Option pricing is affected by several factors聽 including the price of the underlying interest聽聽

rates and volatility. Volatility is a metric for聽 the speed and movement of the underlying assets聽聽

and with all things being equal such as strike聽 price and underlying price. The higher the聽聽

volatility the higher the price of the option in聽 this lesson we will go over the trader workstation聽聽

volatility lab tools to analyze volatility聽 and how to enter an order using order types聽聽

designed to trade options according to volatility聽 levels let us start by bringing up the volatility聽聽

lab click on the new window button to the upper聽 left of mosaic and scroll down to the option聽聽

tools section select advanced option tools聽 and then volatility lab the volatility lab聽聽

will populate with the active ticker you may聽 change the symbol by clicking on the drop down聽聽

menu in the upper left hand corner on any of聽 the tiles the volatility lab consists of three聽聽

separate tabs offering tools to analyze implied聽 volatility historical volatility and by industry聽聽

comparison the tabs contain similar tools but with聽 different settings to give the user a variety of聽聽

data in one area let's walk through each tab the聽 implied volatility tab is comprised of five tools聽聽

they are implied volatility volatility profile聽 multi-expiry skew time-lapse skew and open聽聽

interest the implied volatility tool is located at聽 the top left corner of the screen this tool gives聽聽

you a look-back view of implied volatility for all聽 available expirations for a ticker symbol click on聽聽

the plus sign next to last trading days to select聽 the expirations you want to view now select the聽聽

time period you can choose one week one two or six聽 months one year or create a custom period move the聽聽

this tool is helpful in charting how the price聽 skew has evolved over a selected time period聽聽

in order to possibly identify a catalyst聽 that caused a skew to occur or disappear聽聽

such as an earnings event or news story choose聽 between several predefined periods or enter a聽聽

bottom right hand corner is the open interest聽 tool which when clicking the gear icon allows聽聽

now let's look at the historic volatility tab聽 by clicking on it at the bottom of the window聽聽

the historical volatility tab consists of three聽 tools historical volatility which is the same as聽聽

implied volatility but set to show historical聽 versus implied the volatility profile tool and聽聽

the time lapse tool each tool can be adjusted as聽 the user sees fit to get the desired time period聽聽

the implied volatility comparison tool is the same聽 viewer as the implied and historical previously聽聽

the new window area scrolling down to advanced聽 option tools and clicking on volatility trader聽聽

volatility trader displays the bid and ask聽 prices in volatility terms instead of premium聽聽

an option trader may want to tailor an order to聽 trigger only if implied volatility is above or聽聽

below a specific level enter a symbol select聽 option and choose a strike and expiration聽聽

the default order type is vol for volatility and聽 once an order is created you can select either聽聽

annual or daily to display the volatility of聽 the order in the column labeled full type the聽聽
