Top 5 Movies to Learn Spoken English! - YouTube

Channel: The Urban Fight

[0]
Let's accept it..
[1]
Most of us started watching English movies for...
[4]
..Sex Education.
[6]
Because all that Hindi movies were showing, was this..
[10]
and if by some dumb luck, we get to kiss someone
[12]
we should atleast know how!
[14]
But my English teacher was a religious man.
[16]
When during one period, he had to show us a movie,
[19]
he picked one where nobody was kissing anybody.
[22]
Baby's Day Out!
[23]
And sitting in the room with 60 other students, I realised..
[27]
'Oh, so you can watch a movie to learn English also?'
[31]
And since then trust me, watching movies has improved my Spoken English skills.
[36]
So if you also have been watching movies since the time
[39]
Jack (yes, I know) froze to death in Titanic
[41]
and have still not learnt the language
[43]
then in today's video we are going to see..
[45]
4 simple steps you must follow so that movies start teaching you English.
[51]
5 of my favourite movies that you must watch
[53]
to improve your Sentence-Formation skills.
[56]
And towards the end, I'll give you a Bonus Tip so that
[59]
you learn English every time you get on your phone or your laptop.
[64]
But before that, if you like my work make sure you hit that
[67]
big fat 'like' button because it motivates me to make more videos.
[71]
Let's begin!
[92]
I am sure most people have asked you to..
[95]
watch the same movie twice, read the delayed subtitles,
[98]
pause and write the words you have learnt.
[101]
But all of these suggestions make a movie very boring.
[104]
But if you want to learn English and ALSO be entertained
[108]
then here are the 4 steps that you can follow..
[111]
#1: Start Simple
[113]
The simplest movies to learn English from
[116]
are made my people who are like you.
[119]
Let me explain.
[120]
I am Indian and when I was in college
[122]
I couldn't understand what Jack (yes, yes) was telling Rose...
[129]
but I understood what Kohli saab was telling Aishwarya Rai..
[133]
'You already spoke to my mama?'
[134]
'Yes. She is very enthusiastic about the marriage.'
[136]
It's the same reason why you understand my English too
[140]
because both of us are from the same country.
[142]
Movies made by people from some other land will have their cultural reference, like..
[147]
Caviar, Brooklyn bridge, Insidious sod, Tiffany's..
[152]
things and phrases that we have not come across yet.
[155]
And because both the language and the reference are new to us,
[158]
our brain shuts off completely and refuses to learn.
[162]
So in the beginning, pick movies that are made by people who have the same
[167]
accent as you, same culture as you
[169]
because that makes learning really simple.
[173]
Some Desi English movies that you can watch are..
[176]
Bride and Prejudice,
[177]
Bend it like Beckham and..
[179]
Life of Pi.
[180]
So pick any of these movies and..
[182]
'Bring it on!'
[183]
Step #2: Who do you want to be?
[187]
As a kid, I wanted to be just like Viki from Small Wonder.
[191]
A super smart, super strong robot.
[194]
I wouldn't understand everything from that TV show but
[196]
my brain made an extra effort to understand it
[199]
because I was so in love with her character.
[202]
So step #2 is to watch movies that connect with you
[206]
at a personal level irrespective of who they are made by.
[209]
For example, suppose you want to be a lawyer
[212]
then watch movies like..
[213]
Legally Blonde,
[214]
Liar Liar.
[215]
If you want to learn public-speaking, watch movies like..
[217]
The King's Speech,
[219]
Dead Poet's Society.
[220]
If you want to be a Wizard..
[224]
Now there are 2 reasons why I am asking you to watch these types of movies..
[228]
#1. Since these are so closely related to who you are,
[231]
you can learn English sentences from them
[234]
that you can use in your daily conversations.
[236]
and #2. Who knows? Because you like them so much,
[240]
these characters might end up inspiring you to work hard in your respective careers.
[244]
Step #3: Try to understand different accents.
[247]
The way people use the English language all over the world
[250]
is so different from each other!
[252]
For example, as an Indian, I would say.. 'Hello'.
[255]
An American might say..
[256]
'Hello, What's up?'
[258]
A Britisher might say...
[259]
'How are you? Whats up?'
[262]
An Australian might say..
[263]
'Good day, mate! Hi from Australia.'
[266]
And Louis from Ant-Man will say...
[272]
If people around the world, cannot sync up on the word... 'Hello', imagine how different
[277]
the rest of the sentences would sound.
[280]
But be it in a job or in business, you might have to
[283]
interact with people from US, UK, Canada, Australia.
[287]
When I was a Software Developer, my first client was from Australia
[291]
and I'd always have my Team Lead sitting right next to me during conference calls
[295]
because I would not understand what the client was asking us to do.
[299]
That's how different the language sounded to me.
[302]
So for this step, pick one accent a month
[304]
esp. the one related to your work
[306]
and watch movies of actors who have that accent.
[309]
For British you can watch movies like..
[311]
Notting Hill,
[312]
Kingsman,
[313]
Love Actually.
[314]
For Australian, you can follow actors like..
[316]
Chris Hemsworth,
[317]
Nicole Kidman,
[318]
Hugh Jackman.
[319]
Step #4: Become a Die-Hard Fan!
[323]
A die-hard fan is somebody who is 100% obsessed
[327]
with their favourite game, movie or person.
[330]
And if you become a die-hard fan of a Universe or a character
[334]
then you will do everything to know more about them.
[338]
For example, a Marvel fan will not just watch Marvel movies
[342]
but also read all of it's comics books.
[344]
A Harry Potter fan will read all the 7 books (multiple times),
[347]
will watch all the movies and read all the fan-fiction articles online.
[352]
And Christopher Nolan fans will watch the same movie
[355]
100's of time until they understand it..
[358]
just because they are Nolan fans.
[360]
So find where your loyalties lie because once you become a 'fan' of something
[365]
you will do everything to know more about it
[368]
and in that process, also learn the English language.
[377]
Here are the 5 types of movies which I think you must watch
[380]
to expand your horizons because afterall,
[382]
variety is the spice of life.
[384]
#1: For Animation, watch movies like..
[387]
Croods,
[388]
Shrek (all of 'em),
[389]
Moana,
[390]
How to Train Your Dragon (1,2 and 3).
[392]
They have been made with kids in mind,
[393]
so they'll also have simple sentences for you to learn from.
[397]
#2: For Super-Hero movies, I'd recommend..
[400]
All the Avenger movies (like... all of 'em),
[401]
Star Wars and..
[403]
Wonder Woman. You have to watch Wonder Woman!
[406]
All of these Super-Hero movies will also help you with
[408]
Step #4 i.e becoming a die-hard fan!
[412]
#3: Sci-Fi
[414]
If you want some out of the world entertainment then you must watch...
[417]
Avatar,
[418]
The Martian and..
[420]
Wall-E.
[421]
#4: Romance Movies
[423]
Notting Hill,
[424]
The Fault In Our Stars and..
[426]
P.S. I Love You.
[428]
All of these 3 movies will make you cry like a baby.
[431]
And finally, #5 is Action.
[434]
If there is one action series that you must be a fan of, its..
[439]
John Wick
[440]
because there is no one..
[443]
like Baba Yaga.
[444]
I hope you like that list.
