president biden met with a bipartisan
[2]
group of lawmakers at the white house
[4]
monday to discuss his 2.3 trillion
[6]
dollar infrastructure plan
[8]
the meeting comes as congress returns to
[10]
washington and as the president signals
[13]
his openness
[14]
to working with capitol hill to pass his
[16]
proposal
[17]
republicans are currently opposing the
[19]
white house's plan
[20]
to raise corporate taxes in order to pay
[22]
for the american jobs plan
[25]
they're also debating over which
[27]
improvements count as
[28]
infrastructure president biden said he's
[31]
willing to negotiate on all of that and
[32]
expressed confidence
[34]
in being able to reach an agreement
[37]
i'm prepared to negotiate as to
[40]
how the extent of the minor
[42]
infrastructure project
[43]
as well as how we pay for it a lot of
[46]
folks saying that
[48]
the fact that we have uh millions of
[51]
people
[51]
not able to drink water because there's
[53]
lead and
[54]
they're it's coming through lead pipes i
[56]
think that's infrastructure
[58]
i think broadband is infrastructure it's
[61]
not just roads bridges highways etc
[63]
that's we're going to talk about and i'm
[66]
confident
[66]
everything's going to work out perfectly
[71]
for more i want to bring in cbs news
[73]
senior white house correspondent rija
[75]
zhang
[75]
hi there rija so what are the next steps
[78]
for the president's infrastructure plan
[81]
well president biden has to sell sell
[83]
sell that's exactly what he was doing
[85]
today
[86]
with this initial meeting and he has
[87]
several cabinet members
[89]
doing the exact same thing trying to
[91]
convince especially republican lawmakers
[93]
that this is the right path forward for
[96]
the country but as you heard him say
[99]
he knows that he has to come to a
[101]
compromise and he is willing to
[103]
negotiate
[104]
what we don't know though is how far he
[106]
is willing to go because he has made
[108]
very clear he thinks
[109]
this package is essential to get people
[112]
back to work
[114]
and to stimulate the economy but also to
[116]
rebuild the country
[118]
and so you're seeing some of his goals
[120]
right here
[121]
um and that's exactly why too that he's
[123]
running into trouble because
[125]
some of these things are are things that
[128]
members of the gop do not believe are
[130]
part of
[130]
what they consider to be traditional
[133]
infrastructure
[134]
elaine it's it's interesting luigi house
[137]
and senate leadership were not at the
[138]
meeting
[139]
what does the group president biden met
[141]
with tell us about where this proposal
[144]
is headed in congress well i think it
[147]
signals that
[148]
the president and the white house wants
[149]
to focus first on the substance of the
[151]
bill
[152]
and get it to a point where they think
[154]
they are ready to negotiate
[156]
even more because these are lawmakers
[158]
who have experience
[159]
crafting uh packages in the past with
[162]
regard to infrastructure they know what
[164]
works they know what members of their
[166]
party wants
[167]
and they know what messages to relay to
[169]
the president with regard to
[171]
the substance of this package and so i
[173]
think that's why
[175]
he's starting there rather than the deal
[177]
making right away
[179]
that said you know the white house
[181]
issued a response quickly after this
[183]
meeting to say this is
[184]
you know just the beginning and there
[186]
will be several meetings with key
[188]
stakeholders
[189]
in the future the president did say he
[193]
is willing to negotiate with republicans
[195]
and said he's confident
[196]
that things would work out does the
[198]
white house actually have a plan to gain
[200]
bipartisan support
[202]
well the plan is to go directly to the
[204]
people and that's what we saw
[206]
during the process to approve the
[209]
coveted relief package as well
[211]
and there was overwhelming support
[214]
from americans for that bill and that's
[218]
what the white house pointed to even
[219]
though there wasn't
[221]
republican support on capitol hill they
[223]
were able to say we went
[225]
and met with met with americans who
[228]
who believe this is the right way to go
[231]
uh for the country and to give them more
[233]
stability as everything tries to reopen
[236]
and so we are expecting more
[238]
announcements from the white house
[240]
for the president to travel to different
[243]
areas in the country
[244]
along with other members of the
[245]
administration to try
[247]
to make the case to people that they
[250]
should call their lawmakers
[251]
and say you know we support this bill
[256]
well president biden was also asked
[258]
about the recent police involved
[259]
shooting in brooklyn center minnesota
[262]
as well as the trial of derrick chauvin
[264]
what did he have to say
[267]
he said that he has spoken to the
[268]
governor along with other officials in
[270]
the state though he hasn't called
[273]
mr wright's family just yet and he
[276]
really wanted to stress
[277]
which he did many times that the
[279]
investigation is still
[281]
just unfolding and so he didn't want to
[283]
speculate about any of the facts in the
[285]
case
[285]
he did mention that the the video that
[288]
you know we have all seen at this point
[289]
was
[290]
fairly graphic and that he agreed
[294]
um with uh wright's mother who called
[296]
for peace at this time
[298]
and the president took that opportunity
[300]
to urge people to remain calm
[302]
and not uh to go looting and protesting
[306]
in a violent manner because of course
[308]
this
[308]
falls with the backdrop of the derrick
[311]
chauvin trial
[312]
in the killing of george floyd so
[315]
tensions are extremely
[316]
high in that area of the country right
[319]
now
[320]
and i think everyone's just waiting and
[322]
hoping that there is not
[324]
more unrest which is what the president
[326]
urged today when he talked about this
[330]
all right vijay zhang at the white house
[331]
we just thank you
[333]
thank you
