Americans are flocking to ‘low-income tax states’: Dave Ramsey - YouTube
Channel: Fox Business
[0]
and many of them don't know where to
[1]
start so let's bring them some answers
[3]
here now is dave ramsey a radio host and
[6]
author of baby steps millionaires uh
[8]
dave thanks for joining me i have a
[10]
question i want to ask you from one of
[11]
our viewers it's julia h and she writes
[14]
i'm preparing for retirement in one and
[15]
a half years i'm thinking of moving out
[17]
of california and looking at tennessee
[19]
or south carolina is there a
[21]
questionnaire or checklist to identify
[22]
the best strategies to maximize taxes
[25]
and stretch funds to live a good life i
[27]
don't know if i should sell or rent my
[29]
california home how do i draw my funds
[31]
in retirement
[33]
so dave what advice do you have
[35]
for our viewer
[37]
well she's got a lot going on i live in
[39]
tennessee and we've got a lot of
[40]
california refugees have moved in
[44]
to trying to get their lives back so
[46]
anytime you move away from a state for
[48]
whatever reason always sell your home so
[51]
she's going to sell that california home
[53]
and she's going to move to south
[54]
carolina or to tennessee
[56]
both of those states have no income tax
[58]
and so her tax situation is going to
[60]
change pretty dramatically
[62]
as far as drawing down on her retirement
[64]
accounts we don't have much information
[65]
from this particular email so sit down
[67]
with your financial advisor if you're 70
[70]
and a half there's a required minimum
[72]
distribution that begins on a standard
[74]
401 k or traditional ira but you can
[76]
look at the nest egg you have and set it
[79]
up your budget to where you live off of
[80]
the golden eggs that the goose is
[83]
producing and that's what you're going
[84]
to want to set up so dave just thinking
[86]
about you know your finances is it smart
[89]
to get out of one of these high tax
[90]
states and get to a low tax no tax date
[93]
well based on the population movement
[95]
apparently it is
[97]
we're seeing a tremendous move out of
[100]
california and out of new york and most
[103]
of them are moving to texas tennessee
[104]
florida uh alabama these types of states
[107]
where there is no income tax and where
[110]
also where the reaction to covid was
[113]
much more free and open and it wasn't as
[116]
draconian and so i i think that has been
[118]
the
[119]
it's causing it's called a whole
[120]
population shift in the united states
[122]
well dave if you're in a no tax state
[124]
maybe i'll take that as good advice
[125]
maybe i should get to a no tax state
[126]
myself but dave i want to bring back in
[128]
our panel we have uh sandra john and
[130]
michelle and dave i know you've been
[132]
listening to their stories and uh do you
[134]
have any advice for them in what you
[136]
heard from our conversation
[138]
well i mean sandra you guys are both
[141]
veterans uh thank you for your service
[144]
we appreciate it and and as an american
[146]
i wish we were paying you enough for
[148]
that you didn't have to deal with all
[149]
this you served your country and your
[151]
retirement should have taken care of
[153]
that and i i'm kind of ashamed that we
[155]
haven't done a better job for you after
[157]
what you've done so uh the the thing for
[159]
all three of you is and i learned this
[161]
when i went broke years ago and i've
[163]
taught people this all over america is
[165]
when you do a written budget and you
[167]
make every dollar behave
[170]
you it goes to the most important things
[172]
you prioritize and you know when the
[175]
inflation is squeezing some of the
[176]
dollars out you're going to end up
[178]
squeezing out some of the luxury items
[180]
or or things that aren't pure
[181]
necessities
[183]
and so you you know you're already doing
[184]
that you're shopping carefully at the
[186]
grocery store you're limiting your
[187]
drives and so forth and uh you know
[190]
michelle i mean where you're down to
[191]
noodles and no meat um that one broke my
[194]
heart hearing that you single moms or
[196]
warriors in our culture you're a warrior
[198]
princess girl you can do this and um
[201]
i i know in the notes that i got that
[203]
there's an extra car involved and an
[206]
extra car for teenagers is a luxury
[209]
and uh when you're when you're heating
[211]
up noodles with butter you're not in
[212]
luxury zone so you're gonna be selling
[214]
that car uh even if it hurts somebody's
[216]
feelings and i got a feeling that the
[219]
teenagers aren't gonna like dave ramsey
[220]
but that's nothing new so
[222]
but you know
[224]
you're doing all you can do with what
[225]
you got you're working your butt off and
[227]
you're paying attention and our our
[229]
government ought to do a lot better job
[230]
of managing the pump and managing the
[233]
energy independence which would allow
[235]
these gas prices to stay down and the
[236]
white house has frankly done a horrible
[238]
job for you
[239]
and uh so but but you you can't control
[242]
them they're just doing what they're
[243]
doing over there so you can do that do
[245]
the things you can do with what you've
[247]
got and uh you know john and you're
[250]
you've got a situation you've got a lot
[251]
on your plate man a young family you got
[253]
a lot of balls in the air you're doing
[255]
you know mom wife's in grad school
[257]
you're looking to buy a house you're
[259]
trying to do six to three things at once
[261]
and uh you got a lot of real important
[263]
things that you're considering and uh
[266]
what we've had to do with the ramsey
[267]
household and what we've taught people
[269]
to do for years is not try to balance
[272]
all of those things instead prioritize
[274]
them if we could only do one what are we
[276]
going to do
[277]
if we can only do two
[278]
of these things what are we going to do
[280]
and it may mean the house move up
[282]
in-house waits a little while until mom
[284]
finishes grad school it may mean mom's
[286]
grad school waits until we get the house
[289]
i don't care which one you choose but
[290]
you're probably going to choose one over
[292]
the other
[293]
and do them in an order it's not to say
[295]
we're not ever going to do them but
[297]
which ones are first instead of trying
[299]
to do them all at once which means
[300]
absolutely nothing gets done except
[302]
stress
[303]
you know i'm so grateful for the panel
[305]
and sharing their stories and the
[306]
difficulties they're going through right
[308]
now but dave i want to ask you this
[310]
because i find this a bit frustrating
[311]
when you listen to pete buda judge and
[313]
other folks in the administration and
[315]
they talk about rising gas prices their
[317]
answer for that is they say you should
[319]
go buy an electric car
[320]
well we listen to stories of families
[323]
and michelle's going listen i'm almost
[324]
in tears i can't i can barely feed my
[326]
kids and the answer to people is go buy
[328]
an electric car
[329]
um what's yours have you priced an
[331]
electric car
[333]
i mean seriously jojo i mean my goodness
[335]
gracious that's absolutely asinine
[338]
the cost of an electric car and then by
[340]
the way you got to charge the car and
[342]
hello with the electric bill
[344]
and so you know this isn't free
[347]
so here's the thing it was a green
[350]
electric car petroleum hating series of
[353]
policies that have driven the
[356]
oil independence that we did have
[358]
completely off the map and so parts of
[360]
this inflation that we're experiencing
[362]
are not joe biden's fault but 100 of the
[365]
gas thing
[366]
lands on his desk he completely has
[369]
screwed this up
[370]
and it's all in the name of green
[372]
policies or pro uh energy policies or
[375]
anti-petroleum policies and you're going
[377]
to see it other places because guess
[378]
what the street they're putting down in
[380]
front of that new housing it's asphalt
[382]
that's a petroleum product the the
[385]
shingles that you're putting on those
[386]
new houses that we're talking about the
[388]
prices going up on so much that's a
[390]
petroleum product and so you're going to
[393]
see this land in a whole bunch of other
[394]
places and uh the unintended
[396]
consequences of these uh green policies
[400]
without having thought it all the way
[401]
through and are done at least a gradual
[403]
shift instead of just shutting the
[404]
faucet off the supply demand curve is
[406]
just ridiculous you know
[408]
so true dave listen dave thanks for
[410]
giving us advice and sandra john and
[412]
michelle thank you for sharing your
[413]
story we'll be right back thank you
