Channel: unknown
[0]
hi everyone my name is Angan and i'm a lab聽
assistant at the color center of finance聽聽
[6]
today i'll be covering 10 bloomberg functions聽
that will help you get started with the bloomberg聽聽
[10]
terminal and also help you with聽
company and market research process聽聽
[16]
to start off what is the bloomberg terminal the聽
bloomberg terminal is one of the most commonly聽聽
[22]
used investment research platform it is a great聽
tool to stay up to date with the markets and find聽聽
[27]
financial economic and market research related聽
data as you can see in the screen the bloomberg聽聽
[34]
terminal might look a bit unusual and intimidating聽
in the beginning but it is actually a very easy to聽聽
[39]
use platform the good news is all babson students聽
can access a course offered by bloomberg called聽聽
[46]
bloomberg market concepts which will guide you聽
through the basic uses of bloomberg you will聽聽
[51]
also receive a certification from bloomberg if聽
you complete the course the entire course takes聽聽
[57]
about eight hours to complete and the course聽
can be accessed through your personal computer聽聽
[64]
once you have registered an account through the聽
bloomberg terminal in cutler center please contact聽聽
[70]
the cutler center if you have any questions聽
regarding the bloomberg market concepts course聽聽
[76]
today i will show you 10 bloomberg functions that聽
have been very helpful in my investment research聽聽
[82]
process this will help you understand how powerful聽
bloomberg is as an investment research platform聽聽
[89]
this tutorial is also a great place to start聽
but again i highly encourage you to take the聽聽
[95]
bloomberg market concepts course to have a more聽
in-depth understanding of the bloomberg terminal
[103]
once you have created an account with bloomberg聽
you can enter your login credentials to log聽聽
[109]
into bloomberg and you will be redirected to the聽
shared page the way bloomberg works is there is a聽聽
[117]
text box at the upper left corner of the screen聽
you have to type in different functions here聽聽
[122]
and bloomberg will return related information for聽
today's tutorial i'll be covering mostly functions聽聽
[129]
related to equities and in order to use any of聽
the equity related functions you have to first聽聽
[135]
go to the equity and for today's tutorial i聽
will be using apple as an example so in order to聽聽
[142]
use any of the equity related function i聽
have to go to the equity first which is聽聽
[149]
apple us equity and you can see once i start聽
typing in something in the text box bloomberg聽聽
[156]
starts giving me different suggestions and i'm聽
trying to go to the apple u.s equity security so聽聽
[162]
i go to this that suggestion and click enter and聽
once i go to the apple us equity bloomberg gives聽聽
[170]
me this related functions menu and what this聽
menu is showing me different functions and a聽聽
[175]
brief description of what that function does so聽
here i can see the first function is des and the聽聽
[185]
description is it's it gives you a security聽
description so let me type in bes and press enter聽聽
[193]
you can also click into clicking on des from聽
the related functions and and here is a note聽聽
[203]
the related functions menu always stays at the聽
top so you can always click there to see it聽聽
[210]
so here in the des function you can see that聽
the security description provides me with a very聽聽
[218]
brief company description overview of the stock聽
performance some estimates and ratios and also聽聽
[227]
some contact information so this is a very useful聽
function if you do not know much about the company聽聽
[234]
and you want to learn what they do where they're聽
located and where their customers are what are聽聽
[241]
their different product segments this is a good聽
place to come to to learn about the company
[251]
the next function that we're going to look聽
at is fa fa stands for financial analysis聽聽
[258]
and the stock gives you a more detailed聽
view of the financials of a company聽聽
[263]
so for apple the first page聽
we can see are the key stats聽聽
[267]
which present some of the main income statement聽
lines and how they have been performing over
[274]
over a certain historical period you can also聽
look at the income statement of a company the聽聽
[280]
balance sheet cash flow over here with the fa聽
function and more importantly something what you聽聽
[288]
which you can very easily find in bloomberg聽
is the different segment related revenues聽聽
[295]
so here you can see once i go to segment uh聽
bloomberg is listing out all the revenues聽聽
[303]
related to different product lines so here we can聽
see 85 of apple's revenues are from its product聽聽
[310]
and the rest 15 are from services and also 62聽
percent of us if it's revenues are from iphones聽聽
[318]
so this is a good place if you want to聽
learn more in detail about the financials of聽聽
[323]
a company here you can also see that you it is聽
the revenues are also segmented by geography so聽聽
[333]
this is also very useful if you want to learn聽
how the geographical presence of a company is聽聽
[341]
the next function that i'm going to discuss is聽
eqrv eqrv stands for equity related evaluation聽聽
[350]
so now that you've looked at the financials聽
of apple you might want to know who are the聽聽
[355]
competitors of apple who are which are which ones聽
are the comparable companies and how how apple is聽聽
[360]
trading uh relative to those companies so here you聽
can see that apple doesn't have many competitors聽聽
[369]
or comparable companies given the exceptional聽
nature of apple it is understandable聽聽
[377]
and we can see that apple's the the mean apple聽
is selling at a premium compared to the mean
[387]
mean of the ratios so that means that聽
apple is valued at a premium for some聽聽
[394]
reason compared to its competitors so as we as聽
we look at the eqrv we are already starting to聽聽
[405]
have some idea about the valuation of apple聽
that it is valued at a premium for some reason聽聽
[411]
so now the next function that聽
we're going to look at is cf
[418]
cf stands for company filings and the cf function聽
is very useful to find all sorts of information聽聽
[426]
filed by apple so here you can聽
file all the 10 queues 10ks聽聽
[432]
investor presentations and earnings call聽
transcripts everything that related to the company聽聽
[441]
like all sorts of information聽
that the company has shared聽聽
[444]
this is a very useful place if you want to聽
do a detailed research and you want to learn聽聽
[449]
uh what the company thinks about how the company聽
thinks about the future what are the risks that聽聽
[453]
the company thinks they have and what are the what聽
guidance they're setting for the next quarters聽聽
[460]
this is a this is the function that you want to聽
use which is cf which stands for company filings
[469]
the next function that we'll be covering is a聽
n r a n r stands for analyst recommendations
[483]
so what this function shows you is there are聽
many financial analysts who are covering the聽聽
[489]
apple stock and this gives you a brief overview聽
of what they think about the stock so here you聽聽
[496]
can see that out of all the 48 analysts who聽
cover apple 30 are thinking that you should聽聽
[502]
still buy it 11 think that you should hold it if聽
you have already have it in the portfolio but not聽聽
[508]
buy it anymore and three thing that you should聽
sell the stock and you can see how like all the 49聽聽
[515]
48 analysts and their research over here so聽
this is a brief overview of their research and聽聽
[525]
like they did you can see the price target聽
of each of the analysts are listed here and聽聽
[532]
bloomberg also gives some ranks based on聽
the analyst predictions and performance聽聽
[538]
but if you want to know more about their research聽
in depth the function that you need to use is brc
[550]
brc gives you most of the research聽
reports available for apple or the聽聽
[558]
company that you're researching so i聽
can i can go to any of these reports聽聽
[566]
and for example this is the report聽
by jpmorgan and it's showing me聽聽
[571]
why the analyst thinks the price target is聽
whatever he's suggesting and why he thinks it's a聽聽
[580]
buy rating why what what are the risks associated聽
with apple on based on his opinion or her opinion聽聽
[588]
i can see all of that using the brc portal聽
the next function that we are going to discuss
[598]
is
[602]
cn
[606]
cn stands for individual company news and聽
once you have looked at the analyst reports聽聽
[614]
that gives you a more more of an analysis of what聽
the analysts think about the stock but if you聽聽
[620]
just want to find more of the latest news about聽
apple cn is the function that you need to use cn聽聽
[628]
is is a place where bloomberg aggregates all sorts聽
of news related to the equity you're looking into聽聽
[635]
and this is a great place to stay updated聽
with the company that you're researching聽聽
[639]
and and where you can find the latest news the聽
next function that we will be covering is dsco
[653]
dsco is a company document search function so聽
for example uh you you have looked at the company聽聽
[663]
financials you have looked at the company's news聽
but you don't you want specific information about聽聽
[669]
something for example you want to know more聽
about the latest chip that apple is making聽聽
[675]
which is apple silicon and you don't want to read聽
through all the all the file links or you don't聽聽
[684]
want to go through each of the file links and聽
search through them at a time so bloomberg makes聽聽
[690]
it very easy to find that kind of information聽
so what you have to do is go to dsco and type聽聽
[697]
in the sort of information you're looking for聽
in this case i'm looking for apple silicon聽聽
[703]
and i can look for exact match and you can see聽
that here all the documents where apple mentioned聽聽
[714]
apple silicon or is listed out聽
so i can go into each of them
[721]
and see what the analysts think about it聽
or what apple is saying about it from this聽聽
[728]
from the document search portal which is very聽
this is a very helpful place if you are trying聽聽
[733]
to find any specific information like the market聽
uh market share of a company or a new product line聽聽
[740]
uh you can pretty much find everything the company聽
said about it or what the analysts think about it
[751]
the next function
[755]
that we will be covering is not related聽
to equities anymore so this was the last聽聽
[762]
function we covered related to equities and now聽
we'll be covering some functions which are more聽聽
[768]
about the entire market
[771]
then particular equity so top is a very useful聽
function to stay up to date with the top news of聽聽
[777]
the day so if you type in top bloomberg will list聽
out all the top news news articles and stories聽聽
[787]
which you should look at for the day to stay聽
to learn about what's happening in the market聽聽
[791]
currently this is a good place to to know what's聽
going on in the market look at the headlines聽聽
[800]
without spending much time so this is something聽聽
[803]
i usually look on a daily basis聽
to stay updated with the market
[810]
and the next and last function that i'm聽
going to talk about in this tutorial聽聽
[817]
is the bi function which stands聽
for bloomberg intelligence聽聽
[822]
this is a very important function if you're聽
trying to understand an industry in depth聽聽
[828]
and understand what are the trends you do not聽
want just new sources you want some detailed聽聽
[833]
reports on that this is a very good place to come聽
so you can see in industries all the different聽聽
[839]
sectors are listed out you can go to each of聽
the sectors and find the industries there so聽聽
[847]
if i go to if i go to technology i want to learn聽
more about the application software industry聽聽
[857]
so once you click there bloomberg will take you to聽
this research portal where it will show you some聽聽
[863]
of the featured research and also an industry聽
outlook usually the industry outlooks are very聽聽
[870]
informative and detailed it shows you some聽
of the key stats related to the industry聽聽
[875]
some of the trends going on the outlook and聽
some information related to the major players聽聽
[882]
of the industry so this is a very helpful place聽
if you're trying to learn more about industry聽聽
[888]
and finally thank you for watching the tutorial聽
