[8]
let me explain watches English Heritage
[21]
are a charity that cares more than 400
[23]
historic sites around the country and
[25]
this year they're celebrating England's
[26]
castles and telling some of their
[27]
stories and some of those stories are a
[30]
bit explosive John what are we got here
[33]
well this is a working replica of an
[36]
English Civil War mortar known as
[38]
Roaring Mick the original was built in
[40]
1646 and unlike a cannon which shoots
[44]
level this is designed to lob
[46]
cannonballs over the walls of castles
[48]
and then they would explode inside doing
[51]
as much damage as possible so we are
[53]
actually going to blow something up
[54]
that's the plan yes we're going to load
[56]
this with powder we're going to shoot a
[57]
cannonball rabbit and hopefully do some
[59]
damage so cannonball fires cannon ball
[63]
lands cannon ball blows up and does
[66]
damage wins that's the general plan how
[68]
much gunpowder we're using here okay so
[69]
we would normally use four pounds of
[71]
powder in a hollow cannonball and then
[74]
we'd use another three three and a half
[76]
pounds of powder in the breech to launch
[78]
the Cannonball from the mortar and how
[80]
accurate is this thing can you hit a
[82]
target with this they're not designed
[84]
necessarily for hitting specific items
[86]
but we're gonna give it a very good shot
[88]
we did think about firing this at a real
[90]
castle but that's not a good idea so
[92]
instead we're going to use the British
[94]
standard for destruction on camera
[97]
[Music]
[104]
[Music]
[109]
full disclosure leaning into a cannon to
[112]
light the fuse on a cannonball just
[113]
before it's going to blow is a little
[115]
too risky for the 21st century so we're
[117]
gonna fire a regular cannonball and
[118]
after it lands and crashes in our pyro
[121]
team is going to replace it with charges
[122]
and blow those up but to you it will
[124]
look seamless through the magic of
[126]
editing you ready
[127]
alright you load I'm going to retire to
[129]
a safe distance
[138]
the roaring Meg was an absolute monster
[141]
we're here at Goodrich castle to see the
[143]
damage she did in the summer of 1646
[146]
during the Civil War unable to break the
[150]
castle with conventional cannon Colonel
[152]
birch calls the blacksmith of Goodrich
[154]
nearby in the village to cast in iron in
[157]
his Forge a new big mortar and that's
[160]
roaring roaring Meg could fire explosive
[164]
shells we think they weighed as much as
[166]
200 pounds and basically they were bombs
[168]
they were full of gunpowder they were
[171]
spheres of iron with a lighted fuse
[174]
inside and the fuse was timed in such a
[177]
way that the charge should go off as
[180]
near as possible at point when the shell
[183]
hits its target
[185]
just imagine there you are you can see
[188]
this thing being set up and you hear the
[190]
ominous sound of a wolf as the charge
[192]
goes off and the shell is on its way
[194]
towards you then it must have been an
[196]
unbearable silence waiting for it to hit
[199]
followed by a deafening crash as the
[202]
shell goes off and then the damage of
[204]
bits of iron being fired off in all
[207]
directions absolutely horrific during
[211]
the Civil War roaring meg concentrated
[215]
her fire on this corner and reduced it
[217]
to what we see now the much of the
[219]
circuit the actual tower has completely
[222]
been blown away and in the scraps that
[224]
survived you can see that some of the
[227]
squared stone has been knocked off
[229]
revealing the rough rubble of the core
[232]
behind
[234]
when you look at the damage that a shell
[236]
did to the castle behind me built of
[238]
stone imagining that transferred to
[240]
something flimsy like a caravan I can
[243]
only imagine
[244]
[Music]
[253]
that was a plant fire a cannon ball hit
[256]
the caravan blow up the caravan and full
[259]
disclosure we were just firing a regular
[261]
cannonball we're going to tell you that
[262]
and then after it landed and smash the
[264]
caravan in we're going to go in replace
[267]
it with a mortar charge and blow it up
[269]
so yeah we'd simulate a little but not
[271]
above all provided with

[316]
the reason it's difficult is because
[319]
this isn't a cannon wood firing it's a
[321]
mortar it's not designed to go through a
[323]
thing if designed to go over a castle
[325]
wall and hit somewhere inside a
[326]
courtyard trying to hit what is actually
[329]
a pretty small target is really
[332]
difficult but we did keep hitting the
[334]
same target it just wasn't the care of
[336]
her
[336]
at one point we hit basically within 12
[340]
inches five times in a row
[342]
so we moved the caravan to that position
[347]
[Music]
[355]
yeah that didn't work either he had one
[358]
shot left after that we were out of
[359]
black powder we had to hit it with this
[362]
one
[364]
[Music]
[378]
[Music]
[382]
we think that was close enough and we
[385]
still had the mortar charge so we
[386]
figured for your entertainment and for
[388]
ours we blow up the caravan anyway
