How To Create A Freelance Portfolio As A Virtual Assistant For Beginners With No Experience - YouTube

Channel: Le-an Lai Lacaba

[0]
this one i will focus more on virtual assistant because i have gotten a lot of
[3]
questions so far on how can you create a portfolio
[6]
as a virtual assistant hey guys and welcome back to
[9]
my youtube channel now my goal is at the end of this video is to show
[13]
you guys how you can create your virtual assistant portfolio now if this is your
[17]
guest's first time on my channel my name is Lean Lai Lacaba I am the virtual ate
[21]
I've been working from home since i was 15 years old and now run an outsourcing
[24]
company in the philippines and i post video every sunday and thursday on how
[28]
to work from home so make sure to hit the subscribe button right there
[31]
so you don't miss any of my videos so when it comes to working from home being
[34]
a virtual assistant is usually kind of the first step for a lot of people
[37]
because when you're a virtual assistant you get to try out a lot of different
[41]
skills because you're kind of becoming a jack or jill of all trades now i
[45]
actually did already a whole video on how to be a virtual assistant you
[48]
guys can check out right here but basically i want to make this video
[51]
specifically on how you can get started on
[54]
a portfolio as a virtual assistant now i already did a huge video on how to
[58]
create your digital portfolio which you can check out right here
[60]
but for this one i will focus more on virtual assistant because i have gotten
[64]
a lot of questions so far on how can you create a portfolio
[68]
as a virtual assistant unlike other job positions when you're starting out
[71]
being a va is a little bit harder to really define
[74]
because there's a ton of services that you can find out about it some of it
[78]
could be bookkeeping you could be doing graphic work you can be doing some
[81]
writing you could be managing ads as well so it
[84]
really is just a huge scope of tasks and one of the first things
[88]
that you need to do when you're building out that portfolio
[91]
is to define who you are that means is narrowing down what
[94]
kind of skills or services do you want to offer as a virtual assistant now i
[99]
already did a video on virtual assistant services so you guys can check out right
[102]
here but basically you want to figure out
[103]
like okay do i want to focus more on the admin tasks do i want to focus on
[107]
whatever my boss is currently focusing on right now so you have that range of
[111]
to choose from but early on as you're building out your portfolio
[114]
you want to have that already chosen unless you want other people to choose
[117]
that for you now once you have that skill or
[120]
the service that you want to provide then the next thing is you want to
[123]
figure out like who do you want to talk to who do you want to serve who is your
[126]
target audience who is your target niche as a virtual assistant now there's a ton
[130]
of niches out there from real estate to digital marketing to being an assistant
[134]
to an influencer which again goes into a lot of a range of services or tasks that
[138]
you're able to do for them but when you're able to narrow down
[141]
early on who you want to work for it's going to be easier for you down the line
[145]
to find these jobs once you have that once you have the services
[148]
and the niche or the people you want to work for narrow down the next thing you
[151]
want to figure out is what is the brand that you're trying it to build as a
[154]
virtual assistant now your brand goes farther than just what you post
[158]
than just setting up your facebook your linkedin your instagram it's also what
[161]
you post keep in mind that everything that
[163]
you do to market yourself you can put part as your portfolio so
[166]
while you're building your brand while you're choosing what story you're
[170]
going with as you introduce yourself to further clients
[172]
you want to start capturing all of those so while you're building a brand
[176]
you're also at the same time creating the things that are going to go into
[179]
your portfolio basically at this stage you want to see what it would be like if
[182]
you were just working for yourself for the influencers that you
[185]
want to follow you know what are the types of quotes and images that you want
[188]
to create for yourself that you then want to develop later on
[191]
if you've chosen a skill let's save choosing video editing then you want to
[195]
try an experiment of like what are the things that if i was just paying myself
[199]
if i was able to pay for myself what are things that i would like to create
[202]
because then you're starting to build the things or the work samples that
[206]
would then go into your portfolio because then once you
[209]
have the again the services you want to offer who you want to talk
[212]
to you also have your branding a little bit started then you can
[215]
go into and then start really creating your work samples now creating a
[219]
portfolio isn't limited to someone who's creating a lot of creative content it
[222]
doesn't have to be just content based if you're someone who's now leaning into
[226]
becoming more of an admin your work samples are
[229]
you cleaning up a inbox for example or how you manage calendared invites or
[233]
events you take a screenshot of how it would look like if you were the
[236]
one sending someone a calendar invite like the agenda how you make sure that
[240]
they show up the follow-up so it can be
[242]
simple as that it's taking screenshots or taking documentation of
[246]
all of the things that you do and how you do them
[248]
so your client knows what it would be like to work with you
[252]
your work samples don't have to be something that you were paid to do it
[255]
could be something that you were doing free work for different people that's
[258]
one of the fastest ways that you can build a portfolio is asking
[261]
people for free work like do they need a logo to be created do they need for
[264]
someone to clean up their calendar or their inbox
[267]
do they need someone to do a little bit of bookkeeping for them the point of
[270]
asking for people for free work is for you to build that skill
[274]
whatever skill or service that you did choose
[276]
and also to build a little bit of your credibility because then as your
[279]
portfolio grows and more and more people know your work
[282]
love your work the higher chances that you're going to be recommended
[285]
to all of these other friends that they have relatives other people that they
[289]
know would benefit from your work and as a
[292]
bonus that's one of the ways they can also get a kind is by doing free work at
[296]
the start just doing one logo or one instagram post
[299]
and then if they love your work if it matches their brand and what they're
[301]
looking for you can end up being the person that
[304]
they want to work with now once you have that once you have
[306]
the work samples that you have try to think back again you know if you had
[310]
previous jobs before what could be work samples that you can grab from them
[313]
it could be screenshots if you're a social media manager for them it could
[317]
be screenshots of the post that you created where they can see the
[319]
engagements of those posts because then the next step is making sure that
[323]
they're all in one place it's choosing the platform for
[326]
your portfolio now this will depend on what skill or service you really narrow
[330]
down on for example if you really focus more on
[333]
images or videos and putting it all on google drive or youtube might be a good
[336]
place for you to start to put your portfolio
[339]
if you're someone who's more creating graphics on canva
[342]
then you can put all of it inside of canva because you can actually share
[345]
the link to your canva where potential employers can now
[349]
see those another way that you can store your portfolio if you chose to be a
[352]
writer is putting it up on linkedin on your profile so then your potential
[356]
employers can find those there if you chose more on the admin route or
[359]
you chose more on the stuff that you don't create content
[362]
for but you get results done so for example let's say you chose more
[366]
on like calendar management or inbox management or bookkeeping
[369]
putting all of those screenshots and saving them maybe into a
[372]
canva graphic might be the best for you the purpose of it is
[376]
you want to think what is the best way that i can show my potential employer
[380]
that this is something that i can do another fun creative way that you can
[383]
create this portfolio is by creating a standard operating procedure
[387]
of how you usually do things now this can be a little bit nerdy
[390]
but what i mean by creating a standard operating procedure is you're going step
[394]
by step of how you would tackle a specific task
[397]
so for example let's say in a previous job or in one of
[400]
the tests that you did you managed someone's inbox so what was
[404]
your process what were the labels that you put on each email to make sure that
[407]
it's clean you know how do you forward or how do
[409]
you answer emails when you receive them so creating that into an sop would
[414]
really help again the client visualize what it would
[417]
be like to work with you because they'll know how you think they'll know your
[420]
processes and they'll know how to train you so
[422]
showcasing that especially since not a lot of people do that creating an sop of
[426]
how they do things will put you more on the top the next
[429]
thing that you want to make sure that you do when you're creating your
[431]
portfolio is now to study or to level up your skill educate
[436]
yourself in all of the different ways that you can upgrade your skill you know
[439]
do it better research on the tool that you have
[441]
probably chosen to work with so for example let's say you went with a tool
[445]
called notion on organizing all the tasks
[447]
what are the different ways or shortcuts or how else can you do this
[450]
better that's basically the question you want to ask is how can i do this better
[454]
how can i upgrade how can be more efficient for the next client that
[457]
i get now once you've started upgrading your skills you want to make sure that
[460]
your portfolio is up to date so keep updating your
[464]
portfolio and always keep in mind that you want to put your best foot
[467]
forward with all of your portfolio now you can have an archive portfolio where
[471]
you can store your previous work or the work that is
[473]
not any more relevant to you but you want to make sure that what is
[477]
in front of the client what they see is something that helps them move
[482]
forward with you working with you or if it's just not a match be able to
[486]
reject you in a kind way because you've shown them that this is
[489]
what i can do if this doesn't match then that's okay
[492]
we could find other people to work with now once you have all of that once you
[495]
have your portfolio narrowed down once you have a platform that you can put
[498]
your portfolio the next thing is just market yourself that's the last step is
[502]
to make sure that other people will be able to see
[504]
your work that's why i recommend it if you're a writer you know put it up on
[508]
linkedin so other people can see your work
[510]
if you are someone who's a graphic artist make sure to post those on
[513]
instagram or facebook where people will actually have
[516]
seen your work you know you're bringing in the traffic if you're someone who's
[519]
more a calendar manager or you're someone
[522]
who's more doing the admin work maybe start posting on facebook of like
[525]
your hacks like what are the different ways
[527]
that you have been able to help other people keep track what are the task
[531]
management advice that you give what are the time management advice that you give
[534]
it's showing your expertise when you're marketing your own portfolio because as
[539]
you start building the trust and likability with other people
[542]
the faster it would be for you to get recommendations or to have other people
[545]
like hey i saw that you're a virtual assistant i
[547]
actually have this friend who's looking for one never discount the power of
[550]
being recommended to other people now if you're someone
