before we have the news of aretha
[2]
franklin's passing we had planned this
[4]
show on what happens after we die and as
[7]
we mourn the Queen of Soul it seems a
[9]
particularly good time to ask is there
[11]
something more something on the other
[13]
side Today Show tries to answer those
[16]
questions my first guest
[18]
sherry ma was rushed to the hospital
[20]
after weeks of feeling short of breath
[22]
just 10 minutes after she arrived she
[25]
flatlined in her husband's arms sherry
[28]
was dead
[30]
for 90 minutes but miraculously came
[35]
back to life and now has a profound
[37]
near-death experience to share watch in
[43]
early 2008 sherry ma was living life to
[46]
the fullest I really was living a really
[50]
wonderful life in my 20s making good
[53]
money experiencing freedom and really
[57]
feeling on top of the world
[59]
Sherry's good life came to a halt later
[62]
that year when she was diagnosed with
[65]
Hodgkin's lymphoma he waited till the
[67]
door was closed we both sat down and I
[69]
knew like something was up and that's
[72]
when he looked at me and he said you
[74]
have cancer she immediately underwent
[76]
for intensive rounds of chemotherapy
[79]
crippling her body and there's no words
[82]
to describe what that chemotherapy
[86]
treatment was like it was so extreme I
[89]
would not wish her side of that Sun
[91]
anybody after battling the disease for
[93]
three months her cancer went into
[95]
remission and she was declared
[97]
cancer-free it's an incredible feeling
[99]
to go in for those tests and realize
[104]
they're saying it's shrinking
[105]
but in April of 2010 sherry suffered
[108]
another setback
[109]
cardiac arrest the doctors were rushed
[113]
and they immediately performed CPR
[116]
within the first five 10 minutes they
[117]
were unsuccessful and were ready to call
[120]
my time of death one doctor ordered CPR
[123]
to continue he just turned into a drill
[125]
sergeant and he told everybody what to
[128]
do they did chest compressions for over
[130]
90 minutes still without success she was
[134]
put on life support then rushed to New
[137]
York Presbyterian Columbia hospital and
[139]
underwent open-heart surgery I knew I
[141]
was somewhere else I knew I had died I
[144]
would say instantaneously when I
[147]
flatlined
[148]
I immediately crossed over into this
[150]
other realm and I remember my body just
[153]
floating in like this white space and I
[157]
felt as light as a feather I felt free
[164]
sherry joins us now sherry thank you so
[167]
much for being here thank you for having
[168]
me
[173]
let's go to that moment in the hospital
[177]
where you were flatlining and they you
[180]
know they say that that's the moment you
[182]
you are dead if your heart is not
[183]
working if your heart is not pumping is
[187]
it true that they wanted we could stop
[189]
CPR and there was the one doctor who
[191]
said mmhmm yeah they were ready to call
[194]
my time of death everybody in that stuff
[196]
in that room in the emergency room they
[199]
were ready to call my time of death one
[201]
man in that entire room said no we're
[204]
not losing her and ordered everybody
[206]
like a drill sergeant according to my
[208]
father to continue with CPR and what
[214]
they had to do was continue it long
[216]
enough for him to actually install
[218]
temporary life-support what is the first
[220]
memory you have of you know your
[224]
otherworldly experience yeah it was
[228]
pretty instantaneous for me I remember
[230]
one minute being in in this world and
[234]
the next minute being like I died I knew
[238]
immediately I was in this white space
[242]
where I felt like I was formless and I
[248]
felt light as a feather I felt free and
[252]
I remember feeling really free of the
[254]
burdens of everyday life there was there
[257]
a feeling of panic at all you know like
[260]
I've I've died oh my god I've died it
[262]
was more wow this is so beautiful
[267]
really yeah you remember that absolutely
[272]
and we're like was it one of those
[274]
things where you were above the room
[275]
like where were you seeing it wasn't
[279]
like an out-of-body experience I
[281]
literally was in a whole other realm so
[285]
I wasn't I was no longer in the physical
[287]
hospital room I was completely in
[290]
another realm I actually felt connected
[292]
to my family on the other side
[297]
and I felt connected to the heavens so
[301]
there was no distinction of okay I'm I'm
[307]
dead and I'm in this other world it was
[309]
more I just gracefully walked through
[312]
this door and made this beautiful
[314]
transition into another realm so there's
[319]
much more to her experience and what
[321]
happened in those moments including an
[323]
illumination on the life she had lived
[325]
thus far we're gonna pick it up there
[328]
when we come back back now sherry a man
[331]
who says she had a life-changing
[332]
near-death experience during cardiac
[334]
arrest when she was dead for 90 minutes
[338]
so sherry I I I know you've said that in
[342]
the moment it felt like you did a life
[344]
review what does that mean yeah it's
[348]
it's funny because it actually wasn't
[350]
just a life review of my current life it
[353]
was actually a life review of any
[357]
experience my soul had ever undergone so
[362]
which is so crazy it was so crazy to me
[365]
did you believe in past lives prior to
[367]
that moment I really I didn't think
[370]
anything I really didn't even know what
[372]
a near-death experience was until I got
[374]
back so I this was all very foreign to
[379]
me
[380]
I had heard maybe of people that had had
[383]
an out-of-body experience I did not know
[385]
at this math so yeah I mean this was
[389]
this was definitely very very foreign
[392]
for me
[392]
and do you feel like you got a window
[394]
into prior lives absolutely I mean the
[398]
biggest thing that I really learned was
[399]
I learned you know sometimes we all have
[402]
like just this common reoccurring theme
[404]
that's happening in our lives whether
[405]
it's you know poor finances or a
[408]
relationship trouble I got to learn
[411]
during my lifetime reviews what that
[415]
comment theme was and actually how to
[417]
clear it Wow
[419]
because what it happened was it was
[421]
attaching to my soul yeah during every
[424]
lifetime
[425]
I'm sorry but I believe that but I feel
[427]
like that's part of karma yeah and that
[429]
you keep getting the chance to get it
[430]
right
[431]
and and you know eventually hopefully
[433]
you do and you move on to the next plane
[434]
yeah but I really think there's
[437]
something to that yeah the the notion of
[439]
being dead but not dead is confusing to
[443]
people and we have a doctor here his
[445]
name is dr. Sam Parr Nia a world expert
[447]
on the science of death and the author
[450]
of erasing death which sounds like a
[452]
great idea doc thank you for being here
[455]
so what measure how could she be dead
[458]
but not dead for 90 minutes well you
[461]
know it's a very good question of course
[462]
the reality is that we all have a
[465]
perception of death and this goes back
[467]
millennia which is essentially the death
[468]
is a moment there's a time when you are
[470]
either alive or you're dead and the
[471]
reason we think that is because when the
[473]
heart stops you have no more blood
[475]
flowing into your brain and sure other
[477]
organs the brain shuts down immediately
[478]
a person becomes lifeless motionless and
[481]
they are dead or even if you go back to
[483]
the French Revolution when you if
[485]
somebody had lost their head there's no
[487]
more blood getting into the brain and
[488]
Anna shots however what's amazing is
[491]
that about 50 60 years ago we discovered
[493]
CPR and we found that actually you can
[495]
artificially restart the heart or
[497]
produce a circulation get blood flowing
[499]
around the body even after a person has
[501]
died and that made our definitions more
[503]
ambiguous and what is now even more
[505]
interesting is that we understand that
[507]
it's only after a person has died which
[509]
makes perfect sense but the cells inside
[512]
the body start to undergo their own
[514]
process of death so when somebody's
[517]
heart starts stops it's only then that
[519]
the cells will start to die and that
[521]
process takes many hours possibly days
[523]
how has your outlook on death and life
[526]
changed as a result of this experience
[529]
I am definitely no longer afraid of
[531]
death and that was something that I had
[534]
feared my entire life yeah and what I
[537]
learned is that that fear of death
[539]
really prevents you from truly living
[542]
and so if you were to know me prior to
[546]
my near-death experience and now it's
[548]
like I'm two completely different people
[550]
because I lived pre pre near-death I
[554]
lived my life very all my decisions were
[558]
like beasts around fear fear of what
[561]
other people thought fear of what other
[562]
people would say you know fear of not
[565]
good enough or fear of of being unworthy
[569]
even though I was successful in my
[572]
earlier years every decision was still
[576]
based upon that now I flip the script
[580]
I'm doing everything they're making them
[589]
out of the wrong place I'm so glad
[591]
you're well you've got your new heart
[593]
yes look amazing and thank you for
[596]
selling and we're telling your story
