[6]
to understand how this phone became one
[9]
of the most
[10]
popular of all time it helps to remember
[12]
that not
[13]
too long before its debut mobile phones
[16]
were basically
[17]
bricks with antennas so when the
[20]
motorola star tack hit the scene
[22]
25 years ago with a footprint smaller
[24]
than an audio cassette
[25]
and a design straight out of star trek
[28]
it upended
[29]
the entire industry from clip-on
[32]
accessories to
[33]
unauthorized sequels to lawsuit spawning
[35]
knockoffs to branded companion products
[37]
to bizarre revivals as late as the
[39]
mid-aughts
[40]
it's no exaggeration to say that the
[43]
star tac
[44]
launched the era of the fun phone
[46]
[Music]
[52]
now i sourced a lot of startax for this
[54]
video
[55]
but this model 7868w for verizon
[59]
it's a family original yeah this one
[62]
belonged to my brother
[63]
the eponymous blakester from about 2000
[66]
to 2002
[67]
and despite being over two decades old
[70]
it's in remarkably good shape
[72]
part of motorola's value proposition at
[74]
the time was durability
[75]
this was the same period it was building
[77]
phones for nextel users who
[78]
weren't above using their phones as
[80]
hammers so motorola made the star tac
[82]
from the same
[83]
tough plastic that doesn't damage easily
[86]
and
[86]
hides it well when it does and unlike
[88]
today where it sometimes seems companies
[90]
will take any excuse to omit options
[93]
the startac retained many standard
[95]
features of its time
[97]
the battery built into the flip was
[98]
removable came in several sizes
[100]
and depending on model was one of the
[102]
first lithium ion power packs to be used
[105]
in mobile phones
[106]
the 2.5 millimeter earphone jack was
[108]
standard for an era when
[109]
bands on driving while talking were just
[112]
starting to hit the books
[113]
the antenna extended for ideal reception
[116]
and to tell you whether or not you had
[118]
cellular coverage
[119]
you had a service led that flashed green
[121]
for service yellow for roaming
[123]
red for none fun fact the tack in the
[126]
name stands for total area coverage
[129]
an acronym that goes all the way back to
[130]
the dine attack of 1984.
[133]
oh and while the ringtones are typical
[135]
of the late 90s
[136]
aka soul piercingly terrible
[141]
the star tech was the first cell phone
[143]
to give you an alternative
[145]
yep you know vibrate mode well you can
[147]
thank motorola for being the first
[149]
company to bring it from pagers
[151]
to cell phones
[152]
[Music]
[154]
when you cram all those features into a
[156]
package that even today
[158]
seems remarkably compact well it's
[160]
basically a license to print money
[162]
the first star tech launched at an
[164]
eye-watering 1 000 us dollars
[166]
despite being an analog only phone that
[168]
could only handle voice calls
[170]
now within about a year prices came down
[172]
as carrier partnerships were signed
[174]
around the globe
[175]
resulting in over 60 million star tax
[178]
being sold over the next few years as
[180]
digital variations hit the market my
[182]
brother's 7868
[184]
was one of the cdma versions for
[185]
carriers like verizon
[187]
but much more interesting to me are
[189]
these anomalies
[191]
from across the sea now these are two
[194]
different takes on the
[195]
rainbow star tac model which i teased in
[197]
the intro as an
[198]
unauthorized variant because at first
[201]
motorola did not want it made
[205]
this story comes to me from ben wood
[207]
over at the mobile phone museum
[208]
apparently in 1996 motorola's european
[211]
team
[212]
had two things a bunch of leftover
[214]
plastic from a colorful phone called the
[216]
motorola flare
[217]
and inspiration in the form of
[220]
volkswagen's limited-run harlequin from
[222]
the same year
[223]
the story goes that the european
[224]
motorolans asked chicago headquarters
[226]
if they could use that surplus plastic
[228]
to make a phone with this colorway
[231]
and when headquarters denied that
[233]
permission
[234]
well the european team took the admiral
[236]
kirk approach
[238]
the word sir the words is no
[241]
i am therefore going anyway yep the
[244]
folks at motorola's easter inch plant
[245]
and scotland
[246]
made it anyway despite the fact that it
[248]
was more difficult to build because the
[250]
different colored plastics had different
[251]
durability characteristics
[253]
that's why only one color configuration
[255]
was offered and only
[257]
on the cheaper startac 70 with its
[259]
inferior display and lighter weight
[261]
build quality
[263]
nevertheless it was eventually
[264]
authorized and motorola would go on to
[266]
sell between
[267]
70 000 and 125 000 units
[270]
all during the summer in which it was
[272]
released
[273]
so why does it appear as though i have
[275]
both a rainbow star tax 70
[277]
and a rainbow star tac 130
[280]
because this one is counterfeit
[283]
[Music]
[286]
yep the star tac legend is so widely
[288]
worshipped even a quarter century later
[290]
that a robust market exists
[292]
for fake star tax of which this is one
[296]
that's also true of other vintage brands
[298]
such as the razer by the by so
[300]
as always i urge you to be vigilant when
[302]
shopping for mobile artifacts like this
[305]
that same appetite for all things star
[307]
tac drove an absolute
[308]
avalanche of accessories and branded
[310]
tie-ins when the phone was still on
[312]
shelves
[313]
i'll show you those plus a knock-off so
[315]
similar that motorola
[316]
sued qualcomm over it after a word from
[319]
my sponsor
[322]
i'm not traveling as much as i have in
[324]
years past but i'm still using today's
[326]
sponsor just as often while surfsharkvpn
[329]
is great for
[330]
safely browsing on a public hotspot it's
[332]
also a powerful tool for preserving your
[334]
privacy
[335]
at home look i make my living thanks to
[338]
the advertising that goes alongside my
[339]
content
[340]
but some ads come with an uninvited
[342]
guest malicious software
[344]
surfshark helps fight that malware and
[346]
also hides your ip address
[348]
which makes it tougher for bad actors to
[350]
target you
[351]
if you think your internet service
[352]
provider might be throttling your speeds
[354]
based on usage surfshark can help level
[356]
the playing field
[357]
and it works on your computer tablet and
[359]
your phone
[361]
try surfshark now at the link below and
[363]
use promo code mr mobile
[365]

[368]

surfshark for sponsoring this video
[374]
[Music]
[377]
okay to understand this accessory you
[379]
need to understand the limitations of
[380]
even late model star tax like my
[382]
brothers
[383]
sure you can customize the banner text
[385]
even connect to the internet through a
[386]
tiny browser
[388]
but for calendars reminders even a
[390]
humble note-taking app
[391]
no way you're out of luck see in the
[393]
early 2000s if you needed that kind of
[395]
functionality
[396]
well you typically carried a pda like a
[398]
palm pilot
[399]
motorola couldn't fit that kind of
[401]
functionality into the phone
[402]
but sensing an opportunity it built a
[405]
pda of its own
[406]
that plugged into the startx accessory
[408]
port and ran on two big coin cell
[411]
batteries
[412]
with the clip-on organizer you could
[413]
manage a calendar keep a to-do list and
[415]
store a thousand
[416]
contacts even dial them directly from
[420]
the organizer
[421]
sure typing without a touch screen was
[423]
an exercise in frustration
[425]
but it came with desktop software
[427]
interactive cd-rom
[429]
so you could do all that work on a
[431]
windows 95 pc
[433]
there's not much more to this thing i
[435]
just love how motorola's approach to
[437]
this early phase of smartphone
[439]
development was to literally build a pda
[441]
that you could clip to the back of the
[443]
phone
[444]
it's perfect other companies got in on
[447]
the fun in
[448]
weirder ways star tac passion on
[451]
instagram sent over a pair of star tac
[453]
calculators which i guess were sold as
[456]
novelty items
[457]
of course everyone and their brother got
[459]
into the belt clip and case game
[460]
a particularly shameful period in mobile
[463]
phone fashion
[464]
folded over a piece of leather stuck
[465]
together with this elastic
[467]
mid band so it could expand then these
[469]
would get like kind of instantly ratty
[471]
and dusty and stuff and
[473]
they didn't hold their shape when they
[474]
were oh
[476]
god i there's just nothing that would
[479]
instantly cheapen a phone back in the
[481]
day
[481]
as putting it in one of these crappy
[484]
cases
[485]
even this is brand new this is brand new
[487]
and it's already just
[489]
malformed misshapen lump
[492]
let's get rid of this
[496]
and on the higher end apparently fossil
[499]
group
[499]
licensed the startac brand for a special
[502]
edition
[503]
wrist watch it doesn't do anything
[505]
special it's literally just a watch
[507]
dressing up as a phone
[508]
and it's possible it never went on sale
[510]
and was only issued to motorola
[512]
employees
[513]
but it's just one of scores of examples
[515]
demonstrating
[516]
the pervasiveness of the startac brand
[518]
at the time
[520]
and in a true snake eating its own tail
[522]
kind of thing
[523]
i probably don't need to remind you that
[525]
the star tac was the first phone to come
[526]
close to replicating the flip top
[528]
communicator from the original star trek
[530]
series of the 60s
[531]
but you probably didn't know this when
[533]
the props department had to devise a new
[536]
communicator for star trek enterprise
[538]
the then newest star trek spin-off in
[540]
2001
[541]
the signal and battery graphics on that
[544]
communicator
[545]
were copied directly from the motorola
[547]
time port
[548]
the startech's close cousin it's a
[551]
wonderful case of art
[552]
imitating life imitating art
[557]
now one company that was acutely aware
[559]
of the power of the star tac was
[561]
qualcomm yep the very same company that
[564]
makes
[565]
millions of snapdragon chips powering
[567]
modern smartphones all over the world
[569]
at one time made mobile phones itself
[571]
and
[573]
this was one of them eventually i'd love
[576]
to do an entire episode on the q
[577]
phone which was basically a showcase for
[580]
qualcomm's cdma technology that powered
[582]
sprint and verizon's networks
[583]
but for today the key takeaway is that
[586]
the q phone
[587]
looked a lot like the star tac so much
[589]
so that motorola
[590]
sued qualcomm over it calling the design
[593]
quote an
[594]
intentional effort to copy the design
[596]
and to confuse consumers
[598]
unquote this spawned a series of
[600]
additional suits and countersuits
[602]
and at pretty much every stage it was
[604]
qualcomm that prevailed
[606]
with judge napoleon jones dope name by
[608]
the way ruling essentially that the
[610]
phones
[610]
were different enough and that motorola
[613]
was not entitled to a monopoly on the
[614]
clamshell form factor
[616]
considering my own long history with
[618]
excellent clamshells from other
[620]
manufacturers
[621]
i gotta say i'm pretty glad this went
[623]
the way it did
[625]
the startax white hot glow would
[627]
eventually fade but that decline was
[629]
reluctant and prolonged with motorola
[632]
authorizing
[632]
two spin-offs for the korean market this
[635]
one from 2004
[636]
and another as late as 2007. yeah the
[639]
same year the first iphone came out
[643]
today it's an archaic callback too old
[646]
even to be legally activated on a
[647]
wireless network
[649]
utterly unusable in a text and data
[651]
first world
[652]
but 25 years ago it's no exaggeration to
[655]
say that the star tac
[657]
changed the nature of the mobile phone
[660]
i was able to speak with motorola
[662]
engineer glenn schultz whose first big
[664]
project
[665]
at the company was the star tac and
[668]
the thing that he told me that stuck out
[671]
was that on his first day
[672]
he was placed with a mentor at motorola
[675]
who kind of pulled him aside and said
[676]
look
[677]
if you remember one thing remember this
[680]
nothing we do here is easy everything
[684]
is hard and personally i think a big
[686]
part of the reason motorola continues to
[689]
endure
[689]
in a very competitive market despite
[692]
multiple takeovers
[693]
is that it keeps doing the work despite
[696]
the work being
[697]
incredibly difficult like cramming a
[700]
folding screen into a rebooted razor for
[702]
the 2020s
[704]
that's one of the things that cements a
[706]
legacy
[707]
being the kind of company that then and
[709]
now
[710]
keeps phones fun
[716]
special thanks to ben wood of the mobile
[718]
phone museum mobilephonemuseum.com
[720]
and also to david chow the blakester
[722]
startechpassion on instagram who sold me
[724]
a ton of this stuff
[725]
and motorola which arranged that
[727]
interview with mr schultz
[729]
as always motorola had no editorial
[731]
input into or early preview of this
[732]
content
[733]
and provided no payment in exchange for
[735]
its production
[736]
hey if you owned a star tack share your
[738]
memories down in the comments i'd love
[740]
to hear them
[741]
until next time thanks for watching and
[743]
remember to stay safe and mask up when
[745]
you're around others
[746]
as you stay mobile my friends
