How to Set Custom White Balance for Video with a Grey Card - YouTube

Channel: Think Media

[0]
today we're gonna be talking about white
[1]
balance and how it can actually improve
[3]
the quality of your video and I'm gonna
[6]
show you exactly how to set your custom
[8]
white balance in your camera using a
[10]
grey card let's get it moving you gotta
[12]
just press record hey I'm not a Moute
[14]
would think media and before we get into
[15]
this video all about white balance I
[18]
want to kind of explain to you guys what
[20]
white balance is and why it's so
[22]
important for your videos now in simple
[24]
terms setting your white balance tells
[26]
your camera exactly what colors are
[28]
accurate so your reds are gonna be red
[31]
your blues blue your greens are green
[33]
and whites are white that's why it's
[36]
called white balance so if you want to
[38]
get accurate colors when filming your
[39]
videos you're gonna want to make sure
[40]
that your white balance is set correctly
[42]
so we're outside now and we've set our
[45]
white balance to cloud in you can see
[47]
that the colors look really good really
[49]
natural and now that I've changed it to
[51]
tungsten you can see that the colors
[53]
just don't look natural there's a crazy
[55]
blue tint going on this is why you need
[58]
to set the correct white balance now
[61]
your camera's have some presets for
[62]
white balance and so if we look in this
[64]
a Canon menu we can see that it has some
[67]
for daylight we can see that there is
[69]
one for shade there's one for cloudy and
[73]
there's tungsten light now these are all
[74]
just set to different Kelvin
[76]
temperatures so daylight is actually set
[78]
to fifty two hundred Kelvin and cloudy
[81]
right here is set to six thousand Kelvin
[84]
tungsten light bulbs which is often the
[86]
lamps in your home that is sent at 3200
[89]
Kelvin so these presets make it really
[91]
easy for you to click on what lighting
[93]
you're in and the camera will
[95]
automatically adjust to that now this
[97]
doesn't work a hundred percent of the
[99]
time because if you're using LED lights
[102]
sometimes when they say 5200 Kelvin on
[105]
the back of the LED light sometimes
[107]
there's a pink hue or green hue and
[109]
they're not 100% accurate and that's
[111]
exactly why you would set custom white
[113]
balance using a gray card even if you're
[115]
filming outside sometimes the daylight
[118]
preset isn't 100% accurate because if
[120]
you're shooting in the morning or at
[121]
noon or at sunset the color is actually
[125]
really different throughout all those
[126]
times and so cameras just set the preset
[129]
to 5200 because that's a great kind of
[131]
middle balance for shooting in the day
[133]
it'll work most of time but again using
[136]
a gray card we'll get 100% accurate
[138]
colors so you might say hey Nolan why
[139]
don't I just use the automatic white
[141]
balance on the camera well the simple
[143]
answer is that when you're filming with
[145]
auto white balance the white balance can
[147]
change during your shot while you're
[149]
recording and you do not want that so
[151]
that's why I always recommend people to
[153]
use a manual or custom white balance
[155]
setting a quick power tip for you guys
[157]
is to set your white balance last the
[160]
reason you want to do this is because
[162]
when you're setting up your lights you
[163]
might use diffusers you might bounce the
[166]
light off a wall or maybe it's coming
[168]
through some curtains and all those
[170]
things that the light are passing
[172]
through or bouncing off of are going to
[174]
affect the color temperature all right
[176]
we're gonna get into the tutorial and
[177]
I'm gonna show you how to set a custom
[179]
white balance specifically on a Sony
[181]
camera and a canon camera but really
[183]
these things are going to apply to most
[185]
cameras on the market but first give
[187]
this video a thumbs up and in the
[189]
comments below if you use a gray card I
[190]
want you to comment yes and if you don't
[192]
use a grey card comment know and if you
[194]
don't have a gray card there is a link
[196]
in the description where you can pick
[197]
one up and you are gonna need this gray
[198]
card in order to set your custom white
[200]
balance alright so first we're gonna set
[202]
a custom white balance on the Canon 90 D
[205]
and the first thing you actually need to
[206]
do is take a photo where that main light
[209]
source is coming in you want that main
[211]
light source to hit your gray card so
[213]
Tony holds out the gray card we're gonna
[215]
snap a photo right here and we got a
[218]
good photo so we're gonna head into the
[219]
menu system and go over to white balance
[222]
and select custom white balance right
[225]
there alright so you can see it's using
[226]
the last photo that we took which is
[228]
perfect and it's gonna use that photo to
[231]
set the custom white balance and so here
[233]
we can see that it set white balance too
[235]
and that little icon there is the custom
[238]
white balance so now we need to go back
[240]
into movie mode and then what we're
[242]
going to do is hit the Q and if we hit
[245]
the K here this is where our white
[246]
balance options are and you see that
[248]
icon again for custom white balance you
[250]
want to make sure that is selected and
[253]
there we go we have our custom white
[255]
balance set Tony looks great the colors
[257]
look great now everything is going to be
[259]
accurate alright so now we're going to
[261]
use the Sony camera and we're using a
[263]
Sony a 65 hundred for this but most Sony
[265]
cameras
[266]
be the same exact way to do this so
[269]
first we are going to hit the menu
[271]
button and on the 11th page over we see
[273]
white balance so if we select that we
[275]
incandescent is selected causing a major
[279]
blue shift to this image so we're gonna
[282]
want to change this by scrolling all the
[284]
way down to custom setup now that we're
[287]
over it we'll hit the center button and
[289]
we see that it says to click the center
[291]
button again to capture data of central
[293]
area of screen so with the grey card in
[296]
the center of the screen with that light
[298]
coming in on the gray card we hit the
[300]
center button and boom it's set so now
[303]
we can back out go into our movie mode
[305]
and we can see that the colors look good
[306]
and everything is accurate that's it for
[309]
this video I will see you guys
