Willie Nelson Is "Chief Tester" at His Weed Company - YouTube

Channel: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

[1]
-Congrats. This past weekend,
[2]
you just kicked off the Outlaw Music Festival.
[4]
And this thing is going all over the country now.
[7]
You have June, July, September.
[10]
I saw you -- You parked your tour bus outside on 49th Street.
[13]
-Yeah.
[14]
-And there's like thousands of fans out there
[15]
waiting to say hi to you.
[17]
-Yeah. It's cool. -Yeah.
[19]
Do you like the touring life? Do you like the --
[21]
-Yeah, I enjoy, you know, living on the bus.
[24]
-Yeah. You do -- 'Cause if you haven't seen Willie's bus --
[28]
There's probably photos of it somewhere.
[29]
It is nicer than my first --
[31]
many of my apartments in New York City.
[33]
It's better than my home now.
[35]
But it's, like, the most -- It's beautiful.
[37]
And it feels like home, right?
[39]
-Yeah, it's kind of like, you know, my home 2.
[41]
-Yeah. You've got a good group of people
[43]
on the lineup with you here.
[45]
I know you've been playing with your family,
[47]
Willie Nelson and Family. Your sons are there.
[49]
Alison Krauss, Avett Brothers,
[51]
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats.
[53]
-Fantastic. -Oh, man.
[54]
-They're great. -They are bad ass.
[56]
That's fantastic.
[57]
I listen to "Willie's Roadhouse" all of the time on SiriusXM.
[62]
-Oh, do you? Cool. -Dallas Wayne is fantastic.
[66]
-He's great. -I love that guy.
[67]
But if he's watching or if you see him, he's the best.
[70]
And so I listen to the station all the time.
[72]
So I know you have this big tour coming up.
[74]
And I know if you go to willienelson.com,
[76]
you can check out all the stuff you can do.
[78]
Go check him out on tour, if you can,
[80]
because it's the one-and-only Willie Nelson.
[83]
I've got to talk about this, too,
[85]
because you're on the cover of a magazine, "Rolling Stone."
[87]
And it's -- Yeah, I love it. This is the weed issue.
[90]
And this is -- [ Cheers and applause ]
[94]
[ Both laugh ]
[98]
That is a great photo. -That's all you got to say.
[100]
-That's all you got to say. It is a great photo.
[103]
And there's a quote from you here.
[105]
It says, "Marijuana saved my life."
[108]
-Yeah. -Is that true?
[109]
-I used to smoke two or three packs of cigarettes a day
[113]
and drink whatever there was there to drink, you know?
[116]
And I had pneumonia four or five times.
[119]
My lung collapsed. I almost died.
[122]
So I said, "Wait a minute.
[123]
You know, I ain't getting that high
[126]
off them Chesterfields."
[128]
-Yeah. Yeah. Chesterfields. Wow. Geez.
[131]
-So I throwed out the cigarettes, rolled up 20 joints,
[135]
stuck it in there, and I haven't smoked a cigarette since.
[138]
-You haven't had a cigarette since.
[139]
Wow. Good for you. Now, do --
[141]
[ Cheers and applause ] -Thank you.
[145]
-Was that always the way it is now
[148]
or have you seen just the world kind of just totally change
[151]
in the past couple years with it being legalized?
[154]
-Well, yeah.
[155]
You know, people are kind of getting another look at it,
[159]
and one of the main looks they're getting is --
[161]
there's money in there, you know, so --
[163]
-Yeah. Once that's involved... -Yeah, yeah.
[165]
-Well, you have your own -- Is it --
[168]
-Willie Reserve. -Willie Reserve.
[169]
-Yeah.
[170]
-Now, I was lucky enough to be gifted this.
[173]
-You what? -Yeah.
[175]
-Yeah. -And it changed my life.
[177]
[ Laughter ]
[180]
Wow! And I really apprec-- Thank you very much...
[183]
-Yeah, my pleasure. -...for that gift.
[185]
Yeah, I was -- Yeah. Oh, I was floating for weeks.
[187]
I've got to say -- No.
[189]
And just to see that and to see the business
[193]
that it's become, but it's the quality that goes into it.
[196]
And you have assigned yourself CTO.
[200]
Is that correct? -Chief tester.
[201]
-Yeah. So chief testing officer.
[204]
Yeah, so you get to see if it's the real deal or not.
[206]
-Absolutely. -Yeah.
[209]
-I haven't run across any that I didn't like.
[211]
-Oh, that's unbelievable. -Yeah.
[214]
-Talk to me about your new album here.
[216]
"Ride Me Back Home."
[218]
There's you and a horse right there.
[219]
-That's me and old Blue. -That is your horse?
[222]
-Well, it's my neighbor's horse,
[224]
and I borrow it every now and then.
[225]
-And does your neighbor know that you borrowed his horse?
[226]
-Well, I'm not sure. -Yep. Sorry.
[229]
If you're looking for old Blue, Willie has him.
[231]
Don't worry about it. It's all good.
[234]
And why did you kind of dedicate this one to the horses?
[239]
-Well, me and some more folks, Habitat For Horses, a group,
[245]
rescued a bunch of horses
[247]
that were scheduled to be slaughtered.
[249]
And I already had maybe 15 or so of my own.
[254]
-Wow.
[255]
-And then I bought 50 of these horses.
[258]
So then I got a few horses. -To save them, yeah.
[260]
But yet -- Yeah, still... [ Applause ]
[264]
It's still not enough to borrow old Blue.
[267]
I'm just saying. I think you have enough there.
[270]
It's a beautiful record.
[272]
And it's new some songs that you co-wrote,
[275]
but also some covers.
[277]
I've got to say, your cover of
[279]
"Just the Way You Are," Billy Joel --
[281]
-Great song. -It is a great song.
[283]
But you do a great version of that.
[284]
I'm just like -- Wait till you hear it.
[286]
This is -- And I know you probably can't say
[290]
if you have any favorites, because it's like --
[293]
-Well, I do have favorites.
[294]
Of course, "Ride Me Back Home" is,
[297]
but, also, there's a song in there that Guy Clark wrote.
[300]
In fact, there's a couple of Guy Clark songs in there,
[302]
but one of them is "My Favorite Picture."
[305]
And that song is just kind of infectious.
[307]
You hear it and you want to hear it again.
[308]
-Yeah. -At least I do.
[310]
-Do you ever hear songs that aren't you,
[312]
but country classics where you go like,
[314]
"Oh, yeah, that's a good one.
[315]
I forgot about that one." -Oh, yes, yes.
[316]
-You do.
[317]
And I heard that when you go on tour, that, sometimes,
[319]
you go, "I don't really know what I'm going to play.
[321]
I'm just going to do --
[322]
I start with this song, end with this song.
[324]
We'll just have fun." -Well, I do.
[325]
And I kind of go with the crowd.
[327]
And I know there's, you know, a few songs
[330]
that they've come to hear that I will do
[332]
before the night is over.
[333]
"On the Road Again," for instance,
[335]
and "Always On My Mind."
[336]
-Oh, yeah.
[338]
-But other than that, I just kind of let it happen.
[341]
-Yeah. And I think that's what's fun about seeing you live.
[344]
If you've never seen Willie Nelson in concert,
[346]
I can't even recommend it more.
[348]
He's on tour now. And it is unbelievable.
[351]
It's exciting, and you don't know what you're going to get.
[353]
And I just love you for that.
[354]
And, yeah, you know I'm the biggest fan of you.
[356]
So thank you for being here
[358]
and thanks for playing later on in the show.
[359]
-My pleasure. -We love you, buddy.
[360]
Willie Nelson. [ Cheers and applause ]
