[0]
am I really experiencing this is this
[2]
just some horrific nightmare and I'm
[4]
gonna wake up there is hate and it isn't
[8]
going away it just seems to be getting
[11]
worse welcome back to hardware that was
[14]
rabbi Jeffrey Myers of the Tree of Life
[16]
synagogue in Pittsburgh responding to
[19]
the horrific attack on his congregation
[21]
this Saturday Saturday's attack took the
[23]
lives of 11 congregants make it the
[26]
deadliest attack on Jewish people in US
[28]
history in US history according to the
[31]
NA defamation League it's part of a
[33]
pattern however of growing anti-semitism
[35]
in the country in 2017 the number of
[38]
anti-semitic incidents Rose rose by
[40]
nearly 60% the largest single increase
[43]
on record by the organization by the ADL
[46]
over the weekend President Trump
[47]
condemned the attack as evil but his
[50]
critics say his off prompter comments
[52]
the ones that aren't being written on
[53]
the prompter have been more troubling
[55]
last week for example a rally in Houston
[58]
right here
[59]
Trump referred to himself as a
[60]
nationalist a term embraced by those
[62]
with a racist ideology they have a word
[66]
it sort of became old-fashioned it's
[69]
called a nationalist and I say really
[72]
we're not supposed to use that word you
[74]
know what I am I'm a nationalist okay
[78]
when Trump has continued to stoke
[81]
conspiracies about billionaire liberal
[83]
donor George Soros who was Jewish and
[85]
the target of one of the mail bombs sent
[88]
out last week here he goes it's become
[91]
radical resistance you ever see their
[93]
signs resist they say what are you going
[95]
to resist I don't know he'll go to a
[96]
person holding a son who gets paid by
[98]
Soros or somebody right that's what
[101]
happened I saw is there somebody and
[103]
last year after the deadly rally led by
[105]
white nationalists down in
[106]
Charlottesville Virginia this is what
[108]
the president said I think this blame on
[111]
both sides you look at you look at both
[113]
sides
[114]
I think there's blame on both sides and
[117]
you also had people that were very fine
[121]
people on both sides very fine people in
[125]
both sides we're joined right now by
[126]
Julie Yaffe a correspondent for GQ
[128]
magazine and Howard Fineman of course an
[130]
MSNBC news analyst Howard I want to go
[132]
to you about growing up in Pittsburgh on
[135]
squirrel health well Chris I basically
[139]
grew up in the Tree of Life synagogue my
[142]
parents were Sunday School teachers
[144]
there I was bar Mitzvahed there I grew
[146]
up in the the wonderful peaceful
[148]
sprawling Jewish neighborhood of
[151]
Squirrel Hill the time maybe fifty
[153]
percent Jewish maybe a little less than
[155]
that now but just a wonderful place to
[157]
grow up in a place where something like
[159]
this happening was until Saturday at
[163]
around 10 a.m. inconceivable I can tell
[166]
you Chris and we know each other well
[167]
there was no place in America that was
[169]
more American and yet more comfortably
[172]
Jewish than Squirrel Hill
[174]
that comfort is gone and the Jews in
[177]
America are now lining up with every
[180]
other group African Americans going back
[184]
hundreds of years Chinese immigrants
[188]
Hispanics you name it who have the
[193]
Native Americans who have suffered
[195]
violence for political reasons because
[197]
they're regarded as the other they're
[199]
regarded as something foreign something
[201]
not quite American I grew up thinking
[203]
that was impossible so said Julia your
[208]
thoughts I've been reading about you and
[210]
your experiences and
[211]
unfortunately tragically this is not
[213]
completely new do-right and I have to
[216]
say unfortunately it wasn't very
[218]
surprising to me I think people like
[221]
Howard blessedly grew up as Jews in
[224]
America where they did think that this
[227]
was completely unthinkable in America
[229]
and until Saturday's events it was
[232]
unthinkable I unfortunately came from a
[234]
place where it was far more easy to
[237]
imagine the reason we came to the United
[240]
States from the Soviet Union we came as
[241]
refugees fleeing anti-semitism was
[244]
because in the summer of 1988 my mother
[247]
was stuck in the cut in the Russian
[248]
countryside with me I was five my little
[251]
sister was six months old there was no
[252]
phone no connection to the outside world
[254]
and there were very persistent rumors
[256]
going around about a pogrom an
[258]
anti-jewish pogroms and riot and she
[262]
realized that she lived in a country
[264]
where the political climate had become
[265]
so permissive that it was completely
[268]
extremely plausible and that she didn't
[270]
want to raise her kids in a country like
[272]
that and watching my parents response to
[276]
and their heartbreak watching what
[278]
happened at Squirrel Hill my father
[280]
actually called it an old-fashioned
[282]
program has been frankly heartbreaking
[286]
Howard let me ask you because you are a
[288]
communications expert like I try to be
[290]
and talk about these code words because
[292]
I I guess I understand the nationalist
[294]
of National Socialism of course and in
[296]
the era of the 30s when he had fascism
[298]
they all call themselves nationalists
[300]
including a you know the guy in the guy
[303]
whose name escapes me right now from
[305]
Spain Franco of course and was Alenia
[307]
and they're all called themselves
[307]
nationalists and they were awful for
[311]
minorities but this thing about
[313]
globalist I didn't know that was a code
[315]
I did I didn't know this Soros was
[317]
particularly targeted because of his
[319]
faith his religion his Jewishness tell
[323]
me about those code words well Chris to
[326]
to Jewish ears and Jewish eyes the kinds
[330]
of words that lend credence to the
[334]
theory that there's an insidious force
[337]
in the world somehow not quite human
[341]
somehow not responding to your tribe
[344]
your family that somehow has no local
[347]
rules or Allegiance that's been the
[351]
trope that's in the accusation that's
[353]
been used against the Jews for hundreds
[356]
if not thousands of years and that's
[357]
something that even though I did grow up
[359]
as I as I did I know a lot of history
[361]
and that's all too familiar a sound
[364]
because it posits the local people in
[369]
the country as something different from
[372]
the Jews who often for many generations
[375]
have lived there and view themselves as
[378]
much American or Spanish or Russian as
[381]
any other person this is the conundrum
[383]
this is the threat this is the the
[386]
vulnerability that Jews have faced for
[387]
thousands of years can I add just one
[389]
quick thing Chris since I have a lot of
[391]
sources back in Pittsburgh I'm told that
[393]
on another network ie Fox they're
[395]
claiming that all the local political
[397]
officials including the governor and the
[399]
mayor etc are going to be with Donald
[401]
Trump if he goes to Pittsburgh tomorrow
[403]
I'm told authoritative Lee by some of
[405]
those same people and you should ask
[407]
Bill Peduto about this they're not
[409]
having any of it they they might want
[411]
Trump at some time they don't want them
[413]
right now while the Jewish families are
[415]
hurrying under Jewish tradition to bury
[418]
their dead we have the mayor coming on
[420]
in a moment that's straighten it out let
[422]
me go to Julia you know I thought and I
[425]
thought a lot about history
[426]
I thought World War two was the turning
[428]
point that was the assimilation of
[429]
Catholics and Jews that that's what we
[431]
got through the door because of all the
[433]
service our fathers and grandfathers
[434]
fought in that war all of them you
[436]
should see the star of David's over at
[438]
the Arlington Cemetery and all those
[440]
tombs it's unbelievable and along with
[443]
the crosses and I just thought that was
[444]
the door opened but now I wonder about
[447]
certainly not universally in this
[449]
country and it's interesting you
[452]
mentioned World War two because when
[455]
Donald Trump said that he was a
[457]
nationalist he didn't just off-the-cuff
[459]
say he was a nationalist he said listen
[462]
I this is an old-fashioned world at word
[465]
and I know I'm not supposed to say it
[466]
well the reason it's an old-fashioned
[468]
word and the reason you're not supposed
[469]
to say it is because nationalism led us
[472]
to two world wars and
[474]
tens of millions of people dead in
[476]
horrible horrible ways including in the
[479]
Holocaust so there's a reason for that
[481]
stigma and him kind of dredging that up
[484]
and applying it to himself as the
[486]
president of the United States as you
[488]
know as we used to say the leader of the
[490]
free world is frankly horrifying and at
[492]
that point I think the kind of the
[495]
racism and anti-semitism that he had
[497]
been winking at and these dog whistles I
[499]
think became a vuvuzela the one thing I
[501]
would add about George Soros when I was
[504]
a reporter in Russia I heard about
[506]
George Soros as quote-unquote pernicious
[509]
political influence all the time that he
[511]
was not Russian that he was nefariously
[514]
controlling all these people and
[516]
controlling Russian affairs with all his
[518]
money that was in Russia I never
[521]
expected to see it here
[522]
I mean you Howard is right it's a trope
[525]
that goes back hundreds and thousands of
[527]
years but more approximately it I feel
[530]
like it was plucked straight out of
[531]
Putin's playbook thank you my fellow
[535]
Americans for that I think we'll see I
[538]
hope this is a wine-off
[541]
I still want to mark believe in America
[543]
