Careers for Business Students (and what they pay) - YouTube

Channel: Kenji Explains

[0]
what's up everyone it's kenji here and in this聽 video i'm gonna be sharing five career paths for聽聽
[4]
business students it obviously also applies聽 to other majors that are somewhat related or聽聽
[9]
overlapped with business right so things like聽 management finance or economics are probably聽聽
[13]
also going to be applicable to this video so the聽 five that i've picked are management consulting聽聽
[18]
investment banking big tech obviously not聽 the software engineering side but more the聽聽
[23]
business side of tech as well as accounting聽 and then lastly we'll look at entrepreneurship聽聽
[28]
and basically i'm going to be rating these based聽 on five stars and the three main metrics that聽聽
[33]
i'm going to be rating them by or number聽 one the difficulty to get the job number聽聽
[38]
two the work life balance as in how many聽 hours they have to work for this job and聽聽
[42]
then lastly the pay right and i'll be getting聽 into actual numbers of how much each one pays聽聽
[46]
as well as bonuses and other things like that and聽 obviously these are just five career paths they're聽聽
[50]
by no means the only ones it's just five that i聽 thought would be handy to you as they're fairly聽聽
[54]
popular these days and if this video does well聽 um i will try to make a part two so make sure聽聽
[59]
you hit that like and subscribe button so the聽 first career path is management consulting and聽聽
[63]
if you don't know what management consulting聽 is it's basically just helping big companies聽聽
[68]
improve their performance in exchange for a fee聽 right so at its core it's just problem solving聽聽
[73]
and consultants are problem solvers in聽 that sense and some of the examples of say聽聽
[77]
things that you might be assigned to do or your聽 firm might be assigned to do are for instance聽聽
[81]
say bmw is considering entering a new market say聽 i don't know the bicycle market then you might be聽聽
[88]
in charge of researching if the market's viable if聽 it's something that's worth bmw moving into right聽聽
[93]
that's just an example obviously another one聽 could be something like hey we see our employees聽聽
[98]
on facebook aren't very motivated is there a way聽 to change the compensation scheme so that they're聽聽
[102]
going to be more motivated so you do research聽 on hey is a bonus a good idea to put in here聽聽
[107]
are stock options a good idea are things like that聽 right and some examples of the biggest management聽聽
[113]
consulting firms are mbb which stands for one's聽 mckinsey the other one is bain and the other one's聽聽
[119]
bcg boston consulting group those are by far the聽 three biggest ones there's obviously some some聽聽
[123]
other ones like oliver wyman or accenture and so聽 on but i'll be focusing on these big three for now聽聽
[129]
all right so the first metric is work life balance聽 and management consultants are known to work a lot聽聽
[134]
not as much as investment bankers which we'll get聽 into in another section but they still put in a聽聽
[138]
good say 70 hours a week which is definitely a lot聽 more than say your average 40 hour work week right聽聽
[145]
that said they also have to travel quite a bit聽 in that maybe they spend a couple weeks in a in聽聽
[149]
a month outside their offices in a hotel somewhere聽 basically because they're at their clients office聽聽
[154]
right so basically your client expects you to be聽 there throughout the week which is why they have聽聽
[160]
to travel around so much now obviously this is聽 changing with remote work and other things like聽聽
[163]
that but it's still fairly common for management聽 consultants to travel so for those reasons we'll聽聽
[169]
give work-life balance a two-star for now as聽 for the pay it obviously varies by location but聽聽
[174]
if you're looking at the big three mckinsey聽 bcg and bain they will pay around a hundred聽聽
[179]
and ten thousand dollars a year if you're in聽 one of the big us cities right so basically聽聽
[184]
90 000 would be the base salary you would have聽 a sign-in bonus of around 5 000 and another 15聽聽
[190]
000 depending on how good your bonus is right in聽 terms of performance but something along the lines聽聽
[195]
of 110 000 is not unrealistic to think of so it's聽 definitely a lot of money and here's a chart kind聽聽
[200]
of comparing the different ones out there and here聽 it's also worth noting that the usp is a lot more聽聽
[205]
than most other countries right like look at this聽 chart here where it says that the uk consultant聽聽
[210]
made an average of 46 000 pounds which if you聽 convert it to us dollars that's around 65 thousand聽聽
[216]
that said there's obviously cost of living tax聽 other things like that that probably are the聽聽
[221]
reason for the differences but in order to聽 compare well to other career options let's聽聽
[225]
break it down on a per hour basis instead of on聽 an absolute basis right so let's say that they聽聽
[229]
work for 50 weeks a year so they get two weeks聽 of holiday 50 weeks a year and as we said earlier聽聽
[234]
they work 70 hours a week 70 hours a week right so聽 basically gives you around 31 dollars per hour as聽聽
[241]
a salary which i think is fairly reasonable so聽 let's put a four star out of five for that now聽聽
[246]
in terms of difficulty management consulting is聽 definitely very very hard to get into especially聽聽
[250]
the big three as i mentioned earlier mckenzie聽 bcg and bain they're very very competitive to聽聽
[255]
get into they don't disclose acceptance rates but聽 i'd say it's well below the five percent mark out聽聽
[260]
of the applicants that actually get the job right聽 as for locations typically those locations that聽聽
[265]
don't just speak english so they have a local聽 language like say tokyo or shanghai are probably聽聽
[269]
going to be a lot less competitive because not聽 that many people speak both in japanese and聽聽
[274]
english or mandarin and english right as opposed聽 to new york or london where you only really need聽聽
[279]
to speak one language right and the reason it's so聽 competitive is because a lot of people want this聽聽
[283]
basically the job pays well the job leaves a lot聽 of options open in that consulting is quite a聽聽
[288]
vague industry so you can obviously moving to聽 other areas if you want to later on those are聽聽
[293]
the main reasons why it's so competitive and i'll聽 leave this free resource in the description which聽聽
[297]
is basically going to give you a breakdown of聽 all the necessary steps to get into management聽聽
[302]
consulting if that's the road you want to take so聽 in terms of difficulty we'll give that a 5 star聽聽
[308]
alright so moving on to the second career path聽 which is investment banking and if you don't聽聽
[312]
know what investment banking is at its core it's聽 two main things number one is financing meaning聽聽
[318]
you help companies and governments raise money聽 in the financial markets and then number two it聽聽
[322]
has to do with advisories so basically you help聽 them out and you consult them on things related聽聽
[327]
to money so for instance hey how much money聽 should you have in your balance sheet where聽聽
[331]
should you allocate your money other things like聽 that are what people typically pay them for and聽聽
[335]
if that's not very clear still you can check out聽 this other video that i made which is basically聽聽
[340]
walking through the differences between聽 a commercial bank and an investment monk聽聽
[344]
and to give you some examples of investment聽 banks the most renowned out there are known as聽聽
[348]
the bulge bracket which are basically the largest聽 investment banks in the world so think like hsbc聽聽
[354]
morgan stanley goldman sachs jp morgan bank聽 of america and so on and so forth there's also聽聽
[359]
some other more specialized one which specialized聽 ones which are known as boutique investment banks聽聽
[364]
and these are centreview lazard and others which聽 just basically specialize in one specific thing聽聽
[370]
now looking into the three main metrics when it聽 comes to work-life balance to be honest there聽聽
[374]
isn't much of a work-life balance typically聽 investment bankers work around 80 hours a week聽聽
[378]
which is even worse than management consultants聽 and if you want to see the details of that i'll聽聽
[383]
put a video up here this is basically out of about聽 my time at goldman sachs where i put in a good聽聽
[388]
80 hours a week more or less that also includes聽 weekends and as for travel there's typically not聽聽
[393]
that much travel that's something fairly unusual聽 in investment banking so for those reasons we'll聽聽
[399]
put the work-life balance at a one star in terms聽 of pay it's definitely very high and hence why you聽聽
[404]
have to worry so much so typically it's around 85聽 000 as your base salary on top of that you get a聽聽
[410]
signing bonus of around 10 000 and you also聽 get a performance bonus obviously dependent聽聽
[414]
on performance but it's usually around the 50聽 000 range so it gives you a total of around 145聽聽
[420]
000. as for whether that's a lot or not let's聽 break it down on a per hour basis to see聽聽
[426]
so if you work for 80 hours a week for 50聽 weeks that gives you around 36 dollars per hour聽聽
[431]
obviously it doesn't sound quite as nice as 145聽 000 but nonetheless it's a lot of money so we'll聽聽
[436]
give it a 5 stars for now in terms of difficulty聽 investment banking is definitely very very hard聽聽
[441]
to get into much like management consulting if you聽 look at this fun article by business insider which聽聽
[447]
is called the 11 things that are harder to get聽 into than harvard it does include goldman sachs聽聽
[451]
which is probably the most sought after investment聽 bank and it has an acceptance rate of three聽聽
[456]
percent now i'd say most other investment banks聽 aren't quite as low but they're still between聽聽
[460]
the three and five percent mark right so for those聽 reasons for difficulty we'll give that five stars聽聽
[466]
and i'll leave another free resource in the聽 description for investment banking i found this聽聽
[470]
one on the internet and it basically goes through聽 all of the different things that you need to know聽聽
[473]
to recruit for an investment all the way from what聽 is an investment to the types of interviews there聽聽
[478]
are out there so i think it might be useful to聽 you guys all right so next up we have big tech聽聽
[483]
and obviously as business students you're probably聽 not going to be working as software engineers but聽聽
[487]
rather more on the business side of tech right聽 so things like account management business聽聽
[491]
development finance accounting marketing other聽 things along those lines right and as for examples聽聽
[497]
i mean i don't think i need to give too many but聽 the big five or google amazon apple microsoft and聽聽
[503]
facebook right those are regarded as the big five聽 but obviously there's other big tech companies聽聽
[507]
that you probably use on your day-to-day like聽 snapchat or spotify others along those lines right聽聽
[513]
so looking into the metrics when it comes to聽 work-life balance it's actually pretty good聽聽
[517]
typically it sits around 40 to 60 hours that's at聽 least based on my experience at amazon as well as聽聽
[522]
some some of my other colleagues working on google聽 and places like that so it's pretty good i'd say聽聽
[527]
in that sense usually on weekends you don't have聽 to work unless you you've messed up or something聽聽
[532]
so for those reasons also the dress code usually聽 there's no dress code the offices are fairly聽聽
[537]
fancy because they're tech offices um sometimes聽 the food's even free so for those reasons we'll聽聽
[542]
give it a five star for work-life balance so聽 the pay package is a bit confusing in tech and聽聽
[547]
here's why it basically has three main areas聽 to it the first one is the base salary which聽聽
[551]
in the big cities say in new york san francisco聽 seattle it's around 80 000 then secondly you get聽聽
[558]
what's called the signing bonus which is actually聽 split into two two years which is i don't know聽聽
[563]
why it's a bit confusing uh basically it's around聽 25 000 for a two years so 12.5 for one year right聽聽
[569]
and then in addition to that you have shares but聽 obviously the shares are not fixed in value right聽聽
[573]
they go up and down but it's typically around the聽 50 000 mark that said you don't actually get the聽聽
[579]
shares on your day one instead they have what's聽 called a vesting period which essentially means聽聽
[583]
that you can only get them after you've worked聽 for a set period of time at the company right聽聽
[588]
so yeah even more confusing but anyways let's just聽 put a hundred thousand as your year one salary for聽聽
[593]
now and basically if you're working 50 hours聽 a week say that's the average of the 40 hours聽聽
[598]
and 60 that we've said before and then you work聽 for 50 hours that probably gives you around the聽聽
[603]
40 mark per hour right which on a relative basis聽 is definitely a lot better than investment banking聽聽
[610]
and management consulting so we'll put that聽 a five star for now in terms of difficulty聽聽
[614]
obviously software engineering is very difficult聽 to get into at a big tech firm but on the other聽聽
[619]
hand for more business oriented roles the truth is聽 that there's just not that much information on it聽聽
[624]
i even worked at amazon myself and i wasn't able聽 to gather much information about it so um yeah i'm聽聽
[630]
just gonna not be able to give you much data on聽 this so we'll just put a three star in terms of聽聽
[635]
difficulty for now all right so the fourth career聽 option is accounting and if you don't know what聽聽
[640]
accounting is it's basically the way for a company聽 to maintain accurate records of their financial聽聽
[645]
position so if they want to look at things like聽 hey how much profit did we make last year or hey聽聽
[650]
um how much do we have in sales how much do we聽 owe the bank again other questions like that can聽聽
[654]
easily be solved with accounting right so role of聽 an accountant is basically two ways the first one聽聽
[659]
is to find these figures so calculate them that's聽 accounting and then the other one is auditing聽聽
[664]
which is basically verifying that these accounts聽 are actually true and that they make sense right聽聽
[669]
so i personally worked at pwc as an intern as聽 an auditor and basically they would send me out聽聽
[675]
to a client say to the volkswagen group with聽 my team obviously and we would get into their聽聽
[679]
finance team and start to look at their accounting聽 rates so if everything makes sense or not and then聽聽
[684]
we would create what's called an audi report and聽 based on that we would certify that their accounts聽聽
[689]
are correct or their incorrect rate so when you聽 see big accounting scandals like those of wirecard聽聽
[695]
that we saw recently in germany that's basically聽 got to do with accounting and auditing now some聽聽
[700]
examples of the big accounting firms are known聽 as the big four which stand for pwc ey kpmg and聽聽
[707]
deloitte those are a big four um they basically聽 have offices really all around the world if you聽聽
[713]
uh live in a decent size city odds are they're聽 going to be there and they have around 200聽聽
[717]
000 to 300 000 employees so they're really聽 really massive and they also have some other聽聽
[723]
departments not just accounting right they also聽 do things like consulting they do things like聽聽
[727]
legal services transactions and other things like聽 that now when it comes to work-life balance i'd聽聽
[732]
say it's fairly similar to big tech in that聽 they probably work around 40 to 60-hour weeks聽聽
[736]
it does get somewhat busy during say january to聽 to march during that spring season and the reasons聽聽
[742]
that most companies are closing their accounts聽 and they're getting ready to file taxes and things聽聽
[746]
like that right but overall uh the pricks are not聽 quite as good as big tech in that you still have聽聽
[751]
to go in a suit because you're meeting clients聽 um the office is typically you know as cool or as聽聽
[756]
fancy if you will as that of a tech firm but i'll聽 still give it out of work-life balance let's say聽聽
[762]
a four-star is fairly reasonable so for the pay in聽 the big u.s cities like new york and san francisco聽聽
[767]
there's usually two main parts to it the first聽 one is the base salary which is usually around聽聽
[771]
the sixty thousand dollar mark and then you have聽 the bonus which obviously depends on performance聽聽
[775]
right but it's usually on the around the five聽 thousand dollar mark so it's 65 000 in total聽聽
[781]
if we put that on a relative basis to compare聽 to the other ones let's say they work for 50聽聽
[785]
hours a week and they work for 50 weeks that聽 probably leaves you around 26 dollars per hour聽聽
[791]
which is not bad as in you're probably not a star聽 from that but at the same time it's nowhere near聽聽
[796]
some of the other industries right so for聽 those reasons we'll give it a three star rating聽聽
[801]
now in terms of difficulty it's nowhere near as聽 competitive as investment banking or management聽聽
[805]
consulting and basically the reasons that a lot聽 of people think that accounting is boring i'm not聽聽
[811]
saying that's my case i'm not getting into that聽 but yeah a lot of people think that it's boring聽聽
[815]
and hence why it's not as competitive right so聽 basically if you have a good degree and you have聽聽
[820]
good grades odds are you'll at least get to the聽 interview stage so for those reasons when it comes聽聽
[824]
to difficulty to getting the job we'll give it聽 a two star all right so the last option in this聽聽
[829]
video is entrepreneurship and that's basically聽 just starting your own business right i don't聽聽
[833]
think i need to give many examples but some of聽 the more recent startups that went mainstream聽聽
[838]
include doordash that was founded in 2013 what聽 is there there's robin hood also founded in 2013聽聽
[846]
as well as wework which is founded in 2010. so聽 looking at the three main metrics when it comes聽聽
[851]
to work-life balance the reality is that as an聽 entrepreneur you're probably gonna have to work聽聽
[855]
a lot a lot more than you would in your regular聽 job at least if you want your business to do well聽聽
[860]
right um when looking at the successful companies聽 out there most of the founders said they did work聽聽
[865]
over 80 hours a week weekends inclusive and at聽 the end of the day you're only giving yourself聽聽
[870]
an advantage if you work longer right so for those聽 reasons um assuming that you want your business聽聽
[875]
to do well we'll put the work hours of five stars聽 as for pay it's hard to say most businesses to be聽聽
[882]
honest end up failing and so they obviously don't聽 generate any money right which is why they fail聽聽
[887]
but on the other hand if you look at the forbes聽 list most of the billionaires up there are company聽聽
[892]
founders i'm not saying that your company is聽 going to get to that level but there is the聽聽
[896]
upside potential that say your regular job doesn't聽 have right so for pay for now i'm just gonna put聽聽
[901]
two stars as it's probably more likely that it聽 goes uh bankrupt or that your business fails as聽聽
[906]
opposed to it say becoming getting on the first聽 list right and lastly when it comes to difficulty聽聽
[912]
entrepreneurship is one star mainly because you聽 don't need the permission from anyone to do it um聽聽
[917]
it's not like you need to get into an interview聽 or anything like that you just go ahead and get聽聽
[921]
started now i'm not saying that the business is聽 gonna do well obviously that depends on other聽聽
[925]
factors but to start it you don't really need聽 anything so yeah those are five career options聽聽
[931]
for business graduates um i do realize that for聽 salaries it's a bit of a rough guide in that if聽聽
[936]
you live in other cities that are not say the big聽 ones in the us they're probably going to pay you a聽聽
[940]
bit less especially because the cost of living is聽 going to be less right and the same applies if you聽聽
[945]
live abroad probably the us pays the most compared聽 to other european cities or cities in asia right聽聽
[951]
and also i do want to mention that if there's聽 any inaccuracies feel free to point them out聽聽
[955]
in the comments right i'll try to pin them聽 if i think it's correct obviously i want the聽聽
[959]
best information to be out there for you guys and聽 lastly i realized that most of the things that i聽聽
[964]
analyzed are more numbers oriented if you will so聽 if you like me to do more letters oriented type of聽聽
[970]
career options for business students so聽 those like that relate to say marketing hr聽聽
[975]
advertising other things like that do hit聽 that like and subscribe if the video does聽聽
[979]
well i'll consider doing it so hope you found it聽 useful and i'll hopefully catch on the next one
