bell so you never miss me post new valuable聽聽
[19]
videos just like this one and in this video聽
we're going to be talking about life insurance聽聽
[30]
now i already have a feeling that the youtube聽
algorithm is not going to like this video聽聽
[35]
but that's okay because it's a message that needs聽
to be heard anyway because this is a personal聽聽
[39]
burden at least on my heart at least because i聽
feel like life insurance is something that is not聽聽
[45]
i don't even say it's not talked about it's聽
known it's not some people talk about it but聽聽
[49]
when it comes to actually acting and taking out a聽
life insurance policy it's something that doesn't聽聽
[53]
happen as often as it should especially within the聽
Black community and other minority communities and聽聽
[58]
that is why i think it's especially important to聽
highlight life insurance at this time during Black聽聽
[62]
history month i know that the typical rigmarole聽
that i've seen at least in my circle is that聽聽
[68]
when somebody passes away immediately you see a聽
gofundme set up and i think i'm just so it saddens聽聽
[74]
me every single time i see that happen where it's聽
like this family doesn't have enough resources聽聽
[79]
to do what they need to do to move on you know聽
and to survive without this person even just so聽聽
[85]
much as to bury them you know sometimes families聽
don't have the money and it really pains my heart聽聽
[89]
when there are you know families who might be聽
able to afford life insurance who just don't聽聽
[95]
so we're going to talk a little bit about聽
our experience getting life insurance what聽聽
[98]
is life insurance why it's important and why it's聽
something that we think everyone should consider聽聽
[104]
so at its core what is life insurance life聽
insurance is very similar to other types of聽聽
[110]
insurance essentially it protects not聽
the person who of course passes away聽聽
[114]
but it leaves something behind for their family聽
for whoever needs to uh you know use the resources聽聽
[121]
that person provided in order to sustain you know聽
maintain their lifestyle there are different types聽聽
[126]
of life insurance policies there are permanent聽
life insurance policies those typically are an聽聽
[132]
asset to the person taking them out a lot of them聽
they accumulate cash value over time as you pay聽聽
[137]
premiums and the premiums sometimes can be a lot聽
depending on the type of policy that you have and聽聽
[143]
then there's also term life insurance which is聽
a really popular type of insurance especially聽聽
[147]
among younger people where you pay you know a聽
certain amount of the premium every single month聽聽
[152]
there is no value built up it just is you have聽
a policy for the term that you've set it out聽聽
[158]
for whether 10 years 20 years 30 years whatever聽
the term is of that policy then once the time is聽聽
[163]
up you stop paying if you don't die you just聽
stop paying there is no other value to you聽聽
[168]
it's it's just gone so that um in a nutshell of聽
the two basic types of life insurance policies聽聽
[174]
now let's talk a little bit about the process聽
of getting approved for a life insurance policy聽聽
[179]
and a little bit of our experience聽
going through it because we recently聽聽
[183]
took out policies for ourselves each person's聽
experience might be a little different but for聽聽
[188]
us and we're not sure if it was due to our age聽
due to the insurance company that we decided聽聽
[193]
to go with but we did not actually have to聽
do any sort of health affidavit or anything聽聽
[198]
like that i mean they they asked us some questions聽
about health but with some other insurance聽聽
[204]
companies you actually have to take a form to your聽
physician they have to complete it and sign off on聽聽
[209]
that and that is what the insurance company uses聽
to analyze uh your worthiness before it goes to聽聽
[216]
the underwriting stage yes so it's important to聽
know that in our case we are young relatively聽聽
[223]
healthy people no major pre-existing conditions聽
or anything like that that would disqualify us聽聽
[228]
from getting kind of the preferential rate to聽
life insurance we specifically chose companies聽聽
[233]
that did not require us to go through the聽
exam process there were a few options out聽聽
[237]
there but we specifically chose the ones that聽
didn't require that because especially in the聽聽
[240]
middle of a pandemic who's trying to voluntarily聽
go into a doctor's office right now they don't聽聽
[244]
have to not us so that you know that was great聽
they just asked questions over the phone and聽聽
[251]
it was fine so to put some more context around聽
why we think this is so accessible especially聽聽
[256]
for younger people of course the younger and the聽
healthier you are the cheaper your premiums are聽聽
[260]
we took out term insurance policies for on the two聽
of us and our monthly premiums you guys saw this聽聽
[265]
in our budget it's under 25 dollars a month聽
for the both of us for you know pretty long聽聽
[272]
term honestly policy of a few hundred thousand聽
dollars each so just to tell you kind of like聽聽
[278]
it is within reach for some people it's just聽
the more you know the more you can apply聽聽
[282]
um so that's basically uh you know our situation聽
one important note if you're trying to get life聽聽
[289]
insurance during this hair pandemic we ran into聽
a couple of roadblocks with that specifically聽聽
[293]
because of our honeymoon at first we tried to聽
take out these policies you know right after聽聽
[298]
we got married essentially and they were like well聽
do you have any out of the country you know travel聽聽
[303]
booked and we're like yeah and they're like聽
well that means your premium is going to go聽聽
[306]
up by this amount and we were going to be paying聽
that premium for the next you know few decades聽聽
[311]
and then like that doesn't make any sense just聽
because we had an out of the country you know trip聽聽
[316]
planned in the middle of the pandemic so basically聽
they were like you can either pay the premiums or聽聽
[321]
cancel the flights or wait till you come back to聽
take out the policies so that's what we ended up聽聽
[325]
doing was wait until we got back from our trip to聽
enact the policy so that we would qualify for that聽聽
[331]
lower regular rate so if you're trying to take out聽
a policy and you have international travel plan聽聽
[335]
it might present a problem and to break that聽
down again just to make sure that we're all on聽聽
[339]
the same page here the reason why the insurance聽
company was you know increasing those premiums聽聽
[344]
is not beside really just because of the聽
pandemic it is a higher risk for you going聽聽
[350]
out of the country and you know possibly聽
passing away out there and we have no idea on聽聽
[355]
international laws on death and all that sort of聽
stuff so it might have been a little bit more of a聽聽
[360]
you know difficult situation for them so they聽
were like look if we are going to take this risk聽聽
[365]
then you have to then pay more money so that's why聽
they were charging us more so when we got back on聽聽
[371]
u.s soil you know we could apply and put in our聽
application and then the answer or do you have any聽聽
[379]
out of the country travel in the next 90 days or聽
whatever the time period was the answer honestly聽聽
[384]
would be no so a couple of questions you might be聽
thinking of if you're saying well how much life聽聽
[388]
insurance like what should i actually do about聽
this information if i want to take out a policy聽聽
[392]
where should i look so getting a life insurance聽
policy is pretty accessible with these online you聽聽
[398]
know aggregators out there that's personally聽
the route we took is we just went online use聽聽
[402]
a very popular aggregator site that looks聽
for different insurance policies for you聽聽
[407]
and that's what we did and we looked we compared聽
and we looked for a couple of key things聽聽
[412]
so one the premium of course we wanted to be聽
competitive and on the lower end of the the聽聽
[417]
options you were seeing two we wanted to make聽
sure that it was a financially sound company we聽聽
[423]
actually ended up taking out policies there were聽
two different companies that our policies are with聽聽
[427]
and we wanted to look at the financial health of聽
those companies because the last thing you want is聽聽
[431]
to take out a policy like this especially it's not聽
like it's a one-year policy this is probably going聽聽
[435]
into you know decades in some cases where you want聽
to make sure that companies gonna be around if you聽聽
[439]
need to you know collect on that life insurance聽
policy so they have the ratings there and you can聽聽
[444]
look into more research as to what those ratings聽
mean most of them have like letter grades like an聽聽
[449]
a or you know double a whatever those ratings are聽
you can look into those and see what they mean so聽聽
[455]
that was the second consideration that we really聽
took into account when we were choosing policies聽聽
[460]
and third like we mentioned before ones that聽
did not require us to go in and have a physical聽聽
[466]
done in order to get approved for the policies聽
so those are the three things that we looked at聽聽
[470]
when we were comparing policies then you might聽
be asking well how much insurance do i need聽聽
[476]
and that honestly depends for us this really is聽
kind of like a star starter insurance as we're聽聽
[484]
kind of as i kind of refer to it as you know聽
just a few hundred thousand dollars each where聽聽
[489]
in the event something happens to us at this聽
stage of life where the other person is able to聽聽
[495]
continue their lifestyle and not have as big聽
of you know a financial burden where they're聽聽
[500]
able to live comfortably and really just聽
you know not be in a financial bind because聽聽
[506]
now we're missing someone's income so for us聽
that was just a few hundred thousand dollars as聽聽
[511]
you guys know the only debt we have right now is聽
student loans which die with you so it's not like聽聽
[516]
the other person would have that to pay really聽
it would just be you know maintaining the house聽聽
[521]
and maintaining their lifestyle so it's not to say聽
that this is all the insurance we'll ever get in聽聽
[525]
our lives will we get more insurance in the future聽
we might when we get less we might it also depends聽聽
[530]
there are some people who are wealthy enough聽
to self-insure where something happened to them聽聽
[535]
their family is straight and they don't need to聽
necessarily take off these huge life insurance聽聽
[539]
policies so really like i said for now this聽
stage of life it works for us but we'll see聽聽
[544]
kind of where life goes in the future and if we聽
do need to increase our insurance later on or not聽聽
[549]
but for now we also didn't want to overpay for聽
insurance like we don't want to be over insured聽聽
[554]
either because that definitely can be a thing you聽
don't want to have too much we don't want to have聽聽
[558]
too little either and bringing things full circle聽
back to that comment about how it affects people聽聽
[564]
that look like us right so again we are not you聽
know oblivious to the fact that there are people聽聽
[570]
out there who are struggling random pandemic聽
where there are people who have lost jobs have聽聽
[575]
lost their homes so we are completely sensitive聽
and understand that but the reason why we believe聽聽
[581]
that insurance is so important is because it's聽
really something where you're not thinking about聽聽
[585]
self you're thinking about the people that you聽
are that are leaving are coming behind you it's聽聽
[590]
about that child it's about that spouse it's about聽
that whoever it is if you don't have any kids your聽聽
[595]
parents your parents however it is um because at聽
the end of the day regardless of whoever you might聽聽
[601]
have uh that you are leaving behind you want to聽
have something so they can at least bury you at聽聽
[608]
the bare minimum so even if you choose not to聽
do an insurance policy like ikeva said if you聽聽
[614]
want to choose to self-insure where you have some聽
money put aside in a savings or a checking account聽聽
[619]
where if god forbid something happens to聽
you that it's enough to at least bury you聽聽
[624]
look into it find out how much the average funeral聽
cost is and if that's the route that you choose to聽聽
[629]
take if you're relatively young in your 20s you聽
don't have any kids there's nothing wrong with聽聽
[633]
that you know because most of your debts would聽
probably die with you i'm assuming you know but聽聽
[639]
when you have a spouse when you have children when聽
you have a home when you have a parent who decides聽聽
[646]
we depend on you our sibling who's depending on聽
you you want to like i said think about them in聽聽
[653]
in all that you're doing it's not about you聽
and something a story that comes to mind is聽聽
[658]
actually one that we studied in high school which聽
was a raisin in the sun where that black family聽聽
[663]
was able to go from struggling to actually聽
surviving and they didn't have you know the聽聽
[669]
insurance policy was what they were waiting on聽
to buy that home that is what insurance can do聽聽
[674]
for the people who you are leaving behind where if聽
you choose to have a larger amount of money where聽聽
[679]
the house can be paid off where now there's no聽
mortgage to worry about for you know your spouse聽聽
[684]
or mom and dad or for your children where聽
that can go towards your child's college聽聽
[689]
fund whatever it is that you and your spouse if聽
you have children in that situation decide to聽聽
[694]
to do those are the type of things聽
that that insurance policy can help聽聽
[698]
cover or you know alleviate any issues like that聽
yeah so my hope is for a world where there's a聽聽
[705]
lot less gofundmes out there that seems to just be聽
the default answer whenever somebody passes away聽聽
[711]
where we're seeing a lot less of that and a lot聽
more generational wealth being created through聽聽
[715]
life insurance so thank you so much for watching聽
