Channel: Strictly Credit Cards

[0]
hey I'm Adam just go in this is strictly
[2]
credit cards where we talk about
[3]
strictly credit cards subscribe why
[6]
don't you in this video we are going to
[8]
review the best buy credit cards we're
[10]
gonna look at the rewards the financing
[12]
offers what credit score you might need
[14]
all of that good stuff so Best Buy has a
[18]
credit card program in partnership with
[21]
Citibank so city is the actual issuer of
[23]
the Best Buy credit cards and what you
[26]
can get out of this program is obviously
[29]
credit to buy Best Buy things as well as
[32]
potentially things outside of Best Buy
[34]
you can earn reward points that will be
[37]
eventually redeemed toward future Best
[41]
Buy purchases or you can choose to use
[44]
the card to get 0% financing on larger
[48]
purchases that you make at Best Buy
[50]
right before we look at the rewards and
[52]
the financing let's look at the
[54]
application process because there are
[55]
three best buy credit cards that you
[57]
potentially could get approved for the
[59]
first one is the my best buy platinum
[62]
visa which can be used at Best Buy but
[64]
also anywhere else that visa is accepted
[66]
if you're not approved for that one you
[68]
may be offered the my best buy credit
[71]
card that is a store only card can only
[73]
be used at Best Buy if you can't qualify
[75]
for that card either you may be offered
[78]
the best buy gold visa which has a $59
[82]
annual fee unlike the first two cards
[84]
that have no annual fee for the most
[87]
part I would say you know skip that $59
[90]
gold visa unless you have a you know bad
[93]
credit history and feel like this is a
[95]
card that maybe could help you build
[96]
credit history and maybe you've had
[98]
trouble getting approved otherwise but
[101]
really if you can't get approved for
[102]
those first two cards the $59 gold visa
[104]
is not one that I would really suggest
[107]
anyway when you apply online they're
[109]
first going to consider you for that
[110]
platinum visa if you don't qualify they
[113]
would go on to the store card and then
[114]
the gold visa in-store I have heard that
[116]
you sort of have the choice you can
[118]
choose to go straight for the store only
[121]
card if you want to if you don't want a
[122]
visa
[124]
I think most people probably want the
[125]
visa and not the store only card but
[127]
that's kind of how it works alright so
[128]
let's talk rewards Best Buy has an
[131]
rewards program called my best buy when
[134]
you get one of their credit cards you
[136]
are earning rewards that go on top of
[138]
that so when I tell you about what these
[140]
rewards are they are going to be sort of
[142]
the combined what you're getting from
[144]
the card and what you are getting from
[146]
the my Best Buy program so you can be
[148]
part of my Best Buy without getting the
[150]
card but the card is going to give you
[152]
more so if we assume that you have the
[154]
best buy Visa card you are going to get
[158]
a 5% reward on your best buy purchases
[161]
you're going to get a 3% reward on gas
[163]
purchases that you are making with the
[165]
card you're going to get a 2% reward on
[167]
dining and take-out purchases 1%
[170]
everywhere else in addition Best Buy has
[174]
some rotating categories things change
[176]
off and on in terms of where they are
[178]
going to give some enhanced rewards but
[180]
there's usually another category where
[182]
you can use you can earn a higher
[185]
rewards percentage as well I believe as
[188]
I make this video it is groceries that
[191]
you can get a little higher percentage
[193]
on but those will change so that is not
[195]
something that is set in stone just a
[197]
quick technicality here the rewards that
[200]
you earn on the best buy credit cards
[202]
are technically given to you as points
[205]
and each point is worth two cents when
[209]
it is redeemed so when I talk about a 5%
[211]
reward on your Best Buy purchases
[214]
technically you are getting 2.5 points
[217]
it really doesn't matter but if you
[219]
actually get the card and you are you
[221]
know kind of checking out the reward
[222]
program and you're looking at points
[224]
versus seeing a percentage or whatever
[226]
that's why it is happening so it's a 5%
[228]
reward but that comes in the way of 2.5
[232]
points per dollar on those Best Buy
[234]
purchases all right let's talk
[235]
redemptions by default in the my Best
[238]
Buy program every time you earn 250
[241]
points you are going to automatically be
[243]
issued a 5 dollar reward certificate and
[246]
that 5 dollar reward certificate is
[248]
going to expire in 60 days from the date
[251]
that it was issued if you don't want to
[255]
get a 5 dollar reward certificate that
[257]
is going to expire that quickly and
[259]
instead you would rather have the
[261]
rewards accrue for longer so that your
[263]
rewards to
[264]
ticket would be bigger when you are
[266]
actually ready to use it you had the
[268]
option to do that but you have to go
[269]
into your my best buy account online and
[272]
actually change that and say I don't
[274]
want the reward until some higher number
[277]
so by default it's gonna be that $5 for
[280]
every 250 points but you can change it
[283]
and obviously you'd have to spend more
[284]
at Best Buy or otherwise in order to get
[287]
to a higher level but you can have that
[289]
option to change it if you want to
[291]
another quick note here
[293]
Best Buy used to send out physical
[295]
rewards certificates as far as I
[297]
understand that they don't do that
[298]
anymore so they will send you a link and
[300]
you can find a printable reward
[302]
certificate or you can access it on your
[304]
phone if you're in a store and use it
[306]
that way when you redeem it but you're
[308]
not gonna have that mail option so if
[310]
you're the kind of person that maybe
[312]
would forget you have those rewards but
[314]
you know if it showed up in the mail
[315]
that would jog your memory and then you
[317]
would go use it that's not how it's
[319]
going to work anymore as far as I
[321]
understand it so you're probably just
[322]
going to get an email that says hey your
[325]
rewards such a certificate is ready to
[327]
go and then it's going to be kind of up
[328]
to you to remember that you have that
[330]
because you're not going to have
[331]
something physical in your hands to
[333]
remind you over and over again that you
[334]
have the certificate you need to use
[336]
alright one final note on rewards Best
[338]
Buy does do a little bit of an extra for
[342]
people that spend a lot of money with
[344]
Best Buy so if you have spent fifteen
[347]
hundred dollars within the last year
[350]
with Best Buy you would be considered an
[352]
elite member if you have spent thirty
[354]
five hundred dollars or more you would
[357]
be considered an elite Plus member and
[359]
you get a little bit extra for that so
[361]
if you're an elite member you don't get
[363]
a whole lot but one thing you do get is
[364]
points banking which means when you have
[367]
your points you don't have to set a
[370]
default that says I'm going to get a
[372]
certificate at X number of dollars you
[375]
essentially can just bank those points
[376]
for as long as you want to and then you
[378]
can really accrue them and use them when
[380]
you are ready to so you're not forced
[382]
into doing any you know default setting
[385]
and they're just going to get that
[386]
certificate sent to you whenever you hit
[388]
it if you are in Elite Plus you have the
[391]
points banking but then you also get 6%
[394]
in rewards on your best
[397]
purchases instead of the default 5% so
[400]
not a huge bonus if you are elite or
[403]
Elite Plus but a little something extra
[405]
par let's talk financing when you are a
[408]
Best Buy credit card holder you have the
[410]
option when you make a larger purchases
[413]
to take advantage of a zero percent
[415]
financing offer instead of earning
[418]
rewards on those purchases so as I make
[421]
this video there are offers of 0% for 12
[425]
months on purchases of $2.99 or more 0%
[429]
for 18 months on purchases of $4.99 or
[432]
more there are offers of 0% for 24
[435]
months on some larger purchases within
[437]
certain categories so sometimes a 0%
[439]
offers are store wide sometimes they are
[442]
within certain categories and the length
[445]
and type of offers can change as well so
[448]
I'm kind of telling you what's happening
[449]
now as I'm making this video but if you
[451]
get the car down the road there could be
[453]
other different offers as well now an
[455]
important thing to know about these 0%
[456]
offers is that they are what is known as
[459]
deferred interest offers and what that
[462]
means is that you have to pay them off
[464]
in full within that time frame that they
[467]
give you otherwise you're going to be
[469]
charged all of the interest that would
[471]
have accrued from the date of purchase
[472]
as if that 0% offer had never existed so
[477]
let's say you take a 0% for 18 month
[480]
offer on something that costs $500 if
[484]
you don't pay off that complete $500
[486]
within that 18 months even if you only
[488]
owe you know $7 more on the thing if you
[491]
haven't paid it off in full they are
[494]
going to act like that 0% offer never
[496]
existed and they're going to charge you
[497]
all of the interest that would have
[498]
accrued all those months since the date
[501]
of purchase so you have to make sure
[503]
that you do pay it off in full otherwise
[506]
you're gonna get all that interest and
[508]
it's all gonna show up at one time all
[510]
right so that's rewards and financing I
[512]
do want to take a step back for just a
[514]
moment and talk about two other things
[515]
with the application process and the
[518]
first of those is that when you apply
[520]
for a Best Buy credit card if you apply
[522]
and are instantly approved and you use
[525]
the card on the day that you
[527]
are approved you will actually earn 10%
[530]
in rewards on any best buy purchases so
[533]
a little extra perk if you use the card
[535]
immediately once you actually are
[538]
approved for it now the other question
[540]
that many people often have about these
[542]
cars is what credit score do I need to
[545]
get approved so for the best buy cards
[547]
like I said there are 3 of them for that
[549]
Best Buy Platinum visa if you have a 700
[552]
or / credit score I have to imagine you
[555]
are going to get approved unless there's
[557]
something you know very strange in your
[559]
credit report between 650 and 700
[562]
probably still approved but maybe
[565]
there's going to be some rejections in
[567]
there between 600 and 650 I think it's
[570]
going to be a little tougher to get your
[571]
hands on that visa but you would
[573]
probably be approved for the store card
[575]
now once you get under 600 that is a
[578]
place where there's no telling what they
[581]
do you're probably not going to get the
[582]
visa if you're under 600 you may still
[584]
qualify for the store card or you might
[587]
get offered that gold visa that has the
[589]
$59 annual fee these are not set in
[592]
stone numbers they are going to look at
[594]
more than just your credit score if
[596]
there's some other thing that jumps out
[597]
at them that would be part of whether
[599]
you are you know approved or denied if
[602]
you've applied for a ton of credit cards
[604]
in the last six months or 12 months or
[606]
whatever that could be something that
[607]
hurts you more even if your credit score
[609]
is a little higher if your credit scores
[612]
a little lower and you don't have a
[613]
whole lot of credit history but it's not
[614]
that bad
[615]
they could you know potentially approve
[616]
you for something a little better so you
[618]
never know for sure but those are sort
[619]
of some guidelines overall best buy
[621]
credit cards not a bad deal 5% at Best
[624]
Buy is nice if you have the Visa Card
[626]
you can get some of those enhanced
[628]
categories like gas and dining purchases
[632]
so it could be something that makes
[634]
sense for someone that really spends a
[636]
lot at Best Buy on a regular basis
[639]
however it's a very inflexible card in
[641]
the fact that the rewards you receive
[643]
are only on Best Buy purchases in the
[646]
future so for that visa for example if
[649]
you could get those same percentages on
[651]
gas and dining or some of those other
[653]
rotating categories with a good cash
[655]
back card well that would make more
[656]
sense because then you have a lot of
[658]
flexibility and how you use your rewards
[659]
with this card you could only you
[661]
them toward Best Buy on the other hand
[663]
if you could not maybe qualify for some
[665]
of the better cash back cards or other
[667]
credit cards out there you could qualify
[668]
for this one then maybe it would make
[671]
sense to get those enhanced rewards and
[673]
use them toward Best Buy that would be
[675]
up to you obviously certainly not a bad
[677]
card but not an everyday card for most
[680]
people so that is it for this video
[682]
thank you for watching I would ask you
[684]
again to subscribe and we'll see you
[685]
next time
