Trading 101: How a Stock Can Lose You Money. - YouTube
Channel: ClayTrader
[0]
I've talked about how stocks make you
[1]
money but let's talk about the flipside
[3]
how can a stock how will a stock lose
[6]
you money right off the get-go why do I
[15]
say how will a stock lose you money cuz
[17]
everybody loses money in stocks and
[19]
that's why diversification meaning a
[22]
bunch of different stocks is so
[23]
important because stop right now if you
[26]
think that you're gonna be some stock
[27]
protege that's that's never gonna be
[29]
wrong or anything like that even Warren
[31]
Buffett has lost money but you know 101
[33]
how does a stock actually lose you money
[36]
and to me I guess it's just I overlooked
[40]
this but I've had several comments come
[41]
in and people which makes sense they
[43]
always take it to the far end of you
[45]
know being drastic but I've gotten a
[46]
couple messages such as this can you
[48]
always sell what if there is no buyer
[50]
what happens then but what if you do not
[53]
have any people to buy your share like I
[55]
said people always going drastic what if
[57]
there's absolutely zero people to buy a
[60]
share after you've gotten it so I will
[62]
look at that in a minute but let's just
[64]
kind of break down what's going on here
[66]
so that is you and you have bought a
[74]
stock for $25 so you have put $25 into
[83]
the market meaning $25 is at risk well
[86]
exactly how is it at risk how are you
[89]
going to lose money after buying a share
[91]
for $25 if you get this that's fine you
[93]
can stop the video there's a reason why
[95]
this is a trading 101 I get it it's
[96]
basic but some people when you're brand
[98]
new it's a valid question but how are
[101]
you gonna actually lose money on it and
[104]
we remember you have put $25 into a
[106]
market and I'm not gonna go all
[108]
economics on you but just understand
[110]
that a market is made up of a bunch of
[112]
people buyers and sellers so over here
[115]
is you know the remainder of the market
[117]
you have people all over the place and
[120]
they are just part of the market
[128]
now the key thing here is in how a stock
[133]
will lose you money is this market has
[137]
got to be willing to look at the stock
[139]
so we'll go with stock XYZ very creative
[147]
on my part hi so stock XYZ you bought
[150]
for $25 all the market needs to be
[153]
looking at this and at least somebody
[157]
needs to be able or neat not only needs
[160]
to but wants to pay $25 and one cents in
[164]
that case well that would mean you would
[166]
actually be able to make a penny because
[168]
you bought it for 25 but if somebody in
[171]
the market is one a Pepe 2501 then hey
[174]
you made a penny if somebody's willing
[176]
to pay 26 then hopefully you're saying
[178]
okay then that means I could make a
[180]
dollar on it because someone's willing
[182]
to pay it down or more than what I
[183]
bought it for but then there's a flip
[185]
side let's say that everybody's looking
[187]
at this and the market as a whole is
[189]
saying you know what I'm only willing to
[192]
pay twenty four ninety what did you buy
[196]
it for 25 I don't to insult your
[198]
intelligence on the math but 25 minus 24
[201]
90 equals 10 with a minus there so you
[207]
actually are now losing 10 cents on this
[210]
transaction because the market the only
[212]
price anybody's willing to pay in the
[214]
entire market is twenty four ninety what
[218]
happens if the market is now saying no
[221]
I'm willing to pay $20 for that again
[224]
not to insult your intelligence but you
[226]
bought it for twenty five if the markets
[228]
only willing to pay $20 for it and that
[230]
would be you know 25 minus 20 equals
[233]
five five dollars but of course it's
[236]
down so you put a negative right there
[237]
that means you are now losing five
[239]
dollars you put twenty five dollars into
[242]
the market but the market is telling you
[244]
and that wasn't the best choice because
[245]
now it's only worth twenty who says it's
[248]
worth twenty well the market if people
[250]
are only willing to pay $20 for it by
[252]
definition that's what it's worth right
[254]
worth is only what somebody's willing to
[255]
pay and if the markets only willing to
[257]
pay 20 well and now you're losing five
[260]
dollars so
[261]
let's take it to the drastic end what
[264]
happens if nobody out here I mean nobody
[267]
wants to even touch it at all that means
[270]
people are willing to pay what if
[272]
nobody's willing to pay anything then
[275]
well that would be zero meaning you have
[279]
lost how much if you bought it for 25
[281]
and nobody wants to buy it from you
[284]
then what does that known as well that
[286]
would be known as worthless worthless
[288]
numerically is known as well being worth
[290]
zero dollars meaning you have lost all
[293]
25 dollars now does this happen often no
[298]
I mean if you're talking with Penny
[300]
Stocks and stuff like that yeah this
[301]
could happen but most times you'll be
[303]
able to sell it but sometimes and you
[306]
know it's going to be your to sell a net
[307]
worth or for less than what you bought
[310]
it for hence a loss that's how a stock
[312]
will lose you money and does lose you
[314]
money because you got to make sure that
[316]
as soon as you buy it the idea is
[318]
eventually somebody else in the market
[320]
is going to be willing to buy it for you
[321]
at a higher price that doesn't always
[324]
happen now that's why that's and that's
[326]
where the strategy comes in maybe
[328]
thinking oh that sounds like a pretty
[329]
big challenge I need to buy something
[331]
that somebody else later on is gonna be
[333]
want to pay me more for that sounds fun
[335]
well yeah that's why the stock market is
[337]
quite it's a very chick it's the game of
[340]
games because that is the game but the
[342]
kicker is this game involves real money
[345]
your money so that's why you can't just
[347]
go out there and just start randomly
[349]
doing stuff because if you're stupid and
[351]
I was stupid a lot of people are stupid
[353]
when I first get started in trading in
[354]
the stock market then you know they're
[356]
buying stuff and then they find out oh
[358]
nobody else is willing to buy it for
[360]
what what I want to you know ideally
[362]
sell it for so that is how a stock loses
[365]
you money it's just based off of what is
[368]
the market willing to pay you for and if
[371]
they're willing to pay you for it worth
[374]
a price less than what you bought it for
[376]
well then that's where you got to start
[377]
to do the math and figure out how much
[378]
are you actually losing with again the
[380]
drastic case being if there are no
[382]
buyers then that means that you it is
[386]
worthless if I if you go to somebody and
[388]
say I'm trying to sell my car but it's
[390]
worthless you would understand them
[392]
saying well that means that your car
[393]
must be a really piece of
[395]
garbage because there's not anybody out
[396]
there that's willing to even give you a
[397]
dollar for it yeah that is worthless so
[400]
that is what's going on there but again
[402]
I'm not trying to steer you away from
[403]
the stock market could this happen well
[406]
sure it could happen but you know if
[407]
you're focused on the stocks that you
[409]
should be focused on then the likelihood
[411]
of that happening is very very tiny but
[413]
that is how the dynamics and the math of
[415]
you know just a loss within the market
[418]
works if you are out there trading alone
[420]
currently and maybe are in the market
[422]
looking for a community to join to
[424]
assist you in your trading or to just
[426]
help you you don't give you another set
[427]
of eyeballs that I do have a private
[430]
trading community where you can trade
[431]
alongside me and other experienced
[432]
traders so what you see popping up on
[434]
the screen right now is both an
[436]
information link so if you click on the
[438]
inner circle one that is going to take
[440]
you to the page where I explain all the
[442]
details of what exactly come with the
[444]
community both the chatroom and the
[446]
newsletter and then the other image that
[447]
is popped up is a behind-the-scenes tour
[449]
where you can see exactly what is going
[451]
to you know be contained within the
[453]
community I take you through like I said
[455]
behind-the-scenes tour of everything and
[457]
that way you'll know precisely what you
[459]
are getting you know when you join so
[461]
definitely check that stuff out if you
[463]
are interested and thinking about you
[465]
don't want it to join a community and
[466]
let me know if you have any questions
