Credit Card Payments Explained (Beginners Guide) - YouTube
Channel: Honest Finance
[0]
Now I know this stuff is boring but if you're聽
using a credit card you need to understand the聽聽
[4]
basics of how you can make your payments because聽
honestly if you're relying on the credit card聽聽
[8]
companies themselves they're not going to give you聽
much of this information in a way that makes sense聽聽
[13]
so i'm going to go over the four different聽
options that you have for your payments聽聽
[17]
so that the next time you pay off your聽
credit card you can make a better move聽聽
[23]
so as far as the payment options go every聽
single time that you pay off your credit card聽聽
[27]
you're going to have the option to pay a minimum聽
payment the statement balance the outstanding聽聽
[32]
balance or any amount and so we're going to go聽
over each of those and hopefully you guys can聽聽
[37]
make more sense of what they all mean so we'll聽
start with the minimum payment here because this聽聽
[42]
is always the easiest one to pay but the problem聽
is is that it's also the most expensive one to pay聽聽
[48]
because typically you're only going to be聽
paying about one to three percent of your聽聽
[52]
total balance as far as the minimum payment goes聽
but this includes interest so a lot of the time聽聽
[57]
this can take you years we're talking even more聽
than a decade to pay off your current balance聽聽
[63]
if you continue to only pay the minimum balance聽
because if you owe two thousand dollars on your聽聽
[68]
credit card and let's say your minimum payment聽
is only 30 bucks well in reality you could pay聽聽
[73]
25 towards interest and only five dollars towards聽
your principal balance every single time you're聽聽
[79]
making that minimum payment so as you can see this聽
could take a very very long time to pay off that聽聽
[85]
balance because you're paying so much interest and聽
so little towards your actual balance so my advice聽聽
[91]
is that you avoid paying the minimum payment聽
at all costs unless it's absolutely necessary聽聽
[96]
because honestly you do want to make that minimum聽
payment at least so that you don't accrue any late聽聽
[101]
payments or anything that's going to hurt your聽
credit score but that minimum payment is always聽聽
[105]
going to be very expensive and if you are only聽
making the minimum because that's your only choice聽聽
[111]
i would probably stop using the credit card聽
and get that thing paid off as soon as you can聽聽
[116]
now the next option that you'll have is called the聽
statement balance and this is basically everything聽聽
[120]
that occurs within your billing cycle which is聽
typically about a month's worth of spending and聽聽
[125]
when i say spending i mean spending on the credit聽
card returns and maybe even interest if you're聽聽
[131]
accruing any so basically everything that happens聽
on the credit card within the billing cycle聽聽
[136]
ends up on your statement balance now the聽
statement balance is actually the most important聽聽
[140]
one that you need to pay attention to because as聽
long as you pay off the statement balance in full聽聽
[146]
every single month by the due date then聽
you're not going to be accruing any interest聽聽
[150]
and so this is a very good thing if you don't聽
want to pay any interest on your credit card聽聽
[155]
as long as you pay that statement聽
balance off in full every single month聽聽
[159]
by the due date but just be aware that you聽
have to pay off that statement balance in full聽聽
[163]
so if you owe a thousand dollars on your聽
statement balance and you pay 999 dollars聽聽
[168]
by the due date then that one dollar that聽
you're leaving left over is going to open聽聽
[173]
up interest and now you're accruing interest and聽
usually the only way to get rid of the interest聽聽
[178]
is to pay off that statement balance in full by聽
the due date for usually a couple months in a聽聽
[183]
row and that's typically the rules that the credit聽
cards have so if you technically want your credit聽聽
[188]
card to be free to use then just make sure to聽
pay off that statement balance in full and that聽聽
[193]
is the main option that you always want to pay聽
attention to to have interest-free credit card use
[200]
now the next payment option is called the聽
outstanding balance or the total balance and what聽聽
[205]
this means is that it's your statement balance聽
plus any new purchases that you've made that聽聽
[210]
aren't pending anymore so for instance if your聽
statement balance ended two weeks ago and you've聽聽
[214]
made a lot of purchases since then then all of聽
those purchases are also going to add on to that聽聽
[220]
total balance or the outstanding balance now you聽
do not have to pay off your entire outstanding聽聽
[226]
balance in order for the credit cards not to聽
charge your interest you just have to pay off聽聽
[230]
the statement balance but if you really want to聽
go ahead and pay off that outstanding balance聽聽
[235]
and you have the money to do it then go ahead聽
because it's probably just going to be easier聽聽
[239]
on your budget and you can get more on top of聽
your spending as far as the credit cards go聽聽
[243]
now the final option you have to pay off your聽
credit card i would just call it any amount聽聽
[248]
and i personally use this all the time because聽
what you can do is you can select any amount you聽聽
[253]
want to pay towards your credit card so if your聽
statement balance is a thousand dollars and it's聽聽
[258]
due 20 days from now then tomorrow you could just聽
pay a hundred dollars as the any amount option聽聽
[263]
and now you only own 900 and you can just do聽
that as often as you want during the month聽聽
[269]
just to pay down your credit card so either you聽
can pay off your statement balance you can hit聽聽
[273]
it towards the outstanding balance or you can聽
just slowly get towards your minimum payment聽聽
[278]
if you're going to choose that option so the聽
main point here is that you're not restricted聽聽
[281]
just to make one payment per month you can make as聽
many payments as you'd like and you can make them聽聽
[286]
for any amount that you want to and you're never聽
going to be restricted to have to pay a certain聽聽
[291]
amount of money towards your credit card but i do聽
want you to be aware that all of these different聽聽
[295]
payment types are going to be a lot easier if聽
you're using the online services or if you're聽聽
[300]
calling your credit card because if you're just聽
relying on a monthly invoice to come in the mail聽聽
[305]
these payment options aren't going to be as easy聽
and you really need to be using your telephone聽聽
[310]
or the internet for this stuff to happen now聽
if you're interested in learning more about聽聽
[314]
credit cards like how minimum payments work聽
or how the interest is charged go ahead and聽聽
