DON'T GET a SIM Card in Korea Until You Watch This Video! - YouTube

Channel: Haeppy

[0]
You get to Korea, and you're like. I need a phone.
[3]
I need to be able to contact people. Well, your immediate option is available straight outside the gate at the convenience store.
[9]
You're going to see SIM
[11]
written in big letters.
[12]
But as you probably know the first option might not be the best option and the best option
[17]
might be a little bit further afield, it will be worth it, worth the journey and worth the effort you put in
[22]
to get this little deal.
[24]
We're about to tell you right now. Now when you arrive at the airport
[27]
everything is more expensive, Of course. You know, they want to get money from tourists. They're going to present this easy option. You can just
[32]
speak English. You just walk in "I need a sim card, please." "Oh. Yeah, sure." BAM. Here's a sim card. Take your money. BAM.
[37]
You're on your own you're gone. But Haeppy's going to explain in very nice great
[41]
detail, this little bit, you will need some Korean, but you're going to be saving money. You're probably gonna be way happier and
[47]
everyone will love you. That's not guaranteed.
[50]
Before I start, just a little bit of information about what you can get at the airport. If you're here for like three or four days
[55]
don't bother with the option that we're going to tell you about. Go get that prepaid card from them- from the airport.
[60]
Because otherwise, it's just too much of a hassle AND technically you'll be paying less.
[64]
Unfortunately, the prepaid SIMs at the airport will only give you 3G internet
[69]
I believe. But if you're here for three or four days, that's really all you need.
[72]
There's another option like buying one of those Wi-Fi eggs. That's like a whole different thing as well.
[77]
We're not going to talk about that. On this episode we're going to talk about
[80]
prepaid plans that tourists or that
[83]
non-Koreans and also people without an alien registration card can get.
[88]
(Xander): Step one - Find a Store.
[90]
Korea is littered with cell phone stores owned by three different service providers.
[96]
SKT, so SK Telecom.
[98]
Kt, or Korea Telecom, and
[100]
LG U+ (LG Uplus). I suggest never to go to the Lg U+ if you're going to get something, go ahead with SKT or Kt
[106]
And if we ever say "go to an Lg U+" in the future, they paid us to say it. Xander and I, we use SKT.
[112]
We compared all the plans and fared all the rates and SKT came out on top. From our experience
[117]
we only really know about SKT so we're going to teach you about SKT.
[120]
You might have to find another video about Kt (Korea Telecom).
[123]
With SKT, you can go to the store and you can ask them for prepaid
[127]
plan.
[130]
You can probably say it in English, just be like "tourist."
[135]
"Tourist."
[135]
KOREAN LESSON TIME!
[136]
Yeo-Haeng Ha-Reo Wass-Seum-ni-da
[139]
Yeo-Haeng = Travel
[141]
and then the rest is, basically "I came to travel"
[144]
That's what the line is. I'm not going to teach you why.
[146]
Just memorize it.
[147]
The moment you say that, they're going to know you don't have an ARC (Alien Registration Card)
[149]
and you're not a Korean. If you look like Xander
[152]
they'll already know you're not Korean.
[154]
Once you say that they're probably going to be like *blah blah blah* *gibberish*
[157]
And you just say "prepaid" "Prepaid." Flash them your cash.
[159]
At first they'll offer you something for 30,000 won.
[163]
For 30,000 won at SKT, you'll get 2 GB of LTE internet.
[168]
So data and also a certain amount of minutes.
[171]
I suggest you don't ever use the minutes. Use your internet for communication. If you're there, and you're streaming stuff
[176]
and you're watching YouTube it's gonna rack up on you.
[179]
Don't take the $30, unless you think that you're only going to use 2GBs.
[182]
Ask them for the 5 GB option.
[184]
O-Gi-Ga
[186]
You can guess what "Gi-Ga" means. "O" is five. That option should be 45,000 won.
[192]
The great thing about SKT is that there is no time limit on your
[196]
prepaid minutes and data. It might have changed, but before when I had friends that were with Kt. They said that with Kt
[203]
every month you have to re-up whether or not you use the minutes or data.
[208]
It's kind of their way to force prepaid plan users to keep paying money.
[211]
With SKT your minutes and your data lasts until you run out. Once it runs out you have the option to re-up for
[217]
10,000 won, or re-up like a larger amount for however many you want, I think up to 5 gigs.
[223]
Depending on your location, in Seoul
[225]
I had to pay
[226]
around 8,000 won, maybe 9,000 won for a sim card, a new sim card. When my brother came at out I did this for him.
[233]
In Suwon, they gave it to us for free.
[235]
[Xander] That might just be from the kindness of the guy we don't know.
[237]
[Haeppy] It might just be the kindness of the guy. [Xander] We don't know.
[238]
We have no idea. You may need to pay for the sim card.
[241]
It's not them like
[242]
cheating you or anything or saying you have to pay for something that you don't. There is that Sim card fee and it's up to
[246]
the store owner or the person working to waive it for you. You will need to bring your passport.
[251]
They'll make a copy of your passport, they'll fill out all the forms for you
[255]
and then you give them the cash at the end.
[256]
They'll help you install it and everything like that. Another thing that you might have to think about, every country has their own LTE
[263]
bands that they use. iPhone users
[265]
don't have to worry, every single iphone is okay with every band in the world. Samsung phones as well should be international bands
[272]
but if you have like an older phone
[273]
you might need to check online whether or not you have the bands that Korea offers.
[277]
Here are the frequencies for SKT.
[280]
This option is better for those who are staying for
[285]
anywhere between 2 weeks and up. Because the stuff that you buy at the convenience store in the airport, it gives you like
[291]
1.5 GBs for like 20 bucks AND it's 3G.
[294]
If you're staying for any longer than a week, get the other prepaid plan.
[298]
So be smart, don't sit there on Facebook
[301]
scrolling through watching videos. Videos are VERY BAD. Instagram videos are also VERY bad.
[305]
They will eat up all your data. Tinder will eat up your data
[308]
but like...that's worth it. If it works out it's worth it.
[312]
Get some apps. We'll do a whole video separately about this but I just recommend KakaoTalk, for one, because everyone uses that to communicate and it's
[318]
really really quick and it's very low data usage. Get Naver Maps because you're going to need that for getting around anyway.
[324]
That's pretty much the only two you need, I think, but we'll do a more in depth video about that.
[328]
But just be smart. Because you don't, unless you're rich then go fucking ahead, you spend your money but you know 5 GBs.
[335]
I'm on a contract which is like 20 GBs a month and I use about 11 or 12
[339]
I think, a month. I do a lot of stuff on my phone.
[341]
So just as a heads up you may rinse your day real quick.
[345]
Just be smart about it
[346]
and you'll have a great time.
[347]
And I hope this video was useful. I hope if it works out. If you have run into problems
[351]
write them in the comments and then we can hopefully address them. That might help other people
[356]
if this wasn't enough being but unless the person working in the store really doesn't want to deal with you
[362]
which hopefully they will, they should be nice, they might not want to deal with you and go "Oh no no, we don't do it."
[365]
But they do. So if you have any other problems just let us know and hopefully everyone can get this amazing data plan.
[372]
Thank you very much for watching and as always
[375]
Stay Fancy.
