Bank Note Counterfeiting - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[19]
Hi there, my name is Alex.
[21]
Cash ... there's nothing quite like it.
[24]
It's a popular means of payment.
[26]
And that creates opportunities for counterfeiters.
[29]
But our bank notes are tough to counterfeit.
[36]
I'm late ... I'm supposed to pick up my daughter at school.
[40]
She's not going to be happy I'm so late.
[43]
Can you hurry up, please?
[44]
I've really have to get going.
[45]
Sure.
[50]
Um, sir, I'm afraid I can't accept this bill.
[53]
It looks like it may be a counterfeit.
[55]
You've got to be kidding!
[57]
I got that from my bank this morning.
[62]
I don't believe this.
[64]
I'm sorry, you know these things happen.
[66]
I recommend you go to the police and maybe
[67]
have them check it out.
[70]
I don't have time for this.
[78]
Now, remember any one of us could have a counterfeit
[80]
in our possession and not know it.
[83]
If you sense that someone may be trying to pass a
[85]
counterfeit, you need to maintain your composure
[87]
and act professionally.
[89]
I've seen a lot of customers,
[92]
and you know sometimes I can sense who might be
[94]
trying to pull one over on me.
[97]
They might seem to be a little shifty,
[98]
or in a hurry, or they only have a large bill to use.
[102]
So, I know it's best to keep my cool,
[105]
check the bills carefully, and if any are suspicious,
[108]
I just say I'm not allowed to accept them.
[112]
In many cases, organized crime is behind the production
[115]
and distribution of counterfeit notes.
[117]
They often seek out easy targets,
[120]
such as businesses that don't check their cash.
[123]
Counterfeiting operations can be sophisticated
[125]
and the proceeds are often used to fund other serious
[127]
crimes in your community.
[131]
We need to play it safe.
[132]
There's no point in putting ourselves at risk.
[136]
I mean, you never know what sort of character you
[137]
may be dealing with, so I'm careful not to accuse
[139]
a customer of trying to pass a counterfeit.
[147]
If you come across a suspect note, advise the customer
[150]
to take it to the police for verification.
[153]
Once they have left, inform your supervisor,
[155]
who will contact the police.
[158]
Pass along any details that could help a potential
[160]
investigation: when it happened,
[163]
the value of the note, and a description of the person.
[169]
Keeping ahead of counterfeiting involves
[171]
more than issuing secure bank notes.
[173]
The security features are there for you to check!
[176]
This applies to both polymer and paper notes.
[179]
As a cash handler, besides checking your notes,
[182]
you can also help speed up the transition to polymer
[184]
notes by separating paper notes in your till,
[186]
and returning polymer notes to customers
[188]
whenever possible.
[190]
While polymer notes are very durable,
[191]
taking care not to crease or crumple them will keep
[193]
them looking their best and circulating longer.
[197]
Whether you are handling polymer or paper notes,
[200]
the security features are easy to check.
[203]
Let's take a look.
[205]
These notes are made from a single piece of polymer,
[208]
which contains a unique combination of
[209]
transparency, holography and other security elements.
[214]
A good way to check them is to Feel, Look, and Flip them.
[220]
Feel the smooth, unique texture of the polymer
[222]
note and the raised ink on the shoulders of the large
[225]
portrait, the large number and the "Bank of Canada" text.
[233]
Next, look at the transparent windows.
[236]
The large window has a metallic building and a
[239]
metallic portrait that matches the large portrait.
[243]
When you tilt the note, there are sharp colour
[245]
changes in the building and more subtle changes
[248]
in the portrait.
[252]
If you flip the note, you will see that the same
[253]
metallic images in the large window are repeated
[257]
in the same colour and detail on the back.
[261]
There's one more security feature you can use if
[263]
you're still unsure that a note is real.
[267]
You will need a small light source that's about
[269]
a metre away from you.
[271]
Locate the frosted maple leaf window and bring it
[274]
right up to your eye.
[277]
Look at the light through the window.
[279]
A circle of numbers matching the note's value will appear.
[284]
For more information about these and other security
[286]
features, visit the Bank of Canada's website.
[291]
Remember that criminals rely on you
[292]
not checking your notes.
[294]
More often than not, fake twenties are being passed
[296]
because crooks believe that larger bills are more
[299]
likely to be checked.
[301]
A sign saying you refuse large bills may be a
[303]
signal to counterfeiters that you are not checking
[305]
your notes at all, making you a potential target.
[309]
Any bill could be counterfeit,
[311]
so it's important to check them all.
[313]
Now if you are unsure about a note-old or
[316]
new-remember that you can always ask for another one.
[320]
With a little practice, checking several security
[323]
features will quickly become second nature to you.
[328]
I've made checking my cash a routine part of my job.
[330]
So, what do I do?
[332]
Well, at first I slide my fingers over the bill,
[334]
which lets me feel the smooth polymer and the
[337]
raised ink areas.
[339]
Next, I look through the transparent window
[341]
and give the bill a little tilt,
[344]
so I can see the colour shifts in the metallic
[346]
portrait and building.
[348]
Then I flip the note and look at the same sort
[350]
of colour changes on the back.
[353]
If ever I'm not sure about a note,
[355]
I'll compare it to one that I know is real.
[357]
And that way, I protect my business and my
[359]
customers-they won't be getting fakes in their change.
[363]
Do your part to prevent bank note counterfeiting.
[366]
The leading-edge security features in our polymer
[368]
notes make them easy to verify and hard to counterfeit.
[371]
Use these features and see for yourself.
[374]
By checking all notes and promptly reporting cases
[376]
of suspected counterfeit notes to police,
[378]
you can play an important role in helping them track
[381]
down counterfeiters and reducing crime.
[385]
It's important to us all.
