Awhile ago, I made a tutorial on how make a Moleskine style notebook.
[4]
Since then, many of you have asked how to add a pocket to it.
[8]
So in this tutorial, I will show you how to add an expandable pocket to the back of your
[12]
book.
[15]
I still use the original book I made from the tutorial, and it has held up pretty well.
[22]
If you're wondering why those pages look so wrinkly, somehow my drink always sweats onto
[27]
my pages as I'm writing...
[29]
anyways...
[30]
If you want to make this book for yourself, check out this tutorial here.
[34]
You can also find the link in the description below.
[40]
For a quick and easy way to add a pocket, you can glue an envelope to the inside cover.
[46]
You can choose to leave the flap or cut it off.
[53]
Or you can make an expandable pocket like this.
[63]
Here's a list of materials and tools I'll be using to make one.
[71]
First off, I'm using two 8.5x11 inch sheets of paper.
[74]
You may need to adjust some of the measurements if your book is not the same size.
[78]
I want a small border around the pocket, so I'm going to trim off half an inch on 1 sheet
[83]
of paper.
[87]
Then fold it in half, and run a bone folder along the edge.
[91]
If you don't have a bone folder, you can check out these substitutes here, or see the link
[95]
in the description below.
[102]
Now score a line 3/4 inch from the open end.
[109]
And then fold those flaps inward.
[120]
And cut the ends at a slight angle.
[128]
When this is folded, you should have about an 1/4 inch border around the pocket.
[132]
Set that aside, and cut the other piece of paper in half.
[138]
Take one half, and cut that in half to form two small pieces.
[145]
Starting with one, fold it in half.
[151]
And then fold the sides in half like this.
[165]
Do the same thing with the other small piece.
[174]
Now glue them to the larger piece.
[176]
I'm using Elmer's craft bond extra strength glue stick.
[180]
You can use other types of glue made for paper, but I like this type because it's strong,
[184]
acid free, dries fast and won't warp your paper.
[188]
Glue the outer flap onto the side of the pocket.
[191]
And make sure the middle zig-zag is folding toward the inside of the pocket.
[208]
Then glue the top flap over.
[217]
Glue the ends of the flaps to the other side of the pocket.
[229]
And glue that top flap over.
[244]
Finally, glue the entire pocket to the inside cover.
[267]
Now you have an expandable pocket.
[269]
I find it's really helpful for loose pantone chips, swatches or business cards.
