
dollars for four days of skiing
[489]
but of course other months of the year
[490]
we might not use it at all so then we'd
[492]
pay nothing
[495]
the average car spends 96 of its time
[497]
parked
[498]
but you're still paying for it to sit
[500]
there i like the idea that when i'm not
[502]
using the car
[503]
i'm not paying for it and i'm not
[505]
worrying about it either
[507]
that's a level of freedom you just don't
[509]
get with car ownership
[512]
you really have to be using a car more
[514]
than every single weekend
[515]
every week of the year before car share
[517]
comes anywhere close to the cost of
[519]
owning your own vehicle
[521]
which is why we had our policy if we
[523]
didn't need to drive to work
[524]
we didn't need to own a car even when we
[527]
had two kids
[528]
and we saved a hell of a lot of money
[530]
doing so
[532]
here in amsterdam we have a lot of
[534]
different car share services available
[536]
to us
[537]
all of this choice has given us the
[538]
luxury of being able to only use car
[540]
share programs that have electric
[542]
vehicles
[542]
because i generally think it's impolite
[544]
to give little kids asthma when i'm
[546]
going somewhere
[548]
the way these systems work is pretty
[550]
similar and they're generally the same
[551]
in other cities as well
[553]
so here's what a typical trip looks like
[555]
on a modern free-floating car share
[557]
service
[559]
first you open the app and you're
[561]
presented with a map of cars nearby
[564]
there are usually several cars within a
[565]
short walk but there have been a few
[567]
busy times that i've had to take a quick
[568]
bike ride out to pick up my preferred
[570]
car
[571]
some services only use one or two models
[573]
of car especially those that are owned
[575]
by a specific car
[576]
company other services have several
[579]
different makes and models and i've
[580]
enjoyed trying out every type of car
[582]
available
[584]
i can confidently say that the nissan
[585]
leaf is my favorite electric car
[588]
you select the car you want in the app
[590]
and it's reserved for 15 minutes giving
[592]
you enough time to get to the car
[594]
when you get to your car you take a
[596]
quick look around and check for any
[597]
damage
[599]
new damage can be reported in the app
[601]
you can also use the app to let them
[603]
know if the car
[604]
is dirty in my experience car share cars
[606]
are almost always clean
[608]
because people don't want to get charged
[609]
for leaving it dirty and the car share
[611]
company professionally cleans their cars
[613]
on a regular basis
[615]
you unlock the doors from the app
[618]
depending on the model of car you may
[619]
need to get the keys out of the glove
[620]
box but for most electric cars you never
[622]
need the keys because the app has
[624]
already unlocked it you just need to
[625]
press the start button
[628]
then you adjust the seat and mirrors
[630]
turn off whatever terrible radio station
[632]
the person before you is listening to
[634]
and that's it the whole process takes no
[637]
more than a minute or two and you're
[638]
ready to drive
[640]
you can take the car for as long as you
[641]
want and you can park it as necessary
[644]
the car share company will provide a
[646]
fuel card or fob to pay for any fuel or
[648]
electricity that you use
[650]
here in the netherlands there are public
[651]
car charging stations almost everywhere
[653]
and they work just by tapping a fob to
[655]
the charger
[657]
driving an electric car in the
[658]
netherlands is great but i'll talk about
[660]
that in more detail
[661]
in a future video we've often had car
[665]
chargers at our campgrounds or hotels
[667]
and as long as we've used the fob the
[668]
electricity is included in the cost of
[670]
the car share which is nice
[672]
the car share service gives you a credit
[674]
if you return the car with more fuel or
[676]
battery than when you picked it up so i
[678]
usually plug it in near my destination
[679]
when i return it
[682]
having a free-floating car share service
[684]
available is really useful
[686]
i can drive out to the pub and then take
[687]
a taxi or public transit home after
[689]
drinking
[690]
i can walk or take public transit to a
[692]
shop and then get a car to carry my
[694]
heavy purchases home
[695]
if i end up buying something as you can
[699]
tell
[699]
i'm a really big fan of car share
[700]
services and they've only become better
[702]
over the years
[703]
they allow us to live in a walkable
[705]
urban environment and save a lot of
[707]
money on transportation
[708]
while still having access to a car or
[710]
cargo van when we need it
[712]
i don't ever plan on owning a car again
[714]
because i find them more trouble than
[716]
they're worth
[717]
and here in amsterdam a properly
[719]
designed city a car is rarely the best
[721]
way to get around
[723]
plus nearly the whole country is
[724]
accessible with a combination of bicycle
[726]
plus train
[728]
but it's nice to know in those rare
[730]
times when i do need one or want to
[732]
drive one
[732]
i still have a car available in fact i
[735]
have a whole fleet of them
[738]
i'd like to thank my supporters on
[740]
