[0]
all right now to a news project i-team
[2]
investigation new rules if you've
[4]
noticed that your homeowner's insurance
[5]
premiums have skyrocketed you are not
[9]
alone florida is in a property insurance
[11]
crisis and many homeowners are hit with
[13]
an ultimatum replace your roof or lose
[16]
your coverage completely and it could
[17]
cost you thousands of dollars out of
[20]
pocket news for jacks i-team
[21]
investigator vic micalucci looks at what
[23]
is fueling the rate hikes and new
[25]
requirements that all homeowners need to
[27]
know about
[28]
it was built in the 20s donnie mack
[31]
loves his 100 year old property in
[33]
avondale it was built as a multi-family
[36]
so there's there's four units in this
[38]
particular building he does not love the
[41]
bills my insurance agent
[43]
reached out to me and said you know my
[45]
rates are going up a 1500 yearly hike
[48]
the reason his roof is more than 10
[51]
years old it's a little shy of 20 years
[53]
old actually it's never leaked no issues
[56]
so i don't see why i have to replace it
[59]
you know if he doesn't his insurance
[61]
company could drop him and he's not
[64]
alone when i called our insurance
[66]
agent she said good luck in finding
[68]
something countless homeowners across
[70]
florida are getting notices that their
[72]
insurance is not being renewed because
[75]
their roof is too old we've always paid
[78]
everything on time we've never had any
[80]
claims they also give a deadline they're
[83]
like you know
[84]
if you don't get your roof done in so
[86]
and so such time frame
[88]
you're going to get dropped ty caracas
[90]
with southern coast roofing gets the
[92]
frantic calls every day they're
[94]
obligated to put that roof on and what
[97]
happens they got to pay out of pocket
[98]
the cost of a new roof depends on the
[100]
size of your home but roof quotes can
[102]
range from three thousand dollars to
[105]
twenty five thousand dollars
[107]
naturally you'd wanna blame the
[109]
insurance company but not so fast says
[111]
agent daniel miller we're seeing that
[114]
the reason for the roof replacement
[115]
requests are because of so many claims
[118]
that are being put on these homeowners
[120]
insurance companies miller is co-owner
[122]
of brightway insurance a broker that
[124]
says insurance fraud is worse in florida
[127]
than anywhere else
[130]
because of a number of phony claims
[132]
after hurricanes and hailstorms
[136]
plus lawsuits which can cost the company
[139]
20 times what the claim is for
[141]
miller says many insurance companies
[143]
have left the state and those still here
[147]
must pass costs on to the consumers and
[150]
make new rules so there are fewer claims
[153]
in the future we are seeing that
[156]
insurance companies are nitpicking we're
[159]
asking for guidelines that haven't been
[161]
asked for before a roofer will install a
[163]
roof saying that it has a 30-year
[165]
shingle but the insurance company is
[166]
asking for it to be replaced in 12 years
[169]
there's there's a disconnect there and
[171]
it's not just the roof many companies
[173]
are asking people to replace their hot
[175]
water heaters they're plumbing they're
[177]
electrical even if they're working just
[179]
fine
[180]
that could cost you even more out of
[182]
pocket
[183]
insurers are bleeding
[185]
excessively here in florida we're
[188]
projecting an underwriting loss
[190]
in excess of 1.6 billion dollars
[193]
for 2021. mark friedlander with the
[196]
non-profit insurance information
[198]
institute says the sunshine state has a
[201]
property insurance crisis like nowhere
[203]
else
[204]
and that is triggering a domino effect
[207]
with premiums skyrocketing you know
[209]
we're hearing from homeowners across the
[211]
state that are seeing
[214]
50 percent increases 100 percent
[216]
increases
[217]
and some of them legitimately never had
[220]
a claim friedlander says homeowners
[222]
should plan for a rate hike shop around
[225]
and ask their agents how they can cut
[228]
costs but what should you do if your
[230]
insurance company all out drops you we
[233]
took your questions to florida's chief
[235]
financial officer jimmy petronas so what
[238]
do you do if there's somebody that
[241]
has done everything right they're still
[242]
getting dropped and they don't have the
[244]
money for that total roof replacement
[246]
where do they go so i mean unfortunately
[249]
it's citizens insurance citizens
[251]
insurance
[252]
based right here in duval county in
[254]
jacksonville
[255]
it's the insurance company both that you
[257]
and i own every citizen the state owns
[259]
but it's the insurance of last resort do
[261]
you believe that the insurance providers
[264]
are working in the public's best
[265]
interest do you think that they're being
[266]
fair here with these rate hikes you know
[268]
i think they're trying to survive
[270]
petronas says he's working with
[271]
lawmakers to cut down on fraud and bring
[275]
more business to the state
[278]
experts say to keep the situation from
[279]
getting worse
[280]
stay away from fly by night contractors
[283]
who promise to make a claim on your
[285]
behalf my cost is going up johnny mack
[288]
who's in the property business says he's
[290]
now budgeting for higher premiums and
[293]
knows a full roof replacement is on the
[296]
horizon it's not all bad news there is
[298]
some relief in sight cfo patronus is
[301]
pushing a bill that includes home
[303]
hardening
[304]
that would mean tax relief for
[306]
homeowners who install impact resistant
[309]
doors windows and garages
[311]
with those upgrades insurance companies
[314]
could lower your premiums as well
[316]
the home hardening initiative is part of
[318]
a tax package now headed to the full
[320]
florida house for a vote
[322]
we'll keep you posted on how that
[324]
develops i'm i-team investigator vic
