Sinema Signs Off On Inflation Reduction Act - YouTube
Channel: MSNBC
[0]
breaking news tonight from capitol hill
[2]
where it appears there is a deal on the
[4]
inflation reduction act that even
[7]
kirsten cinema is satisfied with what is
[9]
not in it
[11]
closing the carried interest loophole
[13]
which allows the richest of the rich
[15]
private equity giants to pay less taxes
[18]
than the rest of us so let's bring in
[20]
leanne caldwell the author of the
[21]
washington post early202 and she's now
[24]
got a brand new newsletter to write
[26]
tonight leanne let's put carried
[28]
interest over to the side for a moment
[31]
this thing is a big big win for
[32]
democrats isn't it
[35]
it absolutely is this is something that
[37]
after it fell apart months and months
[39]
ago that no one thought it was coming
[41]
back there was some talk that perhaps
[44]
they would get something and then a deal
[46]
last week with senator manchin and
[48]
senator schumer shocked the political
[51]
world especially everyone on capitol
[53]
hill and senator cinema was the last
[57]
outstanding issue they had been working
[59]
furiously to get her on the board uh for
[63]
the past week because she was not
[65]
involved in those previous negotiations
[67]
and now that she's on board this really
[70]
looks like it's going to pass and this
[72]
is going to be the most expansive the
[75]
biggest investment and climate change
[78]
proposals this country has ever seen
[80]
there's a lot of health care priorities
[83]
that are in this that are going to help
[84]
seniors especially
[86]
but there's still some obstacles here so
[89]
you can't spike the football yet but if
[92]
democrats get this done this is huge for
[94]
the midterm elections and huge for the
[95]
biden agenda
[97]
all right but let's bring back this
[99]
carried interest issue because
[101]
preserving this loophole does absolutely
[104]
nothing to help the people of the state
[106]
of arizona the only people who are
[108]
celebrating this
[110]
are really rich private equity guys who
[112]
are on mega yachts on the mediterranean
[114]
tonight
[115]
by preserving this loophole does this
[117]
not say to the american people yes big
[121]
donors dictate policy
[124]
yeah it's really
[126]
difficult to understand the politics
[129]
that senator cinema is putting forward
[131]
here regarding ensuring that this
[133]
loophole is not closed you know
[136]
as far as democrats are concerned
[139]
taxing the rich is still politically
[142]
popular even though republicans are
[144]
trying to hammer democrats saying that
[146]
they are going to raise taxes
[149]
well most americans anyway even a lot of
[152]
independent voters think that
[154]
taxing the rich is okay
[156]
um but you know senator cinema has been
[159]
adamant about this from the beginning of
[162]
these negotiations she's been adamant on
[165]
not raising the corporate tax rate above
[168]
21 where it's at now that's not in this
[171]
legislation in large part because of
[174]
senator cinema and so she really is
[177]
bucking the party here on many of her
[179]
tax policies but they were able to come
[182]
to some sort of agreement but this
[184]
loophole is still going to be open stuff
[187]
and it is not about additional taxes for
[189]
the rich when it comes to carried
[190]
interest it's simply asking them to pay
[193]
the same thing everyone else does leanne
[196]
i know you got to go work on that
[197]
newsletter so we will leave it there and
[199]
dig deeper now with michael steele
[201]
former rnc chairman and former
[203]
lieutenant governor of maryland and
[205]
steve israel former new york congressman
[207]
now director of cornell university's
[209]
institute of politics and global affairs
[212]
steve what's your response to this deal
[214]
a very big win for president biden
[218]
well it's a huge win and also well timed
[220]
we are 95 days away from the midterm
[222]
elections tough environment for
[224]
democrats august recess
[226]
is actually started now the house will
[228]
be called back next week to vote on the
[230]
senate bill assuming it passes august is
[232]
the time when members are out in their
[235]
districts they've got to have a message
[237]
the message has to reflect that we're
[239]
making progress on the economy now they
[241]
have that message again assuming the
[243]
bill passes nothing could be more
[246]
important to the democrats chances of
[248]
retaining the majority in the senate
[250]
and if not retaining the majority in the
[252]
house at least closing the gap than the
[254]
passage of this bill
[257]
michael your take governing is about
[260]
choices and they made a choice tonight
[263]
they did and uh look it was a great
[266]
effort i'm sure there was a lot of face
[268]
time between cinema and mansion um to to
[271]
carve out what was necessary to get this
[273]
done it is a big deal um this is this
[277]
close to the election uh the republicans
[280]
now are going to have to find another
[282]
layer of messaging uh to to go to the
[285]
the country with is not enough to say oh
[287]
you know they want to raise your taxes
[289]
they want to do all these bad things
[290]
because in this deal are some things
[292]
that a lot of americans want to see
[294]
happen um it's not just a you know
[297]
left-wing agenda there are some really
[299]
common sense things around health care
[301]
and certainly the environment that
[303]
people appreciate so it's a this is a
[305]
big deal for the biden administration
[307]
now here's the rub here's the rub
[310]
how can they sell it how well do they
[313]
sell it
[314]
how do they make the case
[316]
how do they send it home
[318]
how did they get the candidates running
[320]
in these whacked out districts with
[322]
these whacked out republican candidates
[324]
on the defensive when they want to talk
[327]
about all kinds of crazy conspiracies
[330]
democrats now can look at those
[332]
candidates and go okay let crazy do
[334]
crazy in the corner
[336]
what we've done is we've provided your
[338]
family and your community and our state
[340]
an opportunity to move forward so it's
[342]
going to be very interesting to see how
[344]
they craft that message uh on this very
[347]
very significant opportunity and win
[350]
steve uh joe manchin is often uh the
[354]
target of a lot of anger from other
[356]
democrats around the country but getting
[359]
something like this through leading it
[361]
the fact that joe manchin a wildly
[363]
unpopular guy among a lot of his
[365]
colleagues who represents as a democrat
[368]
the reddest of red states
[370]
might he be you know just
[374]
the secret weapon for democrats in the
[376]
end
[378]
well look i i know joe manchin well i
[380]
served with him he's a friend full
[382]
disclosure
[384]
not only with joe manchin but with so
[386]
many members of congress it ain't over
[388]
till it's over uh and you are only as
[390]
unpopular
[392]
as it takes to do something like joe
[394]
manchin did and senator cinema to make
[397]
you popular again
[399]
most people knew that when
[401]
reconciliation was pronounced dead that
[403]
the obituary was premature that there
[406]
was still time to get this done that
[408]
there would be extra innings
[410]
now that we are and the time frame uh
[412]
for that was really where we are now
[415]
democrats could not afford to go home in
[417]
august without messaging to michael's
[419]
point now they have the message they
[422]
have the bill they have policy solutions
[424]
uh and joe manchin did come through for
[426]
them at the end of the day
[429]
michael since you are already on the
[431]
crazy beat tonight let's talk
[432]
republicans because while democrats are
[434]
addressing inflation
[436]
the autocratic leader of hungary was
[439]
riling up conservatives down in dallas
[441]
texas at the cpac conference today
[443]
here's a bit and it it pains me to even
[446]
air him speaking but a bit of what he
[448]
had to say
[451]
politics
[452]
my friend are not enough
[455]
this war
[456]
is a culture war
[458]
the globalist can all go to hell i have
[462]
come to texas
[464]
[Applause]
[469]
you hear that cheering it didn't stop
[471]
there he touched on several issues now
[474]
central to conservatives immigration
[477]
homosexuality and support for russia
[481]
they can't possibly say who was this guy
[483]
didn't know him there he was in dallas
[486]
getting cheered on
[488]
is this who the republican party is
[490]
today yes yeah i think we just need to
[494]
stop beating around the bush and
[495]
understand what our what our reality is
[498]
here
[499]
when a lot of people want to do a
[500]
one-off and say well it's cpac and cpac
[503]
has kind of always been a little bit
[504]
quirky
[506]
cpac launched the
[508]
opportunity okay hold on hold on
[511]
people can just get around that oh
[513]
they're just quirky
[515]
yes
[516]
yes come on you've heard that i mean
[519]
people say that stuff all the time
[522]
that's how they do the one off on cpap
[524]
oh you know they they're just they're
[525]
the young republicans and they're kind
[527]
of spitfire and they're a little bit a
[528]
little bit of this a little bit that but
[530]
that was not always the case
[532]
um and so when you you don't see
[535]
the ronald reagan's and the and the
[537]
george bush's and and and the leadership
[540]
of the party
[541]
going there flocking there setting the
[544]
tone and carrying a message uh to the
[547]
country what you see now is a bunch of
[550]
fruit loops uh in a room uh just
[554]
cheering each other on and now embracing
[557]
authoritarianism which is antithetical
[559]
to everything reagan and and and
[562]
republicans have said they stood for so
[565]
yeah we're down you know we've crossed
[567]
the rubicon so what's next what's next
[571]
is going to be what this upcoming
[573]
election is about because i'm looking
[575]
america in the eye and i'm telling you
[578]
i'm telling you
[579]
right what you hear in texas
[582]
is coming to a community near you it is
[585]
coming to a state near you it is going
[587]
to be a natural part of the ethos and
[591]
the and the the noise we hear in this
[593]
country if you don't get a grip on this
[595]
now don't just think this is a
[597]
republican part problem because it is
[600]
not exclusively republican all right so
[603]
the reality is out there that we all
[605]
need to guard against this authoritarian
[608]
effort that is yes born out of the
[611]
republican party unfortunately but it is
[615]
but it's now incumbent on the rest of us
[617]
my friend steve and others to lock arms
[619]
together and create a united front
[622]
against this autocratic bs
[625]
because it is not american it is
[627]
certainly not conservative
[630]
then steve you ran the d triple c how
[632]
did democrats sound the alarm and
[635]
message against this the average
[637]
american doesn't know who orban is they
[640]
might not even know anything about cpac
[642]
but to michael's point this conversation
[645]
this these politics
[646]
they're coming to a community near you
[648]
exactly exactly michael is so right and
[650]
ronald reagan has to be spinning in his
[653]
grave
[654]
at the prospect of of
[656]
the conservative movement that used to
[659]
be the bulwark against tyranny in the
[661]
world giving the stage to a tyrant who
[665]
endorses and supports vladimir putin
[668]
and engages in the kind of invective
[670]
that the nazis engaged in in the 1930s
[673]
and 1940.
[675]
my producer is yelling that we have to
[676]
go but i can't i have to interrupt you
[678]
this argument ronald reagan must be
[681]
spinning in his grave baloney there are
[683]
republicans in congress right now saying
[685]
nothing what is mitt romney saying about
[687]
this absolutely nothing what is former
[690]
president george w bush saying about
[691]
this absolutely nothing so hearing this
[694]
like ronald reagan would be devastated
[696]
where are the living breathing
[697]
republicans today who subscribe to
[700]
ronald reagan politics warning this
[702]
country you can liz cheney and maybe
[704]
eight others
[708]
yeah
[709]
what do you say what
[711]
what he said
[713]
yeah all right that's about right what
[716]
he said mitt romney i'm looking at you
[719]
michael steele steve israel thank you
[720]
for joining tonight
[729]
[Music]
[741]
you
