Jeff Bezos says work-life balance is a 'debilitating phrase - view career and lives as a 'circle.' - YouTube

[0]
all right so this morning while i was walking聽 around at walmart on a major holiday there was聽聽
[4]
something that was really lacking in the聽 store and that was employees and customers聽聽
[10]
it looked like it was any other day when you聽 walked around in that store and as soon as i聽聽
[15]
got home i opened up the yahoo news and i saw this聽 our bald angel of mercy jeff bezos says work life聽聽
[24]
balance is a deli debilitating phrase he聽 wants amazon workers to view their careers聽聽
[31]
and lives as a circle it's very easy to say that聽 when your whole head looks like a circle when you聽聽
[38]
look like a bald reptilian shapeshifter from the聽 planet zargon uh it's easy to say crazy things but聽聽
[46]
the reality is that even the walmart employee that聽 i talked to today that uh was there by yourself聽聽
[52]
for the most part i asked her it's like why do you聽 work here and she's like i don't want to work here聽聽
[57]
so when you think of debilitating phrase uh聽 i don't think that even begins to cover it聽聽
[65]
a debilitating phrase is or a person like聽 jeff bezos who can afford to let's say聽聽
[72]
he doesn't want to work at amazon anymore he can聽 just take his 200 billion dollars and move on聽聽
[79]
i think this is one of the main reasons that jeff聽 bezos retired is the fact that he knew that he was聽聽
[84]
getting close to society hating him so much that聽 there's an application out there with a hundred聽聽
[90]
signatures saying bezos stay in space we don't聽 want you on planet earth with your crazy ideas聽聽
[96]
telling regular people that he thinks you're聽 lazy and not worth paying livable wages and聽聽
[102]
intentionally doesn't give you a raise for聽 three years while you work as a industrial聽聽
[109]
athlete inside of his warehouses or sweatshops or聽 whatever you choose to call these places that have聽聽
[115]
a horrendous turnover rate so i took four talking聽 points uh from this article and we're gonna start聽聽
[123]
with number one a top piece of advice he offers to聽 staff is not to view the two as strict trade-offs聽聽
[131]
now if you're a person that's working in any sort聽 of crap job right if you're making under livable聽聽
[137]
wages and you think that there's some sort of聽 trade-off where your work life doesn't destroy聽聽
[143]
your home life you're living in the twilight聽 zone as a person that had to work in that job i聽聽
[149]
assure you you all start looking like jeff bezos聽 when it comes to your hair the second i started聽聽
[154]
working at walmart my hair started falling out i聽 remember getting there right after college and i聽聽
[159]
would look in the mirror my hair was perfectly聽 black no bald spots six months down the line聽聽
[166]
poor nutrition stress hating my job hating my聽 life i mean literally i just started falling聽聽
[174]
apart i started looking like bezos himself聽 i started having a bald spot my hair started聽聽
[180]
thinning and getting gray and you're like聽 what the hell is happening to me in this place聽聽
[184]
so there's no such thing as a uh a trade-off when聽 you start working in a place and you hate being聽聽
[190]
there every second you hate being there this聽 morning when i asked that walmart worker why聽聽
[194]
she worked there you could just see in her face聽 like are you crazy do you think i want to work聽聽
[199]
in a walmart and you know how humiliating it is聽 to wear a uniform and make minimum wage so this聽聽
[206]
whole idea of there being a strict tradeoff聽 no none of us make livable wages when we work聽聽
[213]
in these places and we are all miserable 100聽 of the time if you meet a minimum wage worker聽聽
[219]
working in retail in a grocery store or any other聽 place and they're smiling they're probably high聽聽
[226]
because there is no way that you can not realize聽 how much your minimum wage job is hurting you聽聽
[232]
you can't afford to eat when you work in a minimum聽 wage job even though you work in a grocery store聽聽
[237]
no matter how many hours you work in that grocery聽 store you are never going to be able to afford to聽聽
[243]
eat well and i mean i have talked to all of聽 the employees around me and they all say the聽聽
[248]
same thing we make crap wages we can't afford to聽 eat and our brains are unhappy that we work here聽聽
[256]
talking point number two instead he sees his聽 personal and professional pursuits as a circle聽聽
[262]
rather than a balancing act okay i can see it聽 being a circle if you're living off the land and聽聽
[269]
you're you know you're massacring a badger and a聽 minx and a beaver if you're poking all of those聽聽
[277]
animals and the circle of life continues where聽 you get to eat and you sell the bee repelled聽聽
[283]
that's a circle of life working in an amazon聽 warehouse when you're being worked to death聽聽
[290]
10 to 12 hours a day for basically no wages聽 there's no circle there maybe he's just looking聽聽
[296]
in the mirror and just saying you know what there聽 needs to be a circle rather than a balancing act聽聽
[302]
maybe he's just looking at his round head聽 because any normal person will tell you聽聽
[307]
that um personal professional pursuits聽 aren't circles when you work at the bottom聽聽
[312]
when you're working in a middle class job maybe聽 you know you get to have flexible hours you can聽聽
[318]
work from home a couple days a week you have聽 a savings account you live in a home you drive聽聽
[324]
a nice car but if you're that dude who's just聽 barely making it having to bare knuckle box hobos聽聽
[332]
at the bus stop every morning because there's聽 more hobos and ordinary people now on the street聽聽
[337]
at least here in downtown tempe the normal people聽 on the bus get outnumbered seven eight nine ten聽聽
[345]
to one to ordinary people just going to their聽 crap jobs so if you think there's any sort of聽聽
[350]
circle there again he's living in a fantasy land聽 where people get to drive their nice cars to a聽聽
[356]
job that they enjoy that just isn't happening for聽 the vast majority of people and has never happened聽聽
[362]
for a very very long time i think maybe back in聽 the 1950s this happened but right now you can聽聽
[367]
walk to every single business within uh side of my聽 house right now and every employee will tell you聽聽
[373]
uh personal pursuits they don't exist you just go聽 and you work as long as you can tolerate that job聽聽
[380]
and then eventually you get fired or you聽 leave because you can't stand it anymore聽聽
[385]
i can only imagine that coming home smelling like聽 french fries from working at mcdonald's every day聽聽
[391]
i would start doing things to your mind like i聽 talk to kaylie all the time and she works in a聽聽
[396]
steak n shake and the first thing she does every聽 night when she gets home regardless of the hour聽聽
[400]
uh that she gets home is she comes home she聽 takes a shower she has to wash off the scum聽聽
[405]
of her minimum wage restaurant job every day聽 she has to scrub off the pain and suffering of聽聽
[413]
smelling like french fries and being told she's聽 stupid by both her management her co-workers the聽聽
[419]
customers i mean it is debilitating isn't even in聽 the same neighborhood of the world that i want to聽聽
[427]
use working in a job that doesn't pay anything聽 you literally start to feel like trash and the聽聽
[433]
more you work there the more you feel like trash聽 there's no balancing act between working in a聽聽
[438]
warehouse in home life you come home and you're聽 angry you come home and you want to hurt something聽聽
[444]
you come home and you want to hurt yourself by聽 drinking yourself into a tizzy because you don't聽聽
[449]
know what else to do you don't want to think about聽 work but you know that the moment you get home聽聽
[455]
you start the timer the the sand in the hourglass聽 is is going down until you have to be right back聽聽
[461]
there it almost sometimes feels like you uh you聽 get home and then you get respawned back into聽聽
[466]
your job i mean this is how bad working for me聽 at walmart was is that sometimes i couldn't even聽聽
[471]
escape working at walmart in my sleep like i聽 would get home i'd eat something and i'd go to聽聽
[476]
sleep and i'd be right back at work inside of聽 my own head it was that nauseating to work that聽聽
[482]
my brain just couldn't grasp the fact that i was聽 home that i was not there anymore is that having聽聽
[488]
walmart dreams was part of everyday life so i聽 imagine that this is something that happens to the聽聽
[492]
warehouse workers working in an amazon warehouse聽 is that they come home they try to relax but in聽聽
[498]
their own mind the second they close their eyes聽 they're right back on on the assembly line hoping聽聽
[502]
that they don't get fired that day they don't get聽 hurt that day or that they you know don't miss聽聽
[508]
when they have to take a pee inside of another聽 plastic bottle that's what's going on inside聽聽
[512]
of your head you just can't get away from it and聽 i've been there you know where your work becomes聽聽
[519]
a disease in your life that's constantly hurting聽 you even when you're not there talking point聽聽
[524]
number three instead bezos envisions a more聽 holistic relationship between work and life聽聽
[531]
outside of the office now let's see you get to聽 leave the office and you go home to a mansion聽聽
[537]
that's jeff bezos life the average person leaves聽 the warehouse and goes home to a roach filled uh聽聽
[545]
environment that that's full of people you hate聽 all the way around and you can hear the people聽聽
[550]
moving around in the walls because these places聽 are so small this is where poor people get to live聽聽
[556]
and again these aren't nice homes and the rent is聽 extremely high so if you're considering thinking聽聽
[563]
of a holistic relationship between work and聽 life sure that's nice to think about when聽聽
[569]
you get to do things like go on vacation travel聽 in your private jet in which there are no hobos聽聽
[576]
because my private jet is the city bus and it's聽 full of hobos that are crazy that want to fight聽聽
[583]
you if you want to to get into a fight right聽 now in our society just hop onto a city bus聽聽
[588]
it's full of people that are angry at life and are聽 willing to take a swing at you even if you don't聽聽
[593]
want to fight sometimes you just have to fight聽 to be on the uh the private jet of the common聽聽
[600]
man and the city bus is the least safe place you聽 can imagine finding yourself so if you're thinking聽聽
[605]
about creating a holistic relationship between聽 work and life ride the bus and figure out exactly聽聽
[612]
how it is that you're supposed to find this聽 holistic relationship because i don't see it i聽聽
[618]
mean all i see is poverty decay and unemployment聽 in our world i don't see anything else i get on聽聽
[625]
these news sites and i go down the articles on cnn聽 and i'm like this is a lie this is a lie this is聽聽
[632]
the lie oh the delta uh variant of covert uh 19聽 isn't dangerous you're like it's ravaging the聽聽
[638]
other countries right now how are you supposed to聽 come out here and tell us that it's not a problem聽聽
[642]
and that's just our society trying to get things聽 back to the way that they were before our society聽聽
[648]
is far from ever getting rid of this pandemic it's聽 just going to keep eating away more of the people聽聽
[655]
that have to work in dangerous places again your聽 grocery store workers your restaurant workers聽聽
[661]
your warehouse workers any place where an employee聽 isn't going to be able to stay a safe distance聽聽
[666]
away from other employees it's only a matter of聽 time before you get delta and that goes without聽聽
[671]
saying a lot of people in this country have聽 chosen to uh go it alone uh without getting the聽聽
[678]
the the thing in your behind so moving on to our聽 final talking point if i'm happy at home i come聽聽
[686]
into the office with tremendous energy and if i'm聽 happy at work i come home with tremendous energy聽聽
[693]
okay now the last time i went anywhere with聽 tremendous amount of energy i was heavily聽聽
[700]
intoxicated and i would tell you that once it wore聽 off and i felt the uh tremendous energy it was a聽聽
[707]
wicked hangover i have never gone into the office聽 and said you know what i really want to be here聽聽
[713]
i mean every day that i had to go and work at聽 walmart or the call center it was i was just聽聽
[719]
hoping that god would take mercy upon me and聽 just strike me down where i was i didn't want聽聽
[724]
to go there every day i didn't want to go there聽 i knew that those jobs were such dead-end places聽聽
[730]
that the only thing that i would uh that would聽 happen to me while i was in the workplace was聽聽
[735]
hoping that someone would go post them and finally聽 just do us all in because it was such a terrible聽聽
[741]
toxic environment and it was everything about聽 the job the menial tasks the people the pay聽聽
[748]
the pay the pay so coming into the聽 office with tremendous amount of energy聽聽
[754]
and if i'm happy at work you're not happy at work聽 so what you're coming home with is a tremendous聽聽
[760]
amount of negative energy the last thing you聽 want to do is come home from work with any sort聽聽
[766]
of happiness in your heart because that doesn't聽 happen when you make the minimum wage once you put聽聽
[772]
on a uniform the illusion of happiness fades away聽 i mean happiness is so far away it might as well聽聽
[780]
be in a distant universe and you're never going聽 to touch it the minimum wage and low-level jobs聽聽
[786]
working in a place like a dollar store where a聽 lot of you are going to end up working uh it is聽聽
[792]
just not a happy place and if you walk into one聽 of those places and you look at the employees聽聽
[797]
the only thing that you see is sadness depression聽 despair uh a lack of hope uh people who are hungry聽聽
[807]
i mean i i can't tell you guys how many times i聽 had to watch people while i worked at walmart in聽聽
[811]
the break room at lunch with nothing to eat that聽 was a everyday situation when you're a corporation聽聽
[817]
and you're doing a food drive for your employees聽 when you're the wealthiest retailer in the world聽聽
[823]
there is something horrendously wrong and if聽 you're miserable at home because not only do you聽聽
[830]
not get to eat when you're home because there's聽 nothing in the fridge if you're working for the聽聽
[834]
minimum wage part-time but there's also nothing聽 to eat at work so now as an industrial athlete聽聽
[840]
you have nothing to eat while you're in the聽 warehouse and what did jeff bezos say about聽聽
[844]
two weeks ago we need the employees to be eating聽 seven to nine times a day to keep up their energy聽聽
[850]
so they can keep working so they don't get fired聽 think about that we need you to have enough energy聽聽
[856]
happy energy so you don't get fired but we聽 don't pay you enough to eat so this circle聽聽
[864]
i'm beginning to to think that jeff bezos is聽 thinking the circle of life in which you're born聽聽
[869]
you work in his warehouse and then you die that聽 completes the circle in his mind because as he聽聽
[875]
said himself you're not worth my uh more than聽 what he pays you in fact you're worth a lot less聽聽
[882]
and the employees are lazy that's why he'll fire聽 you the second you start to show uh wear and聽聽
[889]
tear in your body and your mind uh when you can't聽 create a holistic relationship with your warehouse聽聽
[895]
job he's just looking and waiting for you to聽 fail at your metrics that he has set for you聽聽
[900]
that you must meet every single day where there's聽 a write-up or determination and again he's not聽聽
[906]
setting you up to win at this endeavor because you聽 know that if you come to work and you're hungry聽聽
[912]
chances are you're not going to do well at your聽 job this is the reason why they had to start聽聽
[916]
providing free breakfasts in public schools in low聽 income areas because these children were coming to聽聽
[923]
school with nothing to eat because their parents聽 were working for jeff bezos so you've got a parent聽聽
[928]
a single parent with four kids who can't afford聽 to feed themselves but you're expecting them to聽聽
[932]
be able to feed four children on what he pays聽 you in the warehouse it's not going to happen聽聽
[937]
so this is actually a domino effect in our society聽 you work in jeff bezos warehouse your life decline聽聽
[944]
your children's life declines your overall聽 happiness declines you're living in a bad聽聽
[950]
part of town and your outlook on life is like god聽 i hope i get struck by lightning i hope today it聽聽
[956]
is the day that you know if there's a merciful聽 god who won't let me come back here and work聽聽
[960]
in this awful warehouse or this retail job any聽 place where you have to wear a uniform people聽聽
[966]
shouldn't be there there should be a way out of聽 that whether it's through universal uh income聽聽
[972]
you know where everyone gets a certain amount聽 of money so they can afford to live and still聽聽
[977]
work for jeff bezos because again when it comes聽 to universal basic income you need that in order聽聽
[982]
to be able to stay alive long enough so jeff bezos聽 can exploit you without it he's going to exploit聽聽
[989]
you for a lot less amount of the time because聽 you're eventually just going to keel over in聽聽
[993]
the warehouse because you have nothing to eat and聽 you're always worried that you can't pay the rent聽聽
[998]
this is the circle of life that he's talking about聽 being born working in the warehouse and eventually聽聽
[1005]
falling over collapsed on the warehouse floor聽 because you couldn't afford to spend money聽聽
[1010]
and eat nine times a day while you're聽 urinating in a clear plastic bottle
