hayoung get on from technology man calm
[2]
there are two versions of this new
[4]
ultrawide monitor from LG the 29 wk 529
[8]
wk 600 done reviewing here they are both
[11]
29 inch IPS displays with a resolution
[14]
of 2560 by 1080 pixels they both come
[17]
with two HDMI ports but the 600 Varian
[20]
adds a DisplayPort and also has HDR 10
[23]
support for gaming and streaming with
[24]
high dynamic range or HDR Julian triple
[30]
monitor setups have been popular for a
[31]
long time the ultra wide monitors with a
[33]
21 to 9 aspect ratio offer a versatile
[35]
single screen alternative and without
[38]
any screen bezels in the way which is a
[39]
real boon particularly for gaming with
[42]
this 2560 by 1080 pixel screen you're
[44]
not getting as much resolution as even a
[46]
dual Full HD monitor setup but it could
[48]
well be enough I'll cover this in more
[50]
detail shortly it's a simple procedure
[55]
to attach the curse down to the monitor
[57]
the support arm screws in the back with
[59]
two Phillips screws and the stand itself
[60]
is attached for the thumb screw
[62]
the stand has an elegant design the
[64]
matte twines back panel may not be to
[65]
everyone's taste
[66]
but at least the finish doesn't attract
[68]
finger prints The Stand has no height
[70]
adjustment you'll have to move up to the
[72]
34 inch 34 WK 650 for that there is some
[76]
minimal tilt adjustment just 5 degrees
[77]
back and 15 degrees forward if you want
[80]
more adjustment the monitor does have
[81]
standard hundred millimeter by 100
[83]
millimeter better mounting holes for any
[85]
display mount of your choosing I'm
[87]
connecting via the included white HDMI
[89]
cable to an NVIDIA GTX 970 graphics card
[92]
but it's worth checking your computer
[93]
has an HDMI or DisplayPort to connect to
[96]
most recent computers will if it's a
[98]
slightly older desktop computer without
[100]
you could always upgrade with a cheap
[101]
graphics card the monitor uses an
[103]
external power supply which is in fact a
[105]
standard 19 volt 3.4 amp laptop power
[108]
supply so it should be easy to replace
[109]
if the need ever arises
[114]
switching on for the first time the
[116]
display looks impressive there is a one
[118]
centimeter bezel around the screen this
[119]
doesn't detract from the design the
[121]
matte display does a very good job of
[122]
limiting any glare coming in from a
[124]
large window to my side and a bright
[125]
light bulb above the monitor has a very
[128]
easy-to-use OSD or on-screen display
[130]
joystick to navigate through the menu
[131]
system the best I've used although
[133]
initially the only thing you'll probably
[134]
to adjust is the brightness which
[136]
defaults to an Isis training
[137]
hundred-percent to access the menu
[139]
system press the joystick and move right
[141]
to settings there are ten picture modes
[143]
the default custom color mode being the
[146]
only one that allows color calibration
[147]
which I'll discuss shortly it also has
[149]
the most accurate colors so I'd suggest
[150]
leaving it as is in most cases
[153]
unfortunate although the monitor will
[154]
remember your settings in each mode
[155]
there is no way to save them as a preset
[158]
the monitor has audio built-in but don't
[160]
expect too much from the small
[161]
integrated speakers the audio sounds
[164]
quite clear but there's no bass it's
[165]
possible for watching their spoken
[166]
youtube video for example and not much
[168]
else
[169]
[Music]
[179]
the OSD joystick controls the volume
[181]
independent of the windows controls more
[184]
usefully there's also a headphone port
[185]
to attach headphones or some speakers
[187]
much improved sound one of the main
[192]
reasons to get an ultra wide screen is
[193]
for productivity just using the windows
[195]
snap assist feature lets you divide the
[197]
screen in up to four areas
[199]
drag the title bar of a window to the
[200]
left or right of the screen to snap a
[201]
50% size window to either side or use
[204]
the Windows key plus the left or right
[206]
arrow drag to a corner of the screen to
[208]
snap a window to that quadrant of the
[209]
screen or use the Windows key and an up
[212]
or down arrow after snapping to the left
[213]
or right side of the screen with this
[215]
wide aspect display you can comfortably
[217]
work with a side-by-side split a
[219]
document on the left and a web browser
[220]
on the right-hand side for example in
[222]
this case each window will be 1280 by
[225]
1080 pixels which I find enough in most
[227]
cases if you want more control LG
[229]
provide their own screen control
[230]
software which lets you customize your
[232]
display with options for 2 3 & 4 screen
[234]
splits and the picture-in-picture split
[236]
it keeps the window on top for example
[237]
for a YouTube video continue to play in
[239]
the background
[243]
[Music]
[248]
you then drag a window to the predefined
[250]
split area
[253]
[Music]
[264]
you can even configure specific
[266]
applications to load on windows startup
[268]
in a predetermined screens own the LG
[271]
software also allows you to control them
[272]
on - without using its joystick and you
[274]
can configure specific applications to
[276]
use specific picture modes the software
[278]
works very well although the built-in
[280]
snap assist features of windows may well
[282]
be enough and if you want even more
[283]
control of your screen space you could
[285]
use display fusion which provides the
[287]
ultimate windows management controls and
[289]
customization albeit at a cost
[296]
[Music]
[306]
the monitor has an IPS panel which is
[308]
superior to most cheaper TM displays for
[310]
color accuracy and viewing angles
[312]
viewing angles are particularly
[313]
important for widescreen displays like
[314]
this one and in general use and viewing
[316]
test images I did find the viewing
[318]
angles to be very good the maximum
[320]
brightness is quoted as 300 candelas per
[322]
square metre which whilst not as bright
[324]
as some monitors is plenty bright enough
[326]
for a desktop monitor in most cases
[327]
unlike your phone or laptop screen is
[330]
not being used outdoors unless you're in
[332]
a very bright room it's recommended to
[333]
reduce the brightness to around 120 to
[336]
reduce eyestrain on this monitor that's
[338]
around 40% brightness in custom picture
[340]
mode using an x-ray I 1 display Pro
[342]
Monitor calibrator I measured the
[344]
maximum brightness in the default custom
[345]
mode as 265 candelas per square metre
[348]
the brightest picture mode was HDR
[350]
effect which pushed the brightness to
[352]
380 candelas per square meter the
[355]
monitor is also claimed to display 99%
[357]
of the sRGB color space which is a
[359]
spectrum of colors that most devices
[361]
conform to from phones to TVs to
[363]
monitors again using the I 1 display pro
[366]
I calibrated the monitor for the most
[368]
accurate colors possible I achieved a
[370]
value of 97.4% of srgb so close enough
[374]
within the accuracy of my testing and a
[375]
good result more importantly I also
[377]
measured the color accuracy or Delta II
[379]
of the monitor Delta II is a metric for
[381]
understanding how the human eye
[383]
perceives color difference with a value
[384]
of less than one being not perceptible
[386]
to human eye and a value between 1 and 2
[388]
being barely perceptible I measured an
[390]
average Delta ray of not 0.5 2 which is
[392]
very impressive an average del 3 of less
[394]
than 2 is considered very good even the
[396]
maximum Delta II was only 1.5 3 high
[402]
dynamic range is a relatively new
[404]
feature of monitors that expands the
[405]
contrast in colors of the image with the
[407]
intention of providing more realism the
[409]
term comes from photography where
[411]
multiple photos are taken at different
[412]
exposures and combined to create an
[414]
image with an increased dynamic range so
[415]
for a high contrast image of a landscape
[417]
for instance an HDR photo could reveal
[420]
lots of details in the foreground yet
[421]
still have the correct exposure for the
[423]
sky there are various HDR standards
[425]
including HDR 10 Dolby vision and HL g
[427]
with HDR 10 being the most widely
[429]
supported currently this monitor is
[431]
listed as supporting HDR 10 although if
[433]
you look into this more closely it
[434]
appears to support more a subset of the
[436]
HDR 10 standard there is a new display
[438]
compliance now that
[439]
called display HDR from VESA which
[441]
defines minimum criteria for various
[443]
levels of compliance this monitor
[445]
doesn't appear to even meet their
[446]
minimum standard display HDR 400 whether
[449]
this is a real concern for most users is
[451]
not really clear but it's worth
[452]
mentioning to actually experience HDR
[454]
you also need HDR content either HDR
[456]
enabled games or HDR video content there
[459]
aren't that many games that have HDR
[461]
support although I'm sure that will
[462]
change battlefield 1 supports both HDR
[465]
10 and Dolby vision so I was able to try
[467]
it out loading the game automatically
[472]
recognized the HDR capabilities of the
[474]
monitor and the monitor OSD showed HDR
[477]
it's then possible to choose one of four
[479]
HDR picture modes with a default being
[481]
HDR vivid the game doesn't look really
[483]
good with incredibly vibrant colors
[485]
perhaps too vibrant for a game like
[486]
Battlefield 1 but impressive nonetheless
[489]
playing HDR content within Windows is
[491]
more complex firstly you need to enable
[493]
HDR mode in Windows from settings
[495]
display and switching on HDR and WCG
[498]
you'll again see the monitor
[500]
OSD display HDR since most content
[503]
you'll be viewing will still be standard
[505]
dynamic range SDR and may look a little
[506]
dark you can adjust the brightness vesti
[509]
our content slider under HDR and WCG
[511]
settings I had an issue with the Google
[514]
Chrome browser looking dark and gray
[516]
which I fixed by turning off hardware
[517]
acceleration under settings in Chrome I
[519]
thought this was an issue with my NVIDIA
[521]
GTX 970 graphics card but I also try
[524]
over in another computer which hadn't
[525]
aimed the RX 470 and again had to turn
[528]
off hardware acceleration this issue
[530]
does highlight how HDR support is still
[532]
in its infancy within Windows the
[534]
easiest way to view some HDR footage is
[536]
in YouTube it's mostly demo Clips but
[538]
the HDR channel has barrister ocean all
[540]
clips and when it's all working they do
[542]
look very vibrant almost jumping out of
[543]
the screen at you YouTube will
[545]
automatically switch the HDR version of
[547]
the clip which you can see under the
[549]
quality settings the Ionian got this to
[551]
work in Chrome
[552]
Microsoft edge wouldn't play the HDR
[554]
versions with both the GTX 970 and the
[557]
iOS 470 enabling stream HDR video in
[560]
settings HDR and WCG setting video
[563]
playback settings didn't help
[565]
Amazon Prime or Netflix both have HDR
[567]
content but neither will work on my
[569]
setup at least
[570]
Amazon primates jar content is only
[572]
available in a very limited supported
[574]
hardware list and Netflix has a help
[576]
article hidden away the states you'll
[577]
need at least the latest generation
[579]
NVIDIA GTX 1050 or above the screen
[582]
rapids card or a very recent seventh
[584]
generation Intel i3 i5 or i7 processor
[587]
if the situation improves and you want
[589]
to switch to Windows 10 HDR mode I'd
[591]
recommend disabling any color profiles
[593]
you may have enabled and also changing
[595]
the picture mode to HDR standard for
[597]
best results I only dabble in gaming but
[602]
for games that support the twenty one to
[603]
nine format this monitor is very
[604]
immersive the resolution jump from 2560
[607]
by 1080 from Full HD is not a big
[609]
challenge for most graphics cards which
[611]
also means you shouldn't even upgrade
[612]
for games that already play smoothly at
[614]
a low resolution I did feel a little
[616]
sick playing very fast FPS games like
[618]
doom
[618]
I'd recommend paying close attention to
[620]
the field of view options and increasing
[622]
the angle slightly to value that suits
[623]
you if you're into cycling and have ever
[625]
tried the virtual cycling games whiffed
[627]
the extra screen space is also very
[629]
welcome it looks less cluttered and also
[631]
provides more immersion the monitor
[633]
supports free sync which only works with
[634]
AMD graphics cards the reduces any
[636]
screen tearing and stuttering in game
[638]
where the graphics card can't keep up
[640]
the refresh rate of the monitor it only
[642]
operates from 40 Hertz to the monitors
[644]
maximum refresh rate of 75 Hertz which
[646]
makes it a little limited my main gaming
[649]
computer has an Nvidia card got to try
[651]
the feature out with my children's
[652]
gaming PC that has named the RX 470 I
[655]
can't say I really noticed a huge
[657]
difference in the games I've tried but
[659]
it's a nice feature to have nonetheless
[660]
if you already own AMD graphics card
[664]
there are some huge benefits of an
[666]
ultra-wide monitor mainly for
[668]
productivity but also for gaming the LG
[670]
29 wk 600 monitor represents a very good
[673]
value proposition with excellent color
[674]
accuracy good connectivity generally
[677]
useful screen organization software and
[678]
a clean elegant design slightly cheaper
[681]
LG 29 WK 500 doesn't have the HDR to
[685]
support and loses a display port
[687]
connection it is probably the better
[689]
option unless the prices are very close
[691]
HDR support particularly in Windows has
[693]
a long way to go but dust future-proof
[695]
the monitor somewhat and games that
[697]
support it do look impressive overall
[699]
I've not hesitate to the recommend ether
[701]
monitor I hope you found the video
[703]
useful please do like and subscribe if
[705]
you did and take a look at the
[706]
technology mancom for the written review
[708]
which includes a summary the pros and
[710]
cons and the monitor thanks for watching
