Why "Missing White Woman Syndrome" Backlash is Growing, Gabby Petito, Joy Reid, Brian Laundrie, - YouTube

Channel: Philip DeFranco

[0]
(sighs)
[0]
- So I know that there's been murmurings
[2]
and rumors about this.
[3]
And so I kinda just wanted to address this
[5]
before it got any bigger.
[7]
Yes, it is true.
[8]
Despite me staying the contrary for two years now,
[10]
the Philip DeFranco show was actually shot
[12]
on a green screen.
[14]
And this is the.
[16]
(drum roll)
[18]
This is the real background.
[19]
(shocked gasps)
[20]
(applauding)
[22]
Just feels good to get that off my chest.
[25]
I just hope you guys can forgive me.
[26]
But with that said,
[27]
oh, you beautiful bastards.
[29]
Welcome back to the Philip DeFranco Show.
[31]
Hey, maybe hit that like button,
[32]
help support the show,
[33]
get some more common sense news coverage out
[35]
to the people of the YouTubes.
[37]
And while you emotionally recover from this grand reveal,
[40]
let's just jump into it.
[40]
You know, the first thing
[41]
that we're going to talk about today,
[42]
was one of the most requested stories,
[44]
involves the Gabby Petito situation.
[47]
Her disappearance, presumed murder.
[48]
Of course, the search now of her fiance, Brian Laundrie.
[51]
That's because in recent days
[52]
we've seen more and more people sharing their frustration
[54]
with how much attention this story is getting,
[56]
compared to similar ones
[57]
involving people of color.
[58]
This again, is being a growing point of conversation
[60]
on social media,
[61]
but also as far as the mainstream,
[62]
we're seeing the likes of MSNBC's Joy-Ann Reids say.
[65]
- [Joy-Ann] Now it goes without saying
[66]
that no family should ever have to endure
[68]
that kind of pain
[69]
and the Petito family certainly deserve answers
[71]
and justice.
[73]
But the way the story has captivated the nation
[75]
has many wondering.
[77]
Why not the same media attention
[78]
when people of color go missing?
[80]
Well,
[81]
the answer actually has a name.
[82]
Missing White Woman Syndrome.
[85]
The term coined by the late and great Gwen Eiffel to
[88]
describe the media and public fascination with missing white
[93]
women like Lacey Peterson or Natalie Holloway,
[96]
while ignoring cases involving missing people of color.
[99]
- In addition to that,
[100]
we also have stories popping up like Insider writing,
[101]
710 indigenous people,
[103]
mostly girls were reported missing over the past decade in
[105]
Wyoming.
[106]
The same state where Gabby Petito reportedly disappeared.
[108]
And adding, despite the extent of the issue
[110]
missing and murdered indigenous people
[112]
get less media coverage.
[113]
That article also noting that a report that looked at media
[115]
coverage found that only 30% of indigenous homicide victims
[118]
made the news compared to 51% of white victims.
[120]
With Wyoming survey and analysis research scientist,
[122]
Emily Grant, who worked on this report also
[124]
adding when the murders of indigenous people were covered,
[126]
the news reports were overly graphic compared to white
[128]
people. So, you know, regarding this criticism
[130]
that we've been hearing more and
[131]
more, a lot of the pushback that we're seeing
[133]
I'd love to know your thoughts.
[134]
Or in this instance, some claiming that
[136]
Joy Reid's MSNBC is actually kind of
[138]
being hypocritical here.
[139]
Right. Pointing the finger back as a
[140]
Fox News wrote MSNBC has
[141]
extensively covered the case and its website Monday morning,
[144]
prominently featured an opinion piece on the missing woman.
[146]
Fox News also characterizing Reid's actions
[148]
here as dismissing the focus on Gabby.
[150]
But also the kind of data that we've seen is that Joy Reid
[152]
and a news org as a whole can be inherently different.
[155]
As well as people saying that Reid was not dismissing,
[157]
but rather asking a question or saying the Reid is simply
[159]
asking, why is this happening?
[161]
What can be done about this?
[162]
While at the same time,
[163]
still acknowledging that what happened with Gabby Petito is
[165]
horrifying and heartbreak. And so yeah,
[168]
the question I pass off to you,
[168]
and I'm not saying that there's something inherently right
[170]
or wrong. I just,
[171]
I really want to know like what you're feeling when you hear
[173]
this being said.
[174]
Also jumping back to the core of this story,
[176]
which right now is the search for Brian Laundrie.
[179]
We're seeing a number of reports saying
[180]
that he might've been spotted.
[181]
And this is after a guy by the name of Sam Bass posted to
[183]
Facebook.
[184]
I'm not saying this is the guy,
[185]
but whoever was on my trail camera this morning in Baker,
[187]
Florida strongly fits the description of Brian Laundrie.
[190]
Authorities have been contacted but people in North West
[192]
Florida area, be on the lookout, right?
[193]
Claiming that he saw him around 6:17 AM.
[196]
And so with that, you have the Okaloosa County
[197]
Sheriff's office saying that
[198]
they're looking at the reports that he was spotted in the
[200]
area.
[200]
So it was an unconfirmed lead that the authorities were
[202]
looking into.
[203]
But as I was finishing up today's
[204]
show that the county sheriff released a statement saying
[205]
that they searched the area where the image was taken
[207]
extensively.
[208]
Saying they didn't find anyone or anything of interest.
[210]
This after using a drone and checking nearby farmlands.
[213]
And saying in a statement, there are no known
[215]
possible past or current connections
[216]
between Laundrie and anyone in this area at this time to
[218]
follow up on.
[219]
So unfortunately this leads seemingly not getting us any
[221]
closer to Brian Laundrie,
[223]
but just before today's show went up,
[224]
we had FBI Denver Tweet out.
[226]
Teton County Coroner, Dr.
[227]
Brent Blue confirmed the remains are those of Gabrielle
[230]
Petito. Adding the coroner Blue's initial determination for
[232]
the manner of death is homicide.
[234]
Noting the cause of death remains pending final autopsy
[237]
results. Though, notably is still at this point,
[239]
FBI Denver only naming Brian Laundrie as a person
[242]
of interest and asking anyone with information
[244]
concerning Mr. Laundrie's role in this matter,
[246]
or his current whereabouts should contact the FBI.
[248]
I know that's a lot to take in a number of different things,
[251]
but that is where we are right now.
[252]
And obviously we'll keep our eyes on this.
[254]
Then remember Dr. Allen Braid,
[256]
we talked about him yesterday.
[257]
He wrote that Washington post op-ed he's a Texas physician
[260]
who said that he performed an abortion of violation of the
[261]
state's new six week ban.
[263]
With one of the big questions being okay,
[264]
is someone going to sue him who is going to do it?
[266]
Because under this new law,
[268]
it allows civilians to file lawsuits against anyone.
[270]
Absolutely.
[271]
Anyone who helps a person obtain an abortion after six
[273]
weeks. And that would absolutely be massive
[274]
because it would be the first test case of the
[276]
nation's most restrictive abortion law.
[277]
And the big update today is there have now been at least two
[280]
lawsuits filed against Braid, but interestingly enough,
[282]
not by anti-abortion groups or even anyone in Texas.
[285]
One lawsuit was filed by Oscar Stilley,
[287]
which is incredibly notable because he's a former lawyer
[289]
from Arkansas who was disbarred and convicted of tax evasion
[292]
and is currently in home confinement serving a 15 year
[294]
sentence. While Stilley here is suing
[296]
Braid for a hundred thousand dollars.
[297]
He told reporters that he didn't have strongly held views
[299]
about abortion and that he filed a suit in part,
[301]
because as mandated by the law,
[303]
he could receive at least $10,000 if he won.
[305]
Saying here that he is not pro-life,
[307]
but the decision should be between a woman and her doctor,
[310]
even going on to add that it was necessary to challenge a
[312]
law on its merits. Adding if the law is no good,
[314]
why should we have to go with a very long drawn out process
[317]
to find out if it's garbage?
[318]
Then the second lawsuit that was filed against Braid was
[320]
brought by another attorney in Illinois by the name of
[322]
Philippe Gomez.
[323]
And there appears to be a trend because as it turns out,
[325]
Gomez was also disbarred in the state.
[327]
Though, he was disbarred after other lawyers
[329]
accused him of sending harassing and threatening emails.
[331]
And in his complaint,
[332]
Gomez who explicitly lists himself as pro-choice plaintiff
[335]
states that he believes Braid did not violate Roe V Wade.
[337]
And that the act is illegal as written and as applied here
[340]
until Roe V. Wade is reversed or modified.
[342]
And adding that he seeks the court,
[344]
declare the act to be illegal as written and or as applied.
[346]
With Gomez also telling reporters that he thinks
[348]
the law is a form of government overreach and
[350]
views the lawsuit as a way to hold
[351]
Republicans in Texas accountable.
[353]
Adding, if Republicans are going to say,
[354]
nobody can tell you to get a shot.
[355]
They shouldn't tell women what to do with their bodies
[357]
either. I think they should be consistent.
[359]
And so, boom, there we go.
[360]
The first challenges to this law are playing out in a very,
[364]
very unusual and bizarre way.
[366]
Also of note with this story,
[367]
I was very interested to know where you guys land on this
[369]
topic. And this morning on the community page,
[371]
I asked you beautiful bastards,
[372]
as well as to a smaller extent, greater YouTube.
[374]
What are your thoughts on this new Texas law?
[376]
And as of recording this 96% of you are against
[379]
the new Texas law.
[380]
With some of the top comments including.
[381]
There is no excuse for an anti-abortion law of this nature.
[383]
It's unfathomable to me that people can actually support
[386]
something like this with no exceptions for rape or incest.
[388]
Some saying it's just insane that the people that are suing
[390]
are outside of Texas.
[391]
And really hitting the nail on the head.
[392]
You had Hannah Wilson saying this law is just the appetizer
[394]
for the real challenge against Roe V Wade and the Supreme
[396]
Court and I'm terrified.
[398]
If you didn't get to take part in the
[399]
poll, if you want to make sure you never
[400]
miss that or a show text me right here.
[402]
8 1 3 2 1 3 4 4 2 3 and or too, feel free now to leave your
[406]
thoughts and opinions and those comments down below.
[408]
But from that,
[408]
I want to take a second to thank the fantastic sponsor of
[410]
today's show the new and improved phil.ting.com.
[413]
Cutting your phone bill in half has never been easier with
[416]
Ting Mobile's new, smarter plans.
[418]
And I've talked about it before,
[418]
but since switching over to Ting's unlimited pro plan,
[420]
I save around $42 a month compared to my previous providers.
[423]
It was incredibly easy and I have the
[425]
same coverage as before.
[426]
The only thing that changed is I have a lower monthly bill.
[428]
I can get talk and text for only $10 a month,
[430]
five gigabytes for $25,
[430]
12 gigabytes for 35 and even unlimited from $45.
[434]
Also Ting's flex plan is there.
[436]
Pay for what you use pricing model,
[437]
but even cheaper, it's just $5 per gigabyte.
[440]
And like always data usage is shared across all your devices
[442]
so the more phones that you have in one account,
[444]
the less you pay per device.
[445]
So whether you use just two or 20,
[447]
bajillion gigabytes a month,
[448]
there is a perfect Ting plan for you and your family just
[450]
head to phil.ting.com, but check your current phone,
[453]
create an account and pick the plan that's right for you.
[455]
And Ting simply sends you a SIM card.
[456]
You pop it in your phone and you activate in minutes to see
[458]
how much you can save at phil.ting.com and get $25 off your
[462]
bill. Then in celebrity news, it's popping up.
[464]
You know, I feel like we can all get on the
[465]
same page of the perks of
[467]
being famous. Pretty fantastic.
[468]
But also, it feels like lately there's just headline after
[471]
headline saying you don't want to be famous.
[473]
There are massive downsides that only get attention
[475]
now and then. Like y'all, I went to TMZ this morning.
[477]
Cause you know, sometimes I like trash
[478]
and the top headline when I opened it, I'll read it.
[480]
Ariana Grande's alleged stalker brandish knife threatened to
[484]
kill her. Absolutely horrifying.
[485]
You look into it further,
[486]
she had to file to get a restraining order.
[488]
Apparently this guy has been terrorizing her for seven
[490]
months. Reportedly, he shows up security says leave.
[492]
He has a giant hunting knife says I'll fucking kill you
[495]
and her. Absolutely horrifying stuff seemingly
[498]
happening so much.
[499]
It might as well be a searchable category.
[500]
They even have related topics right underneath.
[502]
There are stories about how that guy snuck onto
[504]
Rhianna's property.
[505]
How Kim Kardashian had to get a restraining order against
[507]
a man who sent her a plan B in a ring.
[508]
Also, hell, remember Kim Kardashian,
[510]
it's only been a few years now.
[511]
She got robbed at gunpoint and tied up in her bathroom.
[514]
Which one, I know a lot of people aren't
[516]
empathetic towards incredibly successful and rich people,
[518]
but no one should have to deal with that too.
[520]
And two, it makes me so happy that I have
[522]
just a minute of fame.
[524]
'Cause when your audience gets as big as theirs.
[525]
It's simply a numbers game.
[527]
Like just statistically,
[528]
you're going to have some deranged assholes.
[529]
But just to reiterate,
[530]
it should never get to a point where we're like, well,
[532]
that comes with the job. No,
[533]
regardless of your opinions about their work or their fame,
[536]
they're still people.
[537]
Then in fantastic news for Activision
[539]
Blizzard, things are finally calming down.
[542]
I'm lying. In the wake of their sexual harassment and
[544]
company culture, reckoning,
[545]
things just appear to be getting worse by the day.
[547]
Last week you had Blizzard employees suing
[549]
the company for worker intimidation and union busting.
[551]
On top of that, Blizzard Entertainment's chief legal officer
[553]
announced yesterday that she left the company on Friday
[555]
though. She didn't say why.
[556]
And now we're seeing in the news that the SEC is also
[558]
investigating Blizzard. With them throwing subpoenas,
[560]
not only at Blizzard,
[561]
but also several of its senior executives, including CEO,
[564]
Bobby Kotick. And now with all of this,
[565]
asking them to provide documents from board meetings,
[567]
dating back to 2019,
[568]
as well as the personnel files of six former employees and
[571]
separation agreements the company reached earlier
[573]
this year with staffers.
[574]
And it appears that the SEC wants
[575]
to get to the bottom of these
[576]
executives communications and how much they actually knew
[578]
regarding sexual harassment and discrimination complaints
[580]
With outlets like Kotaku, summing up the
[582]
investigation as the SEC
[583]
not necessarily trying to find justice for the victims of
[585]
the horrible abuse or that not being under the scope of the
[588]
agency's mission,
[588]
but rather looking out for company investors who may have
[591]
had a right to know about these allegations.
[592]
Meanwhile, we've also just learned that the equal employment
[594]
opportunity commission has been looking into allegations of
[596]
gender based harassment at the company since May of last
[598]
year. Reportedly there Blizzard is in talks to settle and
[601]
could pay millions to resolve the issue.
[603]
But also right now,
[603]
we don't know if the agency will ever publicly release its
[605]
findings.
[606]
So for now we have to kind of just wait and see what will
[608]
happen with what will likely be the continuing fallout in
[611]
the months ahead.
[612]
Then in absolutely massive international
[614]
business and money news.
[615]
We should talk about the stock market and Evergrande.
[617]
And so for those that never heard of it,
[619]
or maybe you've seen Evergrande in a headline you're
[621]
unfamiliar, it's a major Chinese real estate company,
[623]
but it also owns an electric car maker,
[625]
a mineral extraction group, a soccer team,
[627]
and the theme park. And in fact,
[628]
at a time it was a fortune 500 company, but for years now,
[631]
Evergrande has been accruing a massive pile of debt so much
[634]
so that it eventually climbed to a whopping
[636]
$305 billion or equivalent to 2% of China's GDP.
[640]
And as far as how the hell it got there,
[642]
that largely comes down to the company's business model.
[644]
Essentially they were incredibly aggressive borrowing money
[646]
and buying land to develop homes.
[647]
And while that wasn't such a huge deal to Chinese regulators
[650]
at first, last year,
[651]
regulators imposed the three red lines system on developers
[653]
and their borrowing habits.
[654]
Making it so that the more you
[655]
owed the less you'd be allowed to borrow and notably
[657]
Evergrande crossed all three of those red lines.
[659]
So regulators barred it from borrowing any more money.
[661]
So Evergrande is like, oh shit, what do we do?
[663]
We need a way to generate income if we want to stay afloat.
[666]
And so what they did is that they pre-sold more
[667]
than 1.4 million apartments that they hadn't yet finished.
[670]
So in other words,
[671]
Evergrande and stop borrowing money from the government.
[673]
Yes. But they essentially started borrowing from everyday
[675]
homeowners.
[676]
Asking them to go ahead and pay these major
[677]
deposits before their homes were actually completed.
[679]
And so surprisingly that ended up being a massive disaster.
[682]
Some people have been waiting now for years for their homes
[684]
to be ready. And in fact,
[685]
at one point Evergrande became so strapped for cash.
[688]
They forced their own employees into a corner telling them,
[690]
Hey, you,
[691]
the employee need to provide the company with a short term
[693]
loan or you're going to lose your bonus.
[695]
So all of a sudden you had these everyday people going out
[697]
and taking out loans for Evergrande.
[699]
And so with all that uncertainty and just general insanity,
[702]
Evergrande stock value has been steadily
[703]
falling for over the past year.
[704]
Down from around $4 last September to now just 30 cents
[708]
today. And to make matters worse, which is quite a feat,
[710]
considering everything we just talked about.
[711]
The news we're seeing now is that Evergrande likely
[713]
will not be able to meet more than $80 million
[715]
in interest payments due later this week.
[717]
Alongside that earlier this month,
[718]
they also stopped paying back the loans from its employees.
[720]
And hey, well obviously this is horrible news
[722]
for the homeowners, as well as the company's employees,
[724]
everyone could be impacted.
[725]
Like this could be incredibly far
[727]
reaching for one, if Evergrande defaults.
[729]
The banks and other firms that they owe money to will
[731]
potentially be forced to then lend less money out,
[733]
given that the company owes money to around 300
[735]
institutions.
[736]
And if that happens, it could lead to a credit crunch.
[737]
AKA companies would struggle to be able to borrow money at
[740]
affordable rates, meaning that some might be forced
[741]
to close up shop for good.
[743]
Two, the value of existing homes will likely to become
[745]
depressed. And since homes are such a valuable asset
[747]
that will likely lead to a decrease in consumer spending.
[749]
Three, all of that could have major global effects.
[752]
Hell, the Dow yesterday plunged nearly
[753]
a thousand points just as this news broke with
[755]
other major us industries also
[756]
seeing sharp, immediate pullbacks.
[758]
And so you have a ton of people asking is China about to
[759]
face a Lehman brothers situation or that in reference to the
[762]
events that caused the 2008 recession,
[764]
but all that said for now there's no major market crisis
[767]
just kind of jitters.
[767]
And while a full-scale crisis is not off the table.
[770]
Many believe that the Chinese government will step in to
[772]
bail out Evergrande.
[772]
Many calling the company too big to fail
[774]
with one analyst saying rather than risk
[776]
disrupting supply chains and enraging homeowners.
[778]
We think the government will probably find a way to ensure
[780]
Evergrande's core business survives.
[782]
Though, nonetheless,
[782]
nothing is certain it's possible that China could refuse to
[785]
bail out Evergrande to avoid what's being seen as setting a
[787]
bad precedent as it tries to reign in corporate debt.
[789]
But for now it's still pretty much all in the air.
[791]
We're going to have to look yes, a few days out,
[793]
but also specifically tomorrow.
[794]
And that's because Chinese markets were closed today,
[796]
but they'll be open tomorrow.
[797]
And that could give us an indication of what's going to
[799]
happen. Both regarding how investors are feeling as well as
[801]
what is the government going to do.
[802]
Also, hey, if you're thinking about diversifying,
[804]
because you're worried about the stock market and or you
[806]
just want like a $42 for free.
[808]
Head on over or just click the link to coinbasedefranco.com,
[810]
you sign up just for signing up for free.
[812]
You get $10 in Bitcoin.
[813]
And then a lot of people overlook this.
[814]
They have a rewards system where you just spend a few
[816]
minutes learning about crypto.
[817]
